GE60 0ND-463UK and RAM question

I have bought myself the MSI GE60 0ND-463UK and would like to upgrade my laptop to 16gb (as apparantly the max is 16gb)
However I have found that the i7 3630QM supports 32GB of ram however, MSi site states the Max is 16GB and has only 2 slots but after a little searching seeing that my laptop has 4 slots (currently unable to open the back of my laptop so here I am)
I would like to confirm if my max is 16gb and has only 2 slots.
As CPU-Z states it has 4 slots and a quick search found a few sites talking about ge60 0nd having 4 slots for ram.
I'm currently ready to purchase 4x4gb as it's a lot cheaper than 2x8 and would like to be reassured before I purchase them.
RAM I'm planning to buy £95 for 4x4 or £115 for 2x8 - Kingston HyperX Plug in and Play DDR3 1600MHz CL9 8GB SODIMM Memory Module (Kit of 2)
So would like to confirm 4 slots so I save £20 as I'm really skint :P
Thanks.

it has 2 DIMM slots

  • MSI GE60 0ND BIOS and EC Request

My System (GE60 0ND-228XTH) came with FreeDos pre-installed.
    BIOS Version: E16GAIMS.10F
    BIOS Build:     12/18/2012 15:20:43
    EC Version:    16GAEMS Ver4.04
    EC Build:        04/26/2012
The real need of this request is to fix the Wireless Connection Drop issue (happens randomly or after waking up) occurred in Windows 8 OS.
    I have tried ...
      - Every combination of BIOS/EC that are provided in the official MSI page and compatible with my System.
      - Every SCM that is compatible with Windows 8 OS.
      - Any solution about Connection Drop issue in Windows 8 OS.
    but still no luck.
The best bet is to use
     - E16GAIMS.10F   BIOS
     - 16GAEMS1.505  EC
Though the problem still persist, the frequency of occurrence is less than other approaches.
Since this above EC firmware is for Windows 8 System, so this is not the best workaround for my system.
That is why my assumption came up with BIOS/EC and made this request.
This problem is NEVER shown in the Windows 7 OS and any Linux Distributions.
Also, can you add any updates possible for BIOS and EC.
I will make a donation as soon as possible after your confirmation.
    Thank in advance.
Edit: Added Current BIOS Configuration Screen.

its probably wifi driver related or something specified for win8
    try different wifi drivers
I already tried many drivers from the MSI itself, Intel, even other Notebook Manufacturers, but still not working.
I have tested Windows 8 in my friend's notebook(DELL) that has similar Wireless Adapter and everything working fine without issues like mine, so that means Windows 8 is not the culprit.

This is one of solutions I've tried long ago and it failed.

  • Graphics card and ram question

I am currently using a Toshiba Satellite L305D and i am trying to play arma 2 on it. But whenever i try to play the game is very slow and laggy. Is this due to my graphics card or ram? The gameplay is just very laggy. I need some help because i dont know what to upgrade in order to make this laptop a better gaming laptop even though it is not intended to be a gaming laptop. What things do i need for me to make it a gaming laptop? Better graphics card? more ram? better processor? Please help!!!

Hi there! The only thing you can really upgrade is the RAM on the notebook.

  • K9A2 Crossfire and Ram question

I have a K9A2 platinum with an AMD phenom 9850BE rig running crossfire.
    The specs are...
    K9A2 Platinum
    Phenom 9850 Black
Two Asus 3870 Top (these are in the first and 3rd PCIE slots down, the manual said these were the x16)
    4GB G.Skill ddr2 1066 (These are in the 3rd and 4th slot, only running at 800)
    Seagate Barracuda 7200 250GB Sata 3
    Vista 64 with SP1 and DX 10.
    1) Am I running the cards in the correct slots for crossfire? I'm currently populating the the pxe1 and pxe4 slots. (I might be butchering the actual names of those slots.)
    2) Catalyst 8.5 says that crossfire is enabled. 3dmark vantage score was 87xx, is this low?
      - After installing SP1 and DX 10.1 3dmark vantage is all messed up. Displays funky colors.
    3) I tried using the auto ram timings and increasing the voltage to achieve 1066 from 800. When I did this my timings went from 5-5-5-15 to 5-5-7-20, or something along these lines. Is this normal? Is there a way to manually adjust this memory to achieve the correct speed and timings?
    4) 3dmark06 gave a score of 13xxx with crossfire. I disabled crossfire from the catalyst control panel and re-ran the test and hit 10xxx. Both of these scores seem low, can anyone verify.
Thanks for your help and input.

Ok, I fixed the ram and did a little research so I was able to perform the manual timings.
Under the Cell menu I changed the DRAM Timing Mode from auto to both and set the correct timings for my memory, 5-5-5-15.
I made sure the voltage was upped to 2.1 as per some suggestions on NewEgg but memory speed was still around 850ish. I had to change the FSB/Memory ratio from auto to the last setting, something like 2:2.33? Once I did this I saw the memory speed up to the 1066 that I was looking for.
If I now increase the FSB the memory overclocks even further, this makes sense because it's a ratio. What am I missing? I want to be able to clock my phenom up to around 2.7-2.8 and have the memory @ 1066. How can I make the memory run at 1066 without utilizing the FSB/Mem ratio.
Thanks for your help and getting me this far!

  • K8n neo2 heatsink and ram question

    Hi there
i am planning to buy a whole new rig soon and the mobo id like to buy is the k8n neo2...
From what i have found using the search function, OCZ ram seems to work fine with all msi a64 mobos, so this shouldnt be a problem anymore i guess...
    (ram = 2 x 512MB OCZ PC3700 EB Platinum Edition)
What i couldnt really find via the search function was which cooler is the best buy fot ose on the neo2 platinum...
Im thinking of a thermalright SLK-948U but i dont see any the K8N neo2 on the motherboard compatibility list :s
Since the list isnt updated that often, it might be possible that the heatsink IS compatible with this mobo and thats why im asking
is there anybody who has this combo or knows if its (not) working?
    thx in advance :D

SLK948 works great on the NEO2 - i have one on my board and theres no fitting problem at all.

  • GE60 0ND - Updating and Reconfiguring,.. No new updates....

    Problem #1236735 after RMA'd
A new issue has occured now, everytime I don't shut down my laptop for some reason, I have to spend over an hour waiting for "updating system then into configuring changes"...
THERE ARE NO NEW WINDOWS UPDATES as I've been checking every night.. This is an EXTREMELY ANNOYING bug or error that keeps repeating, is there a way to uninstall all windows updates to reinstall one by one as I installed all 128 at once when my laptop was RMA'd.

Try running the command "lpksetup" and check if there're some unnecessary language packs. You can manually remove them so that the system won't waste your time waiting to reboot or shut down.

  • MSI 975x Powerup edition and ram question

I am thinking on upgrading my ram on the board mentioned above I have 2GB or corsair which works fine anyone here know if I add another 2GB does it need to be corsair or could I use something like kingston or kingmax or whatever? Or does it need to be the exact same corsair ram. In the past this wasn't an issue but this board is extremely fussy.
I am wondering if it would affect dual channel operation. The corsair ram is about 100 dollars more for 2GB not a big deal I just don't feel like driving to another city to get it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Take care,
    Bob

you should get all 4 sticks the SAME model name. If you get different sets of pairs, it's more likely they will run into issue. However, in most case, they still can run just good enough. But if you're going into overclocking, you will hit the bottleneck easier compared to 4 same sticks.

  • GE60 0ND, 100% HDD activity ruins performance and start up time

    MSi GE60 0ND-463UK
    i7 3630QM
    GTX 660M
    16GB Corsair Vengeance RAM 1600Mhz
Basically lately my laptop has begun starting up with 100% HDD activity and the odd occasion with it as well and that completely hults my laptops performance and is VERY ANNOYING, this ever happened before so I'm assuming something has gone wrong and would hope someone can help identify the issue.
The most common cause of my 100% HDD activity and laptop performance dip is: System (ntoskrnl) NT Kernal and System.
Also have another issue that makes me close to strangling a random person and that is updating and reconfiguring can take 30 MINUTES TO AN HOUR TO DO..................................... ............... Please tell me there is a solution for this, as I can't be the only person with this issue.

The 100% HDD activity sounds really strange.....Almost sounds like there is something else going on. Like you have a virus or trojan.
As far as the updating and reconfiguring, there's a thread here SOMEWHERE (I can't remember the name, but it's in the notebooks forum) that explains how to fix it. I would do a forum search in this forum for "Windows 8 updating reconfiguring" and you should be able to find it there. You're not the only person who has had this issue.

  • MSi GE60 0ND - Fan has started to randomly speed up slow down

    MSi GE60 0ND-463UK
    I7 3630QM
    GTX660M
    Windows 8 64 bit
As of yesterday, my laptop has started to weirdly (under no loading on GPU or CPU, CPU 20% max during HD video watching on Youtube/Twitch.tv) causing my fan to go from being quiet to shoot up in speed, this seems to stop when plugged in but when on battery power it's becoming more frequent. The only thing that is being done on the laptop when this happens is internet browser use.
I cleaned my laptop 2 days before yesterday so it can't be a heat issue or dust issue. I'm quite clueless right now. I'm not what else to tell you, as that's all I've done. No updates to windows, no software updates on anything for over a week now I believe. Cable issue maybe?
Hope I can get some info on this.

Yes, indeed the MSI download servers seems to be crapped out right now.
But i have a backup of wanted firmware at my PC,
im attach it here for you.
For flashing you can use >>Clear CMOS Guide<<
point to mode 1 then point to archive file.
wait the USB key to be prepared, then reboot your notebook.
go in BIOS setup, then set boot mode to legacy,
then save and exit, and press F11 at bios post/logo screen for BBC popup with storages,
when USB key appear choose it to boot from it and proceed with update
USB prepared properly according to the Software. Restarted my laptop
Legacy mode engaged, saved ad exited, pressed F11, found my USB Kingston, and this is the message I received when selected. Not quite sure what it meant but clearly something is wrong.

  • GE60 0ND-042US HDMI output

    Hi everyone.
I just got the GE60 0ND-042US and I'm really liking it so far. I'm just now trying to figure out how to use the HDMI output. I searched the forums and couldn't find any specific answers to what I'm seeing.
After looking through the these forums, I understand that the HDMI port is only powered by the 660m and not the Intel card. My problem is, I can't seem to force the 660m to turn on outside of a game. Even with a game that uses the 660m running, I can't then try to switch to mirrored or extended mode and have the HDMI port show up in the Display Settings for screen resolution. The only port that shows up is the VGA port and any advaced options still go to the Intel graphics card, so that isn't what I need.
Does anyone know how to make this work? I'm sure I'm doing something wrong, but I don't know what else to try at this point. I even checked in the BIOS and I don't see any settings there to force it to use the nvidia card. It would be nice to be able to watch video on my HD TV. Thanks!

    GE60 0ND-042US - Stock configuration from MSI

    Thank you for your reply.
If the Intel card also controls the HDMI port, that could be a good thing as I primarily just want to use the HDMI port to show video on my TV, rather than play 3D games. The problem is I still can't get anything out of it.
Whenever I switch to mirrored or extended mode, the only port that is listed is the VGA port. I see no options to use the HDMI port at all. The cable is a good cable and works as I can pull it out of my computer and plug it back into the PS3 and everything is fine.
I was originally thinking that I had to force the nvidia card on in order to get HDMI out to work. But if that is not the case, that's good. I just need a way to turn the HDMI output on.
Please let me know. I'm sure it's something simple that I'm just not seeing, but it just doesn't seem to want to work for me.
Thank you for any help you have.

  • 256GB mSATA install in GE60 0ND-257US... possible?

I just bought a GE60 0ND-257US, and I want to put in an SSD.  I've been searching the net for a while and can't find any definitive answer if what I want to do is possible, and I'm hoping I've come to the right place.
    1) Does my laptop support a 256GB mSATA SSD?  I have seen a few hints that the GE60's only support 128GB mSATA drives, but nothing definitive either way... is this true or false?
    2) Is it possible to clone the factory installed partitions from the HD onto the mSATA SSD and have everything be the same?  Or will I have to buy a new OS license and do a fresh install?  It appears I don't have a product key for Win8 so I'm assuming that would be the case if a simple disk clone isn't possible.
FWIW I am a very experienced computer user/builder who has imaged and copied hard drives dozens of times, but this is my first laptop, so I don't have any experience with mSATA devices, and it is also my first experience with a computer that came with (what appears to be) a limited OEM OS license.
Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

Thanks again darkhawk, that is once again very helpful.   I feel a bit more confident having read a few other things as well that the larger size SSD won't be a problem.
About win8 pro, yeah the comparative feature set over standard 8 didn't look that extraordinary, the only interesting part to me would be the built-in drive encryption.  However, $40 is a pretty good price.  I have a few other machines I could use it on besides, if I decide not to upgrade the laptop.  Is there any indication though that MS is going to add features to pro, or that it will ever be anything more than what it is now?
Your setup sounds sweet... SSD prices are finally reaching a nice spot so it might be time to raid a couple in my desktop.
    Thanks again and
NP. Always willing to provide my experiences for others.
I honestly wouldn't count on them adding anything to Windows 8 at this point. Reason being? They're hoping to get the next version of Windows out in 2015 if I remember right. So if everything goes according to play, Windows 8 will only have a 2 year shelf life.......again, just my thoughts, but at this point, WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) when it comes to Windows 8. You get a terrible, non-multitasking interface that really just gets in the way 100% of the time unless you disable the metro UI. I'd stick with Win7 and it's stability, as there's NOTHING out there yet that requires you to be running Windows 8.

  • Stop error 0x000000D1 in MSI GE60 0nd/0nc

    Hello,
i just I just bought a few days ago the laptop MSI GE60 0nd/0nc and until now got few blue screens..
all of the blue screens have the same .
the stop errors is 0x000000D1 ..
Picture of one of the blue screens:
files and data of my blue screens:
    dropbox.com/s/qftex61g2hsqkv1/Minidump.rar
I do not know why this is happening.
But until now I have tried several things to solve the problem that information I can provide:
When I bought the computer, the computer came without an operating system (Windows). it was only freeDOS.
I installed Windows 7 (the X17-24281.iso copy from here - official-windows-7-sp1-iso-image-downloads-t12325.html with Valid serial i have). Then the blue screen happened to me at the first time. the First blue screen was happened to me while I was trying to change the my partitions in my Hard Disk Through the "Create and format a hard disk partitions" in Windows 7.
I can say definitively - it happened on a clean Windows - Before I installed any drivers from my disc that came with the computer.
But the first blue screen not saved and documented. It is not included in the download, and it's not in the images.
I re-installed windows and it is deleted.
The other times it happened to me was after i have installed the drivers.
and this was happen not when i played games..
Most times it happened when i used the softwere 3ds max 2013.
The strange thing is that it did not happen and not even once in heavy game when the computer work most hard.
I played for hours the game Far Cry 3 on ULTRA settings and no blue screens at all..
    this point is very strange.
not all of my blue screens happened While 3ds max 2013 running but most of them.
i downloaded the software "bluescreenview" and Every time i got a blue screen, i looked in that Software.
Most of the blue screens was Show me that the broblem is with the ntoskrnl.exe.
but by Search on Google - this info was not good enough for me because According to Google - this exe do Lots of general things.
Yesterday i got a new blue screen with the same Error Message - DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
but this blue screen gave me more info About the problem -
According to "bluescreenview" i saw that there was Another file (with the ntoskrnl.exe) that Caused the problem.
    that file is "netwsw00.sys" -
I did a Google search and it gave me much more information ..
The problem is with the intel wireless card.
After some searching, I came to a topic at Intel forum:
    communities.intel.com/thread/33377?start=15&tstart=0
In this topic people have complained about this problem (Blue screen).
On the second page of the topic someone gave a link to an old driver for the intel wireless card.
he said that he Does not have that problem with this driver. the old driver version is 14.2.0.10.
so i installed this driver and after that i thought I solved the problem...
Because after that I did not get a blue screen for a long time ...
I turned on the 3ds max and for hours - laptop worked properly.
I did a lot in that time. I played far cry 3 and I used a lot on the computer.
but at the end - it happened again. While 3ds Max and Photoshop running.
This was a blue screen with the same message.
I do not know what to do.
    Please help me!

Quote from: darkhawk on 13-May-13, 06:43:40
Ok, first off, the link you provided does NOT pertain to you at all. Your problem is pertaining a stop error. The problem at that link is related to the e22w8x64.sys which is completely different.
Are you overclocking the computer at all?
Are you 100% certain that the hard drive is NOT failing?
    You are right.
But I'm sure that it is the Wii-fi.
Because the file netwsw00.sys related to the intel wireless card.
and i found a topic about BSOD with this file on intel forums and i tried the solution but it does not solve my problem.
    i also installed these drivers:
    https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=164835.msg1215981#msg1215981
for the killer network divice in case that the problam is with the killer network.
what i am doing is to search BSOD problems with the intel wireless card and just try the solutions even if those problams is not the same as my.. i just think that maybe one solution might would solve my problem.
In fact, I think I found someone's topic here with the same problem:
    https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=168821.0
The solution there is to disable the 802.11n.. but i have more ideas and I want to try it and I would rather try anything because it's the last option for me.
By the frequency of these blue screens, the impression I get is that it's a case of instability.
These blue screens happen after activities related to intel wireless card.
For example - it happened after I turned of the wii-fi and then turned on through the S-Bur.
The last time it happened to me was when I tried to get into online mode in some game.
But because I can not make more blue screens by repeating the steps I did, it leads me to think that the problem is instability.
I tried to think what causes instability and that's all that came to mind:
    * Heat
    * memory leak in the intel wireless card or something similar
    * Hardware problem in intel wireless card
So what I thought to do now is set that the intel wireless card will not work too hard.
And I think I found a place to set it but I'm not sure.
In Device Manager I pressed right button on the intel wireless card and then I clicked on "Properties".
in "Advanced" tab i found that these are the options I can change:
My goal is to change everything that might cause the card to work harder ..
so i thought to change "Transmit Power" and ""Roaming Aggressiveness"
Both of them were defined to "5. Highest".
    i changed it to "2. Medium-low".
i hope that it will solve the problem...

Why did you update it 4 times?
    What OS are you using?

Another thing to consider, a free to use download (donationware) is
MacTracker; a small data base of Apple and Macintosh product specs.
If you don't already have it, see: http://www.mactracker.ca to download.
Some online manual sites had unauthorized copies of protected works
and those sites were pulled from the internet; but they had service
manuals in pdf for many models of computers. You may be able to get
the official versions of pdf manuals through a subscription service for
an annual fee; this may require searching and asking questions. It may
also require an IT budget you may not have, to get a Mac-only archive.
At one point I was given some technical support information to trouble-
shoot my own ailing under warranty Apple computer(s) and the information
is very helpful, when you have a need for the details they contain.
I was careful to use them for non-invasive troubleshooting only.
One older online source appears to have ftp:// links, but I was never
able to make them work. The site may not have valid content or could
be somehow blocked; so if you find such a site by searching for older
Apple Manuals online, it may not yield anything. Or it may be illegal.
Some of the low-end RAM chips can be problematic; I found at least
one to add major issues in my iMacG4 and made it hard to diagnose
another major hardware problem. Tossing the cheaper RAM (at retail
was higher cost than decent RAM) was the best thing; got a better one.
There should be a little information on boot ROM (firmware) per model in
the MacTracker database you can use offline. You may need to know more
about the use of Open Firmware in Macs. Hope this helps some.
PS: for a time, you could get tech manuals on CD from places
such as http://www.applerescue.com/ (they have OS installers
on disc for sale there, primarily) and also a search of the web
may get you a source of tech books for repair service.
