"General error" exporting multi clip....???

When I try to "export as a QT conversion ,a created Multi clip...I get a" General error" message with a ! ....
If try to export before creating the multi clip it works... the canvas window also goes red and says un-available till re boot FCP.........
Im also getting some weird stuff regarding Anamorphic ...
I set capture settings to DV anamorphic and then when I open the file up...
its not ticked ,until I click on it and the TICK appears....
tried trashing prefs...
Any thoughts
ROB

Not clear what you're trying to do. Are you trying to export a multiclip? Don't think that will work. Are you trying to export a single angle, no problem. If you're trying to export a sequence containing a "switched" multiclip, should work. What are you trying to accomplish?
And the anamorphic thing is always been a problem as far as I know. Just changing the anamorphic flag after import solves the problem. I don't think fcp sets the flag properly on export, or it doesn't read it properly on import. But that's always been my experience. I'm still in fcp5.14

  • General Error + export

Hi, am not having any success .
project is finished & I cant get it to export as a QT for the online delivery.
sequence settings are 1920X1080p, 23.98, ProRes HQ
export using current settings in FCP 7 project (MacPro 5.1 with 24 GB RAM).
Have had this happen in the past with other projects & i always managed to export the edit  out until I found a corrupted render file, or clip.
    Here that does not work.
Have tried exporting out until I find an issue.
    have tried using media manger.
have trashed preferences & copying edit into a new project.
aslo exported out as a XML & relinking.
drive is 6 TB & has 3 TB os space left on it.
Tried exporting to a different drive as well - internals & RAID connected with fibre channel.
not sure what else to do.

thanks for the reply yet again Shane.
everything renders & plays fine -  edit is 49 min
the problem is when i export, or try to
there were stills (TIFFs), but they were all redone in After Effects as PR HQ QTs as they had movement added & other filters that were all applied in AE. they are all now 1920X1080p, 23.98, PR HQ QTs.
all the other footage is from HDCAM masters loaded with the above codec, etc.
i tried a media manage out & it copies about 500 of the 600 os so clips.
the other 100 problem clips that will not copy are all color renders/QTs.
i am afraid that the fles have been  corrupted as the drive they are on has been giving us problems
all of the 600 clips for the project were color corrected in color & renered out to that same drive, but it is only affecting those 100 clips.
would it make sense to re-render out the entire project from color to a new drive?

  • "General Error" when exporting unrendered clip?

I have .mov clips in my project that already have an alpha channel in them (format is Animation millions of colors +).
They're on the timeline in a sequence, with a single transition between them.
I want to export back to Animation Millions of Colors + in order to keep the alpha channel (this is for Flash video conversion).
The composite mode for the clips are set to normal, with straight alpha. I can see that the alpha is intact on the clips in the timline by temporarily placing an image on a layer under them.
I understand that you have to export without rendering in order to preserve the alpha channel.
However, when I try to export to ANY codec without rendering, I get a dialog that says only "General Error." Rendering will allow export, but of course the alpha channel is gone now.
I'm running System 10.4.10 with the QuickTime 7.3 upgrade installed, FCE 3.5.1. Did QT 7.3 break something?
    Thanks in advance,
    Steve

    Tom,
Thanks for your reply. The problem isn't that I didn't use the right codec (I did, as I said in my original post). The problem is that I am not able to export an undrendered clip using any codec. All I get is the "General Error" message.
Thus no transparency in the exported file.
Also to clarify, I am not keying the source files to create transparency in FCE. The source files already have an alpha channel in them.
I have downgraded to QuickTime 7.2, so 7.3 was not the culprit. I have also run the usual system cleanup utilities like AppleJack, etc.
    Thanks,
    Steve

  • Multi clip won't open, get general error message

I have a multi clip that contains only 2 clips. When I double click the multi clip, I get a "General Error" "Out of Memory" message. I threw away the preferences and restarted, not sure what else to do. FCP 5.0.6

Probably something to do with having a non-existant version of FCP
Of the 5.0 series, 5.0.4 was the last.
    What do you really have?
Seriously though, what video format are you using, what is your Easy Setup and Sequence Setting?
Where is the source material located on your computer?

  • General Error while exporting QT

The last couple of projects I've done have been online conforms to HD 10bit uncompressed.
After finishing all of my tweeks, I wish to output a master Quicktime. As usual I place my in and out markers at the beginning and end of my timeline, and select Export to QuickTime Movie. I select current settings and make self contained. I target my XRAID with better than 1.5 TB available.
I've had both of these project fail well into the output process. All FCP says is "General Error". After a little research I discover that I'm not the only one with this problem. I tried trashing all of my FCP prefs and trashing my render files and re-building them.
If I Export to Compressor, the entire timeline will output without failing.
So, why is this happening? and... If I have a 1920x1080 23.98p 422 10bit uncompressed timeline and I export thru Compressor set to transcode to the very same settings. Is my video compromised in any way?
My latest piece is about 60 minutes, it appears to fail while halfway done. The previous one was 20 minutes and failed earlier.
    Intel 8 core 3.0Ghz, 6 Gig of RAM, OSX 10.5.5, QT 7.5.5, FCP 6.0.5, Kona3 (v6 software)

I eventually found a couple of clips 3/4s into my timeline that were fixes from Color. They were rendered out in an AJA YUV codec instead of the normal Uncompressed 10bit 422 codec. Although they looked fine, they were the fly in the ointment. When I ran the two offending clips out thru Compressor and replaced them in the timeline, the entire project exported in one go.
I wish FCP would do a better job of informing what and where the problem is, instead of the "General Error" message.

  • While exporting i get "general error"

I was doing a project that was had about 12 different sections so I just edited them all in different sequences. Well when I was done I just took all of the sequences from the browser and dropped them on the time line and rendered it. I then exported it as QuickTime conversion as an uncompressed file. It would get to about 40% and it would just stop and a window would come up and all it would say is general error. What is wrong, thankyou Joe.

It could be many things. Whatever it is its about 40% of the way in your timeline.
It could be a corrupt clip or graphic. More likely to be a graphic so if there any graphics around there make sure they are RGB and not CMYK.
It could be a corrupt render. Select a chunk in the vicinity and Control Click>Choose Remove Attributes> Make sure NOTHING is selected and choose OK. The render it again.
FWIW I had this issue a LOT with a project I worked on recently. I think I had a cranky drive. It kept corrupting my audio render files. So every time it would happen I would just do the remove attributes trick with the audio and that would fix it most of the time.
Post back and let us know if any of that helped or not.

  • General error in FCP re: rendering and export  after Quicktime 7.5.5 update

    Hi
My FCP 6.0.4 rendering and export to Compressor no longer works after an update to Quicktime 7.5.5.
Rendering fails after a few seconds "General Error!" pops up. Exporting to Compressor, after setting it compressing, Compressor after a few seconds fails. (audio is processed) My current work around is exporting a sequence using Quicktime conversion (time consuming) and then opening in Compressor.
I've done the usual, deleting prefs, new sequences and projects, even saving movs in different codecs.
    (been using H.264)
My sequences are all custom sizes but tests using presets also fail.
    Any ideas anyone?
And I was so happy the Quicktime upgrade could play sequence movs recorded months earlier that until now I couldn't play properly due to previous Quicktime upgrades!
Apple gives with one hand and takes with the other....

    Hi There,
Thanks for your reply on this.
Well basically since I'm using content already in the H.254 codec (eg: a trailer off the internet, or the downsizing of HD footage) i'm just exporting to a codec that didn't have to be rendered and gave quality results. I used motion jpeg B as an export codec because it was quick (although HD space hungry) with no drop in quality. The resulting exports could be imported into a custom sequence (720 x 405) as square pixel aspect ratio files. Overlapping the canvas with other windows (eg: viewer) meant I could play a clip (with dropped frames) but not have to render it. I selected the H.264 codec as the sequence codec because I've found other codecs introduce darkening or lightening or blurring or other undesirable artefacts when exported to Compressor. H.264 used in the sequence settings exported through Compressor would give resulting m2v's as sharp and contrast accurate as the source file.
That was until the recent 7.5.5 Quicktime update where attempts to do the same things I did before result in "General Error!" coming up after a few seconds of play or rendering.
Traditional DV codecs are "blurry" in my opinion, especially when coping with web content or conversion of HD downloads.
If you can suggest an editing codec that works best with FCP that is quick, doesn't introduce blurring or general degrading of the image I'd be happy to try it out. I typically downsize HD content from the web for DVD playback, so it's usually in a H.264 codec already. So i would need a codec for export from Quicktime that would work best with a codec in FCP. That doesn't alter picture quality when compressed to m2v in Compressor.
    Thanks!

What are the properties of your source clips for your project? Click on the source clip in the FCP browser, and once selected type Command + 9 to see the properties of the clip. Either report those properties, or  take a screen shot of the Item Properties and post it here.
    What are your sequence settings?

  • "General Error" when I export to quicktime movie .mov

I have no idea why all of a sudden FCE4 says "General Error" when I export using quicktime movie... If i use another option like mpeg4 or other it works fine. What could be a problem?
    I have lots of memory.

I made the movie self contained and it started but then stops at 10%. This isnt anything complex just a few clips edited together w/ music. I just want to upload to youtube. I have no idea what the deal is!

  • General Error on export to quicktime

I am working in a timeline with Motion JPEG B as my codec, and lately when I export to wqicktime I get a general error. Occationaly it will export succesfully, but most of the time it gets 1/4 of the way through it's progress bar and stops, or doesn't even bring the progress bar up and gives me the error right away.
    Any thoughts?

Yes, export to quicktime using current settings. The clips are only 5 - 15 seconds long and there are Terrabites of space available on the target disk.
I suspect network speed might be an issue, but it's inconsistent and hard to pinpoint.

  • General error on export

    hi guys,
i have a show that i need to export. after color correcting it, i am finding that it is impossible to export it, and while the export starts, it eventually quits, giving me a "general error" message. In my experience, there might be something corrupted in the timeline (a clip or such). Any other ideas? I can play the timeline just fine. I can't export it.

Trash the preferences. That's the first thing to do.
You might indeed have a corrupt piece of data. I'd do some short tests to see if the operation works at all.
How are you trying to export? Which process and settings?

  • 'general error' when trying to get clip from browser to viewer

I'm trying to put together a short instructional video (a kind of 'quick intro' on what a particular website is all about).
Some clips in the video consist of screen captures (made with iShowU) while others are 'live' from a firewire camcorder.
There's no problem with the camcorder clips. All going according to plan there.
However, *when I try to get the screen grab clips from the browser to the viewer (to mark in/out points, etc), I get a 'general error' message followed in quick succession by an 'out of memory' message*. (I have 8GB ram so I'm sure memory's not the issue.)
I can drag the screen grab clips from the browser directly to a sequence in the timeline, but not to the viewer.
Neither quitting FCP nor logging out (and back in again) fixes the problem. (BTW, I'm working with a PAL setup on the camera and am capturing in PAL dimensions in iShowU, if this has any relevance here.)
I'm tearing my hair out... Maybe it's something very simple that I'm doing wrong? *Any ideas on how I might get the screen grab clips from the browser to the viewer?*
    TIA.
    Hugh

Sounds like iShowU may be writing a less-than-valid QuickTime file.
If you can successfully drag one of these items into the timeline, I'd drag it in and then File->Export->QuickTime Movie... checking the Make Movie Self-Contained box. If this works and you have a lot of clips you might try dragging them all into a timeline and then saving them as one big movie. Sounds like they're not that long so such an approach shouldn't get you into FCP performance problems.
Another approach would be to open each movie in QuickTime and do a Save As... with the "Save as self-contained movie" option.
Either way these will probably write a MOV file that FCP will be happy with.
    Good Luck!

  • Time Line Wont Export, general error

I have a time line in FCP that is set for DV-NTSC that is about 5 hrs long with markers. I am exporting it Dv-NTSC, but it gives me a general error instead of finishing. I have no idea how long it takes to get to that point because I leave it over night. I set the computer to not go to sleep or power down during the process.

Yeah, this problem is a bear to deal with.
Last few times it happened to me, I managed to trace it to a single bad frame in one of my clips.
    Is your timeline rendered?
If not, you should start there before trying to export.
Narrow it down by rendering your timeline in chunks.
If it's already rendered, and you get the error on export, try exporting chunks that you can stitch together later.
Once you find the offending clip, opening it in Quicktime, re-exporting it and bringing in the new file usually fixes the problem.
It's tedious and has the chance of eating up a lot of your day, but it's all I got.

  • Export general error poser

Now here's a poser - well for me anyway.
I've been trying to export a 96 min movie via Quicktime to iDVD but kept getting a "general error" message after about 82%. By trial and error I managed to identify a 5 min clip that was causing the problem but I have no idea why. Any suggestions ??
    Ewart

Thanks VJK. Actually the faulty clip and the one following both had the same subject material and the whole project is 16 bit.
I discovered that the fault was right at the end of the clip so it was simply a matter of snipping off a couple of seconds to rectify the problem. But I would still like to know what it actually was that stopped the 90 min vid exporting via QT.
    Cheers

  • Final Cut 7 Exporting - GENERAL ERROR Message

Been working on this for days now and it's driving me nuts. I'm trying to export a 22-minute long sequence. These are my export settings:
    FCP 7
File -> Export -> Quicktime Conversion
    Format: MPEG-4
    Options:
    File Format: MP4
    Video:
    Video Format: H264
Data Rate: 25,000 (approximately - it might be a little more or less to get it to 2GB)
    Image Size: 1280X720
    Frame Rate: 29.97
    Key Frame: Every
    Frames: 3
    Video Options:
    Restrict Profiles to: Main
Encoding Mode: Faster (unless you want to spend a couple of days rendering)
    Audio:
    Format: AAC-LC
    Data Rate: 320
    Channels: Stereo
    Output Rate: 48.000 kHz
    Encoding Quality: Best
I keep getting a General Error message. I've tried everything. Settings are kosher, I've rendered every single clip, full timeline renders perfectly well, I export just small segments and that works, don't know what to do.
    Suggestions?

Yeah, it has to be a settings issue. Just won't let me export something that large. I threw in the quicktime file of the last portion into the timeline with the rest. General error once again at 80%. So I know it's not something in the actual sequence.
If it exports as a quicktime, and then it exports in three broken up segments without a hitch, there must be something that's not allowing me to export a file that large.
    Any clues?
