General Error When Opening A Project in FCE

I have read many threads on this.
My Config: FCE HD 3.51 / Intel Duo iMac
When I opened the project (both from FCE and double click), it would not open and I received a General Error. My projects are saved in a folder called FCE Projects in my documents folder on my iMacs hard drive.
I am able to open from my Auto Save - I moved this file to my desktop and renamed as the project copy - now I can open the project again.
HOWEVER - when I move this project off my desktop back into my FCE projects folder, I get the same General Error again. Other projects from the same folder open fine.
Any ideas?

Try repairing permissions and re-boot.

  • General error when opening FCP project file

Hi, I have searched on the forums and found similar questions, but no solution yet.
I created a project about a month ago (FCP 5.0.4) and now I need to make some additions but every time I open the file (or all of the 20 autosaved files) I get a general error message. I tried moving the media files to another folder, but I still get the general error message. I have the project file on my local drive and the scratch disk is a My Book drive (I forgot to reformat the drive so it is still Fat32). I have removed the preferences and ran disk first aid already.
All of my other projects I can open just fine.
Any suggestions? I need to add about 2 more minutes to the project which is already 18min. It took me a week to edit and I really don't want to re-edit everything.
    I am using FCP 5.0.4 on a PB G4 1.5Ghz

I don't quite understand - did you move your project files to a FAT 32 formatted HD?
If so, they're probably cooked . . . (as in wrecked)
Check to see if they're .fcp and if not, try changing one to that, then try to open it.
Search this forum for something like FAT 32 or Mac OS Extended - you may glean more accurate info from that.

  • General Error on opening several projects - even on all of the autosaves!

I am trying to open a project I was working on last week and it gives a general error upon opening. I looked at some of the previous posts about this and tried resetting preferences, opening up autosave versions (which also give the general error), and repairing permissions. I can open many other projects perfectly. Then I found that another project I was working on last week is also giving the same general error and all of its autosave versions are also giving the error. Is the file corrupt, and if so, why all of the autosave versions too? Is there any way to fix this? (I have many work hours of time invested in each project and closing deadlines!)
    Thanks in advance,
    Nathan

I found a solution! What had happened was I moved my "Music" folder from one hard drive to another and created an alias on the original disk to reference to the new location. What I did was change the name of the aliased folder and now I am able to open the project and reconnect the media to reference the new location directly instead of through the alias. Hurray!

  • Receiving General Error when opening Project file in FCP 5.04

    Hi to everyone.
I would need a little help. We have 4 Macs running (two G5 and two Laptops). All running with FCP Pro 5.04.
When I create a project on my G5 and open it with my laptop everything runs fine. When I make some edits/renders and save the project and try to open it again, I receive a General Error message.
But on the other two machines the file opens. I have used FCP rescue, trashed also manually the prefs, deleted on the G5 the Render files, made a PRAM zap, used Disk Utility, cleared the Wavecache etc. but no result. The Mediafiles are stored on a LACIE 500 GB. I do work this way since years and never had this before.
Does anybody have an idea ?Thanks in advance.

    Hi everyone,
at first thanks for the replies. I tried already the New User account. It's not working and also the Lacie is fine. The problem is more complicating, I guess.
Basically it's funny that the problem starts, when I have already worked in the project. When I set up the project (load picture and sound files all standard formats, Uncompressed picture and Aiff sound) and save the project, it opens simply, when I work in the project, edit, render etc (pluggins are on both machines identicall) and save (after deleting the render files), my machine is the only one who gives General Error.
Funny is that I used FCP since years in the same setup (Desktop-laptop) and never had this. I already trashed even the trash -:)
So I guess that this problem is a really special one, perfect for all Mac Sherlocks to solve -:)
So if anyone has an idea....
    Cheers Zolee

  • ----- GENERAL ERROR when opening PROJECT on different FCP ?? -----

Any reason why I'm getting 'general error (41)' when trying to open a client's rough cut of a project?
    I'm running fcp 5.0 on a dual G5....
Had no trouble importing digitized source material and animations from their G-RAID drive, but when I tried to open their project and review a rough cut, I get the error message.
Is it that they have a more current version of fcp?
    Anyone?
    Thanks,
    Mark

You need to be running the same or later version of FCP that your client's are running... that is the problem. You can get to 5.0.4 for free simply by running software update and downloading it. It's better software than what you're running now in any event.
If they are running FCP 5.1 or later you need to "crossgrade" to the current version of FCP. It's a bargain actually....
    http://www.apple.com/universal/crossgrade/
It's 2 years ahead of what you're running now... new features, and bug fixes all over the place.

  • "General Error" when moving older project to newer computer

I have a hobbie /"pet" project for my kids that I have been working on, mostly off, over the last couple of years. Have it up and operating on a 17" 10.4.7 system and wanted to move it to a 12" 10.4.7 for travelling ease. Everything for the project is on a portable 90G drive, and ran media manger just to be sure. But it all runs OK on the 17"-FC5 on both- when I boot the project on the 12" get the ubiquitouse "general error". Anybody have any idea where to start? Preference on the 12"? Just got a hold of FCP rescue5 but not quite sure what "backup" or "Trash" mean -but get a "settings are in place" message- SHOULD I TRASH AND RESTART THE PROJECT? THNX ALL
    17" and 12"   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

re: fcp rescue. backup takes your current preferences and backs them up. If your preferences get corrupted, you can restore them. But since it's the first time you're running fcp rescue, you need to just trash them. You will have to redo any customizing you have done. I guess you could do a backup then do a trash and if it doesn't fix the problem, you could do a restore. I usually just trash'em and redo em.
Post back if you can't solve the problem. This is just the first step. And post back if you solve it, so everyone will know how you fixed it.

  • General error when exporting to Quicktime from FCE

I've built a slideshow with still photos, text, and audio. I've done this at least 20 times. When I start exporting to Quicktime, as I want to burn a dvd in iDVD, the export stops at 27% completed and I get a "General Error". there is no explanation. I've rendered the single sequence many times and it says ok. It plays fine in FCE but won't export to Quicktime. How do I correct the problem?

I think I had the same problem that you are now having. I would get unexpected errors when trying to:
    1) Log and Transfer videos to external hard drives.
    2) Save my exports to an external Hard Drive.
    3) Copy large video files to the External Hard Drive.
Assuming that you are using an external hard drive, chances are that isn't formatted correctly. It cannot be formatted in FAT32 or else large files (usually video) over 4GB cannot transfer. It may be that the file you are trying to export is larger than 4GB. If it is currently formatted FAT32 it needs to be formatted to Mac OS Extended. Hope I was of some help.

  • Multiple errors when opening my project file. Please help!

    Hi Everyone,
I'm new to the forum and I hope someone can help me with a problem I'm having with opening a specific .aep.
My project crashed. I tried reopening it, but from then I've been getting the following error messages. While restarting my system or AE usually helps, this time the project wouldn't reopen no matter how I approached this.
    Steps I've taken so far:
    -Restarting my computer.
    -Restarting After Effects
-Importing the .aep file into AfterEffects
-Opening the file on a different computer.
-Trashing preferences and reopening the Project in AfterEffects.
-Opening one of my 5 at a 15 minute interval generated Auto-save files.
All result in the same error.
Please see attached images to see the error I'm getting.
The final message can't be clicked away and when I click the exit button at the top right of the application the application crashes and prompts me with a default windows error screen.
    Used source footage:
XDCAM files in a .xmf container
I really hope someone can help me with this problem. Our deadline was yesterday so any help would be much appreciated
    Thanks in advance,
    Lars
    Some information about my system:
After Effects CC (version 12.0) with all recent updates from the cloud as of 21th of august
    Windows 7 Professional
    Service Pack 1
    Dell Precision T3500
    Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU W3550 @ 3.07Ghz 3.07Ghz
    8 GB RAM
    64-bit operating system
Wacom Intuos 4 large pen tablet
    QuickTime 7.7.4

Solved!! I moved the two plug-ins that were giving me an error and tried to reopen the project. This time I could reopen it.
Saving the file under a different name now worked and I could continue working on the project. However the composition containing the rotoscoped footage got lost in the process. I just redid this part and rendered the rotoscoped footage as a separate RGBA quicktime to prevent the same thing from happening.
So happy 50 hours of work were still alive
Hope this helps anyone experiencing the same problem.

  • Getting "Unknown Error" when opening a project

I had the "Adobe Premiere encountered a serious issue" error come up at the end of an edit and now receive "Unknown Error" window when I try to reopen that project. I have tried deleting the .PRV files and have also tried importing the project into another project, but still receive those errors. I've also tried several restarts. Any help would be much appreciated here!
    Thanks!

    Try repairing permissions and re-boot.

  • Captivate 5: msvcr90.dll error when opening projects from CP4

    Hi,
I have a problem during a few days and I don't know how to solve it.
I'm running a SO Win XP (with SP3) and I have been using Captivate 4 without any problem for months Last week I installed Captivate 5 (I deleted CP4 from the computer - not enough space for both versions)
CP5 works fine when I open a new project on this version or opening a project .cptx file previously created with CP5. My problem appears when opening a project previously created with CP4 (file with extension .cp). The CP5 tries to update the file but suddenly an error forcing to close the CP5 appears.
The details of the error are the next:
    AppName: adobecaptivate.exe     AppVer: 5.0.2.630     ModName: msvcr90.dll
    ModVer: 9.0.30729.4148     Offset: 00030655
Other computer in the office (running Windows 7) is working correctly, without the problem I have in my win XP machine.
Any idea to try to solve it?
    Many thanks in advance. Regards.

Was there a solution to this problem as I encounter it in Captivate 5.5.0.257 when trying to edit a slide containing audio files for a captivate 5.5 project. The project can be previewed and it playes all the slides but none of the audio. If I click a slide in the filestrip which has audio Captivate will crash and show the error reporting screen. If l click on the audio in the library it will also crash captivate
The audio folder in the library has 5 items all called Narration1 with a use count fo 1 but with different sizes. even right clicking on the audio here will crash captivate. The other entries in the library don't case a crash
I have tried the project on 2 different computers but both will crash captivate if I try to select a slide with audio or use the library to try to select the audio

  • VI Server Port Error on Opening a Project

I've started seeing an error when opening an existing project in LabVIEW 8.0. The dialog immediately pops up with this message:
"The specified VI server port is already in use. the VI server for this project cannot be started."
There doesn't seem to be any problems editing and running part of the code. What is causing this? This computer is only used for development. The entire project runs on another computer. This seems to have started after I installed LabVIEW 8.2 on this development machine. This current project will not be moved to 8.2 until later this year when the final "home" for the project is upgraded to 8.2.
    Thanks for any information

    Justin,
This is the only project on this development machine. No error was generated when I tried an empty (new) project. I went into the "My Computer" properties page of the offending project and unchecked the TCP/IP option. When I clicked "OK" the properties page gave this error (verbatum):
Error 0 occurred at There was a problem applying the options from the General category. The error message is "Invoke Node in prefPage_MyComputer.vi"
This was followed with a list of "Possible reason(s)", all of which were rather cryptic. However, when I reopened the properties page to see if the change "stuck", it was unselected as you suggested. The original VI Server error is no longer being reported when reopening the project. As an aside, this computer has LabVIEW RealTime installed. Early on in the development of this project we had a realtime system attached to this computer as part of the development process. Now the realtime system is installed in the test rig with another host computer, but we are still doing some of the development on this original computer. This may explain why VI Server TCP/IP was originally selected in the project.
    Thanks!

  • Win32 exception error when opening file from RH6 in RH7

I received the following error when opening a help file
(.xpj) that was developed in RoboHelp 6 in RoboHelp 7:
An unhandled win32 exception error occurred in RoboHTML.exe
    [4692].
This occurred after receiving the notice to upgrade the
project since it was created in an older version. After selecting
Upgrade, I received a runtime error message prompt. After clicking
OK, I received the message above.
Does anyone know how to resolve this issue so that I can open
the project without any problems in RH 7?

    Thanks a lot for replying.

I have Acrobat Reader 5.1 at home and 6 at work and both work fine with the LV 7.1.1 bookshelf and help file.
Yep, I just uninstalled Adobe Reader 7.0 and installed version 6.0.1. The links now work perfectly, so evidently this is a problem with Adobe Reader 7.0. I'd still like to solve the problem, though, as I really like version 7.0. (Something has finally been done about the program's lengthy start-up time!)
You can reach the PDF-Files also by using Help>>Search the LabVIEW Bookshelf. Does this link work for you?
    It works perfectly.
    javascript:AcrobatLink('../manuals/lvuser.pdf');
This is a call to a java script function located in pdf.js.
    Other reasons:
The Active-X control of Reader 7 has a bug.
Your Internet security settings will not allow this operation. The Active-X will be loaded but will have no access to the file and yo get a wrong error message.
Fair enough. If that is indeed the case, which Internet security setting should I try changing? I haven't done anything unusual to any of those settings. And where is pdf.js located? I tried searching for it but could not find it.
    Your advice is greatly apreciated.

  • General Error when Doing Export

I'm getting a "General Error" when exporting a sequence, both as a reference QuickTime and as a self-contained QuickTime file. The process goes along until a certain percentage (73%), and then it bails, and gives this not-very-specific "General Error" message.
I've gone into the timeline and figured what I think is 73% of the timeline, and taken a look at the media at that point, which happens to be a Motion project brought into FCP as a .mov. I've pulled out the Motion project files, re-exported it out of Motion, and put the project back in.
I've also repaired permissions, run Disk Warrior, gone from 10.4.9 > 10.4.10, and up'd my QuickTime version to 7.2.0 (Pro).
    I'm using FCP 5.1.4, with Motion 2.1.2
I'm not sure what else to try, or what else to consider.

    Hi,
I am also having the same "General Error" message when i am trying to export a sequence that have the setting of HDV720p30 to a QT movie using export to Quicktime Movie>using the Current Settings on the Export tab.
This project is a concert i shot with 4 cameras. I have 4 sequences for the different camera angles and since there are three tapes, i had to line them together on each of their sequence and export them to be a self contained QT movie. I am using the export to Quicktime after right clicking on the sequence.
After that i was going to import them onto FCP Project and then multiclip edit the concert. I just love Multiclip editing.
I am able to export 1 of the 4 angles have and ran into this General Errorr Message.
I have tried making a new sequence, i have also tried using compressor but did not have the patience of waiting 10 hours to export the movie and also i didn't want to see the general error message at the end of the export so i came to ask any FCP Guru out there that can guide me. thanks.

  • There was a problem sending the command to the program when opening Microsoft Project 2010 files

When opening MS Project 2010 files from the file and print server, I receive "There was a problem sending the command to the program."  Copy the same file to my local drive and the file opens fine.  This can be repeated by several other
users.  Created a simple project file and once the size hit 1 MB, the error appeared.  The error appears on all files over 1 MB.
I am a domain admin, so it is not a rights issue.  This does not seem to be a network latency issue, the file copies extremely fast.
    Any ideas?

This message appears to be caused by Windows Explorer trying to send old-fashioned DDE messages to the Application.
Since MS Project has no "Ignore DDE messages" setting you might want to go change the compatibility settings for WinProj.EXE (and any shortcut to it) to Windows 7 or greater.  Hopefully then Windows Explorer will stop trying to send DDE messages.
Another possible culprit is older versions of the WinZip explorer extensions - I would disable them as well.
    Good luck,
       James.
