Geekbench score should be higher (new Mac vs older Mac)
Hello, I have a Mac Pro 2006 1,1 model that has been upgraded to an 8-core x5355 cpu, a 280x gpu, an ssd drive, etc. its geekbench score went from about 4,800 to about 9,500 (after these additions). After that, i ran a geekbench test on another, newer Mac, and the score was at about 10,500, but it performed VASTLY superior to the older Mac. For example, when using Open Broadcast to stream a video game running on the mac to Twitch.tv, the cpu usage would be at around 50 percent (so all 8 cores would show about 50 percent usage each(, and if i tried to view my broadcast simultaneously on google chrome, it would just to about 80 percent usage. On the newer Mac, I ran the same test, and it was only at about 5-10 percent usage for each of the 8 cores when simply streaming, and about 10-20 usage when streaming AND viewing the stream on google chrome. I even added more window captures to the feed, and it wouldnt tax the CPU. The GPUs were the same in the comparisons. So does that mean that geekbench isn't really testing CPU performance, or something?
The next upgrade for your 1,1:
Lycom DT-120 M.2 PCIe to PCIe 3.0 x4 Adapter (Support M.2 PCIe 2280, 2260, 2242)
Samsung XP941 256GB PCIe 2.0 x4 M.2 SSD MZHPU256HCGL at Amazon
XP941 bootable in the '09 MacPro - Bootable NGFF PCIE SSD - Page 9
* XP941 are bootable in all Mac Pro models and are of the same design as the blade SSD used in nMPs

Hi guys,
I can only leave my MacBook Pro unplugged for an hour maximum and it never seems to fully charge. It says on the Mac to service battery - which I guess means buy a new battery.
I have had my MacBook for over 5 years now and it does get used probably every day, if not every other. If I brought a new battery would it all work normally again or is it getting old and do I need a new one?
Also, my charger seems to be playing up a bit now as well. It's seems to be temperamental when I plug it in and takes to while to light up and charge. I've attached an image of the battery bit on my laptop as the lead seems to be fine - is this normal?
Thanks in advance guys.Is there any application(s) that your current Mac cannot run that only a new can? Calculate the cost per year of your current MBP and compare that to the cost of a new battery. Spread the battery cost over a year or two of additional operation, how do the dollar amounts compare? If the MBP is functioning properly, I generally find it is more cost effective to keep it.
If the retina display and the SSD storage are very desirable from your perspective, then that becomes a different matter. You are the one to make the final decision.

New Mac Pro should be here Monday, any suggestions?
I should have my new Mac Pro (2.66) should be here Monday, any suggestions?
I will not be migrating directly from old dual 867 anything except some self standing apps, I plan in reloading from original discs or .dmg files, etc.
I will be adding a second Pioneer 111 and a 500gig SATA drive right away...
I will have to suffer with Adobe PS and MS Office 2004 in Rosetta for now
I read reloading the HD from the discs from the factory install is better?
Any other advice to get up and running
TIA
dMy new MacPro is also arriving Monday, but in the alternate universe that's my life. I ordered mine from Amazon.com; so I will need to add more ram to the installed 1G. You may need to do the same, unless you did an Apple Store BTO. If you do need to add ram, remember to get matched pairs, and creating groups of four of the same size chips will give a 10% boost inspeed.
I vaguely remember some issue last fall that was resolved by reinstalling the HD from the discs, but I don't remember the reason for, nor know if it still applies.
Even without migrating, you may want to copy preferences from your previous system, to speed up the look and feel of things in the Finder and elseware—particularly for the apps you're installaing from stratch. One can spend a lot of time simply getting a new machine to match an older one. -
I just followed the directions for transferring my files and applications from my old Macbook, PowerPC G4, to a new iMac super duper something (one day old from the Apple Store).
The new computer said, "You're done transferring, now go and enjoy!" or something like that. I clicked "continue" the screen turned blue for a while. So I turned off the laptop. Then the new computer said that something had been removed incorrectly.
Now, all I see is my old content and appearance from my laptop on the new computer. This does not look like the interface I saw at the store, the one with the applications all nicely lined up on the dock. I basically have my old computer in a new box.
What have I done wrong and how can I get my new computer back?
ThanksYou have your new computer... Migration Assistant just did its job and transferred you user account from your old Mac to the new one. It may look like your old G4, but it will be much faster.
For now, if you want to have the "new computer" look, you can create a new admin user account.
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.5/en/8235.html
Log out and log in to the new account. The new account will use all the default settings, so it should have that +new Mac+ look. You can log out and log in to the other account too (and go back and forth). If you want to use the new account, you can use the /Users/Shared/ folder to manually move your data that got transferred into the new Mac.
You can also set your existing account to have the new look. It would be very easy to change the Desktop background or Dock (or whatever). What specifically do you not like about how it looks (versus how it looks when new )? -
Should I replace my MAC hard drive or buy a new MAC?
Recently, my hard drive crashed. I have been debating whether to replace it, which is the cheapest route to go. Or should I get a new MAC. I've had my MAC since 2008, and am constanly using it. But buying a new MAC is expensive, but I feel it may be the safest route to go to aviod any other problems with my MAC. So, should a just replace the hard drive or buy a new MAC?
It would help to know which one of the different 2008 models of MacBook you have. Is it the White one or the Auminum one?
A new hard drive and maxed out RAM would keep your MacBook running with the new ones for a couple of years. Unless you're doing heavily processor intensive work like high end video editing.
For a hard drive try Newegg.com http://www.newegg.com/Store/SubCategory.aspx?SubCategory=380&name=Laptop-Hard-Dr ives&Order=PRICE
Or OWC http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/hard-drives/2.5-Notebook/
Or for top speed but expensive you could go with an SSD. http://www.newegg.com/Store/SubCategory.aspx?SubCategory=636&name=Internal-SSD&P age=2
And from OWC http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/SSD/2.5

Mac Mini GeekBench score for 2.26, 4GB and 320 HD
I just got my new Mac mini.
People have been asking about "is it worth it to get the upgrades", I won't comment on that as its really a personal perspective thing, but here is the score for my machine (all factory upgrades).
Proc Int Perf: 2483
Proc Float Perf: 4331
Memory Perf: 2448
Memory Bandw: 1840
Geekbench score : 3058
My decision was based on wanting a replacement for my Dual G5 1.8, 3GB Power Mac. This new mac mini is very fast (in my opinion) even with the "slow" 5400 RPM disk. The idea is that I'm waiting for Leopard to come out to replace the Power Mac fully, this Mac Mini will then replace my AppleTV for Media Center using Plex. I wanted as much flexibility so I went 2.26 and 4GB memory. I also think this thing is an incredible piece of art, I couldn't bring myself to crack the case

have a new mac andi want reinstall os but i don't have high internet how can reinstall?
Why do you want to reinstall the OS on a new Mac? That should not be necessary. If you tell us what's wrong that is making you want to do that, we can better advise you.
As to reinstalling the OS, on a Mac with Lion (Mac OS X 10.7.x), you need to either have an internet connection capable of downloading several GB of data or you need to buy the Lion flash drive from the Apple Store.
To save an installer for future re-use, you could try this:
Re: Backup disk for OS 10.7 needed -
Hi,
I bought a new Mac Book Pro a couple of months ago the new model, very high spec, i7 processor, 500g solid state drive, 8 gig of ram. all in all a very fast machine. however, i foolishly downloaded OS X Lion and as soon as i did i noticed a considerable difference in the machine basically its ground to a halt, its now slow glitchy programs shut down and crash. I'm new to Mac and in reminded of life in the world of Windows....! any suggestions should i wipe Lion off the machine and re install Leopard? any help would be appreciated..
LiamSurely you meant to say that there was nothing in Lion you would prefer over !10.6! - Lion is 10.7.
As for what might be sapping your machines juice - have you run Activity Monitor yet? I always enable 'All Processes' and sort it by %CPU usage if i want to know whats cooking.
In addition to the list Disk Activity might give a hint.
If you are quite low on available disk space it might also be that osx is constantly swapping - best to keep a few GB of free space for it to work with. -
and need the new iTunes 11.1 to be able to use my iPhone on iTunes but I need the new mac software update OXS 10.6.8, but my mac doesn't need or have an update what should I do! I'm upset :'(
The requirements for iTunes:
Macintosh System Requirements
Mac computer with an Intel Core processor
OS X version 10.6.8 or later
400MB of available disk space
Broadband Internet connection to use the iTunes Store
Your Mac must be able to run OSX 10.6.8. If you can run that OSX then you can run iTunes 11.1.
Which Mac do you have?

my iMac has crashed...was told I need a new hard drive.....meantime I bought a mac mini.....I had an external drive connected to the mac....and was using time machine for backups....so....how do i move itunes music files to my new mac mini from the external drive?
Turn Time Machine OFF temporarily in its preference pane. Leave the window open.
Navigate in the Finder to your backup disk, and then to the folder named "Backups.backupdb" at the top level of the volume. If you back up over a network, you'll first have to mount the disk image file containing your backups by double-clicking it. Descend into the folder until you see the snapshots, which are represented by folders with a name that begins with the date of the snapshot. Find the one you want to restore from. There's a link named "Latest" representing the most recent snapshot. Use that one, if possible. Otherwise, you'll have to remember the date of the snapshot you choose.
Inside the snapshot folder is a folder hierarchy like the one on the source volume. Find one of the items you can't restore and select it. Open the Info dialog for the selected item. In the Sharing & Permissions section, you may see an entry in the access list that shows "Fetching…" in the Name column. If so, click the lock icon in the lower right corner of the dialog and authenticate. Then delete the "Fetching…" item from the access list. Give yourself read access if you don't already have it. Click the gear icon below the list and select Apply to enclosed items from the popup menu.
Now you should be able either to copy the item in the Finder or to restore it in the time-travel view. If you use the time-travel view, be sure to select the snapshot you just modified. If successful, repeat the operation with the other items you were unable to restore. You can select multiple items in the Finder and open a single Info dialog for all of them by pressing the key combination option-command-I.
When you're done, turn TM back ON and close its preference pane. -
Cannot select a music into slideshow and book slideshow presentations. In the older Mac this was easy. With new Mac OS X 10.6.8 it should work as I can stop the slideshow with cursor but pop up window for choosing music is dead. I cannot drag music into it. Preselected music just goes on.
I am talking about iPhoto. In my old Mac even in Books choosing slideshow gives a pop up where you can select a music from I tunes library. In this new one I can stop the slideshow with cursor and it shows music option but it is, as I said dead. Does not response at all to commands.

I have this on both machines running 10.10.1 OS X and AE 2014. I see on line that others are having this issue. I think it needs a Patch ASAP.
Hello. Basically I can create a new comp that is set to 1920 x 1080, @ 30 frames per second for 1 minute TRT. I create a new solid layer, say red. I hit space bar or play on the screen, and it does not play in real time. ITs on my Imac as well. same OS and Same Version software.
After effects running prerendered @ 17 FPS and fluctuating up to 20 when it should be playing @ real time. After effects 2014 CC , brand new Mac pro strapped 10.10.1

Well, before you hit the panic button, why don't you tell us precisely what you're doing when AE plays at 17fps -- the keys you hit, the buttons you click to begin play.

I Have CC and it's taking so long to install on my new Mac book pro. The CC panel also says its syncing files down at the bottom, it's so slow it looks like it will never finish. Should it be taking this long?
I had an issue where I had to wipe my mac as well. What you have to do to format the hard drive and reinstall is this:
Restart the computer while holding down the option key. Choose the recovery disc. Find the main hard disc and hit format. Then you can reinstall Lion via the internet, it takes a while though, my computer took 5 hours or so.
For your first question, if you got the family version of office, I believe you have 3 computers you can authorize it on. If you are not sure, look it up in the apple store.
For the second: Time machine would probably be your best option, but I would reccomend restoring from a backup before you were having problems, and restore that one (put new files you need on another external or a digital-online storeage site such as dropbox.) To restore a backup, restart your computer and hold command+R and select "Restore from Time Machine Backup" (for more information go here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1427 )
I don't believe tere is anything else you need to do, but I am new to macs, so I may not be the best source, but this is what I have found/have had to do. -
What should I format my wd external hard drive to to use with my new Mac Pro?
What format should my wd external hard drive be in order to use with my new Mac Pro?
If you're going to use it only with Macs, use Mac OS Extended (Journaled). It's the fastest filesystem to use on Macs.
If you're going to use it with PCs and Macs, use exFAT or FAT. I recommend exFAT because it hasn't got limitations as FAT and it's faster, but you need Windows XP Service Pack 3 or later to use it on PCs
