Gcc and others missing since Leopard installation

Not that I use these myself, but in Terminal (and X11) I can no longer find things like gcc, c++, make and other files that would be valuable to show to my students. I have vi and emacs as before, and also pico. It seems as if we have considerably fewer items listed (now 1241).
I am perfectly willing to run to the install disk and amend the installation if only I knew what to add. (I do have the Developer Tools installed.)
Some guidance, please? . . .

OK, that mist be the answer as I did an Archive and Install (earlier I had upgraded but after a couple of weeks some gremlins struck). I then dragged the Dev folder from the Old System Folder. That will be going on again (properly) later this evening.
On the other points, I have neither of those invisible files in the Home directory (or at Root come to that), although I did find a .bash_history file there. Nor are the files in that /usr/bin location.
I guess we had better resort to the reinstall of the Dev tools and I will get back to you later.

  • How do I get all Apps to appear in list to download in CC Desktop?  (Premier and others missing)

How do I get all Apps to appear in list to download in CC Desktop?  (Premier and others missing)
For instance, when I click download from the website for After Effects, it asks to use the CC desktop app and again, that AE is missing from the list.  Help.

Thank you.  I was unaware that I needed to run 64 Bit OS; only that I needed to run Windows 7.  I have access to another machine that runs Win 7, 64 bit.  Looks like I'll have to use it for video applications (Pr, AE, etc).

  • Lost applications due to "Erase and Install" option in Leopard Installation

I bought a new Macbook this morning at my local Apple Store, and they gave me a Macbook running Tiger as well as a Leopard Installation Disk. I wanted my Macbook to be just like new, so I called Apple Support and they told me to do an "Erase and Install." After I followed their directions and was finally running Leopard, I noticed that I lost programs: Garageband, iPhoto, and iMovie to name a few.
How can I get these applications back?
And it is absolutely ridiculous if I have to buy iLife '08 because I had these programs already on my computer with Mac OSX Tiger before Apple told me to "Erase and Install."
p.s. I received 2 other disks that seem to be of no help...2 Tiger Installation disks.

Ok if you purchased a new macbook reload the original os x tiger restore cd's you have to hold the c key at startup to boot from it format and reinstall mac os x tiger then once os x tiger is installed update to the latest version of tiger first then connect a external hard drive and use carbon copy cloner to backup your hard drive the reason for this is when you upgrade from tiger to leopard the os has a high tendency to remove the idvd and garageband content so none of your ilife apps will function after the upgrade this is why you need the external with it the first time you install mac os x leopard it will ask do you want to transfer your settings from another partition on this mac select this option and select the external and everything will be fine

  • HP 8750 Printer missing since Leopard upgrade on home wireless network

My HP 8750gp is connected (ethernet not USB) to my BT Voyager 2100 wireless router and worked fine under Tiger. Since the upgrade to Leopard, it does not appear as an available printer. Tried re-installing drivers from Leopard DVD, HP installation cd and HP website but still does not appear. I saw a related topic which suggested you need to be logged in with Admin privaleges to add a printer, however on my iMac I am the only account and so am always logged in as Admin. The printer has also dissapeared from my MacMini which has also been upgraded. Since re-installing drivers, HP Printer Setup loads at start up each time but cannot find the printer.
I am assuming this to be a Leopard issue (as that was the change), but could equally be a router or printer issue I guess.
    Any ideas?
    Regards,
    Andy

For whatever reason, my printer has just started working - one moment it was not listed, the next it was. I have no idea how this miracle happened, it just did.

  • Automatic start up since Leopard installation

Since installation of Leopard my MacBook has begun automatically starting up at 8:00 PM. My preferences has no check mark for start up at this time. Now that daylight saving time is over it has begun starting up at 7:00 PM. I don't like the idea of it starting up by itself when I do not have it set to do so. Anyone have any idea how to keep this from happening. Thanks

I to have been woken in the middle of the night by the +Phantom Mac Turnaona+. But I think I have solved the problem, find answer below.
History: once upon a time...a wakeup/fall asleep preference has been set and since removed
Consequence: a valid Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.AutoWake.plist file was created. Upon removing the wakup time from the preferences it was changed.
The file then had the Tag for a wakeup time that did not contain a time. The system upun shutdown interpreted this as 1am/everyday and wrote that information into PRAM.
    Disarming:
    1. deleted com.apple.AutoWake.plist - this left the information in PRAM
    2. PRAM-Reset on next startup (cmd-opt-P-R)

  • External drives no longer mounting on other Mac since Leopard Install

I have recently upgraded my old iMac to a Mac Mini with Leopard, however since using my Iomega 320GB External Hard Disk and also my 2GB Kingston USB Stick on my Mini they no longer mount on my old iMac, it's like Leopard has somehow created a volume on them ensuring they won't mount elsewhere anymore.
I still have lots of files on my old iMac that I need to transfer over to my Mini so this is a problem to me.
    Any ideas?

  • IPhoto freezes since Leopard installation

    Hey,
ever since I installed Leopard, iPhoto freezes when I open it...Anyone know whats going on? or how to fix it?
    Thanks

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
    Start with the troubleshooting basics:
    1. Repair Permissions using Disk Utility
    2. Delete the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. You'll need to reset your User options afterwards.
    3. Create a new account (systempreferences -> accounts) and see if the problem is repeated there. If it is, then a re-install of the app might be indicated. If it's not, then it's likely the app is okay and the problem is something in the main account.

  • Latest Software Upgrade since Leopard Installation

Since restarting after this morning's Leopard Upgrade I am being asked for my Administration Name and Password for Firewalling and Disk Utility (Disk Permissions). When entered they are not recognised so permission for use of these utils is not given... what's going on here!

even the most cursory search of this forum would have netted you the answer to your question which has already been asked and answered multiple times

  • Safari will not open home page and other glitches since upgrade

Strange stuff happening since I did the Combo Upgrade 10.4.11. Safari will not open to my home page. I have used preferences to set the home page but closing Safari and restarting still opens a blank page with no URL in the address box. I also noticed that several pages I have opened that have log in fields don't allow tabbing to the next field. I have checked all the preferences and every thing seems right. I have trashed Safari and its preference folder, downloaded the upgrade and used Pacifist to reinstall Safari. I used Disk Utility to repair permissions. Still I can't can't get a home page to load. Before the reinstall, I synched with .Mac to save my bookmarks and synched again afterwards to bring them into the fresh install of Safari. What should I do now?

Here is a culmination of my searching and efforts that fixed this issue for me. I find it necessary to run Disk Utility more frequently.
    1) Trash Safari preferences in all user accounts:
    Computer/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist
    User/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist
    2) Empty trash
    3) Move files from Input manager to desktop
    /Users/YourUsername/Library/InputManagers/
    /Library/InputManagers/
    4) Restart computer
    5) Close Safari if automatically opens on restart
    6) Open disk utility: Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility
    7) Verify permissions
    8) Repair permissions
    9) Reopen Safari
    10) Return Input Manager files from Step 3, ONE FILE AT A TIME from Desktop to Input Manager Folder and Restart between moves.

  • Finder freeze and other problems since external hookup

I own a macbook pro and recently bought a 1tb Iomega external to back up. I loaded ran time machine successfully and loaded it with movies and since it hasn't worked correctly. It will not allow itself to be removed because it says I need to quit programs that may be using it (and only Finder is running). It will remove itself periodically.
Also, since I have owned it, Finder will freeze at least one time per use and never come out of it. I have to manually shut down the computer to have it become operational again (that is without the external plugged in). other programs work fine (I am currently using Safari while Finder is only a spinning wheel).
whenever I run disk utility on the external, it removes itself.
I know it may sound like it doesn't work at all, but i can successfully read and write on the external, when it is not frozen.
I tried to call Apple Support but likely enough, my phone support expired last month.
    any ideas?

    Hi bsugradsbm-
Greetings and welcome to the Apple Discussion boards
Did you reformat the drive using Disk Utility before you used it?
If not, try doing so and format it for MacOSX Extended. Otherwise, it sounds as if the drive is faulty and you should probably return it under warranty for one that works.
    Luck-

Sure, but why pay for that when you can do it yourself.
without upgrading hte memory cna we make this ystem to run faster ?

  • IPhoto 08 crashing on startup since Leopard installation.  Help!!

I had iPhoto 08 working with OS 10.4.11 just fine. Installed Leopard tonight -- ran all software updates. All looks good except iPhoto crashes on startup every time. It looks fine but the second I click anywhere one it (menu, event photo, bar to drag, etc.) it beachballs and crashes. I repaired permissions and when that did not work, I reinstalled iPhoto 08 and went through the software updates. That didn't work either.
    Any ideas? Thanks!!

Might be a preferences issue. I would suggest you create a new, test, account on your system that mimics your own account (as far as permissions/rights are concerned). Try using iPhoto in that account -- do you see the same problem?
If not, then it might be that the preferences that were carried over from Tiger in your old account, or the file/directory permissions that were carried over, are giving iPhoto problems. At least, it will give us another piece of data with which to troubleshoot.
Also, you may want to look in your ~/Library/Logs/ folder for crash reports or other logs that may tell us what is actually causing the application to crash. If nothing is there, check your system.log (you can get to this via the Console application, for example) for clues.

  • Recent Finder and other missing File chaos!

Hi everyone! I've just resolved a problem I had where Finder refused to see my Macintosh HD Icon, either in the sidebar, or on the desktop. I've noticed that many other people are having difficulties, presumably after the latest Security Update. After 9 hours of booting from the install disk, repairing everything etc, etc, etc I finally discovered that the Macintosh HD File had turned into an "invisible" file, the ones you don't normally see in Finder, like most System/Root files. I just happened to use a utility named Cocktail to view all invisible files and hey-ho, up it popped. Then I used Invisiblix to drag the file onto and make it visible again, so that I could hide the others once more.
I am wondering if this is what people are experiencing, but with random files on Tiger, after downloading the Security Update! It may be worth digging about in this manner, and I didn't need to go into Terminal/UNIX to do it. Hope this post is of some help

Thanks for the link BD! I hadn't heard of that little piece of mischief before lol! I've generally found Tiger has run along beautifully since I've had it, and I've hardly ever visited Apple support. Most of my confusion has been with third-party software conflicts. Today it had me baffled, but when I stumbled on the issue I spent 10mins laughing insanely to myself lol :-D
    Right, time to Back-Up lol

  • Dictation, start up and other issues since Yosemite

How can they put out these updates had have them so messed up? My computer worked fine with Maverick but now...
    1. My computer has a "loading bar" every time I log in and it takes about 60 seconds for that thing to finish. I'm not sure if I had this in the past but that it loaded so fast I never saw it or if this a new feature. Why is my computer loading so slowly.
    2. An this is the disaster. I am a student and speaker and I loved the dictation feature in office. (I don't think this is an office issue but I might be wrong.) The dictation worked great. I could bang out a speech or paper in no time with some proofing. However since the update, every time I stop speaking, even when I do not insert a period, it capitalized the next word. The proofing I need to do not is ridiculous and I can't find any way to change the dictation settings.
    3. I thought my router was on the fritz, but now it looks like it's the update. My browser also is taking forever to load.
    ARRRRRRRGGGGGGG!
NO. 2 is my major concern. Can anybody tell me how to fix my dictation issues? Can I turn "off" this new capitalization setting?

Could be - because of the disk image, you actually have two mountable disks with OS X systems on them. Having two Mac OSs is not a good idea, and since one of them is not a valid Mac OS for the Intel-based MBP, this is a problem. Your occasional flash of the wrong disk suggests that this is your problem.
You might try opening the disk image from the G4 and deleting the System folder from it - you don't need it, and that is a likely source of the problems...
    Ps. 7+ minutes - wow!

  • Visio Cisco Equipment Shapes out of Proportion and others Missing

    Hello Everyone,
Have any of you noticed that the shapes of line cards and port cards are out of proportion with the chassis Visio shape in which you place them.  The ones below leave gaps not representative of the actual physical equipment.  Also, it seems not all the shapes are included with the VSS files.
    WS-X45-Sup6-E Supervisor Engine 6-E
    WS-X4548-GB-RJ45
    WS-X4648-RJ45V+E
    WS-X4306-GB
The attached image provides and excellent example of the issue with the current Cisco Visio Shapes.
    Thanks,
    C. Z.

    Hi CZ,
You are correct that some of the line cards on that stencil do not fit properly into the chassis.  Those icons/shapes were produced by the previous vendor prior to 2009 when we took this over. The shapes produced by my group do fit correctly, for example the WS-X4748-RJ45-E. The product group did not authorize us to go back to retrofit the older shapes and that's why they do not fit as expected.
Regarding missing shapes, we produce what the product group orders from us but I can often ask them to fund additional shapes when there is a forum request. Please understand that they will not accept requests for end of life products.
