General appleworks drawing and painting help ?????

1) i am basically interested in manipulating images on a basic level
i.e erasing certain parts and replacing them with others (e.g shapes)
i open appleworks in paint mode and understand i can select the eraser and then use it freehand to click over any parts i wish to delete
i want to do this on a document of my own instead of doing it from a blank peice but when i open my own picture in appleworks it doesnt allow me to select the eraser to do this as it did in paint when starting a new piece
how do i go about this?
2) i also want to be able to select an area of the image and then copying it and then pasting it again onto the same image so that there is a somewhat duplicate of that image on the whole image wich i can then move around if i wish
is it possible to do this too?
sorry if i sound confusing, im trying to describe best i can, im coming from microsoft paint and so am trying to do the same things i did on there,

Hello
It seems that your documents are opened as Draw ones.
To use the eraser you must open them as Paint ones.
In fact to do exactly what you ask for it would be useful to use the two formats.
Use the paint one to erase unneeded areas.
Select what you want to display, copy then paste in a Draw document.
Do the same with an other bloc of the original picture.
So, you will have several blocks whose behaviour will mimic layers.

  • Installed Lion yesterday and now have no way to open Apple Works draw and paint files.

    Anyone have suggestions?

Gene, those are incredibly old applicaitons that were based on PPC (Power PC) versions of OS X. Beginning with Lion legacy apps that are PPC based are no longer supported. There are numerous tools availalbe however you will need to do a little legwork to find what you want. I would recommend using Google and search using "Appleworks draw and paint replacements Lion"  and you will find a lot of hits. Once you have located one that will import your legacy files then you should be all set.
BTW if you would lke to provide feedback to Apple regarding this you can reach them at www.apple.com/feedback.

  • Appleworks 6 draw and paint crash/restart typing in text tool, save crash

This has happened 15 times in the past week,
1st in draw when typing using text tool many times, so I got into saving, then same last night in paint, i was trying to save because familiar with problem crash and the automatic restart, this happened when trying to save file and typing file name in popup window, I lost quite a bit of work, 1hr., there is not much point in trying to use this app. if this cannot be fixed.
Also, many of the tools are grayed out and not usable, and pallets specifically line weights arrows not available. No color pallet for line, no way to draw straight line in paint mode, much more that is difficult or impossible, can't figure out easy way to make new page the size I want other than by adjusting pixel numbers.
May be or not related, when I try to open a doc file from outside, I get a popup telling me I have to buy apple software.
This macbook is new as of Jan. 2010, the box said ilife etc., so is this true, I would expect what came with the macbook to just work, no hassle.
Should I try gimp?, someone told me it is as good as photoshop even easier.
    I have paintbrush, tux, etc,
None of these apps. works as well as the old macpaint and macdraw from way back in the old black and white days. All very discouraging. This stuff should work as well as those apps. did. Oh well, I rather like the old pencil and paper, but I was trying to do a brochure.
Photos, typesetting, drawing, cut paste etc.
Isn't this what appleworks is for?
anybody out there have any suggestions.
I read 'strange behavior appleworks' and peggy's re, I don't find any appleworks in my preference folder as suggested.
Is it possible other keystroke commands like in speech app. could cause this restart?
Thank you anyone out there who reads this and might know an easy fix.

  • Offscreen drawing and Events help needed!!

    Hi,
I have run into a problem... I need to create a rather complicated image with lots of interactivity. As a simplified example, I need to add a grid, a histogram, and a pie chart on the same JPanel.
Normally, you create your images in your class, set up listeners on your graphics objects and voila, clickable images.
But I want to create all my images in a separate class, attach listeners there and then add that image and its listeners to my JPanel. Otherwise my class gets huge and painful- some of these objects (the histogram for example) need to establish URL connections, execute JDBC querys, be threaded, etc. According to what I know about OOP, these should certainly be in their own class.
So, if I wanted to draw a 10x10 grid, I could simply do:
DrawGrid grid = new DrawGrid( 10, 10 ); In DrawGrid, I would have listeners on each cell, so I can keep track of what was clicked.
Adding grid to my JPanel also adds the listeners associated with grid...
I initially tried this as a separate JPanel, and then to just add the new JPanel to the 'central' one, but this wont work because some of my graphics must overlap each other- and I couldnt get graphics to overlay multiple JPanels.
I also created my graphic by extending BufferedImage and then doing:
    g2d.drawImage( buffer1, 0, 0, this);
    g2d.drawImage( buffer2, 0, 0, this);
Which worked for the images- but none of the listeners worked. :(
I really need some help on this one.
Also what are the best books for Java 2D graphics and interacting with them??? I gotta buy one.
    Thanks!
    Bryan

From what I understand, you want to have multiple images on one surface and have them all contain their own mouse listeners. As far as i know this is impossible (but what do i know:)
What you could do is have a single mouse listener and subdivide the surface whenever images are placed there. So when the user clicks it checks to see in which section was clicked, then forwards that info to the appropriate object. And to deal with overlapping just have the top image have control over that area. If you needed to get more complex wich your bounderies you could have an array of pixels representing the surface and flag them bassed on the objects in that area.
It may get a bit slow if your boundaries are too complex

    Hi Akash,
Here is a small description on lock object.
The lock mode controls whether several users can access data records at the same time. The lock mode can be assigned separately for each table in the lock object. When the lock is set, the corresponding lock entry is stored in the lock table of the system for each table.
Access by more than one user can be synchronized in the following ways:
Exclusive lock: The locked data can only be displayed or edited by a single user. A request for another exclusive lock or for a shared lock is rejected.
Shared lock: More than one user can access the locked data at the same time in display mode. A request for another shared lock is accepted, even if it comes from another user. An exclusive lock is rejected.
Exclusive but not cumulative: Exclusive locks can be requested several times from the same transaction and are processed successively. In contrast, exclusive but not cumulative locks can be called only once from the same transaction. All other lock requests are rejected.

  • Upgraded to 10.6.7 and now having various issues with Appleworks Drawing program.

HELP...I just upgraded to 10.6.7 and now my Appleworks drawing program is slow - beach balls all the time, I can not copy into other programs, copy and paste messes with the formatting, fills and lines disappear, Fonts are messed up when copied...ON and ON..I Installed rosetta from the 10.6.7 install disk but still no luck.   Any advice is appreciated, I am in a crunch with drawing deadlines an no time to learn another drawing program..Yes I am old school.and HELP!

You could look at EazyDraw: the version on the website is $95 download, $139 box and manual: it will open ClarisWorks drawings and is a powerful vector drawing program which makes a good replacement for Appleworks.
There is a much cheaper version in the Mac App Store but note that this version does not open AppleWorks documents.

  • Appleworks Drawing & Painting: Color palettes *still* getting scrambled

I have a problem when using Appleworks drawing files with painting frames.
An Appleworks painting frame normally has two color palettes. One comes from the Drawing document, and this determines the background color of the painting frame. Anywhere that has no other color has this color. The other comes from the painting frame itself.
When clicking into the painting frame, both of these can get scrambled, with unpredictable results. In some cases, although both the drawing document and the painting frame used the same [presentation] palette, and the background color and another color were supposed to be the same, one could switch to another color. I started resetting the background color of each painting frame to white [in the drawing document], and filling it with whatever color I needed [in the painting frame] which solved one of the problems.
However, I'm still facing the annoying problem that the color palette gets scrambled. When I click into the Painting Frame, the color palette scrambles. If I start painting, it gets screwed up. If I switch the palette from presentation, to something else, back to presentation, that fixes it for the moment. If I click out of the painting frame, and then back into it, or click from one painting frame into another painting frame, the color palette scrambles again. I have to switch the palette twice each time I enter the frame.
Is there any way to correct this problem?

The earliest version of AppleWorks stable in OS X is 6.2.4. That you're using 6.2.2 could be a big part of the problem. Since AppleWorks was designated "end-of-life" it is difficult to find the updaters (especially the US/North American) on Apple's site. Here is the page with the links I have for the 6.2.9 updater. The page has a link to the North American updater in the upper right (the blue 15.8 MB) & links to other languages further down.
    AppleWorks 6.2.9 for Mac
Whenever you do an update, it's a good idea to do two maintenance tasks, one for the system (Repair Permissions) and one for AppleWorks (delete preferences). (Thanks to Barry for this way to format this very common answer.)
To Repair permissions, launch Disk Utility, found in the Utilities folder in your Applications folder, click on First Aid, then on Repair Permissions.
To delete AppleWorks’ preference files, go to HD > Users > (your account) > Library > Preferences. Find and delete the file com.apple.appleworks.plist. Find and open the folder AppleWorks in this Preferences folder, then delete all of the enclosed files (with the exception of the Button Bar Preferences if you have customized the Button Bars). AppleWorks will recreate the preference files as it needs them.

  • What is the replacement to the Drawing and Database functions in Appleworks?

I rely on the Appleworks suite of software, especially the Word Processing, Spreadsheet, Drawing, and Database programs. I cannot upgrade my operating system without losing the ability to use Appleworks. I would switch to iWorks, but it does not seem to have either a Drawing or a Database program. Is there some other program that is out there?

Word Processing documents can be opened directly in Pages (AppleWorks 6 only), though Panergy Software'sdocXConverter v3.2 ($19.95) can convert Appleworks 5 and 6 Word Processing documents to RTF (though it has been reported that it can only handle documents which contain only text, not those which include images or frames); and the latest version of the free LibreOffice has announced that it can open AppleWorks 6 Word Processing documents: it does appear to be able to handle at least some embedded images.
Draw Documents can be opened directly only in EazyDraw (the more expensive version from their website, not the cheaper one from the Mac App Store, and you will need v4.0 'Retro' not the most recent version) or Intaglio (though this appears not to be able to handle very complex drawings).
Spreadsheets can be opened directly only in Numbers.
Presentations can be opened directly only in Keynote.
To use other programs, or open Painting or Database documents at all, you must export from AppleWorks first: nothing will open these types of documents.
There are better paint programs around than AW's rather primitive paint module. As to Databases, the only real replacement is Filemaker Pro which is quite expensive. You can only move your databases to it by exporting as ASCII text and importing into FMPro - you will have to recreate all your formatting and calculations.

  • Appleworks Drawing files can be opened and used with Eazy Draw

I bought a new IMac with Snow Leopard last week and after a lot of frustration and talking to Apple Tech Support folks, determined that the several thousand Drawing files would never be able to be used on my new Mac. How could Apple leave me high and dry with no access to my files. Several pages back on this forum someone mentioned Eazy Draw and so I went to www.eazydraw.com and payed $20 for a 9 month trial. Within 2 minutes of downloading the trial version I was using it and opening the files. It works wonderful for opening the Drawing files and working with them. I assume it works equally as well with the other areas of Appleworks.

I assume it works equally as well with the other areas of Appleworks.
No: Draw only. Pages opens Word Processing, Numbers opens Spreadsheets, Keynote opens Presentations, but nothing will open Paint or Database documents.

  • I have always used Appleworks Drawing for making the frames and grid for my lesson plans. Any suggestions of what to use now?

    Please help!

This depends on whether you need to open previously created AppleWorks documents. The only programs which can do this are EazyDraw (right) and Intaglio (though when I tested the demo it wouldn't open complex drawings such as the one below). If you are dealing with complex technical drawings EazyDraw is probably the best choice: it's about the same cost as the whole of iWork (when downloaded, and rather more expensive on a CD), but cheaper than some other vector based programs, and seems to handle the whole process well - though it does operate somewhat differently from AppleWorks. There is a much cheaper version available on the Mac App Store, but note that it does not open AppleWorks Draw Documents: neither does the latest version from their website (4.1.x) - for this you need 4.0.x 'Retro', also available from the website.
If you are only concerned with making new documents, then you can do a certain amount in Pages: but a better bet might be Swift Publisher 2, which is a layout program with a library of clip-art. I use it in preference to Pages for layout, though not for word processing - it isn't really designed for that.
EasyDraw is also a powerful drawing program: if you're not concerned with opening old AppleWorks documents the version from the Mac App Store is the one to go for.

  • Can I expect Appleworks DRAW to be upgraded? I have Ataxia and it's an absolute gem for me - but it's getting sticky.

Cwk DRAW is a winner! But it's getting sticky. I have Pages as well but tryiing to do illustrations with it laughable. Or cryable. Why does't Apple see the chance to polish up their wonderful DRAW.V6.cwk?

I too LOVE AppleWorks Draw element.  I never much used any of the other parts including Paint.  I now have over a thousand draw documents and continue to create more to this day.  I get complements for the graphic qualities of flyers I've made with AW6.  I use it to create forms for business and personal needs, electrical schematics, floor plans, charts, business cards, brochures.  The list is endless.  A great 'sidekick' to AW6 is Graphic Converter.  It's a Shareware product out of Germany that works great for many tasks AW can't do.  And I only use maybe 5% of the functions GC is capable of doing.
I love Pages as a MS WORD replacement.  It is a joke to try to use it to replace any graphic program. I tried EasyDraw and found it may be a good replacement for someone to use starting out but impossible to convert my many AWDraw documents as doing so imports the entire document as single (ie: grouped) graphic object.
My solution: I spent $215 for a used but in great condition flat screen iMac running on OS10.5.8.  That is the most current OS that can run AW6 without problems. It is fast (ie: building a graphic font menu to select from) and free of deterioration.  Using Printer Sharing, I can print wirelessly via my MacMini running Mtn Lion.
On 10.6.8, AW falls apart quite rapidly.  Auxillary windows fail after only a few minutes to a half hour if I am lucky.  For instance, the font size window will open with the size field blank instead of with the size of the selected text shown.  Entering a number fails.  At that point, I can still use the [command-> or command-< to enlargen or shrink by one point size] so there are workarounds for many of these bugs.  At that point, I usually save the document, quite AW and then restart it for a few more minutes before problems arise.  My MBPro runs 10.6.8, so I still use it for mobile convenience then move my creation over to the iMac for permenant storage.
And I agree with the idea of Apple putting in the time to evolve the Draw element of AW into a program that runs on the new OS's.  All the other parts have fine replacements: Pages, Numbers, Keynotes, Filemaker/Bento, etc. Draw stands out as the sole element left behind by "Progress".

when i try to restore it.. it is taking 15+ hours .. and that time stays like that for almost 3 hours...  it does not happen.
i even called the apple help center. and they said me to install as a new device... and when i said what wil happen to my messages.. they say .. they wont stay.. and wil be deleted.. and all my apps i need to download again..
but earlier i din need to do any of it.!!! it worked really fine .!!!
please help me..!!! i got some important details in this back up.... please help me.!!!

Once in a while the restore process seems to mess up.  What I don't understand is why you would perform a weekly restore.
At any rate, if you must restore, perform a device reset (settings>general>reset) and then you will have the opportunity to restore from iCloud.  Restore a device whenever it no longer works correctly, not just as a matter of maintenance.  If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
