GDM/X Issue

AMD Athlon 64 3000+ (2 GHz)
768 MB RAM
nVidia GeForce 7600 GT (256 MB VRAM)
Arch 64 + NV Driver
I'm having a pretty major problem with my video card.  Since I upgraded to it, almost every distro I've tried has had a problem.  Ubuntu seems to handle this the best, but still doesn't detect what the card is specifically (beyond being an nVidia).
When I start GDM/Xorg, they seem to fire up.  Problem is, I can't see anything!  The screen is nothing but a distorted white.  This is when using the NV driver.  When I use nVidia, I can see everything; but the resolution is HUGE!  It's even lower then 800x600.  There are no options to change the resolution.
In both cases, I added "Modes "1028x768"" under the screen sub sections.  NV is the same, and nVidia does what NV is currently doing.
I would post xorg.conf, but I don't know how.  I don't have a GUI.  It's just the standard .conf generated with the modes section added.  Any help would be appreciated.

have you installed the nvidia driver?
Here is the wiki entry on that part:
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/How … DIA_driver
What driver are you currently running?
Are you seeing an nvidia splash screen? A mouse cursor?
I had weird issues with the nv driver on my 7800gt, but the proprietary driver works like a charm.

  • Slow GDM - different issues than other posts

    Hi all,
GDM is slow to start (compare to what it use to be) the issue is I can't pin point why, as I have made a lot of updates lately including moving to Grub2 and changing quite a few .pacnew today (I know I should do it right away...)
I seems however to be an issue with the nvidia driver (see below xorg.0.log for more information)
FYI I run dual screen with twinview
    Many thanks for your assistance,
    Regards,

  • [SOLVED] GDM/Gnome Issues after Updates

    hi everyone!
ive run into some pesky problems (possibly nvidia related) after a full update this morning. after booting up, gdm tries to run, but it crashes and retries over and over again with this message (shown in systemctl status gdm while running):
Failed to contact accountsservice. Error calling StartServiceByName for org.freedesktop.Accounts: GDBus.Error: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.TimedOut: Activation of org.freedesktop.Accounts timed out
i tried installing lxdm and lightdm (the former loaded, the latter didnt), but that also didnt seem to work. with lxdm i couldnt log in to gnome (screen just went black), with lightdm i had no luck at all (didnt start at all).
can anyone point me in the right direction to debug this?
    thanks a lot!
    regards,
    M.
    Edit:
i installed nouveau and lightdm again and checked the status with systemctl. seems polkit is looking for a file called libmozjs-17-0.so:
    ● polkit.service - Authorization Manager
    Loaded: loaded (/usr/lib/systemd/system/polkit.service; static)
Active: failed (Result: exit-code) since Wed 2014-04-16 17:14:12 CEST; 39s ago

Apr 16 17:14:12 arch systemd[1]: Failed to start Authorization Manager.
Apr 16 17:14:12 arch systemd[1]: Unit polkit.service entered failed state.
    i checked /usr/lib and found libmozjs-24.so… weird
    Edit 2:
so i reinstalled a package called js17, undid all my changes with lightdm, slim et al, reinstalled nvidia and it seems it works!

Last update (at 2014-04-16) gives me a great headache.
All my keyboard shorcuts had become useless: freezings reach up to 30 secs.
Number of applications are bricked, i.e. evolution can not to read any message from imap server.
I have a bulk of errors in my journalctl.  This is cut of them (Hmm, what do you think about a necessity to punish the guy that invented localized logs?)

  • Sudo logging me out... weird GDM+Gnome issue

This only happens once on each boot:
1.) I'll log into gnome from GDM
    2.) I'll 'sudo' a command
3.) complete logout to console, then GDM comes back up.
When I log back in, everything will work fine and I never see this problem again.
If anyone needs to see logs (I didn't know which to post) lemme know!

  • Gnome crash after installing amd catalyst

Installed arch on my Acer Iconia tab w500 with Gnome as the DE.
Performance using the open-source driver was bad, so i tried the amd driver, following these steps:
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/AM … repository
Used Vi0L0's repository and followed the steps from " Configuring the driver ". However, when i restart, Gnome says  'On no! Something has gone wrong' and invites me to log out.. logging in back again presents me to the same screen.
    Info that might be usefull:

Well, not quite. Yes, gdm had issues with catalyst since 3.12. That can be worked arround by using a different Login Manager - e.g. kdm, lightdm and whatnot. Or Downgrading gdm and libgdm to 3.10. The symptoms are a black screen at start, since gdm crashes. You can still start a gnome-session via startx.
This issue is seperate. Here, gnome session crashes, even when started via startx. I've got the same issue, but no solution yet.

  • [Xorg] some issues with i915 and gdm

    Hi all
I'm having some issues starting the X server. I don't know how it happened, my netbook was on standby. After I turned it on, there were loud beep sounds coming out of my computer and the screen was completely black so I shut it down. After I turned it back on I got following issue:
gdm-binary[4585]: WARNING: GdmDisplay: display lastet 0,135094 seconds

I don't think there is a problem with the x.org configuration so I hope you backed it up. This line indicates the problem:

Make sure you haven't disabled KMS (like using i915.modeset=0 in /boot/grub/menu.lst).

  • GDM and Gnome graphical issues with Nvidia card

    Hi !
I want to install archlinux with cinnamon as desktop environment on the computer of a friend, but I have some issue with it, and especially with (I think) the graphic card, it's a Nvidia GeForce FX 5200LE.
I tried installing nvidia-173xx from the aur first. I installed gdm, but it's extremly slow, as a result that I can't log in (nevertheless the mouse is fluid..)  the cpu is not so much used yet, and it's the same thing in the cinnamon session or the gnome session (I tried installing lightdm to log in which works fine). Moreover, in the session I've got some strange graphical things, such as some missing white pixels, or a blue window when I launch nautilus, ... (here are some screenshots : http://i49.tinypic.com/2efhm6s.png and a with a window : http://i46.tinypic.com/116m05k.png)
I tried to install the nouveau driver instead, and now gdm don't freeze, I can log in, but there is always these strange graphical issues.
Is the graphic card too old for gnome ? Or did I forget something ?
Thank you in advance for your help !! And sorry for my english ..
Here are some log with the nouveau driver :

I'm no expert on reading the xsession errors, but I had all sorts of problems running gnome3 with my machine of the same vintage.   Cinamon is based on gnome3.  I switched to Mate which is a re-packaging of the old gnome2 along with Compiz for the window manager and all works well.
I strongly suspect that they are using the newer OpenGL 4 API.  The Nvidia FX5200 is stuck at OpenGL 2.1.

  • Weird gnome-shell/gdm issue

This is the first time using arch, though I have been using Ubuntu for a while. I have it installed in 64-bit virtualbox inside an ubuntu host.
I just installed gdm and gnome-shell, but a weird issue happens when drawing some text. This happens on the login screen on the usernames and in the applications menu on the application names. It draws a weird blur behind them, but it is different for each. It looks like this:
This actually might not be related, but this is the bigger issue. When I open an application, a small box is drawn along with it. It is always in the same place, and seems to draw part of the window. Specifically, it draws the lower left corner of whatever I try to interact with, whether it is by clicking or typing. Anything that I do isn't shown on the actual window until I press the escape button or drag the window to refresh it. For typing, it doesn't ever seem to work. It looks like this:
    http://i.imgur.com/ui38KWE.png
Thanks for any help. This is just a virtualbox install, so its not that important, but I would like to try out arch linux.
UPDATE: The blur issue might have to do with shadows, as shown here, kinda:
This doesn't happen with my ubuntu install, though.

Another update: I tried restarting it with gnome-shell --replace which didn't help, but I then accidentally hit ctrl-c. This closed gnome-shell, leaving the windows open, and got rid of the weird box. I don't know if this will help at all. There were also some warnings in the terminal output of gnome-shell, but I couldn't scroll or select them. One last thing: After logging in to gnome-shell, the background is just black, but after restarting it with "alt-f2, r", it gets back the default blue background. The other issues are unaffected.

  • Gnome/GDM Issue - System freeze before starting Gnome every reboot.

Hi guys, sorry for my bad english.
    I've a strange problem with Gnome/GDM DE.
Yesterday, I have installed gnome on my laptop but it works 1 times every 2.
The first time i power on my laptop it works, the second (or if i try to reboot) it freezes before starting GDM.
I can't switch tty, can't shutdown. I can only power off pressing power button.
How can i solve this problem? Anyone had this issue before?
PS: (I've installed arch yet on the same laptop using XFCE without problems)

  • [SOLVED] gdm issue when logging out

    Hello
I'm having some problem with gdm, at least i believe it's gdm, everything starts up fine I'm able to login and use my gnome desktop perfectly until I get tired and want to logout, shutdown or just restart my graphical environment with ctrl + alt + backspace. When I try to do this I get a black screen and after a short while my computer reboots.
Any ideas what's causing this, or how I can solve it?
    Thanks

Solved the issue by my own, noticed from other applications that they had trouble saving their settings i my home folder.
Then I noticed that I wasn't owner of my home folder after setting myself as owner it worked like a charm.

  • Automount Issue on Gnome 2.28: GDM Mounts USBs after 2nd Insert

Good evening everyone (at least, it's evening here at my part of the Universe),
I have been using Arch for the past month (and Ubuntu/Debian for two years) but am totally stumped on this odd behavior.
When I first installed Gnome, I got that 'Permission denied' dialog box everytime I tried to mount a USB, but quickly realized that it was because of the wrong exec line at the start of my .xinitrc. When I changed it to
    exec ck-launch-session gnome-session
I thought everything would be fine. However, for a USB to automount, I have to insert the USB TWICE. I don't know why. The first time, it's detected by 'lsusb', but not by Nautilus (it doesn't even show up in the Computer directory).

Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
In this case, it's the Power Quotient International USB that isn't being read. When i remove the USB and put it back, it automounts.
I have checked previous threads and most of them discuss the 'Permission denied' issue, which is not the same as this one :( I have also checked the 'I Won the Struggle Between HAL and PolicyKit' - I don't think I have the same problem.
    I have installed gnome-volume-manager.
I have tried this issue on another user account, but it's still the same - takes 2 inserts of the USB to make it mount.
I am a member of the storage and power groups.
If there are any other logs that I should show, I would be happy to show them, but am unsure if I should post PolicyKit files (I'm not sure which one is in charge of drive automounting, I'm sorry) or if I should post my HAL configuration file, but so far I have checked my HAL config file and it is configured as was written in the HAL wiki.
If someone could please point me in the right direction of what file(s) to look at (is this perhaps a HAL issue? or Xorg? or PolicyKit?) I would be happy to look into it again and post the appropriate files.
    Thank you very much! :)

    @Allan:
Good point. That was a bit far fetched to say; I'll admit that. I should've looked at a roadmap or something. Maybe I was just unclear as to how much work distro developers were putting into customizing their rendition of gnome. Was unaware that installing a vanilla version of gnome would be unstable, wonder how the devs of gnome feel when working on a vanilla code base. .. oh well.
    @smakked:
Maybe something's like window positioning is a little obsessive compulsive of me but that functionality was available in 2.26 and below; that's maybe why it seems unfinished or something. I'm not a n00b in any sort, I respect and understand opensource and such. I know that my post above sounds rather complain-oriented, but in all honesty, It's very MS like that newer software doesn't work as well (and sometimes worse) than previous versions. I just love gnome and can't use it because of some simple features that were taken away/ are not working.
    @Both of you:
Creating a tab in nautilus then dragging the tab, segfaults nautilus. GDM segfaults if trying to log into gnome-session when the user is not part of 'wheel' ... just stuff like that. I've pulled the gnome packages on 3 different boxes (and 3 different CURRENT mirrors)... same issues. I know how to manage groups and permissons and basic packages to make arch work.
So, I'm very sorry to sound annoying or anything of that nature. I was mainly curious if anyone else is having issue / knew a way to fix them. I know most arch users love *box window managers and the like, but SOME of you have to have gnome and notice things like that. lol. Anyways, It's clear that I might get talked down to on here or might get accused of being pedantic when things don't work. Thanks anyways guys.

  • GDM Issues

    Hello,
I've been playing around with an install of Arch under VirtualBox for a few days and I'm having an issue regarding GDM. Basically, when I attempt to login to Xfce it loops back to GDM. This shouldn't be happening. The session is set to go to Xfce, but it isn't for some reason.
Does anyone know what's going on?

Tealer wrote:I tried the daemons method and it also did the same.
This is annoying, I'll just remove GDM for now until this can be fixed.
You can use Slim instead. See the Wiki Doc.

  • Unable to start gdm xfce

The power went out mid update and when I rebooted I am getting errors of missing libs and gdm/xfce4 fails to start. I have also tried pacman S-yu again plugged into ethernet, but said libs showed an error after that. I did find another post with similar issue but the OP went back to Ubuntu to resolve it. Without looking through the reams of code - why don't you just start up in runlevel-3 and do a pacman -Syu from there?
Then reboot to runlevel-3 again and invoke X with 'startx'.
If all that works - you can go back to using gdm (hopefully).

  • Multiple issues with trying to standalone Compiz(driving me nuts)

All right. This is going to be one long post.
I'm trying to achieve a standalone Compiz session as inspiring by the thread "HOWTO standalone Compiz" and I want to achieve automatic login through either a login manager (gdm kdm slim) or the inittab tweak. I would prefer the login manager method.
Issue 1: if I try the method on the wiki, gdm looks for an Xclient script, which is completely vague. I've created .Xclient, and set it to exec start-fusion.sh, but that just crashes X.
I've tried creating a fusion.desktop file in /usr/share/xsessions to point to start-fusion.sh, but that crashes it as well.
I've tried the inittab method and tried to point it to startx, but that just crashed X again.
SLiM doesn't work. It just crashes. Neither does KDM.
Issue 2: The fonts in GDM are just so tiny. When I try to login from GDM through .Xclient, the fonts in the session are tiny as well. I've tried all the methods on the Xorg wiki, but none of them worked. I'm connecting my T61p to an external monitor.
Issue 3: I used to be able to let compiz set which desktop to open a certain application through "Put Window". Now I can't. In all cases I've had 6 desktops, 3 across 2 high. The windows don't listen anymore. I've tried using the class and the name of the application both, but none do it.
Would it actually be better to just do a fresh/squeak clean install of everything? It know it's not required, but would it help?
    here's my xorg.conf for a reference:

  • Having strange issues with kbmap and utc/localtime

    Hello,
I've been using Archlinux for a month or so, never had any problems until now.
    1. Setting the keymap doesn't stick. At first I had the German keymap selected in System-Preferences-Keyboard, and at reboot it would switch back to the standard US layout. Yesterday I deleted the current layout and again added German as the default.. And at bootup today I had a russian layout .
    2. I haven't been able to get the UTC function properly working.. The hwclock was set in UTC (date -u showed the correct time), UTC was set in the rc.conf, but the Gnome clock always showed the wrong time. (Now localtime is set in rc.conf)
2a. Related to that, I installed openntpd and added it as a startup daemon.. System-Administration-Time and Date still gives me an error message "NTP support is not installed" when I set the configuration to "Keep synchronized with internet servers".
    Here's my rc.conf
    # /etc/rc.conf - Main Configuration for Arch Linux

thanks in advance for any help!

I don’t know that problem, but have you tried if turning off OpenGL and restarting has a bearing on the issue?
    Boilerplate-text:
Other than that are Photoshop and OS fully updated and have you performed the usual trouble-shooting routines (trashing prefs by keeping command-alt-shift pressed while starting Photoshop, 3rd party plug-ins deactivation, system maintenance, font validation, etc.)?
