General Error - Out of memory when viewing clips

Hi All. I have a problem.
Right, I have 720p clips, about 5-10 minutes long each, 100-150mb in size. I roughly have about 180 of these clips. Now some of the clips can be viewed, others (most) cannot. Everytime I click to view them, it brings up the error out of memory message. All clips and the project are being done on an external HD (1TB)
I've attempted to start a new project on the Mac HD, same issue (with the clips still on the external HD) and I've also tried only putting one clip in with the same error message.
How can I resolve this issue?
Cheers
Tony

Don't convert to DivX, that's not an editing codec either.

  • Multiclip Nightmare: General Error/Out of Memory when trying to match frame

I'm an assistant editor on a reality show and am fairly experienced with Final Cut Pro. But I've never seen something like this.
At our post house, we have over 30 Macs running FCP7, streaming media off a Xserve/Promise RAID SAN via Fiber channel. We create multiclips for everything (it's a reality show) and have run into some weird bugs.
What's happening is that mutliclips will all-of-a-sudden be unable to match back to the original multiclip. It gives a General Error then an Out of Memory error. Sometimes, after those errors, FCP immediately quits. When I double click the clip in the timeline, I get the same general error. I can, however, match back to the original media clip. But matching back to the multiclip causes the error.
I can't pinpoint a cause or common element. It's happening to different episodes with different editors and different project files.
Also, randomly, things will go offline for no reason. And not everything in a timeline, just some things (which makes no since). We can reconnect them quickly since the media drive never went offline in the first place. I mention this because but I'm wondering if both of these problems are common symptoms of corrupt multiclips and if there's a way to fix them. The only element that I can find linking media randomly going offline is that these multiclips had subclips embedded in them. But even that doesn't seem to be a common thread.
These timelines have been passed around from story editors to editors to AEs then back to editors, so we're thinking these multiclips might be getting corrupted through that process. I don't understand why because everything's looking at the server and all the Macs are pretty much identical.
What I began to do was recut in each clip on the editor's timeline with the original multiclip. It fixes the problem but it's beyond time consuming to say the least. Now that these errors have come up three times in different places, I'm worried we have a widespread problem and if there's a better way to fix it.
    Details:
We transcoded all the DVCPRO tapes with AJA Kona Cards to NTSC ProRes (LT) with plans to online the show once we lock
Everyone's running the latest FCP7 and Snow Leopard release

It seems that FCP is making HUGE multiclips. I'm guessing that's the source of the memory error. Some multiclips (the ones it'll let me open) are 9 hours long.
Interesting... Could be the source of your problem indeed
    And for no reason.
Are you sure there's no reason? When making multilips there's not one clip's timecode passing 00:00:00:00 for exemple? Or a small clip is also selected with a complete different Timecode? Is it black all 9 hours long? etc.
There must be something that is causing these long multiclips.
I agree with Tom (down in this thread) that sending apple feedback with as much detail as possible might be helpfull.
    [FCP feedback|http://www.apple.com/feedback/finalcutpro.html]
I would also be interested in an XML of one of the culprit clips. Not that I know answers, but looking at it might give some clue.
Please select one of the wrong multiclips (in the browser). Select File > Export > XML. (version 5, include metadata; Please also make a version 4 XML).
Send both XML to my email address (in my profile; click on my name in the left column of this post). No promises But you never know...

  • "General failure: Out of memory" when importing clip

    Hi,
I am seeing the strangest problem:
    - I add the final clip to my project, and double-click it to spawn it in the viewer. The response is a dialog box saying "General failure", and after that one saying "Out of memory". I checked all the memory settings, disk space is abundant. I restart the project (and the macpro), I re-render the clip, which comes from Camtasia, I even export it from QuickTime pro to get a NEW file with most likely no errors in it. I even switched the audio track between little- and big-endian
But this particular clip just won't work.
Any other sequence I use, do just fine. They are all exported from Camtasia Studio; a Windows screen-capture application, as Quicktime files using the animation codec.
My last suspicion is that the frame rate is slightly low. So I am forcing it up to see if that helps. God speed.
If anybody has a clue, has seen this before, please help.
    Cheer and best regards;
    Edvin

OK, so I found a solution that works, but still Id consider this a bug...
The source clip was originally at a framerate around 0.5 (it was a screendump of a powerpoint presentation, with voiceover). I forced the framerate up above 1.1 by fiddling FPS and keyframe frequency.
The first 2 seconds after import was the same; the clip does not get any Duration, In or Out values in the media browser. Then they appear after a few secs, and FCp seem tohave accepted the media file. Weird, but now at least I got over it, and I am just leaving this remark here if others come across the same: force up the playing FPS - somehow it seems to work.
    Cheers;

  • How to Solve "General Error: Out of memory"

    Hi all experts,
I have this "weird" error which I encountered for the first time.
I converted a AVCHD file from my SD card (in mts) to .mov format using clipwrap. I played the resultant .mov file using Quick Time and it plays smoothly without any problem.
Now, I imported this .mov into FInal Cut and it appears into my project panel. Then I click on this file expecting to see the video in the Viewer Window but it doesn't. Instead, an message saying "General Error: Out of Memory" appeared on the Viewer Window.
Then, I tried another method by draggin rhis file from the project panel straight into the timeline. When I put my CTI onto it in the timeline, the video appears on the Canvas window but when I press the spacebar, the movement of the video is very jerky.
Both the sequence settings on the video & sequence are matching at 1920 x 1080.
Any idea what is going on ?
    Thanks

    MartinR wrote:
Did you convert the AVCHD video to QuickTime using _Apple Intermediate Codec (AIC)?_
(.mov files are QuickTime, but the video codec inside would be H.264 if all you did in Clipwrap was convert .mts to .mov without also specifying conversion to Apple Intermediate Codec. A QT/H.264 video file would be playable in QuickTime but could not be edited in FCE. Needs to be QT/AIC.)
Suggest checking (and let us know) what your clip & sequence properties are.
    Thanks Martin.
And you are right ! The clip converted from clipwrap is QT/H.264. But how do I instruct Clipwrap to convert it to QT/AIC ?
Also, how come Final Cut classified this as an "Out of Memory" error ?
    Thanks

  • Final_cut_pro-"Error: out of memory" when rendering with hidef clips

I keep getting this notice when rendering "error: out of memory." Both my external drive and internal drive have plenty of memory; 1.8TB and 101GB respectively. It makes no difference if I am rendering at full resolution or draft. I solved it for a while by clearing out some memory on my internal harddrive,
but now it is back. What is going on. This didn't happen when I was working with regular definition clips but now I am working with high def. What to do?

Drives don't have 'memory' in this context, they are storage containers.
Check my answer to your other thread and give us more info about your rig...Hardware/Software (models/versions), how everything's connected, exact specifications of the media you're working with and sequence settings.

  • "Error: Out of Memory" when trying to Render

    Hello all,
I'm editing a project in FCP 5 that is using, in part, .mpeg-4 videos downloaded from the internet. After several weeks on the project with things going fine, the downloaded videos can no longer render. I can see them in the source window, but when laid into the sequence these downloaded videos produce an "Error: Out of Memory" message. Other videos of this type that are already rendered and playing in the existing sequence cannot be re-rendered or adjusted without producing the same Error message.
    A few things to remember...
    1. Other types of rendering, such as filters and fit to fill effects, render just fine.
    2. There is over 30 GBs on the external drive this project is running on.
    3. I've tried resetting scratch disks, transferring the project to another drive, and opening it on a new, super-fast computer, and nothing is different.
Please help, I'm really stuck in the mud here and am dying to get past this issue,
    Peace,
    Sam

Did either of you find an answer? I'm running into the S A M E issues. I feel strongly that it has to do with the quicktime update, as editing mp4's worked FINE in January.
There is a lengthy protocol for trying to circumvent this issue:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1413028&tstart=0
Didn't work for me, but I think it worked for the query. And VLC (http://www.videolan.org/) ended up being the only program I can even VIEW mp4 in now properly.
So if you can use a viewer, that works.

  • Error out of memory when opening an edited sequence

Don't know if this is any use I was attempting to open a hour long sequence in fcp
(I'm only on 6.05 but anyway....) I kept on getting an error out of memory. I did the obvious things opened a new project and put the sequence in it didn't work. Eventually I found that if you open a new sequence and drop the one that won't open into it (this will nest it) and then double click on the nested sequence it will open the original sequence without a memory issue....
Sloppy bit of code there somewhere!!!
    Justin

After updating to FCP 703 and osx 10.6.4 a lot of Memory issue has been solved.

  • General error:out of memory. what am i doing wrong?

My free agent 721.5 GB  free space, I have set my system settings all the the free agent memory. I have been working on a project with 3 sequences in them,JPEG, clips Mp4 . and had no problem playing them, editing  them. Until now....  .. my minimum auto allowable free space on scratch disk is set to default: 2047 MB when I try to open my sequence says : general error.... I click ok, then another window opens saying, out of memory. my project opens, but only one sequence opens. the others have been edited more. plus The main video will not open. what am I doing wrong?

So I have been successfully able to edit my jpeg and .Mp4 in FCP. Its the mpeg-2 that dont work on FCP. MP4-quick time player plays my files.
QuickTime player plays your mp4 files. Because it's a playback codec (and more recently, an aquisition codec). It is not an editing codec. Why? Like MPEG2 it uses a Long GOP format.
What's a Long GOP codec? Simple explanation. It is a method of storing lots of video in a small space. It does this by throwing away "redundant" information. Frame 1 is a complete image, as is frame 15, 30, 45 etc. those in between only contain information on what's different or predict what it might be (Oooh artifacting). Think of someone standing in front of a plain colored wall, waving their arm. The difference is the arm movement. Everything else is more or less the same as in frame 1.
But you want to make a cut on frame 8. Wait. Frame 8 can't exist without information from frame 1. Frame 8 needs to be independent so you can make that cut. That can only happen if you transcode the footage so that every frame is independent. Because you want to cut right there and not kind of there. Of course, trancoding to an editable format turns the couple of gigs of footage you shot into considerably more.
So far, you have been lucky. You got away with editing a few simple cuts and probably had to render. But, if you choose your editing codec wisely and set FCP up properly, you won't have to render at all. When your editing gets more complex, using layers and compositing, grit your teeth and wait or ask whatever god you pray to for mercy.
Search terms for this forum: MPEG 4 (or MP4) is not an editing codec. H.264 is not an editing codec. Why don't my mp3 audio files work in FCP?
Things to Google: Long GOP format. (If you want the techie explanation.)

  • General error out of memory

    Hi,
I've imported a video file into fcp to drop into the viewer and into the timeline.
Geeral Error pops up and the next message is Out Of Memory.
    Can anyone provide a solution.
    Thanks
    Mambo Dervish

You didn't provide much information to go on .... but generally speaking, those types of error messages are most often generated when you import a bad/corrupt file into FCP, or a file that isn't readable by FCP.
For a more specific (and more accurate) answer, please provide more information about the file; codec?  source? format? resolution? frame rate?

  • Out of memory when i render HD with many layers

I got a message error ( out of memory ) when i render HD full 1920 X 1080 in final cut pro 5 with many layers ( 6 to 9 layers ). I have 5.5 gig of memory and when is crash....1.5gig of memory is free in my activity monitor. If a buy more ram...my problem will be resolve? Please help me if anybody know about this problem.
    thank
    Yan

I am having the same problem...(out of memory on renders)
I've been watching my activity monitor and cancelling the render before I run out of memory... but I'm not getting much done and I can't do a big render at night.
I've done all the usuall things... no CMYC files. Trash Prefrences... etc..
    Two questions:
I am using Magic Bullet filters and they seem to stack up the inactive RAM. (When the incactive ram fills up that's when I get the "out of memeory") You said you saw a post about that a few days ago...Was there an answer besides changing out the filters? or can you point me towards the posting?
I'm also trying to figure out how to dump or clear the inactive RAM once I'm done with a render. I found that if I do a full restart I can clear my RAM and get a bunch of renders done before I fill up the inactive ram again. This is going to be a long project if I have to do that.
    thanks

  • "Error: Out of memory" [not able to open timeline or videos in 'Viewer']

    Hello all,
I am opening an old project from FCP 4 to Studio 1. The old system used a 'Cinewave' capture card. The new system is AJA Kona. I opened and changed timeline settings for many projects and they worked. This project the option fails. If I open a timeline this appears: "Error: Out of memory". The error also happens when I try to open video in the viewer. I noticed there are some videos in the SD 720x480 format that I am not able to open within FCP. Yet, I see them in Quicktime. I have saved the project with a new name in the current FCP format. All updates are current.
    What is the diagnosis?
    Thanks,
    Jason

    ummm....
I'll have to check that Monday. I'm actually at home. The problem is at the work computer.
I will check then and report back.
Please look if I need help then.
    Thanks,
    Jason

  • Final Cut Pro Error: 'out of memory'/'general error' on export

I'm trying to export a simple timeline from FCP but keep getting Final Cut Pro Error: 'out of memory'/'general error'. Exporting 5 sec timeline (yes, just a short trailer) via Quicktime conversion H264 at 1080. Strangely, if I export exactly same timeline at 720 its fine. Original media ProRes422 1080.
Have exported at 1080 before ok. No nested files involved; re-connected all media; no JPEGs involved; plenty of memory (all of which i have heard can be issues).
Any advice please as i've read all of the FAQs and nothing helping so far?!
Spec: New MacPro 12-core; 12 MB ram; 2TB drive; FCP7

Thanks for workflow clarity Shane, but when you export as self-contained QT movie, what do the 'Current Settings' refer to? Is this the current settings of your (source media in) timeline (ie in my case Pro Res 422) or the last settings used by the export? Apparently 'If you deselect the Recompress All Frames option and choose Current Settings from the Setting pop-up menu, Final Cut Pro simply copies frames from existing media files into the new file with no recompression.' But when i did this I got a 994.1 MB QT movie, which, when i got 'more info' told me MPEG-2 Video (?!) Apparently a compressed file when its supposed to be uncompressed (?!) When i exported manually setting to Pro Res I got 6.77 GB. Clearly uncompressed Apple ProRes 422 (HQ). Do i have to manually set settings to Pro Res to match my source media and ensure i get an uncompressed file? Im searching boards to get some clarity on this too: all references so far advise using 'current settings' but dont actually say what they are.

This is for Microsoft SQL Server, not for Oracle.
If you get "out of memory" it's not a database logfile problem but a memory problem.
