General Error Issue: FCP 7 on my Mac Book Pro 10.6.8 2.53 GHZ 4GB

I'm working on a lengthy project, multiple timelines. Out of nowhere I started getting a "General Error" message on playback in a specific area of the timeline. I trash preferences, trash render preferences (making the timeline now red), and now the "General Error" pops up everywhere on the timeline on playback and render.
After trying everything I could think of:
1. resetting scratch disks
2. trashing preferences
3. trashing render preferences
4. repairing hard drives
5. Converting to earlier saved versions of the project.
6. Re installing FCP
7. Finally, I tried creating a new project and dropping the original media in and recutting (matching timecode) and even this popped up the general error.
I'm cutting converted RED one footage and 16mm footage converted to quicktime files. I am only using about 1/2 of the harddrive space on my comp, and the scratch disks are currently set to a 2TB external G Drive with 500GB left.
This project has existed for over 9months that I've been tinkering with it and all of a sudden this issue appears. I find it strange.
I wasn't super organized in setting up the project (my first large film and first film ever on fcp), and the scratch disks have moved around a lot, etc. But, I've never moved the original clips, and it doesn't seem to be an issue of relinking the clips either. They don't seem to be offline at all.
The format of is super wide 2240 x 960 on the red footage and super square for the 16mm footage (I think 4x3)
Let me know if you have ANY thoughts/ideas/help or if you need additional info.

  • I have a mac book pro, 2006 with an 2.16 GHz Intel Core Duo processor, can I update to Lion? to use icloud.

Apple keep telling me I need to update to icloud but I'm not sure if Lion will work on my Mac. I've upgraded to snow leopard which seems to have knackered my .me or .mac account (whatever it's called now), so I don't seem to have any option but to upgrade to Lion if I every want to see my emails again.
Apple say I must have a Intel Core 2 processor for Lion to work...... at least I think that's what they say.
I have a mac book pro, 2006 with an 2.16 GHz Intel Core Duo processor, can I update to Lion?

    Lion System Requirements
Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
    2GB of memory
    OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
    7GB of available space
Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
If you have a Core Duo model then you cannot upgrade to Lion. You can upgrade to Snow Leopard, but iCloud is not available for Snow Leopard.
Open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. Look for the Model ID in the displayed information. If you have a MacBookPro 2,1 or later then you have a Core 2 Duo model and can upgrade to Lion.

Only you can make that determination. All things being equal the 2.5 GHz model is slower.

  • Help required with optical drive issues on a 2008 Mac Book Pro

I've got a problem with my Optical Drive not accepting CD, DVD etc. All the disks I put in just whirr around for a few seconds and then spit out the discs. First I've read on loads of discussion forums that the symptoms said the optical drive was capput, so I bought a new one and installed it using those very good guides by ifixit. Booted up the Mac Book Pro, all working as previously, put in a CD into the NEW optical drive....same result. So methinks this is some sort of software/config issue. Read a few more blogs/discussion and manged to get the optical drive to read my CD's when I put them in during boot up - works as it should, copies them to iTunes etc.....Ejected the CD put in another one.....back to the original problem.....disc whirrs around and get spat out after a few seconds.
Anyone experienced this problem as well and found a resolution....

    Hi Mate,
    I didn't do an OS install, I took it to an apple store and made a Genius Bar appointemnt. Explained the proble and after 15min conversation, they diagnosed it as teh following;
The felt/rubber where you put the CD/DVD had gone hard and the friction is causing the CD/DVD to get stuck and be loaded. They tried to tell me that I need to replace the top case  (£140+VAT) as its in-built into it or I can use a £3 spudger to push the CD's in......needles to say the Spudger works fine.....Shame I wasted £100 on the new optical drive ;o( Maybe sell teh spare on eBay....Happy days!

  • Universal crossgrade update from FCP HD to FCP Studio on Mac Book Pro

    Hi all,
Just ordered my universal upgrade for my MBP from Apple to go from FCP-HD to FCP Studio. My MBP has FCPHD installed on it. I installed it without being aware that it was not compatable with the intel chip.
Just wondering if there are any problems associated with simpy installing the complete crossgrade FCP Studio without first uninstalling FCPHD.
Or is it suggested to completely uninstall FCPHD before installing the new universal version of FCP studio.
The answer may ship with the software but I was wondering if I should start going through the uninstall process as I hear it is a bit involved.
    Thanks for any help.

When I attempt to install the 5.1 cross-grade on a newly formatted hard drive, that is also set as the boot drive with the latest version of OSX on my dual G5, the 5.1 install goes through the entire process up until I get to the part where it begins actually installing the actual software applications. Then it fails--quits- completely quits installing. And yes, both of my optical disk drives are working. I have another disk drive that contains the last version of Final Cut Studio and when I first tried to install the cross-grade on that drive it wont even get past the screen that says that the software is checking to see if it can be installed on the drive. I was told by someone at Apple Pro Applications support that if 5.1 would not install on a new formatted hard drive that contained nothing but the latest version of OSX that I had bad install disks. It's a matter of getting them replaced. I KEEP GETTING THE RUN AROUND!!! It's like no one at Apple cares. I wait over two hours to get help, but I really am not getting help. When I call Panasonic for help with my AJ-HD27H VariCam Camcorders, or my a Aj-HD1200 decks, they bend over backwards to help me. Or when I have a problem with a Canopus Editing System help is easy and reliable.
Is there anyone who knows from whom I can go for an easy replacement of these instal disks?????

I have a mac book pro mid 2011 and it overheats is there any known issue with this model

Are you gaming or watching videos when the unit heats up? As your core temperatures rise, it's normal for the fans to speed up - but if you're not running any CPU/GPU intensive apps, it's not normal for your MBP to heat up or for the fans to run high. Download the free iStat Pro widget and either record or take a screen shot of your temps and fans speeds. Oh, and your MBP should not heat up just because you're using the power adapter.

  • Can I connect a Flat Diamondtron Display to a Mac Book Pro

    Hi,
My laptop screen is too low for me and is causing neck pain. I'd like to connect up a screen at a higher level. I own a 17" Studio Display Natural Flat Diamondtron. Will it connect to the Mac Book Pro (bought in 2007) 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo? If so, what cable(s) do I need and where would I get them, please
    Many thanks,
    Fiona.

    Hi Fiona!
Can you look on the back of the Studio display and find the Apple model number. It should be some like "M7649." Please post it--that can help people come up with more targeted solutions.
However, I believe your monitor uses the obsolete Apple Display Connector (ADC) technology that makes it expensive to connect to a modern Mac. The problem is that, in addition to the video signal, the ADC monitor must get power and USB through the cable. Your MBP's DVI port cannot provide power, just video.
The proper adaptor to make your monitor work on an MBP includes a power supply but is discontinued by Apple and was expensive even when new (US$100). It looked like this:
    !http://t3.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcRElYslCWkweQmelfAP-uFA7sDWHtLEXO02QwlC WmUXfQJILu8&t=1&usg=__pxb-xu6qbc3P852Fa4HK24nwDMw=!
When you find them, they can be twice as much on the used market.
The less expensive adaptors (US$20-40) are for the "other way," connecting a modern monitor to an older Mac. They generally look like this:
    !data:image/jpg;base64,/9j/4AAQSkZJRgABAQAAAQABAAD/2wCEAAkGBhAQEBQSDxAWFREWGBAWE hUSERARGxISFRAVFRQWGBIdGyYgFxksGRQSKy8gIzM1LC44FR4yNzA2OCYtOCwBCQoKDgwOFw8OGjUcH CQpKS4sKjU1KSwpKSwpKSksKS8tLCwsLCkpLCwsLCwpKSkpLCwsKSwsLCkpKSkpKSkpKf/AABEIAGgAa AMBIgACEQEDEQH/xAAbAAEAAgIDAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAABQYBAwIEB//EADsQAAIBAgMFBAYGCwAAAAAAA AABAgMRBRIhBDFBUYEGEyJxBxQyYZHBQ0RygtPwFyMzQlSSoaKywtH/xAAXAQEBAQEAAAAAAAAAAAAAA AAAAgED/8QAHxEBAQACAgMAAwAAAAAAAAAAAAECEQMSMUFRBBMh/9oADAMBAAIRAxEAPwD3EAAAAAAAA AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAXAAAAAAAAAAAAAcXNIDka61dQTb4a2Scn8FqzFSbfs/lGMi5eZNvxukPPHpT/ZJ Jc2szf3TZTrbQE392MfkSNDZ4RcmopNu7fM3po5zG3zVbk8RDzqbSv3Zf2sxTxucXapG/RxfwJo11qEJq0op+fyZvS+qb nuOOybbCqrxfmno15o3kHHCKkKycJ2prW6s39l/8ASaUuZWNt8ps+OQMZjNy2AAAw2ddyu7nHE68oU3K KTd46N5VZySevAr9LtU5RbjSz6pJQzNtPNru0Xhe848nLjjdVeONqxi5Wn2rqJX9Un1MS7WVl9TqdHF/ M5fuwV0qzJnKjvl0/xRU9o7ZSp01OdLK3OUMkmsycY5nfW3s248Ut5ZMI2l1Kam7eLK9N3so6cfJjllq Jyxsm3arTcYtpXaTaXOyIvYcW0iqmtVpOeVZUm9bavhu6EuyiYhtvqyq1MrkqVtE1eUnVjTSTbtvktWV yXWjGbXNbYuRn1tcis0MaqOVRSdOEYOMXKctM8qcZ5brS6UlfU7EcUi/rVDpKL/3MnLvw24aTi2tLctD XLE4xaTTV+O9EM8Wh/F7P/ND8Q6U8aVSpClFqop95edOcXGORQtZq928+7S1ver5eTR1XNMHTwerKVJZ tWm435pbmDtLtzbMQoOdOUVva04Xad7X6EFseEVKal+rlmk23O9KHF2WWHnwWpZgc8+LHO7qplYgJYbV 4Z+P0suSXLzMx2CqndqT3/SX3+5tLgv689Z4HKfi4S7V3qqbZgFWo7qDhJSzxnnpSaeWMWrSTWqhFX37 9xP4Vs8oUlGaSeuid+OmvlY7gOuHFjhdxNyt/jBXsa7OSqZ+7SlGdnKEm4+JSUk1L7ST6FiBeWMymqyX Txztr6LcSxDaVXg6CVku7rTlaElK7nHJHjaN766eVoSj6C8UhHR7G5Lhnrb3JO9+6srWfxZ78DZNTR2u 9vCv0GYjd2q7FrzjtDt4rpex06l17AejF4dGpKrWUq1Rwcu6i1CEYQcYqCfHxSvJ7lr6ABZKdq10KEYRUY7kDYDWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAD//2Q==!
and won't work for your needs.
You can purchase a smaller, no-name FP display new for what the proper adapter could cost, or pick up a cast-off 17- to 19-inch CRT monitor for a few pounds.
If I've confused the issue, please do post back. It is an area the needs explanation as people with the older ADC monitors are finding the obsolete technology a challenge with modern computers.

  • Mac book pro freeze at login

hi everyone, I have an issue with my 2010 mac book pro running os x 10.8
I have it running on mountain lion, I didn't really have any problem running it on mountain lion for a few weeks then one day I decided to install an anti virus program called avira. In the process of installing it, my mbp froze, so I did a hard reboot by holding the power button. I restarted and everything ran fine and the anti virus was installed. I began running a system scan and my laptop became really slow (I was getting the rainbow circles frequently) then it froze again. I did another hard reboot and now the furthest I've gone was the log in page. I am allowed to type in my passcode but when I press anything the rainbow circle comes on. Nothing will work after that the only thing I can do is to hard reboot it.
will someone please tell me what's going on?
I've had had this mbp for 2 years without any problem.
I haven't talked to anyone from apple but I've been researching online. Should I reinstall mountain lion or do I have to restore everything?

As suggested above, boot in safe mode.
Whenever you remove system modifications, they must be removed completely, and the only way to do that is to use the uninstallation tool, if any, provided by the third-party developers, or to follow their instructions. In some cases it may be necessary to re-download or even reinstall the software in order to get rid of it.
Here are some general guidelines. Suppose you want to remove something called “BrickYourMac.” First, consult the product's Help menu, if there is one, for instructions. Finding none there, look on the developer's website, say www.brickyourmac.com. (That may not be the actual name of the site; if necessary, search the Web for the product name.) If you don’t find anything on the website or in your search, email the developer. While you're waiting for a response, download BrickYourMac.dmg and open it. There may be an application in there such as “Uninstall BrickYourMac.” If not, open “BrickYourMac.pkg” and look for an Uninstall button.
If you can’t remove software in any other way, you’ll have to erase your boot volume and perform a clean reinstallation of OS X. Never install any third-party software unless you're sure you know how to uninstall it; otherwise you may create problems that are very hard to solve.
Trying to remove complex system modifications by hunting for files by name often will not work and may make the problem worse. The same goes for "utilities" that purport to remove software.

  • Why Should I Buy Another Mac Book Pro

I purchased a Mac Titanium Powerbook back in the day when it was so fresh and new, big bucks.  Within 2 years the logic board began freezing all the time.  It was fixed with big bucks again.  2 years later the laptop began doing the same thing, freezing up and so I went along with the extremely annoying issue.
When the Mac Book Pro came out I decided to start fresh with a new computer, with big bucks of course.  Guess what happened 2 years later as i lived in another town, took it to another Mac repair place.  They told me the Logic board was dead.  So after big bucks I replaced it, so rediculous.  And now, 2 years later it is freezing again, not only that, I can't connect to my wifi anywhere I want to in my own place with my own internet.  I have to walk to certain spots in my place so my Mac Book Pro will communicate with my router that always worked with the new Mac Book Pro since day 1.  But, after these updates Apple puts out to better the system, at some time it borked my internet connection.  Reading these boards and seeing similar problems with other Apple users and seeing there is no solution is decerning.  Then seeing a new security update from Apple about detecting virus popups and nothing addressing it's wifi issue is the last straw for me.
My wife bought a Toshiba 4 years ago and we put win7 on it when it came out since vista is disgusting.  There isn't one problem with her laptop, nothing.  And you can run still get on the internet with a laptop that runs win98.  I cant even load a page when I get on my Mac Titanium Powerbook, that has to be connected to the internet via ethernet cable becuase detecting wifi on that is something that never occured, even though it should.
I am on the fence, Mac vs PC?  Pricey vs Something that breaks less?
So why should I buy another Mac computer?

I don't think the experiences of a place where people discuss problems is necesarily an indicator of the overall populace using the product. Just as if you went to a hospital, you could not ascertain the relative overall health of everyone who is not in the hospital.
Statistically, you are probably an ideal candidate for a MBP, as it is extremely unlikely that you would have another problem of similar character. That is of course assuming that nothing you are doing is cutting short the life expectancy of your computers.
I am on my 4th MB variant, and have only had one major issue, which was handled terrifically by Apple. However, I am not entirely without worry that an electromechanical device nmade by humans can't fail. That is why I also have had AppleCare on everything.
But we differ in one great respect, I think. I figure that any computer i buy has a maximum life expectancy of 3 years. I have never used a computer longer than that, and I am routinely trading up within that time period. This time will be different though. I've only had my MBA for a little over 6 months, and It can't come any sooner that I'll move to the new one in about a month, if it nears my expectations.
Don't get me wrong, I respect the value you place on longevity. But I really think that unless your activities are especially harsh in a physical manner on your computers, then it is unlikely you will have the same experience once more. I do beleive that the current units are as good or better than anything Apple has had in their notbooks, in terms of quality.
But it is your decision,, that should be based on ALL facts and not just the experiences of those who visit a help forum.

Hello, recently i bought a Mac Book Pro- 15.4 inch- 2.4 ghz- I want to run windows on the computer as a dual boot using boot camp. I noticed that parallels has an option to sorta "steal" my curent desktop PC's information and use that as the windows part. Is there a way to do this with bootcamp so i do not need to re-purchase windows? if so please share :]. Also i dont know if this is normal or not but my tackpad (edge nearest the keyboard) seems like it doesnt have very much adhesive under it, because it starts sticking up like a sticker does when its running out of adhesive. is this something easily fixed by the genious bar, or do i need to leave it for awhile.

  • Soundproblem: Mac Book Pro with M-Audio Fast Track pro.

Powerbook: Mac Book pro 10.6.8., 2,66 Ghz, Intel Core i7, 4GB
    Interface: M-Audio: Fast track Pro
    Version 1.8.1.
I have a problem with the M-Audio Interface with the Mac-Pro via USB. It sounds as if the speaker is broken. The Powerbook works normal - via intern soundcard no problem. The Interface, too. I checked it with my Mac Pro (Mac Pro, 10.5.8, 2x 2,8 GHz Quad-Core Intel, 8GB Ram,) no problem!

No problem, you need to select an audio track and select input monitoring if you want to hear something and of course recording (the first two square buttons in the track, marked I and R) and plug your headphones into the M-Audio otherwise you won't hear anything (as mentioned above) cause that is what the m-audio is for, it replaces your computer's sound card. And unless you set up some aggregate device your computer's sound card will not work...and (nearly forgot) if you plug in your guitar in one channel you need to select a mono audio track to record otherwise it will be only on one side.
