GDM sets brightness to 0

When starting GDM, my screen fades to black. I have auto-login enabled, so I can just hit the brightness key on my laptop and bring the brightness back up. If I disable auto-login, I'm not able to see the screen, but I also can't use the brightness keys.
Any idea how to fix this? How does GDM determine initial screen brightness?

I have got similar problem, so I will not start a new topic .
When I start notebook, my brightness is set to maximum. When I logout, birghtness set to maximum too. So basically everytime when I get in to the login screen (GDM) brightness is set to maximum.
Any idea how to overwrite this behaviour?
Thanks

    Hello everyone!
I have really annoying problem with my laptop - setting brightness just don't work. I have tested many others distributions and this work only under Ubuntu 9.10 beta. I think that is connected with this. How can I use this patch  in arch?
    Laptop: Sony VAIO VGN-FW11E
    Graphic card: ATI Radeon HD3470
I'm sorry for my english but people in polish forum just can't help me ;p

@B I'm not able to make so specific changes like you said. I can build something from AUR, sometimes also make some changes to PKBUILD's but doing something with dsdt is to hard for me.
    @litemotiv
Do you think I shoud compile new kernel with new sony-laptop module inside?
hmm, i'm not certain that will fix it for you..
do you already have a fixed dsdt for your laptop? if you do, the best way is to compile a kernel with these lines added to the kernel config file:
    CONFIG_STANDALONE=n
    CONFIG_ACPI_CUSTOM_DSDT=y
    CONFIG_ACPI_CUSTOM_DSDT_FILE="DSDT.hex"
that will definitely fix the brightness issue. the sony-laptop module is built by default, so you don't have to compile that specifically (the module is needed to get the function-keys on your keyboard working, it shouldn't have any influence on the brightness itself).
if you don't have a custom dsdt yet, you need to make one following the instructions on the vaiobuntu blog. it's a bit daunting at first, but i assure you that it's doable.

Can you share your kernel version and graphics controller information, please? I had a similar issue with my graphics controller after upgrading to the 3.x kernel in core.

  • How to set brightness and contrast of video please

Hi, how can I set brightness and contrast of video in OSMF please?
I tried add filters to MediaContainer and VideoSurface of VideoElement, but doesn't work.

I think I find the reason, OSMF uses StageVideo other than Video when StageVideo is available. StageVideo doesn't support filters or mask.
So the answer would be no way unless I switch back to Video.

  • Setting brightness level up (automatically) at GDM (or other DM) level

I would like to set up (maybe write a script?) that will set my monitor's brightness to 100% immediately after GDM (my display manager) will start...
I know there are ways to automatically set up full brightness in GNOME itself, but these are usually taking effect AFTER you log in and so they are not affecting GDM - I would like to set it up for GDM so, BEFORE I log in, but WHEN I AM AT THE LOGIN SCREEN...
Is it possible to do that? (I assume it is:-)
What would be the ideal (read simplest) method of doing so?
Thank you for any suggestions and ideas, that you may have,
    Matej,
P.S. If you know about any other DM's that can do that, please let me know as well...

    Here are instructions https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/GNOME#Login_screen
Once in dconf-editor go to /org/gnome/settings-daemon/plugins/power and set your options.

So do I, I have the same laptop and saw the same issue. It is a bug on the kernel. The problem will be fixed in kernel 2.6.31, it is caused by this bug:
    http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=13121
If you can rebuild a kernel with the patch http://bugzilla.kernel.org/attachment.cgi?id=22001 , it should fix the problem (it did for me), or - for the time being - stay with 2.6.29 until 2.6.31 comes out.

  • Script to set brightness depending on battery

    Hello guys,
I'd like to set the brightness on my machine depending on the usage of battery.
If the battery is available it should be set to 100%, if not then to the minimum to save battery life.
I thought about something like that but as I currently have no battery available I can't test it.
    In /etc/rc.local
    if acpi -a | grep off-line 2> /dev/null; then
    xbacklight -set 0
    else
    xbacklight -set 100
    fi
    What do you think?

I know laptop-mode can do this but as I simply want just this feature it's too bloated for my usage.

  • Setting Brightness/Contrast in iTunes

I have searched high and low and can not find the information on google or here on the forums. Is there a way to adjust the video settings in iTunes? All the m4v movies I play in iTunes are to bright, blacks are very grey. When I play them in Windows Media Player they are perfect, blacks are black. I know I can adjust my video settings using my graphics card drivers, specifically nvidia, but as it sits I have it set to allow the individual programs to do the video adjusting. If I do change my settings system wide in the nvidia control panel it then makes other videos to dark. Maybe I'm crazy but I'm will be shocked if there is no way to adjust video settings in iTunes considering it is a used for renting and purchasing movies.

So my question is - what did I miss setting up in iTunes that I now need to do? A silly thing to do I know appreciate any advice.
    Welcome to Apple Discussions
For iTunes preferences, start iTunes, go to the iTunes Menu in your menu bar and select "preferences"; or a faster way, command key + , (true for most applications).
Once in the preference menu you can customize the various settings for iTunes if the default settings are lacking. Some of the more important preferences are found in the Advance panel for burning, importing and general.
    Good Luck with your Mac.
BTW, there are excellent books for Mac computing and Tiger. One of my favorites is David Pogues "Tiger - the unwritten manual". Also, would be beneficial to understand the various maintenance requirements of the Mac. Dr. Smoke, a member of the forums, has an excellent primer here.

  • A tip on setting brightness

I was going to complain about F1 and F2 on my external keyboards not working on my two MB Pros but ended up finding the solution I might just as well share:
If you use an external screen as the main screen (move the menu bar to the external), F1 and F2 on the external keyboard will no longer set the brightness of the MB screen. Just the keys on the MB:s own keyboard will do that.
If you keep the menu bars on the MB screen, the function keys on both keyboards will work.

    Sent this morning:
    G'Day Carlo...
Just thought I'd draw your attention to a post in the Adobe Photoshop forum where a regular user has made a discovery about a little problem with how Pixentral creates its thumbnails. Apparently, super-wide panoramas don't scale down properly when the thumbnail is created. The user has found a way address the problem.
    http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.59b7d30c
Perhaps you might like to pop into the thread and offer a little commentary? We use the Pixentral service quite a bit on the Adobe forums, and it'd be nice to see your reply there.
Also, I've noticed that the thumbnails generated by very small images also sometimes create excessively large thumbnails, but I haven't seen it often enough to figure out a pattern of behavior.
Your thoughts would be most appreciated.
    Best regards,
    Phos....

    Hi [Phos....],
Thanks for the note... Thanks for pointing out the issue; I wasn't aware of the problem. I've been extremely busy with my job and haven't had a whole lot of time to dedicate to Pixentral. But I will try to take a look at the code tonight to resolve the problem.
    Hope all is well!

  • How to measure/set monitor brightness with specific reference

My prints come out dark; printing advice suggests the i-Mac monitor is quite bright and to set brightness at 120cd; however, the i-Mac brightness function only offers a 1-10 scale with no reference.  What is the equivalent of 120 on in i-Mac, or is there another function that allows me to specifically identify a 120cd setting?

What is the color profile of the image files that print dark?  If they are Adobe RGB that could be the reason as that profile does muddy up prints to ink jet printers.  Otherwise try calibration the monitor thru the color portion of that preference pane.
You might look at the printer settings as I have had more success in managing color thru them than adjusting the brightness of the monitor. What printer do you have?  What app are you printing from?

  • NB100 - How set the screen brightness?

    Hi all.
Just bought an NB100 - overall very very pleased with it. Well built, good screen and very compact etc.
Got a couple of questions? The screen brightness is controlled by Fn+F9/F10. I like to have it set to "halfway" or less - partly to preserve battery - but also because I find max brightness is actually TOO bright for me! But on reboot the machine seems to always start at maximum again. Is there any way round this? Does it perhaps need a firmware update (my machine seems to be running version 1.90 which I believe is the latest)?
I noticed other threads mentioning Fn + F8 as a means of selecting Bluetooth/Wlan etc? Mine seems to just control the fan setting and processor speed - The "grey" fan setting gives 1.6ghz and the fan comes on - whereas Fn+F8 toggles a "white" fan icon - where the processor throttles down to 800/900 ish and the fan slows/stops(?). [in passing I've noticed some videos become "jerky" if the lower setting is chosen]
I'm not 100% sure what Fn+ "pipe" key does (to the left of F1)? The Fn+F1 switches on wireless/wifi I know - but the "pipe" key seems to be a Wlan symbol (or is that the key to use for Bluetooth or GPS or whatever)? Sorry to sound so ignorant - but the user guide doesnt go into that much detail. I'm fairly sure the machine I bought - which was a Toshiba Refurbished/Reconditioned NB100 - model PLL10E - hasnt got any BT/GPS etc - just the basic wifi which F1 switches on and off.
Final comment - and others have said this - the key tops are very difficult to see in low light!! The "grey" colour was definitely a design mistake! But I can live with it - either a usb light? or some stickon (white) letters?
    Regards to all.

hi, i think the best way to set brightness is in options of energy properties accessible in system tray icon. I know about bt and wlan activation, it seem that bt and wlan dispositives are on the same circuit on/off, so not indipendents. Nb100 is a good inexspansive machine :)

  • LightScript - Lightweight script to easily change screen brightness.

    Wiki: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/LightScript
    AUR: https://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=62997
    Official site: http://haikarainen.dotgeek.org/lightscript/
    My first package, be gentle
Created this script because of 3 reasons:
    1. KDE's controller for backlight is really buggy for me, makes it unusable.
    2. xbacklight does not work well with multiple controllers for the same device (I get 7 stages of resolution instead of 4882).
    3. I like scripting/doing my own work.
    What it does?
LightScript automatically detects the best backlight-controller based off its precision/resolution, and uses that controller to set the backlight to a value you specify in percent.
Example: "light 30" <- Set brightness to 30%
If sudo is installed, it will attempt to use this instead of forcing root (so you wont have to type "sudo light x" instead of just "light x").
It also has a default minimum-cap of 5%, since some controllers turn the display pitchblack on 0%. This behaviour can be overridden by changing /etc/lightscript/minlight
    Updates:
Since version 0.3.6 the script now also takes + and - operators, so you can increase and decrease brightness instead of just giving a fixed value.
It also checks for filepermissions on controllers before deciding wether to force root/use sudo etc.
Example: "light 10+" <- Increase brightness by 10%
0.3.6 also came with 2 small issues that is on my todolist; Firstly, typing "light +" or "light -" will give expr errors, nothing dangerous though. Secondly, the output on dynamic changes(with operators) might shift with 1-2% when mixed with regular changes. This is only what you see though, internally everything works fine, it will still write the correct values to the controllers.
Since version 0.3.5 the script has undergone huge internal changes (basically rewrote big parts of the script to make it more consistant and futuresafe, removed dependencies, gave a prettier output as well as more information etc)
Find any bugs? Have any feedback? Dont hesitate to reply
PS. I am aware that this might not be preferrable to most people (if xbacklight/other software they use works well), I just want to share my work with the community (especially since it is my first real bash script, also I get to practice AUR-packaging for upcoming c++-made-software!)

The script has been successfully ported to an ANSI C89-program!
Its commandline options is really different from lightscripts,  but internally it works the same way. I've also added functionality per requests I've gotten, I'll let the programs output speak for itself:
    fredrik@fredrik-arch ~/projects/light % ./light [20:07:53]
    Usage: light [-qcas] <value>
    -q: Run quiet, supresses output.
-c: Prints the current brightness in percent and exits.(Not precise)
-p: Prints the current brightness directly from controller and exits. (Precise)
-m: Prints the max brightness directly from controller and exits. (To be used side-by-side with -p)
-a: Add the value instead of setting it.
-s: Subtract the value instead of setting it.
    <value> Brightness wanted in percent.
I'll package this under a different name tomorrow(since it's now a completely different product), stay tuned!
