GCU: What is considered a "new video game" to qualify for 20% off?

nt

Hey Itaintrite,
A new video game is any title that's still factory-sealed and has never been purchased before. It does not matter whether the game was released last week or last year, just as long as it is not pre-owned. Please also keep in mind that the Gamers' Club Unlocked 20% discount on new video game software does not apply do digitally-delivered games (i.e. downloads). Additional details can be found in this FAQ:

  • Whats is considered a ''new video game software'' with the Gamers Club Unlocked Membership?

I mean, is a preordered item, a week after release or a month after?.
Also if this apply with Wii U games.

    Hey soccerzz5,
It looks like jac522 and Shady520 have everything pretty well covered here, but to provide an official answer: "new video game software" refers to any factory-sealed, disc-based game. It does not matter when the game was released or how long Best Buy has carried the title, just as long as the other two conditions are met (factory sealed, physical disc). • What is best type of 'new' video camera to buy for editing with PE 10?

I currently own two Sony miniDV camcorders (models DCR-HC28 and HC40) and was doing fine in Premiere Elements and recently upgraded to version 10. I was in the process of using the HC40 cam as a 'pass-through' device to digitize some old VHS tapes, and it worked well for copying from VHS to miniDV tape. Then, I could capture in Premiere Elements and edit, etc. (It would never work to pass all the way through to capture in PE in one step using Firewire).  Now, the HC40 camera has locked up on me halfway through my box of VHS tapes, and is stuck showing the Time/Date screen and the touch screen seems to be disabled.  What to do?
There do exist plenty of used DCR-HC40 and 52s (which also support pass-through) on Amazon for sale in the $200 range, and that is one option.  I also went to Best Buys this week and looked at all the new Sony video cameras, and they fell into basically two series:  the DCR-SX series, which record in standard definition onto flash memory (SD cards), and the more expensive HDR-CX series, which record in Hi Definition (also on SD cards) but also, I was told, can record in standard definition.  The miniDV camcorders are no more, apparently.  I am not so enamored of HD recording that I would go whole hog for it, as I am happy with the results I have been getting with my miniDV cameras once burned to DVD or converted to MPEG or MP4 for playing on my iPhone, etc. Plus, HD takes up so much more memory and space on the hard drive compared to standard def files.
I called Sony tech services today to find out that none of the new cameras support the pass-through function for digitizing from old VHS cassettes, so I am looking at buying a VHS-digitizing device as recommended here on the forum such as the ADS Pyro AV Link or Grass Valley ADVC110.  Since I would rather spend that money on a new video camera instead of merely the AV link device which I will have no use for once the tapes are digitized, my question comes back to the cameras. Which of the new cameras will be most ideal for editing in PE10 going forward, or is it best to stick with miniDV for now?
Steve G has always seemed to point out that miniDV tape and the ensuing AVI files are the best for PE to work with.  Sony told me today that even the SD cameras such as the DCR-SX65SD ($219) now record onto the SD cards in MPEG2 format, and that AVI is a thing of the past that died with the miniDV tapes.  I assume MPEG2 still comes out as different clips that one assembles on the Timeline in PE10?  One probably could convert the MPEG2 files to AVI, but would that give the same quality as an original AVI file from a miniDV tape? And if MPEG2 is the new standard going forward, do the resulting videos made with PE10 have the same quality as those made from 'native' AVI files?  I will buy a used DCR-HC40 miniDV camera if the end result is better than those to be obtained with the brand new DCR or HDR series cameras now available in stores.  But if the quality is the same, I could perhaps opt for one such as the HDR-CX 130HD ($349) which also records in SD in case some years from now I decide I really DO want to switch to HD formats.
Any advice on choice/use of the newer cameras and their default formats such as MPEG2 is welcome, in relation to PE10 editing and output capabilities.
    Thanks very much,   paultool3

    Dear JM and Steve,
Thanks much for your replies.  I plan to get my DCR-HC40 miniDV camera fixed so I can use it for pass-through digitizing from VHS tapes.  I also recently bought one of the Dazzle Video Creator Platinum capture units ($84 at Best Buys) just to try it, and actually got pretty good results in digitizing a VHS-C tape using a VHS-C to VHS adapter unit to play it in our VCR, and then using the Pinnacle Studio HD (version 15) that came with the Dazzle unit to import and digitize through the Dazzle unit.
The Dazzle unit would not show up in Premiere Elements 10 as an option to capture from, but did in Pinnacle Studio 15.   I used our Sony VAIO with i7 processor and Pinnacle captured the one hour, twenty-five minute- long VHS-C tape to a single 18GB .AVI  clip which I then was able to bring into Premiere Elements 10 and use for output in various formats.
When using a less powerful laptop initially, the digitizing failed, with 319 dropped frames in the first 5 minutes.. So it takes a more powerful computer to work with a capture unit like Dazzle, apparently.
I will eventually be shopping around for a new,  AVCHD format video camera as well based on your recommendations, but the current group of Sonys in this category, such as the HDR-CX130HD ($349) which record video onto SD cards, are getting bad reviews from CNET, claiming they have poor quality HD and other issues.  So for the forseeable future I will be sticking with miniDV using my Sony DCR-HC28 and HC40 camcorders.

  • Who Has The Best Platform For Buying and Selling Used and New Video Games?

    plz suggest..........

I'm not sure if I understand the questiion or not. But gamest$p seems to hold the market on new and used games.
Because of the high cost of gaming and the economy, I never buy new games anymore.
I buy from pawnshops and kraigslist.

  • HT1531 My new dvd game is asking for a POWERPC processor, but I don't have it, cause mine is Intel. What should I do?

    Processor

If your Mac is capable of running Snow Leopard (10.6.8), then install it on an external drive, or separate partition of the internal drive. Then you can boot to SL to run that game and any other PPC apps.
If your Mac came with Lion, then you're pretty much stuck. Your options are to look for newer version of the game that is Intel native, purchase an older Mac that can run it if the company has no Mac Intel version, or install Windows 7 on a Boot Camp partition to run it as a Windows app.

  • What is the 24fps Audio/Video Sequence Presets setting for?

I don't understand what happens when I change the Audio/Video Settings > Sequence Presents to DV NTSC 48kHz -24. I would think this would make my sequences 24fps. But when I import anything into a sequence (I'm mostly importing still images) they still show 30fps. What happens when I change this setting to 24?
I want to export my sequences at 24fps Targa to output to film and don't want any frame blending -- I just want a one-to-one frame correspondence.
Am I doing something wrong? Is this the way to go?

Actually never mind, it seems to be displaying at 24fps now. Not sure what was happening before.

  • What's the best new replacement hard drive available for a PB 1.67GHz?

After my Leopard upgrade and some new iMovie projects I'm finally reaching the last 10 GBs of my stock 100GB drive. So I'm looking for a replacement drive. I'd really like to find a 7200 RPM drive with 16MB cache and a fast access speed. But from what I'm seeing those are only available in SARA drives.
What's the fastest and largest ATA/100 drive you've seen? Obviously I've check out the usual online retailers, but the selection has been pretty sparse.

The drive replacement went fairly smoothly. I ran into problems while removing the ribbon cable for the trackpad and keyboard from the main board. There is a very small fragile plastic clips that holds the ribbon in place. Unfortunately it broke while removing the ribbon. You could tell it just fractured like as if it was an old piece of plastic that had been sitting in the sun for years. It took about a dozen attempts to replace it and secure it in place before I was able to button everything up. Fortunately it's directly under a RAM chip, so I was able to wedge a nylon washed between the two and the pressure from the RAM is keeping it in place. The rest of the drive replacement was a breeze.
Then came the restore. Unlike what I've read, I wasn't able to do a restore by just booting off the 10.5 DVD. I had to first install 10.5 (basic install), restart and then was prompted with a restore option at boot-up.
It looks like it restored everything from my last backup. However, in launching a few common applications I use I have had to re-enter serials numbers. Which is weird because the same preferences were copied from the backup.
But the good news is I now have 75GB free and the drive is quieter then the stock one.

  • A question about video game and drivers for Nvidia

I have recently bought the parallels program and installed Win 7 on my Mac. So far so good. Then I installed a game called Champions Online (PC based). The problem is that when I load the game, it crashes with an error message saying basically that my drivers are not working properly (that's the interpretation from the support team at Champions). They suggested that I delete and reload my drivers for the Nvidia card. How do I do that? If that doesn't work, does anyone have any suggestions as to the solution to my problem?

Parallels and other virtual environments are not meant for games and 3D intensive applications. Run Windows through Boot Camp if you want to play games.

  • What is supported in new Photos app on Mac for face detection?

In old iPhotos, there is a feature to show suggestions for faces, is there any equivalent available in Photos?

As Alley_Cat mentioned the only sort by date is in the Moments section.  If you're looking in the All Photos sections it's only by Date Added:
In the Photos mode or an album it's by Date (EXIF capture date):
In the "folder" titled iPhoto Events, which is a collection of albums representing the events from the iPhoto Library, it's by Title also.

when I try to make a new video, a window comes up that says,"The operation could not be completed," and then under it, it says,"No other information is available about the problem," what is happening and how do I fix it?

    Hi
And without info - it's near to impossibly to help. Try my general troubleshooting note:
    Troubleshooting note
When iMovie doesn't work as intended this can be due to a lot of reasons
iMovie Pref files got corrupted - trash it/they and iMovie makes new and error free one's
problem in iMovie Cache folder - trash Cache.mov and Cache.plist
Creating a new User-Account and log into this
This forces iMovie to create all pref. and cache files new and error free
Event or Project got corrupted - try to make a copy and repair
a Codec is used that doesn't work (even though iMovie and/or iDVD tries to / they fail in the end)
version miss match of QuickTime Player / iMovie / iDVD
preferences are wrong - Repair Preferences
other hard disk problem - Repair Hard Disk (Disk Util tool - but start Mac from ext HD or DVD)
External hard disks - MUST BE - Mac OS Extended (hfs) formatted to work with Video
( UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange - works for most other things - but not for Video )
USB-flash-memories - usually do not work
Net-work connected hard disks - usually do not work (most often not fast enough and WRONGLY FORMATTES as DOS etc)
iPhoto Library got problems - let iPhoto select another one or repair it. Re-build this first then try to re-start iMovie. When iMovie starts-up it first look trough this iPhoto library and if faulty it all Halt’s.
    This You do by
    First -  close iPhoto
    Secondly - on start up of iPhoto - Keep {cmd and alt-keys down}
Thirdly - now select all five options presented
THEN - WAIT a long long time (>20 hours are not strange)
free space on Start-Up (Mac OS) hard disk to low (<1Gb) - I never go under 25Gb free space for SD-Video (4-5 times more for HD)
external devices interferes - turn off Mac - disconnect all of them and - Start up again and re-try
GarageBand fix - start GB - play a few notes - Close it again and now try iMovie
Screen must be set to million-colors
    Third-party plug-ins doesn't work OK
Run "Cache Out X", clear out all caches and restarts the Mac
Let Your Mac be turned on during one night. At about midnight there is a set of maintenance programs that runs and tidying up. This might help
Turn off Your Mac - and disconnect Mains - for about 20-30 minutes - at least this resets the FireWire port.
In QuickTime - DivX, 3ivx codec, Flip4Mac, Perian etc - might be problematic - temporarily move them out and re-try
(I deleted the file "3ivxVideoCodec.component" located in Mac HD/Library/Quicktime and this resolved my issue.)
    buenrodri wrote
I solved the problem by removing the file: 3ivxVideoCodec.component. after that, up-dated iMovie runs ok.
Last resort: Trash all of iMovie and re-install it
