GE40 2OC with 1 SSD. Where to put second hd?

Hello, My laptop comes with only one hard disk SSD of 128gigabyte. I would like to insert an additional hard disk.
I am not sure where I can insert it, should I remove the dvd and buy an adaptor/caddy?
What kind of hard disk should I buy?
Is it possible to buy another ssd in addition to the original one instead of removing the dvd?
Thanks in advance

Try to just pull it from laptop. It should just come out. Other laptops have 1 screw which keeps it inside but here I see none. So either it has no screw and you need just to pull it gently or you have to unscrew whole bottom cover because one of screws holds it. My bet there is no screw at all.

  • My computer screen keeps going blank and then going back to the box where I put my password in to start my comp. Why is this happening?

    My computer (Macbook) was working fine this am. I left it for an hour and then came back and the screen was black (always does that as the screensaver hardly ever works). I moved the mouse to wake it up and everything was normal. I went to adjust the volume and the screen went blank and the main page with the box where I put my password in when I first start my comp appeared. I put my password in and everything was normal again. I opened a window in Safari and before it loaded completely the same thing happened, the screen went blank and went back to the password box. Does anyone know why this is happening? I don't have an external hard drive or any blank flash drives so I can't back anything up right now and am afraid I'm going to lose everything. Thank you

    I am trying to organize a zip file with a bunch of links and files. But when I drag an image file to a folder, it always "Snaps to grid" instead of just landing where I put it. All of the files are going into the same zip file but I want them visually in the space that I put them and not at the bottom of the snap to grid folder location they are looking like.  I am trying to  drag and drop files in groups so that I can group them for now, but image files always do their own "sort by" when I drag them from my web pages. Links don't do it though.  I tried resetting the folder, and deleting the DS files. No luck.

  • Where to put .txt file with SimpleInput

    Hello everyone,
    I'm rather new to Java and have a slight problem. The thing is that I need to write an app that can read a text file in this format:
    2
    Orc
    name = Gnorck
    experience = 20
    maxHealthPoints = 50
    healthPoints = 30
    maxBerserk = 9
    berserk = 7
    Human
    name = Aragorn
    experience = 45
    maxHealthPoints = 40
    healthPoints = 30
    maxGreed = 20
    greed = 10
    The first number is de number of characters in the file and after that every character is described in 7 lines.
    Now the application has to be able to read the file. I've choosen to first just make a list of characters. A friend helped me with this code but I'm not completely sure if I know how it works. The code:
    package RPGApplicatie;
    import java.util.*;
    public class Karakters {
         //Constructor
         public Karakters(int size){
              karakters = new ArrayList(size);
         //Methode voor het toevoegen van een karakter
         public void voegToe(Karakter k){
              karakters.add(k);
         public static Karakters readFile(String filename) throws ClassNotFoundException, RuntimeException, InstantiationException, IllegalAccessException{
              SimpleInput file = new SimpleInput(filename);
              int size = file.nextInt();
              Karakters result = new Karakters(size);
              for(int i = 0; i < size ; i++) {
                   Class c = Class.forName(file.nextLine());
                   result.voegToe((Karakter)c.newInstance());
              return result;
         //Variabelen aanmaken
         private ArrayList<Karakter> karakters;
    }First question: I have the classes Karakter (which is the superclass for class Human and Orc), Human and Orc. So does the method forName scan for strings that are also classes? Like so it scans the file and when it comes across a line that says either 'Orc' or 'Human' it adds it to the list?
    Second question: Where to put the text file that holds the data? I now have it in the same folder called test.txt. I use this code to run it:
    package RPGApplicatie;
    public class RPGApplicatie {
         public static void main(String[] args) throws ClassNotFoundException, RuntimeException, InstantiationException, IllegalAccessException {
              Karakters.readFile("test.txt");
    }Thanks in advance! If more info is needed I can post that.
    Regards,
    Sander

    I assume you have defined your Human and Orc classes to include fields name, experience, etc and a constructor that takes these values as parameters?
    You can remove the Class.forName() method altogether. Example:
    int count = file.readInt();
    // define variables for Karakter values (name, experience etc.)
    for (int i = 0; i < count; i++)
      String characterClass = file.readLine();
      // read common character components
      if (characterClass.equals("Human")
        // read human specific components
        karakters.add(new Human(...));
      if (characterClass.equals("Orc")
        // create Orc
    //...Cheers

  • GE40 2OC (Dragon Eyes) parts

    Hi,
    My GE40 2OC (Dragon Eyes) keyboard malfunctioned about a month ago and I am having trouble getting a replacement.
    Also I would like to buy a hdd bay to replace my cdrom on the odd bay.
    Where can I get these parts? I am from the Philippines btw.

    I'm sure you can find the HDD caddy online.
    The size of the HDD caddy: 5.04 in x 5.00 in x 0.47 in (12.8 cm x 12.7 cm x 1.2 cm)

  • D2D2T where to put the middle D (on the XSan).

    Hi all, for all of those implementing D2D2T what is the datastore used for the middle D.
    Assuming the first D is data sitting on your XSan.
    Assuming the final T is some kind of tape (library) device.
    Where do you build your temporary backup/archive?
    We were first thinking (see other posts )of making a virtual tape library on a part of our XSan but we now get some advice to put it on a direct attached raid (attached to the backup server that is).
    Anyone want to share their thoughts and experiences.
    Peter

    I do have a nice harddrive but my projects are huge. What is the backupfile and why is the size not big? It doesn't include the project just where everything is in the project?
    I am using one of the fastest firewire 800 drives on the market with a brand new macbook pro with an ssd in it. It's not a thunderbolt drive but I get no lag. And I usually don't even convert my Canon 5D Mark iii footage to prores. I do however have to convert my go pro 3+ black footage or it lags.
    I understood the old final cut. I'm just having a harder time with the changes.
    When I backup my project, which I backup to another external drive, what do I do to do that? Just drag it? Used to, I did not drag it.
    Before this update on final cut pro x, the old way, it would let me right click on the project and save it with it's included events to the other harddrive to back it up.
    How does one go about that now? Or is it safe to just drag it?

  • What SSDs can I put in my MacBook?

    I have a February 08 black macbook 13.3" and definitely want to upgrade the hard drive.
    The question is, which one would be best to put in it?  Cost isn't important.  I just need it to be fast, and have 100+gb.
    Also, when I replace it, do I need to worry about the BIOS or anything?  I can just plop in a Snow Leopard Installation disc, right?

    Visit OWC where you will find plenty of Mac compatible SSDs. All that's required is to replace the HDD with the SSD. There are no BIOS configurations required. You will want to use TRIM Enabler 2.0 to enable TRIM support for non-Apple SSDs.

    Shopping for another "Mac Pro Late 2013" or I might settle for my "Mac Mini 2012 i7 16 Gig 256 SSD Intel 4000" refurb with warranty bought from Apple that I already have on hand.
    Thank You
    I don't know how this ended upon two threads.
    I'm pretty sure I'm going to go with my 2012 Mac Mini i7 16 gig 256 SSD and Lacie Little Big Thunderbolt 1 512 SSD
    That will be pretty punchy for me.
    I'll only have about $1,000 in the computer itself with a three year Apple Care Warranty.
    It should sell for $500 a year from now if I choose too.
    I think it's going to work great.
    I'm going to load it up with all of the software just like I was going to do on the Mac Pro.
    It's good for three computers in the future so no money lost on the software
    I'll probably just keep the Mini indefinitely for a backup even after I upgrade to the newer 2015 Mac Pro later next year.
    Thanks

  • Replacing 2011 17" i7 MBP 128gb SSD with 13" MBA with 256gb SSD?

    Hi Guys,
    Looking for your input.
    I'm now using the 2011 17" MBP i7 with 128gb SSD as my only machine.
    I'm using it mainly for my Adobe CS5, Streaming HD content to my PS3,
    Parrarel, Torrent, Surfing and iphoto/itunes. With occasional steam games.
    I've just put the order for 13" MBA, with i7 and 256gb SSD.
    Will be fast enough to replace my MBP and do the tasks above?
    Will it be much slower? I don't do video renders.
    The reason I'm getting the air is that I'm travelling regularly.
    Also I will hook it up to the new 27" thunderbolt Display.
    Thanks for your input.

    CS5 is a pretty intensive application, and so is Parallels. I still think you'll be okay with CS5, but Parallels runs sort of slowly on my 11 inch Air. So, I installed my Windows in Bootcamp where it runs a lot smoother, and is a better overall experience. I'm not saying you can't used parallels with the Air, it probably just won't run quite as smoothly as it does on your 17. However, it will be able to handle the remaining tasks you listed with ease, I really do think you'll like it a lot more than your 17 inch pro. The new Airs are just so likeable- there's nothing I can find wrong with mine. I have a 15 inch Pro (2011, Thunderbolt, 2.2 GHZ) and ever since I got my Air last week I've used the Air 80% of the time and my Pro 20% of the time. It's just more enjoyable to use, and even though I'd never let go of my Pro because of how powerful it is, I know I'm going to continue to use my Air more.

  • Systematic keyboard settings reset on the laptop GE40 2OC 036

    Good day to all!
    I have bought laptop GE40 2OC (Dragon Eyes) in January 2014. I managed to get a configuration with Super RAID (128 +128 Stripe) and HDD WD750 GB. Notebook is very productive, as I wanted.
    The problem is: in Win8, which stood on the laptop as default OS, keyboard configuration (settings) namely the "delay before repeat" didn’t save. I used to work with a minimum of delay, and it in a while (indefinitely, different each time) returned to the standard default value. The most amazing thing in the keyboard settings (Control Panel -> Keyboard) slider has always remained in the position where I left it (far right).
    I first thought that Kaspersky, which was pre-installed, was the reason, then thought about keyboard driver, it can be a long list ...
    A few days ago I realized the reason - the keyboard settings are reset to default, if you press any combination of fn + F(x), or fn + cursor (change of volume/brightness). I.e.you wanted a brighter screen - pressed fn + UP, and settings returned (delay before repeating) back to the default value.
    I decided to see how different keyboards will behave in the BIOS. The result surprised me.
    1) The native keyboard - if you just hold the DOWN arrow, then in half a second cursor starts to "run". Speed is really slow, namely repeat rate (not delay).
    2 ) Logitech K230 - delay before repeat rate is the same as in the case 1, but the repeat rate is faster - about in one and a half times.
    3) The native keyboard after pressing any combination fn + func. key  - The speed of the delay before repeat is the same as in the case of 1 and 2, but the speed of the repeat ... just mad (!) . I.e. actually in two times faster keyboard sends repeats.
    So it is NOT SOFTWARE problem. It is something wrong in HARDWARE.
    Question - Does anyone faced with the same trouble? If so - how to treat it? I do not want to go to service center, because not sure that they will be able to fix something.
    P.S. to avoid unnecessary questions about my diagnostics:
    1) first I deleted the keyboard driver from the device manager – it did not help, settings were abandoned at some points (I did not yet know the reason) still "lost".
    2) Removing Antivirus (it had input filter module to protect password fields at websites) did not help .
    3) Then I thought about Logitech mouse and keyboard (Unifying) - but they all work fine! I.e. delay of wireless keyboard K230 is always the same, but the native notebook keyboard returned to default over time. By the way – is it a feature, that native notebook keyboard does not wake laptop from sleep ? WHY?
    4) In a moment of deep frustration I decided, and updated to Windows 8.1 (but I did not want to, thinking that it will help – and it did not).
    5) Yesterday I updated the BIOS from version E1492IMS.30H to version E1492IMS.30N - really hoping for success, but other than nonworking Wi-Fi I have not received any "advantages ". About Wi-Fi it is another story..
    6) Finally, I thought that new firmware can fix something, and in addition updated firmware from 5.06 to 5.07. That solved only the problem with Wi-Fi, by the way, not keyboard EC reset was done.
    7) the reason for the problem I found accidentally, because I had a suggestion that turning off the camera (fn + F6) was somehow connected with keyboard. It should be noted that the on/off of the webcam also does not save its settings (white balance, saturation, etc. return to default). But this I do not care much.
    Please help, because I believe that I am not the only one who have this trouble and certainly in other MSI laptop models such bugs can be too.

    Nope, that's fine.
    The MSI rep I forwarded this to said that he has forwarded on-ward as he did not have a GE40 for testing at the time.
    He did also agree and seem to think there is a problem with the EC that would cause this issue.
    I expect he may post here once a fix has been found.
    Thanks!
    I'll wait. I think it is clear that the problem goes away when I restart laptop, and also after changing and accepting settings in Control Panel -> Keyboard. But next fn + func. key will again cause default settings

  • Fresh install for Windows 8.1 Pro on GE40 2OC?

    Hi there,
    I had just purchased the GE40 2OC notebook.  At the same time, I had also purchased the Windows 8.1 Pro upgrade separately.  I would like to have a clean install on my system.
    My concern would be how to set up the 2 x 64GB SSD HDD under Super RAID, on top of the 750GB HDD.
    Will it be automatic under the Windows 8.1 install?  Or are there specific steps to do so?
    Thanks,
    Chester

    The raid array is already set up, you will just see it as a single destination drive and possibly need to load raid drivers during install.

  • Have 17 in MB Pro 8GB, I7 processor. My 500 GB HDD is running out of space, want to replace it with a SSD 1 TB, Can I do it, and what drive should I use?

    Computer is prob. 5 yrs old, still runs great, works well with Yosemite, just HDD if full, tried cleaning it up, but only get about 8 GB left. Want to change out for a SSD 1 TB or 960 , leaning toward Crucial drive, can I do this and replace my old drive. Do not really want to give up my DVD slot to a HDD, would rather just replace the current Hard drive with a SSD? Any thoughts, can I do this myself. I have computer connected to time capsule and could use that to reinstall onto new SSD??

    Yes. Any 2.5" notebook sized SSD can be used. If your Time Capsule has a full system backup, then you can restore from it. You could put your old HDD into an external enclosure and boot from it. Then clone the HDD to the newly install SSD after formatting it.

  • Dual Boot Selection with two SSD Installed

    I have two SAMSUNG SSD's installed in the W540.
    SSD #1  -- Microsoft Windows 7 Professional
    SSD #2 -- Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate
    The SSD's had a complete install of each Microsoft Windows operating system without using the dual boot manager. I select  teh SSD to boot from by using teh F12 key at boot time.
    On my previous computer (HP EliteBook Workstation  8560w), the BIOS had a option to display a boot selection menu for me to select from without having to manually select the option to display. The boot selection menu gave me 20-30 seconds to select a alternative boot option. If I did not respond it woudl boot to the primary drive.
    Can the Lenovo W540 be setup the same way? I can find no options in the latest BIOS.

    I am honestly dubious that your previous HP machine had anything in the BIOS to provide this "Boot Manager" functionality you've described.  Your description is exactly what Boot Manager in Windows does, which probably what was in effect on your HP machine.
    Now you say you installed two separate versions of Windows on two separate drives, and without involving Windows Boot Manager. That suggests to me that you unplugged the other SSD when you did each install, so that the Windows installer didn't even know about the other bootable OS when doing its current install.  If it had seen the other pre-existing bootable Windows, then the second install would have triggered the creation of a 2-OS boot menu (identical to what you say you saw on your old HP machine).  You could still have two bootable Windows, on two separate drives (or, you could also have installed to two separate partitions on one drive if you wanted to), and at boot time Boot Manager would present the menu to you and you'd select one or the other. The most recent Windows to get installed would probably have made itself the "default", so that after 10-30 seconds it would auto-boot to that Windows if you didn't arrow up/down and press ENTER to select the other Windows for this particular boot.
    The BIOS of the machine has a "boot sequence" setup, and one of your two SSD drives MUST be first, in front of the other. So at boot time by default (in the absence of F12 to select a boot device) the BIOS would normally go to THAT "first" drive in the boot sequence list, locate the "active" partition on that drive (where Boot Manager is assumed to live), and start the boot process.  If Boot Manager sees a 1-OS boot menu, it just goes to that partition (as C, where Windows lives on that drive) and starts Windows.  If a 2-OS boot menu exists, Boot Manager presents it to you and you decide which Windows you want to boot to.
    When you push F12 at boot time, you simply say to the BIOS "let me pick which of my drives I want you to go to, to then find the "active" partition on that drive to kick off the boot process".  Since you did two completely independent Windows installs, I would say that you probably have a "system reserved" partition (which is marked "active") on each SSD, along with a C system partition (for Windows) on each SSD.  So you can actually boot to either drive, via F12, or you can just let the machine boot to whichever one you know to be first in the boot sequence list.
    But... if you'd simply installed your second Windows to the second SSD while the first Windows/SSD was still cabled and visible, the second Windows install would have done everything you're now asking to be done.  The existing 1-OS boot menu (on the first SSD) would have been seen and updated by the Windows installer, to add the second Windows to the menu which would thus now be a 2-OS boot menu.  The second Windows would get installed wherever you wanted it to get installed (i.e. to the second SSD), and all would be well with the world.
    Note that had this taken place, no second "system reserved" partition (marked "active", and housing the second copy of Boot Manager) would have been created on the second SSD with the second installed Windows. The existing "system reserved" (marked "active", and living on the first drive in the BIOS boot sequence list) would simply have had its boot menu updated from 1-OS to 2-OS, and you'd be home free right now.
    This is exactly how Boot Manager works. I'm sure your old HP machine had such a setup, with your two Windows installed sequentially over time, and with the second one recognizing the first one's existence and adding itself to the boot menu to produce a 2-OS boot menu which is what you saw.  That wasn't from the BIOS. It was from Windows Boot Manager handling a 2-OS boot menu.
    So, what can you do now?  Well, technically, you only need one "active" partition (i.e. "system reserved", where Boot Manager lives) on the first SSD in your BIOS boot sequence list. You won't need the second "system reserved" which in my opinion was probably created (unnecessarily) when you did your second Windows install with the first SSD temporarily disconnected.
    But the goal here is to get the 1-OS boot menu that's on the first SSD "system reserved" partition updated, to add the second Windows on the second SSD, producing a 2-OS boot menu.  And to do that you can use a wonderful 3rd-party product named EasyBCD. It is a tool to maintain your boot menu, and you can manually do things after-the-fact (like now) which you should have done before, or simply to perform maintenance or changes.
    So, with both SSD's cabled and operational (your current booted Windows will appear as C, and probably your other drive's Windows partition will thus appear as D to the current booted Windows), you run EasyBCD.  It really doesn't matter which Windows is on the first SSD and that is first in the BIOS boot sequence, only that it will be the boot menu in the "system reserved" partition on that drive which will be manipulated by EasyBCD to become the 2-OS menu.  You can make either Windows the default (which will auto-boot in 10 seconds if you don't select the other Windows), no matter which SSD it's on.
    You can view the current boot menu (from the currently booted Windows) via EDIT.  You pick which entry is to be the "default".
    To add a new entry to the boot menu, push the ADD button and navigate to the drive (D) the Windows to be added lives on.
    If you don't already have same, I would recommend you have a "system image" backup of both of your bootable Windows drives (to an external USB 3.0 drive, ideally), so that if you're skittish about doing this you'll at least be able to quickly and easily restore what you currently have from your backups.
    But believe me, EasyBCD can be trusted to do exactly what you want to do... which is to create a 2-OS boot menu on your first drive's "system reserved" partition. This 2-OS boot menu will name BOTH of your two bootable Windows, from your two SSD drives.  You won't need to push F12 to select the boot device, just let the machine go to the first drive in the boot sequence and kick off Boot Manager, and the rest will behave exactly as you are now seeking.
    Let me know if you have questions.  And for sure, let us know how it turns out.

  • Frequent issues with supplied SSD in 17" 2011 MBP

    Hi all,
    Perhaps someone can help?
    I've recently (in the last couple of months) been having problems with the SSD in my early-2011 17" MBP. The model of the SSD (from System Profiler) is APPLE SSD TS256C.
    The problems eems to occur after emptying the Trash when it has files of large sizes in it (video files of 1 or more GB typically). I empty the Trash, and the available space showing for the drive gets bigger,a s expected, but then when I try to make use of the drive (for example by copying files from another drive to it) I am told there isn't enough free space (when there clearly ought to be).
    Example from earlier today:
    I had 60GB available.
    I put around 30 GB of stuff in the Trash and emptied it.
    Available space now shows 90GB free.
    I try to copy 75GB from an external drive onto the SSD, but am told there isn't enough free space.
    In a attempt to fix the problem, I did what I have done on the 3 previous occassions: Restart the computer, hold down Cmd+R and run Disk Utility from there. Here I can repair the SSD (as it has the OS on).
    This is what Disk Utility showed me:
    Verifying volume “Hard Drive”
    Checking file systemPerforming live verification.
    Checking Journaled HFS Plus volume.
    Checking extents overflow file.
    Checking catalog file.
    Incorrect block count for file Hospital Records - 100k YouTube Subscribers.mov
    (It should be 11029 instead of 144729)
    Incorrect block count for file Netsky Live - Backstage at the Electric Brixton.mov
    (It should be 12062 instead of 606074)
    Incorrect block count for file Netsky Live - Lotto Arena 2013 Promo.mov
    (It should be 7177 instead of 135443)
    Checking multi-linked files.
    Checking catalog hierarchy.
    Checking extended attributes file.
    Checking volume bitmap.
    Volume bitmap needs minor repair for orphaned blocks
    Checking volume information.
    Invalid volume free block count
    (It should be 11712443 instead of 10811938)
    The volume Hard Drive was found corrupt and needs to be repaired.
    Error: This disk needs to be repaired using the Recovery HD. Restart your computer, holding down the Command key and the R key until you see the Apple logo. When the OS X Utilities window appears, choose Disk Utility.
    I ran it a couple of times (as on previous occasions) until no errors were reported.
    On previous occassions, upon restarting, things went back to normal, but this time I am still being told there is not enough free space, though Get Info shows 121GB available.
    So I have some questions:
    What is going on?
    Why does this keep happening?
    What can I do to solve my current issue?
    What can I do to stop this from happeneing again?
    Many thanks in advance...

    I'd totally forgotten about this until I got a notification that you had replied.
    I no longer have this problem.vaguely remember calling up Crucial (who make my second SSD) and they said something about leaving the machine on, but not doing anything on it for 24 hours or something. So it has to stay switched on, not go to sleep (dim your screen though) and don't touch your keyboard or mouse for a full 24 hours... maybe it was a bit longer... maybe it had to be at the login screen (can't remember)... and in this time it will run some automatic repair thing.
    It was so long ago I really can't remember the spcifics - but have a hunt around for things to that effect. Or call Apple/Crucial and mention what I've just said, see if it makes any sense to them and get them to advise the exact corect procedure.
