Geforce GTX 550ti 1GB or GTX 460 1GB or other?

I have a 2 year old homebuilt i7 920 with 12GB ram built on an Asus P6T MB with a Seasonic 650W PS.  I'd like to upgrade the current Graphics card that was fine for Photoshop but not for Premiere Pro which I'm just experimenting with. I'd like to get a better card for it without going crazy because this will not be my main computer.  I never OC'd it either as for Photoshop it seemed fine at the time.
It will be used typically for making under 5 min videos that consist of a around half doz clips each from my Canon 1DM4 in HD 1080.  Not too much in the way of effects currently with unsharp mask, color correction and transitions etc.
The ones I've sort of narrowed down to are the GTX 460 1GB or maybe the GTX 550ti 1 GB might do as well for this use?  I don't like limiting myself if I'd see much of a difference between them.  I'm also totally open to any suggestions for others as well.
As a side note, I'm also in the planning stages for building a new computer from scratch and that will be my main computer that I'll most likely put a better card in during the coming month or two.
While I've built several computers over the years I'm finding this graphics card choice bewildering to say the least!  I hope that's enough info to go on and I greatly appreciate any help as most review sites for cards pertain mostly to gaming.
Thanks in advance,
Jim

I don't know the power needs of my GTX 285 (in a file somewhere) but I wasn't worried 'cause I have an 850 power supply
I do know that the card has 2 power connections... I presume one for the GPU and the other for the onboard fan
Before you think your PS will work... check your total requirments

Also Eyefinity is AMD feature, Nvidia cards doesn't have such.

And yes, SLI isn't possible as Bas mention.
To run SLI you need latest MSI's AMD platform board for AM3+, named 990FXA-GD80:

  • GTX 460 1GB CUDA support in CS5.5?

I've read the list of supported CUDA boards for CS5, but does this mean that the GTX 460 1GB boards will never have support in CS5.5?

Think what could be done with 2, 3, or 4 GPUs.
Hey, no one else at this point even has one.  So we Premiere Pro users are lucky in that regard.
Personally, I still think the move away from the proprietary CUDA are towards OpenCL is more important than adding SLI  That opens up ATI cards as well.  And for the money, ATI cards often have double or triple the number of stream processors over nVidia's cores.  That can mean significantly better performance out of ATI cards for the same or less money.

    I have a 2008 mac book....with 1GB 667hz DDR2 RAM 1GB each....I want to upgrade it with DDR3 Rams 2GB each, it is possible?

No, the two RAM types are different, and the architecture has to specifically be able to interface with it. You can upgrade to 2x2GB of DDR2 memory, for a total of 4GB.

  • What is the performance gain on MBP (1) 1GB SODIMM vs (2) 1GB SODIMMS

I just added a second 1 GB SODIMM to my 1 GB MacBook Pro (for a total of 2 GB of ram), but I am not sure that I gained any performance.
I ran several benchmarks (XBench 1.2, CineBench 9.5, and GeekBench) but I only detected a small change in performance with (2) 1GB modules vs (1) 1GB module. With CineBench no difference was detected.
Is there a special firmware update that will enable additional performance (i.e. Dual Channel support) with (2) matched SODIMMs installed?
What program will best show the performance increase?
How much of a performance increase is expected?
MacBook Pro 2.0GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   Upgrade 1 GB to 2 GB of ram

Matching or paired RAM modules will provide about a 3-5 percent improvement in RAM based operations. Graphic operations may show little or no improvement because operations are performed in VRAM rather than core RAM.

  • Dead GeForce GTX 460 1GB OC

    Hello,
When I started my computer today, the screen was blank. I thought it's something with graphics card, so I tried connecting screen to my on-board video card. Desktop showed up. I also tried putting card into other computer = same story, screen is blank. I assume the card somehow died. I bought it in the USA but I'm using it in Poland right now and there's no way I could ship it to USA and RMA it.
Is there any way I could RMA it in Europe/Poland? Or the warranty isn't worldwide?
    Thanks for useful replies.
    /Matt

The warranty isn't worldwide, since you purchase it in US you can't RMA it in Europe

  • MSI GTX 460 1Gb questions

what's the recommended or lowest settings for this cards fan speed at idle? and would it affect the auto control when the card's temperature rises.
also I've read an article on how to overclock it but it only mentions roughly how high the core clock can go(825MHz). if i were to increase the shader and memory, how would i approach this or should i?
haven't tampered with a graphic card before so any additional help/info would be appreciate.

There's a minimum fan speed in place already if you check in Afterburner. I'd suggest you just leave it to adjust the speed accordingly.
Overclocking varies on each card. You need to test it youself to find the limit, though be careful you don't push it too far or you may break something. Afterburner is a good tool to use for overclocking the graphics card.

I also read this in another topic:

    Hi there,
I've been using a GTX560 Ti TF II/OC for a while now, which has been working perfectly fine - even with moderate OC from 880 -> 930, etc.
    I've now purchased and installed a new, 2nd card (exact same model) in SLI. The boxes are identical, and the bar code labels on the box and the card both state that it is indeed the exact same model. However, a couple of details are slightly confusing and concerning;
    1. It appears to have an additional, black clamp, securing the heat sink to the PCB, which my old one doesn't have.
    2. In Afterburner it appears just as "MSI GTX560 Ti" as opposed to "MSI GTX560 Ti TF II/OC" like my other one.
    3. It runs quite a lot hotter, idle or load. As the top card it hits almost 100C in benchmarks. As the bottom card it hits 80C. Whilst the old card (#1), runs roughly 10C cooler, in both idle and load.
When I checked in GPU-Z, they were identical except for the VBIOS versions:
#1 (old card) was on 70.24.11.00.02.
    #2 (new card) was/is on 70.24.2E.00.2.
So I searched and saw this thread and decided to use nVflash to flash them both. So I did all the preliminary checks, backed the originals up, etc. but although nvflash detects both cards, it seems that only #1 (old card) matches this BIOS, so I proceeded to flash it without issues. I then removed #1 from my system (physically), put #2 in its PCI-E slot, and ran nVflash again, but it still doesn't think it's eligible.
I'm guessing this is down to being different revisions or similar. I think the old one, #1, has a GUID of 2382 1462, whilst #2 (new card) is 2385 1462. Can anyone point me in the direction of the latest BIOS that will work for my new card?
And I have the same heating issue as discribed by T4Sc. Maybe there is an issue with these cards since the have the same GUID and Bios as my 2nd card.
Can a new bios fix this?
    Thanks in advance!

    Ok thanks!
For flashing I am assuming to use the nvflash-tool and change te extention to '.rom'?

  • GTX 285 GB 512 DDR3 vs gtx 550ti

Quick q: Which one will work better in premire pro cs6

Actually, Bill, the OP meant "512-bit DDR3" for the GTX 285. There have never been any GTX 285 cards with only 512MB of RAM. Most GTX 285 cards came with 1GB of RAM, while a few offered 2GB.
In this case, between 1GB versions of those two GPUs, definitely the GTX 285: You did a test with both of those CPUs some time ago with CS5.5 and an i7-2600K overclocked to 4.4GHz with 16GB of RAM. The biggest difference is in the MPEG-2 DVD test of the PPBM5 benchmark: The GTX 285 completed this portion of the test in 117 seconds while the GTX 550 Ti needed all of 146 seconds. This is in large part due to the higher 159 GB/s bandwidth of the GTX 285's 512-bit DDR3 memory compared to only 98.4 GB/s for the 192-bit DDR5 memory on the GTX 550 Ti. However, both of those GPUs have fewer than 384 CUDA cores (240 for the GTX 285, 192 for the GTX 550 Ti), so expect both of those GPUs to be the bottleneck in faster PCs.

You have a great system, but it really depends on what you are editing and what output format is being used.  If you use a lot of MPE accelerated effects and features and down size (like HD to DVD) and/or change frame rates it probably might pay to go with the much more expensive GTX 780 Ti.  If exporting time is not of essence go with the GTX 770.
If you have a lot of high resolution (higher than HD) frames then the 3 GB board may be better for you.

  • Gtx 550ti MSI 1024mb "no video input" issue

    Hello,
Since I've got my gtx 550 I am really happy with it, but since a few weeks the video card acts strange. I moved 2 weeks ago to another room in our house, and since then its acting strange. When I start up my pc, my display says: no video input. Then it goes into sleep mode. I was using a VGA cable, tried a different one. It worked!
But not for long, the day after I got the same problem. So I went out and bought and DVI cable. It worked also for 2 days and now I have the same problem. I tried 2 different monitors, both say the same thing, even my TV.
Today I put my old graphics card in my pc and it just worked normally. Im very confused...
Does anyone know a way to fix this?
Sorry for the grammar, I'm typing this on my mobile.
    Thanks in advance!

    What is that?
Please list your detailed specs. What should the info on the cooler help us to assist you? Better add the cpu used.
That means nothing. What 650w psu is it? Specs? Model?
Im sorry, but I cant boot up my pc normally. I dont know exactly what build, but it worked perfect. 1 year ago I bought the graphics card and built it in. Nothing else changed since then, I think it has something to do with the graphics card. But Ill try to get more information about my pc

  • Is it posible to unlock GTX 545 DDR5 to GTX 550TI DDR5?

Hi everybody! I had bought this card:
So, how you can see, memory bridge is only 128, rops are 16 and shaders are 144, instead 192/24/192.
I have an idea to burn my card with original bios from msi.com/product/vga/N550GTX-Ti-M2D1GD5.html .
    I have some questions:
    1) Does it have hardware lock? Could i flash another bios?
    2) Does anybody did it?
    3) Any suggestions?

No, that is impossible. Also as I said in your other thread (https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=165928) you card is an OEM model that is not covered by support here. This forum is only for retail components.

Just have a quick question... I have the MSI GTX 770 TF/4 gig card and I am thinking about getting another.. If I get a 2 gig card, can I run it with the 4 gig in SLI mode? Thanks in advance for any help...

No, you can't! It is impossible to SLI cards of different vram sizes as Nvidia doesn't allow such setups. You will not even be able to enable SLI.
    Quote from: https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/469402/sli/faq-quot-will-these-two-cards-work-in-sli-quot-sli-what-works-with-what-/
    - All GPUs must have the same amount of VRAM and an identical Bus Width
    -- You cannot use a "2GB" version with a "4GB" version or "3GB" version with a "6GB" version in SLI or a 1GB 192 bit bus with a 1GB 256 bit bus Etc.
Note: It used to be possible to enable SLI on cards with differing VRAM but this is no longer available.
