General Opinion on the Plateau of Technology

I realize this is a bit random, but I was just searching around and looking at some new programs and devices, etc. I couldn't help but realize how similar the old and new are - and the only new upgrades to them are really unnecessary. Word 2003 works just as well as 2007, which works just as well as 2011. And how many more cameras are we going to add to the iPhone until we all join hands? How can an average person use a 3.4 GHz processor in an iMac? How much larger are screens going to get until you need to sit across the room from it because it's just too large? And how many more shortcuts and features can we keep adding to iLife? How many more millimeters can we shave off of handheld devices? These are things that I couldn't help but ask myself. Have we reached a technology plateau? What's next?

I think that you are absolutely and completely right....... except for the things that you havent thought of yet

  • The value of technology

    Hiya,
    I'm new to this forum but surely not new to the world of technology and technical support.  I've been an active technologist for almost 30 years and I run servers, design sites and server applications, author software and a host of other digital services.  AND, I've both been delivering tech support and customer service as well as using other companies tech support and customer services.  I am all too aware of the value of both when making any purchase of technology or platform.
    I used to be with Verizon some years ago, parted for some time and now I'm back in larger capacity as I am now developing a mobile technology and we invested in the latest and greatest.  And with the capacity of complete data interfacing on about every level there is, smartphones and tablets are fast becoming the number one way to conduct business.  AND.... with business comes the trading of some sensitive, or at least "targeted" information.
    Today is Thanksgiving (Happy Turkey everyone!) and I was trading the usual wishes via SMS and MMS.  Typical stuff.   All of a sudden I'm getting messages from strangers (three of them by the time this was over) wondering why I'm texting THEM.   One of these callers was the phone owners DAD wondering why *I* am messaging his young daughter ??!!    What IF.... this was instead some set of account passwords.... or some adult conversation between friends that lands in a strangers phone ?   Does anyone at Verizon realize the importance of this issue ?  Or is it just me?
    So, I said to myself...  ok, it's a holiday and the circuits are busy...   it's a system glitch.  Then I visited google and typed simply "Verizon Wrong Person" and Whooooa.....   a massive number of links came back many as old as three years!!??  THREE YEARS ?  Are you guys serious?   I can understand signal FAILURES  / outrages, but even the U.S. postal service can get an address right!  Even more important, how do you expect any serious business to purchase services that are this sloppy and USE IT FOR BUSINESS ?  For ME (I manage hundreds of on line accounts and servers, etc) this is a **SERIOUS** issue of privacy/security, and I'm sure I don't stand alone.
    I have learned one consistency in working in technical venues for all these years.  That it doesn't matter HOW cool or capable a platform is, IF you don't have responsive tech people.  I'm not talking about the fine folks who answer the phones and put up with the arrogance of angry customers.  I'm talking about the people above THEM who are responsible for responding to the needs of their clients.  When I was being routed through your many phone menu systems, I heard the usual "this call might be recorded for quality purposes", but .... does anyone who matters actually HEAR any of them?  Or do the right people read this most capable forum for clues of what isn't working well?   Enter the term "Wrong person" into THIS forums search gadget and read what returns!  Why is there THREE YEARS of digital tracks all pointing to the SAME issue ?    Isn't your customers' privacy worth the effort ???
    I'm only one month into my new family contract with Verizon.  And I'm paying a considerable more per month than I'd like to be, but I live in the mountains and your company is the only service I can get in various places in MY locale.  But if my text messages keep landing in the wrong hands, I will have no choice but to break contract and use something else for my business.  I really am enjoying my new Note II and I hope I don't have to leave you, and especially over something this ridiculous.
    The above is my BUSINESS post for the day, but on a personal note, I hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving and a safe holiday season.

    Hi Suzy,
    I have a friend who goes by your nickname ;-)
    First, without trying to sound arrogant, please understand that I have been playing the cell phone game for quite a few years.  I'm an "old man", in tech years ;-)   Also, I am a technology developer / programmer and have been for almost 30  years, so the world of technology is not alien to me.
    Regarding other searches, I would generally agree with you, but for (removed) and grins, I actually WENT to google and DID those searches.  Might I suggest that you do the same, and compare the actual results.   I think you'll be at least mildly surprised.  But generally I would agree with you...  they (cell providers) ALL uhhh.... have issues.    ALL cell providers I've been with for the last 20+ years suffer from outages, dropped calls, lost messages (both voice and txt) etc etc, but NEVER before have my communications simply landed in the wrong hands.  THAT was a new experience for me.  Even Verizon itself never USED to do this the last time I was with them (5 or 6 years back).  I've EVEN used Straight Talk for a while (YIKES) and **THEY** never mis-delivered either.
    As far as passwords go?  These are only for hosting accounts, not banking.  In fact, there is a greater chance that an email will be hijacked or snooped than SMS (USUALLY) simply because there are a lot more script kiddies with PC's than access to telecom technology.
    But the bottom line here is that I can go back to Straight Talk if I want poor service, and at least I won't be paying top dollar for the privilege.  Of course I don't WISH to, but I surely won't continue to pay top dollar for poor service.  Who would?
    I'm in a "wait and see" period at this moment.  If this was a fluke...  alright then.  But if those posts I found dated back three years are any indication ... I'm gonna have a decision to make.   The difference between a cheap cell provider and a costly one SHOULD be customer service / tech support.  And if you're missing those things, then you're paying too much.  Simple (tech) business 101.
    Thanks for the dialog Suzy.

  • *My* frank opinion of the N900

    *My* opinion of the N900
    I know there are a few threads about that address this but I felt that it wouldn't be so bad to restart the conversation once in a while.
    I got my N900 a week and a half ago and am right in the middle of deciding between these 3 choices:
    - keep using the N900
    - go back to my N97 and keep the N900 in the hope that within a few weeks/months Maemo and apps will vindicate us
    - go back to the N97 and send the N900 back and wait for months until Maemo gets updated or even wait for the next Maemo device.
    Here is in summary my opinion of the N900: it's a great device/computer but it's a lousy phone. I am kind of critical of the phone below even though I really like it and really want to use it more. So please read with that in mind.
    What makes me optimistic is that all the problems I will be mentioning can and most will be fixed by software updates. We are not talking about dismal memory or scratched lenses like the N97 or wobbly sliders like the N95.
    So please be kind, here goes my N900 impressions/opinions:
    Hardware
    ++++
    - Solid build. It's huge and heavy but, surprisingly, I don't mind too much. It strikingly contrasts with N97. this is a taste thing.
    - Keyboard is great. Much better feel than N97.
    - Humongous amount of RAM (for now. Once again, aslight dig at N97)
    - Device does not fit in my Columbia khakis' phone pocket.
    - I really like the tilt flip of N97 and as such currently dislike the flat slide for N900. I'm sure this is an acquired taste.
    - I prefer the keyboard layout of N97 though the physical keyboard on N900 is better.
    - Kickstand is flimsy
    - I still think MicroSD slot should be accessible without removing battery cover. Yes, it still allows for hotswapping so that's still good.
    Maemo
    ++++
    - Multitasking is great.
    - Task List shortcut *and* effects are nice.
    - Effects in general are great.
    - I liked the desktops and widgets.
    - I *do* want my portrait mode for everything. This is a huge downer. Everything is in ladscape except the phone dialer.
    - Maemo should implement the "hold-the-key-to-get-the-alternate-character" keyboard scheme that is fairly standard on other Nokia phones.
    - On the virtual keyboard, why would the '.' not be on the same slate as the alpha? Makes no sense to have to switch to the other slate just to punctuate.
    Communications
    ++++
    - I did not think Skype integration would be that important but I love it. SIP and other networks from the dialer as well.
    - I goes and gets your contacts' profile info when you are logged in to a network (Skype, Google Talk, etc) Pretty handy.
    - eMail app does HTML. And pretty well too.
    - Need a way to easily get to the phone app from anywhere.
    - No support for network codes *#num# etc...
    - No Speed dialing
    - No sound profiles! My Nokia 6310 and SE T39 from 2001 did this! **bleep**?
    - No Skype video calling (Fring does it!)
    - eMail app should allow me to view emails in fullscreen mode.
    - The whole message notification system is not very well thought out. If I leave for some time and just unlock the phone, there is not obvious way to tell that I got any new messages. It's only when I do a task list flick that I see that a conversation has resumed. Yes, the notification light flashes but nothing obvious is on the display.
    - There is no obvious notification that I have missed calls. Same as message notification above.
    - It seems to me that the internet connection is never disconnected. Even when all I have that needs the connection is the email app to poll every 30 minutes, the internet (whether 3G or Wifi) icon never goes away. This could be a huge battery saver if optimized.
    - On the flip side, it also appears that if I just turn on the phone, it does not automatically initiate internet connections so then my email does not get refreshed unlees I remember to do it first by hand. Pretty inconvenient if you ask me.
    Music Player
    ++++
    - It's ok. Not a big critic so I am neither excited not negative about it.
    - A FM receiver on the device but no FM software? **bleep**?
    - Creating playlists is not clear. I still am sot sure how it's done after 10 days.
    Video Player
    ++++
    - Broad format support
    - No support for changing setting when watching a movie. I have some 16:9 movies that it shows at 4:3 and vice versa with no way to change. This makes it useless.
    Web Browsing
    ++++
    - Browser is very good.
    - Love the (albeit limited) gesture shortcuts. Slide from left to hover (ok this one isn't that cool or clear,) slide from right for history, spiral on the screen to zoom in or out.
    Maps and GPS
    ++++
    - GPS lock is much faster than other phones I've used. This is great in conjunction with Camera for geotagging purposes.
    - I don't know what the Maps application is doing on there. It can't do anything. Search finds almost nothing, directions are barely average and no turn-by-turn. Please at least steal or beg Google to make Google Maps for Maemo.
    Camera
    ++++
    - Pretty decent. Better than N97 in my opinion.
    - Geotagging is much faster than N97 even though it seems to tag too early so sometimes it's off because it uses the cellular info before a full GPS lock.
    - Love the 16:9 mode. I realize one can do it post in Gimp but it's still cool.
    - No Xenon flash means photos not as good as N82 in the dark.
    - Once again, same problem as with N82, when taking a portrait photo, Nokia decided to put lanyard slot on "top" of the device which makes the lanyard sometime get in the way of the shot.
    - Photo browser could be so much more.
    Applications
    ++++
    - Fennec, anyone? http://firefox.com/m
    - Obviously, I wish the Maemo catalog of apps were as big as that of Symbian apps but we'll get there, right?
    Office/Organizer
    ++++
    - PDF viewer included.
    - Pretty basic so close to useless.
    - No syncML support so can't sync with GooSync or NuevaSync.
    - I think a device of this caliber/price/power should just have office applications built-in. I don't care if it's DataViz or OpenOffice or AbiWord/Gnumeric but it's bunk that we only get a trial of Documents-to-Go. Anyone know if OpenOffice or AbiWord is coming out for Maemo soon?
    Other
    ++++
    - I am on T-Mobile so 1700 3G rocks.
    - I love doing apt-get in the command line. I am a geek!
    - This has been talked about everywhere and opinions/mileage vary but for me battery life has been dismal. As a test, I charged it up before going to bed: 9pm and by 7am it said it was half empty. All I had running was my mail checking every 30min and all my "identities" were inactive. No Wifi usage just 3G. It dies by 11am. This was after a week of cycling so that battery had a chance to be normalized.
    - Wifi also killed the battery even if it was not connected all the time. This is a known bug so it should be fixed soon.
    - For a > USD500 device, it's stupid that I don't get a full User Guide in the box.
    - Why do they insist on Ovi store. It's **bleep** for Symbian phones, it'll be **bleep** for Maemo.
    As I said, some of these are already on the Maemo bugs database, some are widely known issues and some are just personal preferences that may or may never be remedied.
    I hope it helps people who are thinking about getting the device and I am hoping that the feedback I get here will help me decide whether to return mine or not.

    So it appears that almost none of the firmware fixable items were addressed in Maemo 5/PR1.1. Out of the 23 issues I had that could be fixed via firmware (10 were either hardware or other issues that were not), only the #6 got a partial (and unofficial?) change: you can now browse the web in portrait mode by keying in ctrl+alt+o on the keyboard. Still waiting for another update I guess. I really do miss the phone, it just did not make sense to own and tie up that much money in a device I will not use as my primary phone. although the < USD450 price at Dell is very very tempting ;-)
    Still waiting, Nokia.
    For reference, below are my issues from original post.

  • If..then..else statement in SQL with 'generalized' conditions in the if sta

    it is possible to write something approaching an if..then..else statement in SQL with 'generalized' conditions in the if statement.
    Attached is the query for the payment register, in which I've written a series of decode statements, one for each possible value of the payment code. The query works OK - however, its specific and as the number of paycodes expand (and they do), the report won't pick up the new paycode until the code is changed. More importantly, the report won't be correct until someone 'discovers' that a paycode is missing, which might take months.
    If I were writing the equivalent of this series of decode statements in Focus, it would be something like this:
    DEFINE.......
    PAYMED/D12.2 = IF PAYMENT_CD LE 18
                   THEN PAYMENT_AMT
                   ELSE 0 ;
    PAYIND/D12.2 = IF PAYMENT_CD GE 19 AND PAYMENT_CD LE 49
                   THEN PAYMENT_AMT
                   ELSE 0 ;
    PAYEXP/D12.2 = IF PAYMENT_CD GE 70
                   THEN PAYMENT_AMT
                   ELSE 0 ;
    PAYREC/D12.2 = IF PAYMENT_CD GE 50 AND PAYMENT_CD LE 69
                   THEN PAYMENT_AMT
                   ELSE 0;
    END
    IN SQL/PLUS:
    SELECT ACCOUNT_NAME,
    LOCATION_1,
    CLMNT_LAST_NAME,
    CLAIM_NBR,
    DATE_OF_INJURY,
    DATE_CHECK_REGISTER,

    DECODE(PAYMENT_CD, 70, PAYMENT_AMT, 71, PAYMENT_AMT,
    72, PAYMENT_AMT, 73, PAYMENT_AMT, 74, PAYMENT_AMT,
    75, PAYMENT_AMT, 76, PAYMENT_AMT, 77, PAYMENT_AMT,

    87, PAYMENT_AMT, 88, PAYMENT_AMT, 89, PAYMENT_AMT,

    DECODE(PAYMENT_CD, 50, PAYMENT_AMT, 51, PAYMENT_AMT,
    52, PAYMENT_AMT, 53, PAYMENT_AMT, 54, PAYMENT_AMT,
    55, PAYMENT_AMT, 56, PAYMENT_AMT, 57, PAYMENT_AMT,
    58, PAYMENT_AMT, NULL) RECOVERIES,
    DECODE(PAYMENT_FORM, 'N', PAYMENT_AMT, NULL) NONCASH,
    DATE_FROM_SERVICE,
    DATE_THRU_SERVICE
    FROM &INPUT_TABLES
    WHERE &SECURITYCOND
    DATE_OF_PAYMENT BETWEEN :START_DATE AND :END_DATE
    ORDER BY LOCATION_1, CPO_CHECK_NBR
    As you can see, this is both much easier to write and covers the possibility of expansion of paycodes (expansions always fit in these defined ranges).
    My question is, then, is it possible to write something like this in SQL and, if so, could you give me some sample code? (I'm one of those people who learn best from looking at the code as opposed to a set of instructions)

    Here is one way you could do it.
    Create a table that has columns like:
    Payment_code varchar2(2),
    Effective_Date Date,
    Payment_type varchar2(20),
    Expiration_Date Date)
    Payment type for example could be
    I- indemnity
    M- medical
    R- recovery
    E- expenses
    Let the table name for example be PAYMENT_CODE.
    The select query would look like
    SELECT ACCOUNT_NAME,
    LOCATION_1,
    CLMNT_LAST_NAME,
    CLAIM_NBR,
    DATE_OF_INJURY,
    DATE_CHECK_REGISTER,
    PAYEE_NAME_1,
    PAYMENT_CD,
    SERV_OFC,
    CPO_CHECK_NBR,
    PAYMENT_FORM,
    DECODE(p.payment_type,'E',PAYMENT_AMOUNT,0) expenses,
    DECODE(p.payment_type,'I',PAYMENT_AMOUNT,0) indemnity,
    DECODE(p.payment_type,'M',PAYMENT_AMOUNT,0) Medical,
    DECODE(p.payment_type,'R',PAYMENT_AMOUNT,0) recoveries,
    DECODE(PAYMENT_FORM, 'N', PAYMENT_AMT, NULL) NONCASH
    FROM &INPUT_TABLES,
    PAYMENT_CODE P
    WHERE P.PAYMENT_CODE = SOMEINPUT_TABLE.PAYMENT_CODE
    and other conditions
    The idea is to group all the payment codes into a few groups to reduce the clutter. If there is ever a change to the payment code, you could modify the table and it will be reflected in your select query.

    I redirected iTunes to an external drive and moved my iTunes library and folder, but my hard drive is still low on space.  How can I be sure that my music is all on the external HD ONLY, especially with the new iCloud technology?  It doesn't look like I created any more space by doing this, AND I totally lost all my iTunes playlists.  I'm not sure if because I added old library materials manually if this messed up my playlists, or if the new location is just not reading my moved library.  In any case, I followed step by step instructions and found a few holes and thought I'd just "figure it out" but I guess I'm not as smart as I thought since I'm still scratching my head many hours later.
    Thanks for any support ;-)

    Quick answer if you use iTunes' default preferences settings:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Open iTunes and immediately hold down the option (alt) key (shift on Windows) so you get a prompt to select a library, then guide it to the 'iTunes Library.itl' file in the moved iTunes folder.
    If this is to a new computer and you put the copied iTunes folder in the default location of Macintosh HD > Users > *User Name* > Music  then you don't even need to start with the option key held down, iTunes will automatically look for it there.  (Make sure there isn't anything already in the iTunes folder there that you want to keep since you will be replacing it with the one you are moving.)

    My grandson's school needs him to have his own email address. For some reason, his is not able to use my address. I do not want him to have general access to the internet. His older brother caused my computer to be infected with a virus in a very short time. It took three weeks and one hundred dollars to get the use of my computer back.
    I do not want him to have access to the internet, but his school wants him to have an email address to communicate with him about school work. I am concerned that once he has an email address, someone (not the school) will send him a web site address in a message and he will be able to just click on it to get into the internet.

    You can use an email program (e.g. Outlook Express or Windows Live or Thunderbird) and disable HTML for that email (text only mode) to access the email account. You can create a new email account if your your ISP supports it or use a online service that allows POP3 access with an email program (most popular services allow that).

  • How to create a generalized version of the detailed polygons?

    How to create a generalized version of the detailed polygons?
    I have a table of detailed polygons (100+ vertices) and I want to get generalized version of these polygons.
    For example, assume I have a polygon with 100 vertices. Distance between vertex n and n+1 is 1.0.
    I want to get geometry (generalized polygon, line or point) where distance between vertex n and n+1 is 10.0 or more (I want vertices to be considered as one vertex if distance between them is less then 10.0).
    Is it possible to create generalized version of polygons on the fly?
    Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks.

    Scenario A:
    If all of your polygons have no interaction among them (No polygon shares any boundary with any other ones).
    In this case you can use the sdo_util.simplify in 10g to reduce the vertices in your polygons which returns new polygon geometries on the fly.
    If you found that simplify is not doing exactly what you want, you can always roll out your own implementation using PL/SQL or the new SDOAPI JGeoemtry class in Java. Both will give you complete access to the coordinate arrays in a polygon and update them back to the database after you have simplified them in your code.
    Scenario B:
    If your polygons share boundaries, then the above methods will not work since the simplification process may not preserve the topology among your polygons. What you can do then is to use the Java topo package to create a new topology by adding all of your polygons to to an empty topology (which you first create in the database and then load into memory using oracle.spatial.topo.TopoMap). Once you have a topology built in the memory, you can use methods such as oracle.spatial.topo.TopoMap.changeEdgeCoords() to simplify the edges of your polygons. You can then recreate the simplified polygons from the topology. This is just a rough guide; for more details you need to check out the java doc for the various packages mentioned above which are shipped with 10g spatial.

    I have downloaded IOS7 on my iPhone and all calendar events have disappeared. The general functions of the calendar have changed and are definitely not 'user friendly'. How can I retrieve my calendar events. Will Apple improve the calendar function or revert to the previous system. Even the typing function on IOS 7 is faulty - very slow to respond to the keyboard. I no longer enjoy using my iPhone. Can anyone assist. Thank you

    Very strange! All of my calendar events have reappeared. This has happened one week after downloading iOS 7
    The calendar however,  is not easy to use.
    The typing function on the phone has  become even slower. Have to wait for each letter to show on screen.

    In Firefox Options / Privacy be sure "Remember download history" is checked. To see all of the options on that panel, "Firefox will" must be set to "Use custom settings for history".
    To find your OS information, on your Windows desktop, right-click the My Computer icon, choose Properties, under System on that small window is info about your OS.

  • Report "General Ledger from the Document File" - Cumulative balance

    Hi!
    When I start the report "General Ledger from the Document File" (transaction S_ALR_87100205), I get a list of documents with no obvious default sort order criteria (I can see at glance that document numbers and posting dates are not sort criteria). This makes the cumulative balance column completely useles.
    Since the cumulative balance is carried from one row to another, standard sorting functionality for the already produced list makes no sense.
    There should be a way to affect the sort order in program <b>before</b> cumulative balance calculation, or at least to find it out.
    Is there a way to acomplish this?
    Thanks!
    Regards,
    Igor

    In the output control section there is a button called configure. Select a variant. Select configure. Save the sort order and report definition the way you want it. Name a new variant. Now go back and run the report with your variant.
    pls assign points if helpful as a way to say thanks.

    I live in China, have Dutch nationality, and no US address or Credit Card; how can I have access to products from the US iTunes store, in particular music, when such items are not available from the China iTunes store? In general, what are the differences between countries' iTunes offerings? Does one really need an address and a credit card for any country to be able to access that countries iTunes store? Why these restrictions?

    You cannot.
    You cannot use another countrys itunes store.
    You must be physically locates inside the borders of a country to use that countrys itunes store and a credit card issued in that country with a valid billing address in that country.
    The owners of the distribution rights of movies/music/etc differ by country.  These distributors decide who can sell their content in that country.
    Buy from another source if your countrys itunes store does not carry somehting that you want.

  • (261936172) Q general Where are the Web Service source files?

    Q <general> Where are the source files for a Web Service created
    with WebLogic Workshop stored? How do I deploy the Web Service
    on a different WebLogic Server? Is there a way to bundle the
    Web Service project files manually to distribute them?
    Is there a way to configure the directory where Workshop stores
    the files?
    ANSWER: (by Adam Fitzgerald, [email protected]) The .jws files are stored
    in the project folder. This can be located on a local system, although by default
    they are in c:\bea\wlserver700b\sample\workshop\applications. The Web Service
    structure is understood by WLS 7.0 so by archiving the appropriate folder you
    can transfer the Web Service in its entirety from one deployment to another.

  • What's your opinion on the search function on the NI website?

    Hi all NI web goers:
    I give 1.5 of 5 stars to NI's search function. Most of the times I got very frustrated when searhing NI's website. It returns a lot of entries for my search, but either none of them are relevant, or there are about 10 duplicate links to the same page, and multiply that by the # of unique links you get, well, you get the idea.
    So, what's your opinion on the search function offered by the NI website?
    -Joe

    Not sure what this has to do with LabVIEW. I suspect the Feedback on NI Discussion Forums might be as good as place as any. This has been brought up before:

  • Any Opinion on The app Interface

    Hai, just want to ask you guy that any opinion on the
    interface of the application that develop in oracle.
    I try to develop a web application on which the interface
    something looks like a web page that we can see in the web site.
    put some animate graphic icon, favorate link, and etc. It just
    like very similiar with the page that create by Front Page or
    Html.
    can oracle can do this type of Link ? or can oracle developer
    design the layout that similiar with homepage style?
    any other opinion on the oracle application interface ?
    null

    Hmmm...I think the App Catalog issues have pretty much been all fixed already. If you're still having problems, it's probably best to try and contact your service provider, or possibly open a new forum thread with your specific App Catalog issue. Search these forums to see if maybe someone else had a similar problem to yours, and you might be able to see what their process was to help resolve it.
    Good Luck!
