Gen 4 iPod touch will not come back to life from recovery mode. Plus: going to Apple store, in Japan?

Hi everybody,
I know this is probably a commonly asked question, but I've been looking through other threads and haven't found anything that works so far.
iPod touch died a while ago and gave me the "restore me" screen. (Showing a USB cord plugging into Itunes). But, when I try to restore it won't let me.
I'm running a MacBook 5,1 with OS X 10.6.8 installed. My iPod touch is 32 GB, model Model A1367, 4th Generation.
I know it's old but if there's a chance at resurrecting, I want to give the old guy a chance.
When I click "restore."
Itunes says that it's "extracting software," then starts switching between "verifying ipod restore with apple" and "preparing ipod for restore." The Ipod itself displays an apple with a progress bar.
Then it says "the ipod could not be restored, an unknown error occurred (40)"
I've tried a different internet connection and switching USB ports.
I also edited the "hosts file" as follows:
# 17.151.36.30 gs.apple.com
I added this line, but I don't understand the hosts file very well. For example: no idea what the hashtag is for?
Let's see…I don't have any security software to speak of. I updated iTunes after I finally got 10.6.8 installed.
Also: I live in Japan! Japanese is not much of a problem, but I'm unsure of how much support I can get for an elderly American model. Is it difficult for an Apple stores to work with products that came from overseas, or is there that not much of a difference?
Thank you!!

Try to restore your iOS device two more times while connected with a cable, computer, and network you know are good. Also, confirm your security software and settings are allowing communication between your device and update servers. If you still see the error message when you update or restore, contact Apple support.
The later means, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

  • 4th gen ipod touch will not come up on Itunes

I have a 32gb 4th generation ipod touch and whenever i connect it to itunes it says this ipod cannot be used because the Apple Mobile Device service is not started. I don't know what this means and i cannot sync my ipod anymore.

Type " Apple Mobile Device service" into the search bar at the top of this screen next to "Support" and see if the resulting articles help.

  • My 4th Gen Ipod touch will not get past the apple logo

My 4th Gen Ipod touch will not get past the apple logo (unless the battery is dead, Then it tell me to charge it).  Once it gave me the connect to itunes screen.  I clicked restore in itunes but the ipod went back to the apple logo before the update download finished. I tried calling apple but my over the phone technical support just expired. PLEASE HELP!

This can be a corrupted software/firmware on your iPod touch. If the recovery mode you did was not forced, then try to force it into recovery mode. This is how:
    1. Force it to shut down (note: this sort of shut down should not be preformed unless you are in a situation like this because it is a hardware shutdown and will not attempt to unload software, save unsaved files, safely stop system processes, etc.) to do this, hold down the power/sleep button and home button for about 7 or 10 secs. Also I might be incorrect but I heard that you can just hold down the sleep and home button until the screen goes blank and then immediately let go.
    2. Have iTunes running. Hold down the home button and plug the USB cable that came with your iPod into it. Keep on holding on the home button until a picture of a USB cable going into the iTunes logo appears. You are now in a forced recovery mode. (In case your not so tech-savvy forced recovery is the same as a normal recovery mode that an iPod might do if it knows an update or restore failed.)
    3. iTunes should have shown a pop-up message about it found a iPod in recovery mode. Click OK, click your iPod from the sidebar and click restore. The iPod will show the apple logo for a while and iTunes will say "preparing iPod for restore" and then "waiting for iPod" this was the longest part of updates for me.
    4. iPod will reboot when restore is completed. When I update my iPod it one time showed the apple logo for one whole sync until it showed the slide to unlock screen, so do not worry. P.S if that does not work do a DFU mode restore ( I've been told DFU mode stands for device firmware update mode) I'm running out of room, so google it. Hope this helped ;)

  • My iPod touch will not come on just a black screen

my ipod touch will not turn on,

Make sure the device is plugged in to the charger for at least 10 minutes before trying to power on. If that doesnt work try a hard reset on the device, hold in the home button and the power button until the Apple shows on the screen.
    Thanks

  • My 4th gen ipod touch will not work in a philips or Sony docking station

I bought a philips(DC320) clock radio and my ipod touch would not work in it.  Thinking it was a problem with the connector on the radio I returned it and bought a Sony ICF-CS15ip because the store was out of the philips radio.  When I plugged my 4th gen ipod touch into that again my Ipod touch would not play through the radio but the radio would recognize and charge the ipod.  I tried my daughter's 2nd gen ipod touch in the Sony and it worked great.  So It looks like there is a problem with the my ipod.  Sony claims that the ICF-CS15ip is compatible with the 4th gen ipod touch and I have the latest IOS 5.1.1 on my ipod.  Any suggestions before I go to the Apple store?  The Ipod is only 6 months old.

You can try the standard fixes:
    - Reset. Nothing is lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory defaults/new iPOd.
That has worked for some users.
However, sometimes an iOS update will break compatibility. In that case yo have to wait for either Apple or the dock manufacturer to issue a firmware update.

  • HT1430 My 4th Gen iPod touch will not turn, doesnt charge, and i can't reset in computer because it says it is protected by a passcode, but i cant enter pass code because the screen stays black and won't even light up... What do I do

My 4th gen iPod Touch has had a blank screen for about 3-4 weeks now, it will not turn on, sync, or charge. iTunes recognizes its plugged up, but i cant reset it because it says its passcode protected, but i cant enter passcode due to screen not lighting up or working. How do i fix this?

Place the iOS device in Recovery Mode and then connect to your computer and restore via iTunes. The iPod will be erased.
iOS: Wrong passcode results in red disabled screen
If recovery mode does not work try DFU mode.

  • First Gen iPod Touch will not update to 2.2

Hi guys, having a major issue here with this 2.2 update from Apple. I have a 16GB 1st Gen iPod Touch and am running Windows Vista Home Premium along with iTunes 8.
When I click to update my software from 1.5.1 to 2.2, it goes through the whole process, but when it should finish, it says "Update could not be completed, Error 14." I then try to restore the iPod, it won't do that either. The iPod gets stuck on the screen showing the iTunes w/usb cable picture.
    Any help on this?

    You can try this: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1275
Beyond that if you are near an Apple Store you might make a Genius Bar appointment.

  • My 4th gen iPod Touch will not turn on

Over the last two years, I've battled with inconsistent performance from my iPod Touch 32GB 4th Gen. At some point, I think it got overheated, and I believe that's when the battery issues started. Here's an in-depth look at the various problems...
    1) The iPod will not turn on for weeks at a time. YES, I HAVE tried pressing the home button and wake button at the same time. Please do not suggest that I do that. When I plug it into either a USB port or my wall charger, the iPod will either A) not respond in 90% of cases or B) show the little charging symbol in the other 10%. If I unplug my iPod at this point, it shows the typical "Connect to charger" illustration. However, if I leave it connected to the wall, it will sit there, acting like it's charging, but never actually does. It never even gets to the Apple screen, and this often goes on for days. I have already tried "restore" mode in iTunes to no avail either.
    2) The iPod will charge (after weeks off of the charger), but only for about 25-30 minutes. Once I get it to turn on, it will only charge to about 20% usually, and then I have to remove and re-insert the USB plug to get it to charge further. I cannot use the iPod during this charging time, as it will deplete the battery and put it back in the state from number 1 for weeks. In connection to this problem, my laptop (primary charging source) now makes the sound effect of a USB device being inserted and removed fairly often, even when no iPod is connected, and when the iPod is connected, the USB ports will randomly charge (or not charge) my iPod.
    3) Even on full charge (that rare occasion), my battery life only lasts about an hour.
I don't have a Genius bar anywhere near here, and this iPod is at least 3 years old, so it's not worth pouring a lot of money into to repair or replace. Any solutions?

    Not Charge
    - See:
    iPod touch: Hardware troubleshooting
iPhone and iPod touch: Charging the battery
    - Try another cable.
    - Try another charging source
    - Inspect the dock connector on the iPod for bent or missing contacts, foreign material, corroded contacts, broken, missing or cracked plastic.
Sounds like at least a bad battery

  • My 4th gen iPod touch will not power on, will not charge anywhere, and is not recognized as plugged in by iTunes. This is irritating, as a friend had given it to me in perfect working condition because she got a new 5th gen iPod Touch.

I just got this 4th-gen Touch from a friend because she got a new 5th-gen. when she gave it to me, the 4th-gen was in perfect working order, and I haven't used it since she gave it to me. I had put it in sleep mode and put it on my dresser, wher it has sat without being messed with for two weeks. Now, all of a sudden, it won't power on, it won't charge no matter WHERE i plug it in to charge, and not even a hard reboot has worked. My computer will not even recognize that it is even plugged in. There is no red low battery symbol displayed, nothing to make it seem as if it is charging, and, if it is charging, no response is evoked from it when I tap it, or push any buttons. The warranty on the thing has expired, and I really need to find out what is wrong with it and get it fixed. Can ANYBODY HELP ME?????????  if somebody can point me in the right direction, or even help me get it physically fixed, i am willing to give MAJOR points, and it would be greatly appreciated.

Didn't you already post something similar:
Yesterday, I went and bought a refurbished 3rd-generation iPod touch, with a warranty for needed repairs in the future. When I went home after buying it, I plugged it into my computer to start charging. I plugged it in, and the battery in the iPod exploded, and now it won't power on period, even when it is plugged in or docked. I bought a warranty to go with the iPod because I figured that I was probably going to drop it, and then need it repaired. But Apple cannot even find the purchase record on file from where I bought the AppleCare warranty on it, so now I am stuck with what is now basically a paperweight. What should I do?
    iPod touch, iOS 4
And would this be the same iPod with the fried battery?

  • 3rd gen ipod touch will not sync having done so on coutless occassions and now it just does 1 phase of sync

I have a 3rd gen 8gb ipod touch when I try to sync it it goes through phase one of the sync and then says sync complete, changing nothing on the ipod
if I reset my Ipod and it wipes everything off and then it still wont sync I will have a worthlerss ipod no tune or apps on it

I have checked for latest updates but there are none i had the errors wrong they are actually:
"Attempting to copy to the disc "iPod touch" failed. An error occurred while writing to the device."
"iTunes could not copy "song name" to the iPod "iPod name" because an unknown error occurred (-20)."
the strange thing is i am allowed to take things off because i had some voice recordings and they got transferred into iTunes but its just copying onto the device that is the problem i also checked my Anti-Virus software and it hasn't blocked iTunes or anything associated with Apple. i will also check my computer's manufacturing website for updates.
