GDM is starting twice
Folks,
I have configured GDM using the Wiki instructions. When I reboot, GDM login screen appears fine, but after a few seconds GDM tries to start again:
There already appears to be an X server running on display :0. Should another display number by tried? (...)
How do I avoid this?
Thanks!

was it a configuration mistake or does i have to do with this gdm shutdown problem http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/8125 ?
If yes, how did you solved it?

Hello everyone,
I know this is gonna sound a lil bit n00bish but then i'm a n00b.The problem is that "acpid" is starting twice while boot-up even though its enterd only once in /etc/rc.conf,i donno whats woring,is it whether the sequence in which ive put up the daemons or is it that some other program is starting it.Here's my daemon section of rc.conf file:-
# DAEMONS
# Daemons to start at boot-up (in this order)
# - prefix a daemon with a ! to disable it
# - prefix a daemon with a @ to start it up in the background
DAEMONS=(syslog-ng !hotplug !pcmcia network netfs crond dbus hal acpid gdm alsa)
Can anyone tell me whats going wrong?
Thanks in advance,
Rajiv Nairit just a guess, but: maybe a daemon u start "depends" on acpid and starts it with it (like portmap is started when u start fam).
just try putting acpid behind syslon-ng on 2nd place and see what u get
good luck,
cheers,

Photoshop CS6 Cloud 13.1.1 32-bit & 64-bit keeps asking to licence software at start twice. Once when i start it and again once I sign in? I recently refreshed the host file in windows to see if helped but not.
Regards
James HowarthHi James,
This is a known issue with Photoshop CS6 specifically and will be addressed with a future update soon.
The temporary solutions are to either uninstall Photoshop CS6 and not install the 13.1.1 update or continue signing in every few launches until an update is released.
We have this document about the issue here:
Trial screen displays when you open Photoshop CS6

Don't allow a report to start twice
Hi,
I want to start a report by a job every 10 minutes.
But if the last job has not finished
a: I don't want to start the next job or
b: the new report shout stop his work without doing anything.
Is it possible to check if the rport is started twice?
Thanks, StefanHI stephan,
Create a ztable and update this with a flag , since the ABAP memory or SAP memory
will stay till the session is active, and during every run you can check this flag from database in
PBO/AT SELECTION-SCREEN OUTPUT Else exit/STOP etc
You can also MODIFY this DB table to have only 1 record always to avoid unnecessary Memory Usage.
First time just check the flag and Clear this Flag from DB at the end of successful run again set it back with something like X
if you feel ABAP/SAP memory would work for you then you can go with that option aswell.
Hope this would serve your purpose.
You can use TBTCO for this purpose.
" You can use the Field CHECKSTAT which says Job status check indicator for subsequent job start
Cheerz

SLiM only starts twice then exits to tty1
Hi... i've installed arch yesterday following this guide https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Beginners'_Guide i
After that i started to set up a new desktop using openbox and slim.
Basically everything works fine... except that after exiting openbox 2 times slim won't start and i end at tty1.

When i run "systemctl start slim" on tty1 slim starts again and after exiting openbox twice i'm back on tty1.
...But when i run "slim" on tty1 slim starts and i can exit openbox as often as i want.
Any ideas ?
Edit:
Running /usr/bin/slim from tty1 gives me this logfile.
/var/log/slim.log
slim: waiting for X server to begin accepting connections.
slim: waiting for X server to shut down
slim: waiting for X server to begin accepting connections.
slim: waiting for X server to shut down
slim: waiting for X server to begin accepting connections.
Somehow the second "slim: waiting for X server to shut down" does not happen when running "systemctl start slim"
Last edited by Synth (2013-03-19 19:39:10)Ok, I was able to workaround parts of the bug:
I changed slim.conf and and set daemon = true (so slim runs as a daemon). Furthermore changed the slim.service file for systemd:
[Service]
Type = forking
PIDFile = /var/lock/slim.lock
ExecStart=/usr/bin/slim
Now I can log in and out as often as I want. Seems to work. However, nm-applet only shows up in odd numbers of logins:
1st login --> nm-applet is shown
2nd login --> nm-applet is not shown (but running --> htop)
3rd login --> nm-applet is shown
4th login --> nm-applet is not shown (but running --> htop)
...and so on...
I search the web, it seems to be a problem with dbus and the order how the services get started. Don't know if that is true...any ideas from anyone? -
I just upgraded to GNOME 3.8 through the gnome-unstable repo, but GDM doesn't seem to be starting. The main problems seem to be that it's "unable to create drawable", that the gnome-settings-daemon is unavailable, and there are some font-config issues.
Here is the log:

This has been happening to a lot of people lately (since the upgrade to gnome 3.8 from 3.6). Many people haven't been able to find a solution, so they have installed the SLiM login manager and another desktop environment like xfce, enlightenment, or fluxbox for the time being.

I still haven't been able to fix it on my computer, so I'm using SLiM and xfce while I wait for an upstream update.
I'm currently using SLiM and Cinnamon since GDM won't work, but I was asking because I wanted my laptop to lock when I suspended it, which SLiM didn't do as far as I knew. Well, I guess I'll wait for an update. Thanks.

GDM not starting and TTY1 not able to log in after GNOME 3.6 update?
Hey everyone,
I've been using arch for a couple of months now and all's been fine. I updated last week to gnome3.6 however and a lot of my system broke. I couldn't start any window managers or desktop environments at all. After reading about the initscripts deprecation I migrated completely to systemd and uninstalled initscripts, as per the wiki. This let me boot up, change to tty2 and start gnome with startx.
Now my only problem is that GDM will not start on boot. The normal arch booting screen doesn't appear anymore and instead has been replaced by the following error:
/dev/sda5: clean, 227778/2689904 files, 6575481/10749432 blocks
(The numbers vary and sda5 is my root partition)
I've tried different things like reinstalling the legacy ATI driver I'm using and running aticonfig again, messing with my .xinitrc file and making it executable for everyone.
I'm lost, any help?
Thanks.

GDM not starting correctly after upgrade
I just got around to upgrading my machine to the new /usr based Gnome and XFCE. Now, when GDM starts I get the error shown in this screenshot -- http://img136.imageshack.us/my.php?imag … estpn0.png. I've removed GDM and reinstalled it to no avail. Any suggestions as to how to fix this problem? I would like to have my themed GDM back.
Make sure your themes are moved over to /usr/share/gdm/themes.
mv /opt/gnome/share/gdm/themes/* /usr/share/gdm/themes/*
I think this was the main thing but I also forced a reinstall of gdm and then restarted. The restarting was accidental (telinit 0 ) but that might have also played some role.
Good luck. -
Hello all, I'm having a problem that just started recently with GDM. When my computer boots, X and GDM start up fine. Then I log in, and Gnome starts, but it crashes my whole machine.
The top and bottom bars for gnome show up, but thats all. Then I cant click on anything, I cant switch back to the terminal (alt+f1) or ssh in from another machine.
If I boot to a console, and use startx to start gnome-session, it starts fine.
I have an ATI X700 card, using the open source 'radeon' driver. I'm using the Beyond kernel. I installed from the 0.8 alpha3 CD. I have an AMD64 processor, but am running the x86 version of Arch.
I did not see any errors in /var/log/Xorg.0.log The warnings I saw were:
(WW) Open ACPI failed (/var/run/acpid.socket) (No such file or directory)
(WW) RADEON: No matching Device section for instance (BusID PCI:1:0:1) found
Also a bunch of:
(WW) AIGLX: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x23
I'm kinda stumped on this one, anyone have any ideas?
Thanks!Ok, my xorg.conf

Thread.start() twice = different Thread instances
Some tests seem to indicate that calling start() on the same thread instance twice won't work (no action...) even after waiting for the first run to end. This points to the need of creating a new thread instance before calling start() again. Can someone confirm the impossibility of creating two threads (even if not concurrent ones) from the same Thread instance ?
Thanks.
Nunoonce u stop the thread there's no way it can be started again..the basic funda of threads..

This is wicked frustrating. All I'm creating is a simple automator action. It consists of 2 items - the "Run Shell Script" and a Growl Notification. In the shell script there is a single line to call a perl script.
I saved this as a folder action, and every time I drop something into it everything runs twice. I see the growl notification twice as well as in a log file that is written by the perl script.
The really frustrating part is that it was working 100% correctly, I removed an unnecessary "Get Specified Finder Items" step in the very beginning, and now it is doing this running twice thing. It still does it after I Time Machine restored back to the copy that was originally working. I have also right clicked the first action and told it to ignore input.
I've tried deleting everything, deleting and disabling the folder action so I would be starting clean from scratch. I recreated the script and it's still running twice. A different folder action works fine.
Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Message was edited by: mcewen98At one point there were 2 copies, one called {name}.app and another just {name}. I'm not sure how that happened, but I fixed it before posting. There are 2 scripts in Library/Workflows/Applications/Folder Actions now, but they are named differently and are for 2 different things. The other one works fine.
I think I may be on to something. If I remove the "run shell script" action, leaving only the growl action, save, and test, then the message is only displayed once. When I add the "run shell script" action (regardless of what the shell script actually runs - right now I'm only telling it to echo "test") I get the message twice.
Also, whenver I test within Automator it works correctly. The problem only happens when I exit out and then drop something into the folder using the finder. I also checked the folder action configuration. There are 2 folders listed, the one having the problem has a single script. If I edit the script the path to the .app is correct. This is the file that I'm editing in Automator.

I regret agreeing to download Firefox 3.6.10 update, as it is somehow corrupted, and will not load when I restart. Subsequently, every time I start Firefox, it warns "Update Ready to Install", then when I don't restart (if I restart, it won't load) it exits, and I have to start Firefox a second time. Then it works without the warning, but when I exit and start Firefox again, the warning returns and the cycle repeats. This is such a nuisance I have gone back (reluctantly) to Explorer. Is there anyway for me to get rid of this corrupted update and go back to before I downloaded the fateful update?

After my last system update, anytime i start gnome i get a message that basically says "panel is already running ..." How do i sort this out. Its nothing major just kinda annoying.
Thanks.I found a workaround for the problem.
Install xfce4-panel and xfce4-xfapplet-plugin and you will be able to run the gnome applets in the excellent and lightweight xfce4-panel.
It works fine for me -
Since updating to itunes 8.02 whenever a song starts to plays it then starts a second time interferes with the original start and then the second start cuts out about 5 seconds later it even does it with new songs I add.
It is most annoying as it does it with every single track, yet if I click it back to the start of the track it plays fine. Does anyone know what is happening I have set crossover back to 3 seconds. I just wondered if itunes 8 has a new setting that is interfering with the start of every track. You might have repeat turned on. To turn it of open up your music app and tap the two looping arrows on the left under your song progress meter until they turn white. If that dosent help you might just have to delete your playlist and then rebuild it.

Looking for a way to start twice an application
I have a standalone application running on a Windows/XP platform.
I'd like to prohibit a user to start this application if it is already running.
Any suggestion will be be welcome (If possible, to be not OS dependent ).
GegeSome applications try to avoid this by opening a server socket of a specific port, some hold a file lock ... Either solution has its drawbacks.

Clean Install: from Recovery Disk vs. from USB Flash Drive
Planning to do a clean install on my MBP running Yosemite. Have come across two ways of doing this: From the Recovery Disk or from a USB Flash Drive. If the clean install can be done by using the Recovery Disk, why would you do one using a USB drive?
