General Impressions of the X1

After a week with the X1 here are some general impressions:
Pluses:
Keyboard: Excellent. Amazing to type on. Backlit (though see comments below). Fingers don’t fight the keys. This was the overwhelming factor in not buying another MacBook Pro or iPad. Mac keyboards are just OK. And typing on the glass of an iPad is very difficult. The X1 keyboard is an absolute pleasure to type on.
Speakers: Very good. Very loud. Good quality sound.
Screen: Very good to excellent. Covered with Gorilla glass so don’t have to be careful with it. Yes it is reflective and if you are used to a matte finish it will take some time to get used to.
Wifi: Has two antennas. Reception has not been an issue to far - very solid regarding wifi. Very very pleased with reception. Posts are popping up about an issue with the sim card reader for broadband but not a road warrior and left it out of my configuration.
Battery Recharge Speed: Recharges to 80% in 30 minutes. That is the boast and it is absolutely correct. Blazingly fast when compared to anything else Ihave ever seen. Kudos to Lenovo.
i3 processor – 64 bit – Windows professional 7 with 8 gig RAM. Word is up in seconds. Amazingly fast. I have never had a 64 bit machine before and am now wondering why I procrastinated. Maybe should have gotten the i5 processor but my experience says that RAM is more important than processing speed for general tasks. I am not a gamer so the i3 might be a non-starter if you are.
Construction: Excellent. Top points. No latch. But engineered pressure keeps lid closed. Very ingenious. Well thought out. Unit arrived in perfect condition.
HD camera for conference or Skype calls: Seems OK - not as good as I was expecting.
Fingerprint Security. Neat feature. You can turn the X1 on with your fingerprint. However it does seem to have a mind of its own and lately has been rejecting my print. Seems finicky but worked well in setup and shortly after.
Could be better:
Basic Footprint: Lighter than MacBook Pro but not by much. But footprint is larger. The bezel around the screen accounts for the difference. A little disappointing as I wanted to go smaller but got a little bigger.
Time on battery: Fully charged they said I should get 5 hours with moderate use. Doubtful. Battery monitor is very good and from what I can see accurate. Gives you many options to increase time– i.e. dimming screen, turning off speakers, etc. It seems to beat my two year old MacBook Pro by about 1.5 hours on a charge. An improvement but I expected more. The quick charging though makes this almost mute.
Click Pad: Good but not great. The MacBook Pro pad is the gold standard. The X1 pad is good. But it should have been better in my opinion. Hopefully an update from Lenovo will improve its responsiveness and accuracy.
Backlight. Good but not great. The top of the keyboard is very visible. The bottom not so much. The light is not homogeneous over the entire board. It does not affect your abilities to type in the dark it is just a little odd.
Overall
I am very pleased with the X1. The engineering and construction is solid. The computer feels substantial without feeling weighty. The screen is very good. The keyboard is simply brilliant. And the recharge to 80% in 30 minutes is not a brag - it is fact which makes working on the X1 with or without a charger a complete pleasure.

Thanks for this!
How shiny is the screen? Is it very glossy, like most other notebooks, or is it somewhere between a full gloss and a matte, like some TVs? Do you find it difficult to use in an office-type environment with overhead florescent tube lighting?

  • General impressions?

    Hey,
What are people's general impression of LiveType? Stable, creative, useful tool?
    Chris

My impressions of the Livetype supplied with FCE-HD:
    1. Lot's of cool features which once you get the hang of the timing parameters can be made to do what you want.
    2. Stability: mine crashes often as I'm entering text, especially as I type way ahead of Livetype's ability to keep the canvas updated. I save often.
    3. It seems that to create a set of titles screens, you need to have text track for each one (is that really right?). By the time I get to the third or fourth track (each with the same livetype font (bar, set to repeat 4 times in 10 seconds), livetype slows to a crawl. My 60 second titles (6x10second pages) is taking several HOURS to render, can't be previewed in the canvas, etc.
This performance drawback renders Livetype fairly useless to me. Either I'm missing something, or it is just abysmally S L O W, even on my G5/2.5DP with 4GB of RAM.

it is possible to write something approaching an if..then..else statement in SQL with 'generalized' conditions in the if statement.
Attached is the query for the payment register, in which I've written a series of decode statements, one for each possible value of the payment code. The query works OK - however, its specific and as the number of paycodes expand (and they do), the report won't pick up the new paycode until the code is changed. More importantly, the report won't be correct until someone 'discovers' that a paycode is missing, which might take months.
If I were writing the equivalent of this series of decode statements in Focus, it would be something like this:
    DEFINE.......
    PAYMED/D12.2 = IF PAYMENT_CD LE 18
                   THEN PAYMENT_AMT
                   ELSE 0 ;
    PAYIND/D12.2 = IF PAYMENT_CD GE 19 AND PAYMENT_CD LE 49
                   THEN PAYMENT_AMT

    PAYEXP/D12.2 = IF PAYMENT_CD GE 70
                   THEN PAYMENT_AMT
                   ELSE 0 ;
    PAYREC/D12.2 = IF PAYMENT_CD GE 50 AND PAYMENT_CD LE 69

    FROM &INPUT_TABLES
    WHERE &SECURITYCOND
    DATE_OF_PAYMENT BETWEEN :START_DATE AND :END_DATE
    ORDER BY LOCATION_1, CPO_CHECK_NBR
As you can see, this is both much easier to write and covers the possibility of expansion of paycodes (expansions always fit in these defined ranges).
My question is, then, is it possible to write something like this in SQL and, if so, could you give me some sample code? (I'm one of those people who learn best from looking at the code as opposed to a set of instructions)

Here is one way you could do it.
Create a table that has columns like:
    Payment_code varchar2(2),
    Effective_Date Date,
    Payment_type varchar2(20),
    Expiration_Date Date)
Payment type for example could be
    I- indemnity
    M- medical
    R- recovery
    E- expenses
Let the table name for example be PAYMENT_CODE.
The select query would look like
    SELECT ACCOUNT_NAME,
    LOCATION_1,
    CLMNT_LAST_NAME,
    CLAIM_NBR,
    DATE_OF_INJURY,
    DATE_CHECK_REGISTER,
    PAYEE_NAME_1,
    PAYMENT_CD,
    SERV_OFC,
    CPO_CHECK_NBR,
    PAYMENT_FORM,
    DECODE(p.payment_type,'E',PAYMENT_AMOUNT,0) expenses,
    DECODE(p.payment_type,'I',PAYMENT_AMOUNT,0) indemnity,
    DECODE(p.payment_type,'M',PAYMENT_AMOUNT,0) Medical,
    DECODE(p.payment_type,'R',PAYMENT_AMOUNT,0) recoveries,
    DECODE(PAYMENT_FORM, 'N', PAYMENT_AMT, NULL) NONCASH
    FROM &INPUT_TABLES,
    PAYMENT_CODE P
    WHERE P.PAYMENT_CODE = SOMEINPUT_TABLE.PAYMENT_CODE
    and other conditions
The idea is to group all the payment codes into a few groups to reduce the clutter. If there is ever a change to the payment code, you could modify the table and it will be reflected in your select query.

  • How can I set up and email address for my grandson without giving him general access to the internet? email only

My grandson's school needs him to have his own email address. For some reason, his is not able to use my address. I do not want him to have general access to the internet. His older brother caused my computer to be infected with a virus in a very short time. It took three weeks and one hundred dollars to get the use of my computer back.
I do not want him to have access to the internet, but his school wants him to have an email address to communicate with him about school work. I am concerned that once he has an email address, someone (not the school) will send him a web site address in a message and he will be able to just click on it to get into the internet.

You can use an email program (e.g. Outlook Express or Windows Live or Thunderbird) and disable HTML for that email (text only mode) to access the email account. You can create a new email account if your your ISP supports it or use a online service that allows POP3 access with an email program (most popular services allow that).

  • How to create a generalized version of the detailed polygons?

How to create a generalized version of the detailed polygons?
I have a table of detailed polygons (100+ vertices) and I want to get generalized version of these polygons.
For example, assume I have a polygon with 100 vertices. Distance between vertex n and n+1 is 1.0.
I want to get geometry (generalized polygon, line or point) where distance between vertex n and n+1 is 10.0 or more (I want vertices to be considered as one vertex if distance between them is less then 10.0).
Is it possible to create generalized version of polygons on the fly?
    Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks.

    Scenario A:
If all of your polygons have no interaction among them (No polygon shares any boundary with any other ones).
In this case you can use the sdo_util.simplify in 10g to reduce the vertices in your polygons which returns new polygon geometries on the fly.
If you found that simplify is not doing exactly what you want, you can always roll out your own implementation using PL/SQL or the new SDOAPI JGeoemtry class in Java. Both will give you complete access to the coordinate arrays in a polygon and update them back to the database after you have simplified them in your code.
    Scenario B:
If your polygons share boundaries, then the above methods will not work since the simplification process may not preserve the topology among your polygons. What you can do then is to use the Java topo package to create a new topology by adding all of your polygons to to an empty topology (which you first create in the database and then load into memory using oracle.spatial.topo.TopoMap). Once you have a topology built in the memory, you can use methods such as oracle.spatial.topo.TopoMap.changeEdgeCoords() to simplify the edges of your polygons. You can then recreate the simplified polygons from the topology. This is just a rough guide; for more details you need to check out the java doc for the various packages mentioned above which are shipped with 10g spatial.

How can I retrieve my calendar events. Will Apple improve the calendar function or revert to the previous system. Even the typing function on IOS 7 is faulty - very slow to respond to the keyboard. I no longer enjoy using my iPhone. Can anyone assist. Thank you

Very strange! All of my calendar events have reappeared. This has happened one week after downloading iOS 7
The calendar however,  is not easy to use.
The typing function on the phone has  become even slower. Have to wait for each letter to show on screen.

In Firefox Options / Privacy be sure "Remember download history" is checked. To see all of the options on that panel, "Firefox will" must be set to "Use custom settings for history".
To find your OS information, on your Windows desktop, right-click the My Computer icon, choose Properties, under System on that small window is info about your OS.

  • Report "General Ledger from the Document File" - Cumulative balance

    Hi!
When I start the report "General Ledger from the Document File" (transaction S_ALR_87100205), I get a list of documents with no obvious default sort order criteria (I can see at glance that document numbers and posting dates are not sort criteria). This makes the cumulative balance column completely useles.
Since the cumulative balance is carried from one row to another, standard sorting functionality for the already produced list makes no sense.
There should be a way to affect the sort order in program <b>before</b> cumulative balance calculation, or at least to find it out.
Is there a way to acomplish this?
    Thanks!
    Regards,
    Igor

In the output control section there is a button called configure. Select a variant. Select configure. Save the sort order and report definition the way you want it. Name a new variant. Now go back and run the report with your variant.
pls assign points if helpful as a way to say thanks.

I live in China, have Dutch nationality, and no US address or Credit Card; how can I have access to products from the US iTunes store, in particular music, when such items are not available from the China iTunes store? In general, what are the differences between countries' iTunes offerings? Does one really need an address and a credit card for any country to be able to access that countries iTunes store? Why these restrictions?

    You cannot.
You cannot use another countrys itunes store.
You must be physically locates inside the borders of a country to use that countrys itunes store and a credit card issued in that country with a valid billing address in that country.
The owners of the distribution rights of movies/music/etc differ by country.  These distributors decide who can sell their content in that country.
Buy from another source if your countrys itunes store does not carry somehting that you want.

  • (261936172) Q general Where are the Web Service source files?

Q <general> Where are the source files for a Web Service created

on a different WebLogic Server? Is there a way to bundle the
Web Service project files manually to distribute them?
Is there a way to configure the directory where Workshop stores
    the files?
ANSWER: (by Adam Fitzgerald, [email protected]) The .jws files are stored
in the project folder. This can be located on a local system, although by default
they are in c:\bea\wlserver700b\sample\workshop\applications. The Web Service
structure is understood by WLS 7.0 so by archiving the appropriate folder you
can transfer the Web Service in its entirety from one deployment to another.

  • First impressions of the iPad

I played with an iPad yesterday at our local Apple Store, and my first impressions are very positive. I plan to buy one when the 3G models come out in a few weeks.
The only major disappointment for me is that the iPad OS does not support printing to local networked or shared printers. Does anyone know of a good 3rd party solution for this?
    Thanks,

    First impressions of the iPad
I'm reasonably satisfied. iPad was purchased primarily as a nightstand entertainment device for the bedroom. I use it for reading, streaming of netflix video, playback of synched TV content, and/or playing music before going to sleep at night. (Wife likes to watch TV but I usually prefer reading a chapter or two or catching up on Lost which I never watched on TV.) And, while I don't really plan to use it for and serious productive/creative work, I did invest in the iWork apps for presentations at computer group meeting and/or the creation of PDF files when away from home and visiting relatives. (Plan to take it with me today when about 15 relatives all gather for our annual Easter Meal at a local restaurant.) In any case, I am happy with my purchase.

I can't find software update in general icon in the setting, what can I do

If you have an iPad 1, the max iOS is 5.1.1. For newer iPads, the current iOS is 7.0.4. The Settings>General>Software Update only appears if you have iOS 5.0 or higher currently installed.

iOS: How to update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4623
If you are currently running an iOS lower than 5.0, connect the iPad to the computer, open iTunes. Then select the iPad under the Devices heading on the left, click on the Summary tab and then click on Check for Update.
Tip - If connected to your computer, you may need to disable your firewall and anitvirus software temporarily.  Then download and install the iOS update. Be sure and backup your iPad before the iOS update. After you update an iPad (except iPad 1) to iOS 6.x, the next update can be installed via wifi (i.e., not connected to your computer).
Tip 2 - If you're updating via wifi, place your iPad close to your router to preclude getting a corrupted download.
How to Upgrade to iOS 7
The iOS 7.0 update requires around 2.5 GB of storage space, so if your iPad is almost full, you may need to clear up some space. You can check your available space in Settings -> General -> Usage.
There are two ways to upgrade to iOS 7: You can use your Wi-Fi connection, or you can connect your iPad to your PC and update through iTunes. We'll go over each method.
    To upgrade using Wi-Fi:
Note: If your iPad's battery is under 50%, you will want to plug it into your charger while performing the update.
        1.    Go into the iPad's Settings.
        2.    Locate and tap "General" from the menu on the left.
        3.    The second option from the top is "Software Update". Tap this to move into the update settings.
        4.    Tap "Download and Install". This will start the upgrade, which will take several minutes and will reboot your iPad during the process. If the Download and Install button is grayed out, trying clearing up some space. The space required by the update is mostly temporary, so you should gain most of it back after iOS 7 is installed.
        5.    Once the update is installed, you may have to run through the initial steps of setting up your iPad again. This is to account for new features and settings.
    To upgrade using iTunes:
First, connect your iPad to your PC or Mac using the cable provided when you purchased your device. This will allow iTunes to communicate with your iPad.
You will also need the latest version of iTunes. Don't worry, you will be prompted to download the latest version when you launch iTunes. Once it installs, you may be asked to setup iCloud by logging into your iTunes account. If you have a Mac, you may be prompted on whether or not you want to enable the Find my Mac feature.
Now you are ready to begin the process:
        1.    If you upgraded iTunes earlier, go ahead and launch it. (For many, it will launch automatically when you plug in your iPad.)
        2.    Once iTunes is launched, it should automatically detect that a new version of the operating system exists and prompt you to upgrade to it. Choose Cancel. Before updating, you will want to manually sync your iPad to make sure everything is up to date.
        3.    After canceling the dialog box, iTunes should automatically sync with your iPad.
        4.    If iTunes doesn't automatically sync, you can manually do it by selecting your iPad within iTunes, clicking on the File menu and choosing Sync iPad from the list.
        5.    After your iPad has been synced to iTunes, select your iPad within iTunes. You can find it on the left side menu under Devices.
        6.    From the iPad screen, click on the Update button.
        7.    After verifying that you want to update your iPad, the process will begin. It takes a few minutes to update the operating system during which time your iPad may reboot a few times.
        8.    After updating, you may be asked a few questions when your device finally boots back up. This is to account for new settings and features.
     Cheers, Tom
