[GeForce 6] Geforce 6800 128MB - Computer won't boot with add. power cable conne

I've had my computer set up in it's current configuration for about a year now except that I've recently replaced (RMA) my motherboard and it's been working solidly for the past two weeks.  I was playing a game yesterday, hit <Escape> to go to options and then my computer shut off.  After unplugging everything from the motherboard, I have found out that the computer won't turn back on if I have the additional power cable attached to the video card.  If I have the power cable attached to the video card, the computer will turn on for about a second, and turn off.  The power LED won't stay on, the CPU fan won't turn, even the power supply fan won't turn.  When I detach the power cable from the video card, my computer will power on, but I get a horrible screech (which I assume is the video card warning that the necessary power cable isn't attached).  In this case, all fans on the system start turning, even the video card fan.  So, I turn off the computer within a few seconds to make sure I don't damage anything.  I have tried using different power connectors from the power supply to the video card to make sure it wasn't just one particular power cable.
My question is: Is the video card at fault, or my power supply?
I'm hesitant to test the video card on the only other system available to me (My girlfriend's 5 year old Gateway with a 200W power supply [+12V 6A Max] which I'm using to post this thread) for fear of damaging it.  And unfortunately, the video card in my girlfriend's computer is of a way older AGP style which won't fit into my motherboard (for testing).

Glenn,
I cleared the CMOS, as suggested, and nothing has changed from my previous post.  I'm trying to figure out if the video card is now drawing too much power from the power supply, indicating something went wrong with the video card or if something went wrong with the power supply in that it now can't handle the power being drawn from the video card.  I disconnect all my hard/optical drives power connections, so that the power supply is powering only the motherboard and video card and it's the same story.
NEXT DAY UPDATE:
I bought a SmartPower 2.0 350W Antec power supply from Circuit City to test my situation further.  I get the same problems even with the new power supply, so I'm certain that the video card is drawing too much power from the Molex power connector.  Time to RMA MSI ASAP.  If anyone has any suggestions please feel free to comment on this thread.

  • HP Pavilion P7-1141 Computer won't boot with 2nd SATA drive installed

I'm having a problem booting brand new computer when a second SATA hard drive ws installed into P7-1141
Took a working SATA drive from my other computer and installed it into this new computer.  But computer only hangs on startup screen after the animated logo draws...then sits there doing nothing..
    My configuration:
HD 1 (boot drive, original that came with computer) plugged into SATA1
HD2 (second SATA drive) plugged into SATA2
DVD drive (original) plugged into SATA3
Will boot if I unplug SATA cable, but won't if it's plugged in..
To make sure I didn't break anything, I put the SATA drive back into original computer with the same power cable and SATA cable and it works.  That is, it shows up as a second hard drive on my old computer.
    Any ideas?

    Product number is : QX351AA3ABA

    Model # P7-1141
Ok.  I've done a little research and right or wrong, I'm following a suggestion to re-format the drive before I attach it.  Reason:  Someone posted that if you had a Windows XP or Vista formatted HD, that it will need to be re-formatted before being installed into a Windows 7 OS.  Maybe right, maybe wrong...but I'm going to try anyways.  Will keep posted.
Also, looked at my Event Log Errors and found this in the entry:
The device, \Device\Harddisk6\DR6, is not ready for access yet.
Not sure what this means yet..but working on it.  If anyone knows off-hand, i would like to solve this.
Anyways, I'm re-formatting the disk now and will try it again.  I have my doubts, because why wouldn't an NTFS formatted drive show up with any operating system?  Maybe there's an obvious answer, but that's why I'm here!
    Other comments:
I checked for latest SATA driver and must have it..at least according to this HP site since it only lists the 'original', so I assume it's there's only one released for this MB and that I must have the  latest and greatest.
There are many other posts on Windows 7 hanging on "Starting Windows'..and the above is what I pulled from them...haven't found 'the' solution posted yet....
    Thanks!

  • Computer won't boot with R9 270X Hawk installed.

It ran ok with a previous Hawk card, but that failed after 6 months and the problem I have is with the replacement supplied under warranty. The computer will not boot at all with the card installed. It runs fine with an ATI Radeon HD6450 in the PCI-e slot. The replacement card was returned to the supplier who checked it and says it works correctly. I haven’t got a spare PC to check myself.
The fans run and 8 blue leds light up but there is no output. I have checked there is 12v at the power connectors under load.
The PC is a Dell Inspiron 620, BIOS version A10 .
    4g memory
Apologies if there is already a solution here somewhere- I have looked.

    Thanks for your reply.
The pc is Dell Inspiron 620, cpu Intel i5-2320 3 GHz 4 core.
    4GB memory.
PSU is 650 watt Be Quiet BN210 Power Zone
If you need other details, please let me know which.
The card has been tried by the supplier (Scan Computers) and pronounced ok and I’ve no reason to doubt that, but I have no suitable PC here to try it in. It’s worth bearing in mind that exactly the same type of card ran ok for 7 months in this pc.

  • Computer won't boot with PCI-GPIB card installed

I'm running a windows XP system with Labview 7.1 installed. I have installed the GPIB drivers, but when I insert my PCI-GPIB card, the computer will not boot(it freezes before the POST). I'm running a Shuttle "MK40VN" KM400 Chipset Motherboard.

Well, nevermind, I just verified that the card is in fact fried.

  • Computer won't boot if the GTX 970 is plugged in

    Hello everyone,
I just recently bought and assembled a new computer, however, the computer won't boot when the gpu is plugged in.
The motherboard I got is a MSI Z97I Gaming AC and the GPU is a MSI GeForce GTX 970.
When the GPU isn't plugged in the mobo, everything boots up fine and I was able to check with the bios that every other elements of the computer where recognized fine. When I plug in the GPU however, the system won't boot. The fans of the case, the mobo AND the GPU's are working and the GPU's leds also on, so it shouldn't be a PSU issue (I use a 750W PSU so that should cover it). However, no boot at all.
I don't really feel like trying to plug the GPU in another computer if it's just some compatibility issue or whatnot that you may be aware of. Maybe the bios doesn't recognise it ? The version is e7920IMS V1.0, I wasn't really able to find any kind of information regarding the latest versions online.
    Thank you,
    Yann

  • Computer won't boot up after installing SIIG card

    Hey Everyone,
I having problems with my SIIG FireWire 2-Port PCIe DV card that I've installed into my PowerMac G5 Quad. With the card installed the computer will not boot up, which is the same thing that happened with my previous two models of the card. I installed a new card yesterday and it worked fine all day, but after shutting the computer down for the night and then restarting it in the morning I am experiencing the same problems. The light on the front of the computer turns on, but the screen does not, and after about a minute a loud fan noise comes one. I have the card installed in Slot 2. In Slot 1 I have a ProTools HD card and in Slot 3 I have an AJA Kona LHE card. Even with all of the cards removed the computer still does not boot up. Anyone seen this problem before? Any help or information anybody can offer would be greatly appreciated.
    PowerMac G5 Quad   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Hi, I had the same problem with my dual core G5.
I installed the card and my computer won't boot up. The screen stays gray and the fan keeps spinning.
I contacted SIIG and they said the card is defective, which, I doubt it is.
I then returned it for a refund.

  • Deskjet Advantage 3540 (Envy 4500): Computer won't connect with printer during software installation

I just bought this printer and I am trying to install it by using the HP installation CD but I am running into difficulties to complete the process. The problem is that the computer won't connect with the printer (but my printer connects fine with my Wi-Fi network) and installation does not complete.
The HP software installation process appears to go  normally (at least no error messages are shown) but when it gets to the part where it asks me how I would like to connect to the printer (Wireless or USB cable) I get an error message when I select Wireless Mode. My printer appears listed but as soon as I select it, a dialog is shown stating that "network installation could not be performed".
Below are the dialogs and what happens (text is in portuguese but you get the idea)
Dialog 1: selecting wireless connection mode
Dialog 2: printer appears in list and I select it
Dialog 3: Error message is shown, no further details
    Here are some more facts:
    (1) Printer connect fines with my Wi-Fi network: the connection details are correctly shown in its display (Wi-Fi SSID and IP 192.168.0.6) ;
    (2) If I go to a web browser in my computer and type in the IP address, I can access the printer's webpage fine;
    (3) I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling HP software;
    (4) I've resetted my router;
    (5) I've executed "HP Print and Scan Doctor" utility and it states my software hasn't been installed (which I don't understand) and it tries to download HP software and install one more time and I get to the error.
    (6) If I go to "Start" menu, I can see the HP group is empty (installation only creates icons on my desktop). See picture below:
My OS is Windows 7 64 bit Ultimate (Service Pack 1)
EDIT: I've just discovered the inkjet Advantage 3540 and Envy 4500 appear to be the same printer, each target to a different market.
Help is much appreciated as I tried a lot of things to make this printer work wirelessly with my computer but without success.
    Thank you,

  • Computer won't boot after installing MFP M127FW

My computer won't boot to my hard drive after installing my new MFP M127FW printer unless I first unplug the USB cable from the printer and then turn on the computer.  My BIOS is set to boot from my hard drive, not from a USB drive, so what did the installation of the MFP M127FW drivers and software do to my computer?  I assume this has something to do with the Smart Install feature.
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

    Hi @frcraig ,
I see that you are experiencing issues with the computer booting up when the printer is connected by the USB cable.
I would like to help you out with this issue today.
Most likely it is the Smart Install on the printer causing this. The printer looks like a disk drive.
On the printer, touch Setup, Service, Smart Install and turn it off.
If you are still having issues, in the system BIOS, disable the Boot from USB device option and the USB Legacy Support option. Doing this will allow the PC to complete the boot process to the internal hard drive and allow you to enter Windows. If this does not work for any reason, you should boot your PC before connecting the USB drive. Once the computer is fully booted into Windows, connect the USB drive and wait for the operating system to detect the drive.
Important: Do not disable the USB Legacy Support if you are using a USB Keyboard. Doing so will prevent you from being able to use the keyboard during the booting sequence.
What kind of computer do you have?
If you need further assistance, just let me know.
    Have a great day!

  • If usb is plugged the computer won't boot

Hi there. I have recently started to experience a new type of problem. I have two usb hdds connected to a usb hub. I've never had any problems with it(the hub). After I installed the last update 10.7.3 everytime I restart my computer if I have the hub (with all my hdds and other devices) connected to my computer, the computer won't boot. It get up to the white screen (before the loading wheel). If I unplug the usb cable it starts booting inmediately.
The funny thing is I didn't change anything lately. It started to do this yesterday.
    Thanks

Is the hub powered? If not that is probably your problem. The hd's are sucking power but can't get enough to power up and that is probably stopping the MBP from booting.

  • MacBook Pro won't boot with new hard drive, but a different MacBook Pro will

So here are the details. My friend and I both have 13-inch Mid 2010 MacBook Pro's. Same processor and specs since they were purchased at the same time, but originally had 250 GB hard drives. His hard drive failed and needed a new one. Put a 500 GB Seagate Momentus 5400.6 in his computer, and tried using a flash drive with "Install OS X Mavericks" on it to install Mavericks on his new hard drive. No matter what, it wouldn't install. I finally was able to install OS X 10.9.4 on it by connecting the new hard drive to my computer with a USB hard drive enclosure. I put the hard drive back inside his computer and it wouldn't boot (stuck on the gray screen with apple logo and a spinning wheel). I then attached to the hard drive to his computer externally with the USB enclosure, and then it booted and worked perfectly.
So, it seemed like the problem was with something inside his computer, but then I switched our drives, and that doesn't seem to be the case anymore. I put my original hard drive into his computer, and his new hard drive into my computer, and they both booted and worked perfectly, so I have no idea why his computer will not boot with the new hard drive internally.
To summarize, his computer boots with: 1) new hard drive connected externally (won't work if it's internal), and 2) my hard drive internally
but my computer boots with: 1) new hard drive connected externally AND internally, and 2) my hard drive internally.
Both hard drives have OS X 10.9.4 installed
If anyone has any idea what's causing this and how to make his computer work with the new hard drive internally that would be greatly appreciated.

So after switching the internal SATA cables from each computer, now we have
His computer, with my SATA cable:
    1) Worked with every hard drive!
My computer, with his SATA cable:
    1) Works with 1 TB Toshiba hard drive
    2) Works with 500 GB Seagate hard drive
    3) Works with my original hard drive
    4) Flashing folder with question mark with his old hard drive
So it turns out you were right! Definitely had something to do with the SATA cables. But it's still strange that mine was able to boot with all the hard drives except the one that was originally in his. So it seems like it was some combination of his SATA cable and something else, since when his SATA cable was in his computer only 1 hard drive (my original) worked, and when it was in my computer, 3 hard drives worked. But at least its working, and I'm just gonna keep our SATA cables switched since that seems to work out fine

  • Macbook pro won't boot with two new 4GB RAM sticks.

I have a mid 2010 Macbook Pro. It came with two 2GB RAM sticks. After downloading Lion, my computer started to get sluggish so I thought I would upgrade the ram. I bought two 4GB Corsair RAM sticks and tried to install them. My computer will boot up if I install one of the new 4GB sticks and leave an old 2GB stick; but it won't boot with both of the new 4GB sticks. Any ideas?
