GeForce 4 Ti4600 problem :/

Hi,
2 Days ago i bought the following system:
Asus,A7V333, SocketA, VIA KT333 >2000 Mhz, RAID, Audio&Firewire,Socket A
AMD,Athlon Thoroughbred 2200+ 1.80GHz, Socket A /266 + ThermalTake,SokkelA/P4 478, Volcano 7 cooler
Asus,DVDx16 / CDx48, E616, IDE100
 Microstar,MS-8872 Geforce4 Ti-4600, 128DDR  MB DDR, TV-OUT/VIDEO-IN, retail,AGP
 2,WD,120.0 GB - UDMA/100 - 7200/8096KB,Caviar 1200JB
Surecom,SU-EP-320X-S, 32 Bit PCI Fast Ethernet netcard,10/100 Mbit
Twinmos,1024 MB PC-333 DDR2700
Everything went fine until i installed the drivers to the 8872 and rebooted the pc to finalized the installation. The problem is that i only get to the Windows 98 SE startup screen and then the pc reboots in safe mode. I can use the standard Windows drivers without any  problems. I even updated the bios on the mainboard to 1008 beta 3 on Asus homepage without any luck + i installed latest drivers and tried with several other drivers versions. Still no changes :/
I borrowed Windows 2000 from work and it installed without any problems.
How do i get it to work in Windows 98 SE?
Is there anyone kind out there who can help me?
Regards
Feder

The link appears broken at this time.
As I recall, MS's solutions were:
1) remove some RAM,
2) configure the machine to ignore some RAM, or
3) pay MS for an upgrade.
The much better solution is to fix the problem.  The problem is that the File Cache is configured at boot time as a function of your total system memory.  However, the space for the cache is allocated from a particular section of memory (from which accelerated graphics resources are also allocated).  The MS programmers didn't bother to check that the amount they were trying to allocate would actually fit.
Consequently, the nVidia drivers and the File Cache will fight for limited resources and one will lose.  In neither event can the machine operate.
This link provides additional information on what's going on and why you might want to fix this, even if you aren't having a "too much RAM problem".
http://www.putergeek.com/vcache/index.shtml
Even more information is available at
http://tweakhomepc.virtualave.net/memory/vcache98.html
at which recommendations for particular RAM configurations are made.
And, in case you're wondering, the settings for this Win98SE, 1GB RAM machine are:
[vcache]
MinFileCache=65536
MaxFileCache=131072
ChunkSize=2048
NameCache=4096
DirectoryCache=96
ConservativeSwapFileUsage=1
I also must take umbrage with the recommendation that one should automatically upgrade to Win2k.  If you're like me (and you probably aren't -- I've been a geek far too long), over half the software you use on a regular basis is unable to run under Win2k.  Thus, for my workflow, there's no way to run Win2k.  It's worthless to me.  And, so far, no one's convinced me that giving up half the software I've spent ~10 years getting to know really, really well justifies spending yet even more money for something that is fundamentally the same as what I've got...

  • Okay, here is a GF4 Ti4600 problem for you

My MSI Ti4600 problem has a problem blocking in games. It runs a little blocky in most games, but NFS Porsche is the worst.
I had a LeadTek GF3 w/64 meg RAM in there before that ran great. I really don't know why I wanted to change it... The same games ran great on my GF3, and continue to run great on the same GF3 in my P3 750 machine. Here are my machine specs:
    P4 2.0 GHtz
    768 meg pc800 ram
Western Digital 120 gig 7200 rpm w/8 meg cache
Western Digital 40 gig 7200 rpm
600 watt (yes, 600) power supply
    MSI GF4 Ti4600
    Intel D850EMV2 motherboard
    Aopen 12x DVD
    Samsung 40x12x40 cd-rw
    USB 2.0
    D-Link ethernet card
    Creative Labs Audigy Platinum EX
    Direct X 9
Windows XP home on the 120 gig drive and Red Hat Linux 8.0 on the 40 gig drive.
Also, the case, processor, chipset, hard drives and video card are all liquid cooled. The card is not overclocked and my video settings are set at 800x600. I had Direct X 8.1 in and it still did the same thing. My 3D Mark score is almost identical to the GF3 card at 11,700.
So what gives? Is this video card as cheap as I think it is?

    Okay, problem solved!
I went with the ATI Radeon 9700 Pro, which by the way, uses more power than the GeForce 4 Ti4600, and have not looked back since! Oh yeah, I am using the same power supply too

Be careful about what you call a POS. My guess is that there are less than a dozen power supply manufacturers, as listed on the net. I can assure you that in manufacturing, one company will make the same product and put different names on it for other companies, distributors etc.....
Now a question for deathstalker and wonkaboy:
After about two days of searching the net, magazines, manufacturer's sites and speaking with techs in large and small computer stores, why did I find absolutely no articles or comments about Geforce 4's and power problems?  If they need as much power as YOU say, and most power supplies sold in computers are around the 300 watt flavor( and not all antec), then why are there no articles or complaints about it? Why do the manufacturer's not put XXX watts combined required on the box, in the readme or in the manual? Because it is nowhere near an issue you are making of it.
Seriously, with thousands upon thousands of GeForce 4's sold, and nothing about power problems? Except here, of course.
By the way, I did find one site ( Best Buy I think) that listed some power requirements, they averaged at 300 watt power supply, if it was even listed. Most 300, some 250 and only one 350. All with no combined power recommendation.
If MSI has a need, it is heat sinks for the memory chips and a better gpu heat sink, but like your power supply idea, this is just an opinion.
I should've learned from the MSI mobo I had briefly. It had a nice little habit of supplying power to the KVM switch and optical mouse when it was shut down. I, however, got absolutely no help on the old website with this problem.
Now, after all that, I must thank the two of you for replying to this thread and trying to help me with this problem.
    Thank You!
That is something I am sure you don't hear often on the net, or even in this message board :(

  • MSI Geforce fx5900xt problem

ive made a post about this already but it went un answered
this may be a problem with my computer and not the card
i had my fx5200 hooked up and was playing bf1942 and when i played something weird would happen
to put it in words the screen would beat like  a heart even when i was still i could notice a slight twitch on the screen. I assumed the 5200 was to poor of a card to run bf1942 so i purchased a msi geforce fx5900xt
the other day i was running a benchmark and noticed the 5900 was doing it also
What can cause this problem and how can i fix it?
    please reply thanx

    unclekreepy,
In all honesty, you might need to consider the power supply in your rig,
it might not be adequate, this is one of the major components that’s
overlooked by many builders, home and or professional, when upgrading
    there hardware!
If the PSU is inadequate you will experience, lockups, shutdowns, sudden
or random reboots, BSOD, and numerous other instability issues!
A 300 Watt PSU might not have enough wattage for your rig to be totally
stable, Athlon’s and FX cards are power hungrey!
I would borrow a friend’s higher watt PSU to see if that makes a difference!
PSU are sensitive to heat, an increase in temp equals a decrease in watts!
Always buy a quality named brand PSU like a Antec, Enermax, Fortron,
or the best PC Power & cooling!
This thread by clarkkent57 on “Choosing The Right Power Supply” is
a great place for you to get started, in this thread there is a link to a
PSU wattage calculator, there you will be able to calculate the correct
PSU wattage your rig will use, and remember to add 20% minimum
to 30% more watts onto those figures, and in return, those figures
should  tell you if you have a PSU related issue!

  • Geforce have problem with driver

Sorry i cant find any related to Geforce 3 Ti200, so i use Geforce 4 ti as it topic fronties. Currently i am using Geforce Ti200, after i install ur website driver Nvidia VGA Driver 45.32 for Win2000/XP/Server2003, it just very often keep my pc hang at the time, if i no use this driver, i cant play certain game, do u mind tell me what to do? Why this driver caused a lot of problem to my pc? Is it somekind of bug, can u release new driver to fix it?

No MSI employees work in this forum, this is a user to user help forum only.
As far as the drivers for the Ti-200, there were users reporting problems with later drivers in this forum. If you do a search of the VGA forum, I'm sure you'll find the threads related to this issue.
I suggest going here http://ftp://download1.nvidia.com/Windows/ and try that version instead of MSI drivers. You may not be successful however. I suggest using "Driver Cleaner" found here http://www.driverheaven.net follow the directions supplied with the download and found on the website.
If you are not successfull, then you may have to upgrade your video card.

  • P965 Neo-F and GeForce 7900GS problem

    Hey there,
I have been suffering a lot from my own-built computer, whose configuraions are:
    MSI P965 Neo-F bios 1.60
    C2D E6300 1.86G intel
MSI Geforce 7900GS 256M Video Card
    2x1G Kingston DDR2 667
    Antec 400W PSU
    WD 250G SATA II Hardrive
    1. In windows XP pro, ALL 3D games share the same problem. display flickers, kindda distortion of the 3D model, 2-D Text in the game shakes, unstable,  but game could be going on without freaking out.
    2. In Windows Vista Ultimate, Screen goes black and then a message out " Display driver stopped responding and has been recovered", happens very often. and 3D gaming in Vista is totally a nightmare, screen freezed and computer stopped responding almost every time once I runs 3D games.
Somebody told me it is overheated of my system, so I added two fans. The temperatures of CPU and GPU are normally around 30C and 50C which should be fine, I guess. However, problems still kicking my ass.
Is my PSU 400W Antec powerful enough? the minimum requirement of Video Card is 400W.
Would you guys please help me?? I was driven crazy by this unstable issues.

thanks for all your guys' replies.
So far, I have tested 3 Video cards and same problem, so it is not the video card.
I changed 2 PSUs, same problem.
I have tried to cool down the system by all means, and I believe it is not overheated.
I tested two RAM sticks individually, and found that if I used only one of them, no problem.
Therefore, I would say, one memory stick is defective and is repsonsible for the unstablity.

  • Major GeForce4:ti4600 problem

Hey everyone, I just bought the MSI Geforce4:ti4600 "champion Edition" video card and i have a huge problem. I uninstalled the drivers from the old video card i was using. and shutdown to install the new card. i installed it and boot up. when i got to the windows 2k screen i get alot of nasty artifact blocks with static going through some of them. i've read through a few threads about this problem but no one seemed to know the answer to the problem.
after i installed the drivers i figured it would be fine after that. was i wrong. it still gave me the same nasty blocks everywhere and it would not even go past the windows 2k start up screen. it would just give me a blue screen of death very quickly and restart. i looked in the BIOS to see if everything was fine and it was. here are my system specs: Abit KG7 mobo

  • 2009 iMac 24" GeForce 120 problems after 10.6.7 upgrade

    Hi all,
I've read a lot of threads about iMac graphic problems on these boards, but I haven't really found anything here that sounds like my problem.
Several weeks ago, I upgraded my early 2009 iMac to 10.6.7. Up until this point, I have had zero problems with this machine.  However, since the upgrade, I have had multiple hard freezes each week, especially when watching videos on Netflix streaming.  I upgraded flash to the most recent version, but have since started having problems while using only core programs (Safari while browsing Facebook, listening to music in iTunes).
It starts with several blocks (maybe 100px by 50px, in a "Tetris" pattern) on the screen that display text from another portion of the screen. They are not static distortions. When I scroll the page, text and UI chrome will show up in this blocky "mirror" of another part of the screen.  When I command-tab to another program, the defects disappear, but then return when I switch back.  At certain points, the screen begins to flash, and flicker with half of the screen going black.  While this happens, I can move the cursor with the mouse, but cannot click on anything.  I am able to ssh into the iMac while it's having one of it's seizures and run programs (top, ps, grep, tail, shutdown, etc.) from the command line without problems.
So, do you all think that this is a hardware failure (bad graphics or logic board) or _hopefully_ just a driver problem? Unfortunately my AppleCare has expired :-(
    Thanks for your input.
Edit -- I have not had any kernel panics (or atleast the kernel panic "Please restart" page), but I do find this repeated in the console
    Jun  6 16:17:53 max kernel[0]: NVDA(OpenGL): Channel exception! exception type = 0x6 = Fifo: Parse Error

Try run Apple Hardware Test on your system, also run disk utility on your hard drive to repair it, repair permission too.  http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1509     http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1417

  • Quad G5 with Dual 23's and GeForce 6600 problems

I bought this set up to take over as my main Photoshop station. I'm getting a few weird things though:
    1. A ghost curser sits on the opposite monitor that I'm working on near the gutter of the two in the middle, very distracting.
    2. when I'm working on two images in full screen mode in Photoshop and I attempt to move around in the images the screen does not refresh.
Now I wouldn't worry too much if I felt I was pushing an older system but since this is brand new and just how Apple configures it on the site, I'm a little disappointed.
Any ideas? Should I have to upgrade my 6600?

The problem seems to exist only only my "a" monitor (primary), when I try to reproduce the circumstances on the "b" monitor it works fine. So I tried the following:
    1. Flipped the monitors a>b and b>a and the problem is still only on the "a" monitor.
    2. Changed the resolution to 1600x1000, no change in the problem and also flipped the monitors with this resolution setting, no change.
    3. Created new user and problem still exists with the new user.
Do I have a problem with my new "a" 23 Cinema Display or is this 6600 card not enough to push it? It was the card that is configured from Apple for this system.
    I'm frustrated.

  • K7N2G Geforce resolution problem

Hi, I looked around the forum but couldn't find anybody with exactly the same problem so...
I've got the K7n2G with onboard Geforce4. For some reason, I can't get it to display a resolution of higher than 800x600 using 32-bit colour. In fact, if I go into the NVidia tab that's in the Control Panel->Display menu, it doesn't even give me the option of choosing 32-bit colour at all! This is clearly wrong. Does anyone have any ideas/advice? BTW, I'm using the correct .inf file for the monitor and the monitor does support 32-bit colours at high resolution so that isn't the problem.
    Thanks in advance.

sounds like you have only 1x dimm
get a matching second in dual channel, one of them in slot 3
then you will get more options
and twice the vga performance as well

i have disabled the onboard GFX chipset in the BIOS but when i reboot
it attemps to use the onboard video chips.
if i then reset during boot because the monitor is blank it will then
boot using the AGP card correctly.
this also happens when you first turn the PC on in the morning.
also i did not format the PC after installing the new components and
did have the BIOS tell me i had a bad IDE cable and i did suffer some

however, the AGP and onboard issus is not sorted.
it alternates between using the onboard GFX and the AGP card  8o
it is as simple as this time it tries AGP reboot and it uses onboard reboot and its back to AGP  8o
what i have to do is reboot and then CTRL-ALT-DEL - if i hear it accessing the floppy but have no monitor signal - then when it restarts its on AGP  8o
it is turned to AGP in BIOS is there anything else that i can set?

I just bought a new HP Pavilion 15-p050sq with Windows8.1Pro and after one day I realized the NVIDIA GeForce 830M graphics procesor is not used at all. Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome. I have looked into your issue about your HP Pavilion 15-p050sq Notebook and your NVIDIA GeForce 830m issues. Here is a document  that might help you. It is a different system but the Graphics are the same. If you notice the section on managing your updates as there is a section there to uncheck the Auto
Windows will  always use the Intel GPU . The NVIDIA card is only utilized when configured specifically to run an application or when the notebook requires extra graphics processing power. Some settings may not be available for a software program. If a setting is not available, the NVIDIA Optimus technology does not support the software program for that setting.
Here is a Youtube Video that might help you as well.

wow - this is my story also... I have been up and down the street with my MSI 6800GTs (in SLi) and they do not OC worth a damn... I am pretty bummed out due to the money, time, blood, sweat, and tears I have shovled into this rig and I only get stock...  essentially... I have tried all the OC'ing utilities, different power supplies, volt modding... and I think it's got to be some bios setting or maybe the one piece GPU memory cooler design... the GPU and memory both heating this thing... I don't think it works that well... honestly... I have been around the net, on many forums... and the only peeps who have /any/ luck with OC'ing these MSI 6800GTs are water cooled... anyways... I have spent soooo much time on this and for that reason alone I doubt I will be buying MSI products in the future, but I would still like to find a solution which allows me to push my $900 worth of video cards to ultra speeds.   I am really considering going with water cooling... but I really don't want to deal with the hassles of it right now... what I would really like to find or buy are some 6800 Ultras reference design coolers to install on my GTs... I think a lot of this inabillty to OC well is heat related... I know I can get 10mhz more out of my cards when my room is cool....  I have a LOT of air on these cards... and good ventilation... I have my system stats in another post on this forum entitled "nx6800GT OC issues in SLi" or something like that.  Good luck man, and I will let you know if I find a solution for this.

    eXPerience,
Btw, a GeForce4 Ti4600 with 8X is a GeForce4 Ti4800. So your drivers are detecting the card correctly.
Do not worry about the Temp, it is withing normal operating limits for that card.
