GE60 HDMI + VGA

Is it possible to use two external monitors with this laptop? I try hooking one up via HDMI and one via VGA but it will only enable one at a time.

From what I understand this laptop has two graphics processors, an nvidia one and intel one. Should it not be possible to output to all three?
The first sentence is true. The problem is that only 1 can be enabled to output at 1 time. That's part of the whole 'switching' graphics card part (ie Optimus). So only the Intel, or the NVidia, can output to the screen/monitors at a time.
On top of that, if I remember right, I don't think the Intel supports more than 2 monitors as well. Actually, I lie, they do support 3 monitors, but not in the configuration that our notebook has.....
See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel_HD_Graphics under the '3 active displays' portion.....

HDMI is thje preferred digital replacemnt for older analog video standards, which your other choices use. It offers far higher signal and definition quality.
Apple has an adapter that is used with your Thunderbolt port/ Mini DisplayPort, if yours is equipped as such.
I've not had a problem with this. It is a Belkin.

  • Can I use mini dp/HDMI/VGA same time?

hi ,I have a portege z10t, I want to connect the machine with 3 LG monitors, is it possible to plug the monitors to z10t's ports(mini dp/hdmi/vga)? some post says that you can only have one output between mini display port and HDMI, is this true ,thanks for you help

There's a number of videos on YouTube on how to do this. You will probably need a multi display adapter.

  • HDCP Error with HDMI-VGA connections

We have been using Apple TV 3 Software Version 7.0.2(6915) for connecting the Apple TV to classroom projectors that have a VGA port in. This was working perfectly till last week, and it seems a new software update was pushed to the Apple TV device now we get "This Content Requires HDCP for playback". Tried multiple different options of soft and hard reboots, resets and restarts nothing helps. Connecting the same Apple TV using HDMI-HDMI cable works fine. We are using Kanex HDMI-VGA adapter. If someone has the same issue please write back since there have 26 Apple TVs in the school and is being actively used by instructors to project their work to the class.

As far as I know, 7.0.2(6915) is the latest software version & nothing new has been pushed out by Apple since its release months ago.
You problem is most likely exactly what the error message indicates: the content (for example commercial movies from a streaming service or an iTunes library) you are trying play on the ATV is protected by the HDCP encryption standard, so unless the Kanex adaptor supports HDCP internally, the ATV will not output the protected content to it.
I looked on the Kanex website to see if they claim the ATV Pro adaptor supports HDCP but nothing there says if it does or doesn't. Also, one of the U.S. Apple Store questions about the device has conflicting answers for that, so I suggest you contact Kanex directly for a more definitive answer & perhaps some help with the issue.
Failing that, you could try your setup with some content you know is not protected by HDCP (like a home movie in an iTunes library). If that works, then the problem almost certainly is that the Kanex doesn't support HDCP & you will not be able to use it with any content so protected.

  • I have a Mini DisplayPort to VGA adapter, then I purchased 3 VGA adapters: a VGA to HDMI, VGA to Component, and VGA to RCA. When I hook them up to my TV (I've tried multiple TVs) they do not detect a display, even when I click Detect Displays.

Does anyone have any suggestions on a solution for this?  The only other Mini DP I found was a HDMI connection.  I want to make sure I can connect to not only TV's via HDMI, Component or RCA, but also projectors (some of which may be older requiring a Component or RCA connection).
    I'm using this Mini DisplayPort:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB572Z/A?fnode=MTY1NDA3Ng&mco=MTA4NDU0NjA
These are the VGA Adapters I'm using:
    VGA to HDMI:
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001OLCHJ6
    VGA to Component:
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000P3Q0YW
    VGA to RCA:
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000Y7T5UU
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

None of the three lower adapters pictured in your post will do you any good with your MBP.
    1. The VGA-HDMI adapter does the reverse of what you want: it yields VGA output from HDMI input. The opposite is not possible; a VGA input does not contain all the information necessary to create an HDMI output. You'll have to get a direct mini-Displayport-to-HDMI adapter instead.
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/H1824ZM/A/Moshi_Mini_DisplayPort_to_HDMI_Adapt er?mco=MTY3ODQ5OTY
    2. VGA-Component: Lots of posters here when the MDP-equipped MBs and MBPs first came out tried adapters like this one with no success. What does work with the MDP (and a VGA adapter) is a converter box like this:
    http://www.amazon.com/Startech-Component-YPbPr-Video-Converter/dp/B000G6Y0S6
    3. VGA-Composite: This doesn't work with MBPs either. For Composite or S-Video output, you need a converter box like this:
    http://www.amazon.com/PC-To-TV-Video-Converter/dp/B001CJOLBW/ref=pd_cp_e_2
    or this:
    http://www.startech.com/AV/Converters/Video/High-Resolution-PC-VGA-to-TV-Convert er-with-Remote-Control~VGA2NTSCPRO
These converter boxes will work fine in combination with your Apple MDP-VGA adapter.

  • [MOVED] H55 chipset and KMS with HDMI/VGA

I recently purchased a Shuttle SH55J2. As there seems to be KMS issues with the Auburndale chipset and the VGA output (output is wavey with KMS on, no X with KMS off), I am attempting to get the HDMI output working with my monitor. I am using a Dell E248WFP which has VGA and DVI input. I am using an HDMI cable with an HDMI-DVI converter.
The problem is the monitor comes up with screen with green background and white text starting from bios all the way through boot to login. I have attempted changing the colorspace of the monitor from RGB to YPbPr, but it simply changes the color of the background. Any clues on how to fix this?
New: I've bought a new hdmi capable monitor. However, with KMS enabled using HDMI->HDMI, the monitor receives no signal, while the HDMI->DVI still has the color problems. With KMS off, HDMI->HDMI works and HDMI->DVI has no signal. So now it appears the KMS is the real issue.

It's likely that the laptop's attempting to output audio through the HDMI as well. Have you tried this? Right-click on the speaker icon in the notification area near the clock (in Desktop mode) and select "Playback devices." What's listed there, and what has the green check mark? Try selecting your speakers and clicking "Set Default."

  • Connecting Dual Monitors: HDMI & VGA to MacBook Pro (Non-Retina)?

    Whats up Apple Fam,
So i have a MacBook Pro along with a LCD TV i use as an external monitor and its connected via Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter.
Now, i’d like to add an additional computer monitor, the cable coming out of it will be a VGA. Hence my question; what type of adapter will i need to accomplish my goal while achieving it at the lowest price possible?
My only concern is that the Mini DisplayPort is already being used by the LCD TV. So i’m a bit unsure what to do. Any help is appreciated. Thanks !

You could purchase 2 mini displayport to DVI adapters ($30 ea) and use the 2 Thunderbolt ports. I have one external DVI monitor connected to 1 of my Thunderbolt ports. Works great!
Sorry my mistake. You said non-Retina.

  • Satellite L550-11k - HDMI + VGA at the same time?

    Hi there,
I have Satellite L550-11k laptop, and i was wondering if i can have external monitor working hooked up on VGA port and HDMI monitor working ( or just audio from hdmi ) at the same time.
I tried and have no luck making it work together.
I am using Ubuntu 10.04 as OS, and i think it's not problem related to operating system.
    Thanks in advance.
    Kind Regards

I was able to select HDMI and VGA,( my built in monitor turned off ) but as i don't have a third monitor ( only laptop one and one external ) i could not test is there a picture on HDMI output but i can say there is no sound so i assume there is no picture also. I just needed sound from HDMI. Maybe i will be able to test it on summer. Thanks on your quick reply. I was wondering is this is a limitation of the graphics adapter ? By the way, it seems Dynadock is not compatible with Linux operating systems.

  • Hdmi, VGA, RCA adapters - analog hdmi?

So I'm a bit foggy on this. I have the iPad 1 and have the RCA and VGA adapters that work great. Now I can get the hdmi to work at 720 from what I understand. Isn't hdmi digital? Does iPad 1 output digital and analog? Will my RCA and VGA adapters work on the ipad2? It's a big deal to me to be able to use my iPad on older TVs without hdmi (cabin, deck).

Go to http://store.apple.com and search for this accessory: Apple Composite AV Cable
    That will do the trick.

  • HDMI + VGA Question // HP DV7-4000 series.

    Dear Friends,
I have a question about usig external monitor(s) with my HP DV7.  The specific model # is DV7-4287cl
I have both an HDMI port and a VGA port on this model. I plan to use an external monitor with it but I wonder if it is not possible to use two external monitors with it given I have two separate ports?
This may be a dumb question but I have a specific need to use an external monitor with my notebook, and having two instead of one wouldn't be a bad option.
    Many thanks, in advance.
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

You can use one external monitor. The hdmi port will provide a much clearer sharper picture, but either that or the vga port will be acceptable. Two outputs is the limit of the video card, and one of those is always the built in laptop display.

  • HDMI, VGA and Macbook multiple monitors?

    Hi there,
    Hope you guys can help,
Don't know if this is possible and have been browsing the internet for a while looking for a solution.
In my home studio I have a PC flat-screen monitor and am buying a HDTV. I would the HDMI and Monitor to act as an extended monitors for my macbook pro.
This setup would allow me to use each screen for a different function, e.g. Daw, Video, File viewer.
hope someone can let me know if this is possible, any help is appreciated!
    Thanks
    Jonny

I have a similar question. I'd like to run 2 or 3 different monitors simultaneously off my MacBook Pro in the office, including a typical 21 inch monitor and a Samsung 40 inch HDTV.
I'd like to be able to to clone the laptop screen on to one 21 inch monitor, extend the desktop on to a second 21 inch monitor, and extend it further or clone the second extended monitor on to the 40 inch monitor. The 40 inch monitor probably operates at a different resolution than the 21 inch monitors.
I've been looking at different possible alternatives for equipment to accommodate this. I've heard about:
the Maxtor DualHead2Go Digital Edition Dual Monitor Stretcher with DVI Output ($230), http://www.markertek.com/Cables-Connectors-Adapters/Video-Adapters/VGA-Adapters/ Matrox/D2G-A2D-IF.xhtml
    and the Arkview USB-DH88 PC-to-TV Multi-Display Video Adapter - USB 2.0 to DVI/VGA/HDMI, 1400 x 1050, http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-Details.asp?EdpNo=39215 59&sku=M501-1285&SRCCODE=WEM1993BY&cmmmc=Email-_-Main-_-WEM1993--tiger ($55)
There may be other choices. Anybody know whether these will work for what I want to do?

  • Mini-HDMI to VGA does not work with projectors having long cables

    Hi
I use a ThinkPad Yoga with Windows 8.1 and have problems to get a video signal to some projectors using a Mini-HDMI VGA adapter like this http://www.amazon.com/Cable-Matters-Active-Female-Adapter/dp/B00879ELGA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=13979...
Usually it works but in some lecture/presentation rooms projectors show "no signal" (I changed all possible graphic settings). There seems to be a problem with cable length because after using a VGA repeater increasing video signal strength projectors show a picture. But the problem is those VGA repeaters are quite expensive and too big (if you are travelling). Some Mini-HDMI VGA adapters have USB ports to connect them to a power source but this does not really help to increase signal strength.I find this issue very annoying because all other (older) laptops with VGA ports or MacBooks with displayport-VGA adapters do not have this problem and produce a video signal that is strong enough to connect to projectors with long cables.
    My questions are:
    a) Is it possible to adjust my ThinkPad hardware settings to improve signal strength?
    b) If not, is there a small Mini-HDMI VGA adapter that produces a signal strong enough to connect projectors with long cables?
    c) If not, is there an affordable and small VGA repeater that does the job?
    Thanks!

    1) that is not possible
    2) Why not get a USB2VGA converter?

  • Dual Monitor Hook-up, DVI/VGA/HDMI?

I think it's time to retire my aging samsung 22" and buy a few 23" LED's to replace it.
My graphics card only has DVI out (x2), and the 3 monitors I'm looking at do not have dual DVI (either dual HDMI and DVI, or DVI/VGA/HDMI), so I would need adapters from DVI to HDMI/VGA. I'm guessing that's all handled at the adapter/hardware level, so linux should have no problem finding them, but if I'm hooking 1 up natively to DVI, and the other through an adapter (or both through adapters), will I notice any quality difference between the 2 monitors?

    Cyrusm wrote:
Personally I use my HDMI monitor as my main monitor and have the secondary monitor attatched to VGA. I can't really tell the difference in performance between the two, however I never work with anything terribly graphics intensive.
and it hurts to hear that my Samsung 22" is also  'aging'  of course so is my 17" secondary I guess maybe that'll be my next investment...
    Sorry about the aging comment
But this is the answer I was looking for! I don't want to have 1 monitor hooked up via HDMI and the other VGA and be able to see a noticeable difference between the 2. I don't do anything graphics intensive either.
    Thanks for all the responses!
