@Edsteven i am more interested in architecture fieldThat ("architecture field") is pretty broad and vague. Data architect? Systems architect? Applications? Network?
so i want to know about it from where i can learn it and how to start my career into that...and for oracle sql developer as well...and good books to prefer and if online tutorials are there which i can download.
Edited by: 923570 on Mar 27, 2012 6:25 AMI started my IT career over 30 years ago - before it was call "IT" -- as a "programmer/analys" working in COBOL on IBM big-iron. Every job/assignment/opportunity I've had since , including my complete transition to primarily DBA work, has been NOT a result of reading a book or taking a tutorial and then presenting myself as "an integrator" or "a dBA" or "a fubar wizard". They came because I never let myself be constrained by a job title. I took whatever my assigned responsibility was and made a point of working with those people with whom those responsibilities interfaced, and learned as much as I could from them about their responsibilities. As a cobol programmer, I worked with the business managers who used my systems, to learn as much about their business as I could. I worked closely with the "systems programmers" (now called 'systems administrator') to learn as much as I could about how my cobol code interfaced and interacted with the OS. When we started using client server architecture I started working closely with net admins to learn as much as I could about networking. Managers noticed that attitude and aptitude and assignments came accordingly.
The other part of that equation is that I never set out to "be" anything in IT. (What I "set out to be" was a musician. My college degree in in music education, not IT) I just took the first job opportunity that came along, did my best to become expert at it, and that meant being expert at not only the core parts of the job, but also the "border areas" as well. Life "success" wasn't/isn't defined by becoming an "analyst" or a "DBA" or an "architect". Life success resulted from having a loving wife and children, and being able to provide them with a reasonable amount of financial security.

  • General Oracle Database Performance trouble solving best practice Steps

We use  Oracle 11g DB on Windows2008R2 as web application backend DB.
We have peformance trouble in that DB.
I would like to know General Oracle Database Performance trouble solving best practice Steps.
Is there any good general best practice document for performace trouble solving in the internet ?

@Girish Sharma:  I disagree with this. Many people say things like your phrase "..first identify the root cause and then move forward" but that is not the first step. Any such technique is nothing more than looking at some report, finding a number that you don't like, and attempting to "fix" it. Some people use that supposedly funny term "compulsive tuning disorder" (first used by Gaja Krishna Vaidyanatha) to describe this approach (also advocated in this topic by @Supriyo Dey). The first step must be to determine what the problem is. Until you know that, all those reports you mentioned (which, remember, require EE plus pack licences) are useless.
@teradata0802, your best practice starts by finding the problem. Is it, for example, that the overnight batch jobs don't finish until lunchtime? A screen takes 10 seconds to refresh, and your target is one second? A report takes half an hour, but you need to run it every five minutes? Determine what business function is causing your client to lose money because it is too slow. Then investigate what it is doing, how, and why. You have to begin by focussing on the problem, not by running database-wide reports..

  • General Oracle Applications Development

I'm not new to development, but rather new to development in an Oracle 11i environment. Regarding the API's available to epand upon the ERP, how do you distinguish between public and non-public API's?
My company is developing a custom order release process. The decision is not mine to make, I simply work on the project. I need to initiate a credit check and according to any source on metalink and anything else I can find, there is no public API for initiating credit checks. However, when I explore the packages in our ERP database I find a series of API's for doing credit checks, but none of which is documented anywhere. I guess Oracle considers these non-public API's? To those of you who have been doing 11i development is it taboo to use these non-documented API's? Are these API's prone to frequent changes, hence, Oracle makes them non public to discourage use. Or is it common to use these API's? I'd appreciate anyone's input. Thanks.

If it is public is in the documentation.
If it is not public you have to look for api's in the database. It is your risk if Oracle changes the code (not very common but possible).

I am university student and want to develop my final project in Oracle. I need help from you buddies to help me choose the technology which will help me secure and find job in future. Just tell me popular technologies and available. Some of my friends told me to work on Oracle Form and Reports 10g, but I think that is an old technology.

Why did I start my reply with that quote? Because I think you are focusing on the wrong thing. You should use your university time to explore several areas, and not all of them technology. Find out what you enjoy working with - application design? Database management and optimization? Networking? Security? How about geology? Chemistry? Literature? History? Expose yourself to several things, find what you truly enjoy and get very good at it. (If you really enjoy it, you will get very good at it). Employment will follow, and will be much more enjoyable than if you just pick "a technology" because you think it will provide the best employment. Odds are you'll be doing something else within 10 years anyway ( "Life Happens").

  • Oracle Career Path Advice

    hello,
I'm working in Oracle Inventory Purchasing & Finance modules support for end users.
For example:I have modified purchasing hierarchy several times and created a new inventory organization. Also, I have developed customized reports in oracle apps for purchasing and Inventory. But, I do not have any Oracle certification. I do believe that choosing a career path and getting certified will help enahance my carrer opportunities.
can somebody advise me on which oracle courses to take and which oracle certification to go after?
    Thank you...

I believe there are lot of oil companies in Nigeria are recruiting DBA's.
All you have to do is to read the manuals and be strong in concepts.
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B14117_01/server.101/b10742/toc.htm
Also install and practice oracle at home.
    All the best.

  • Oracle career beginning

Before I start my second year of University I'm hoping to have achieved my OCA Certification. I would like to know from personal experience how you started your career with Oracle database? What I've read so far suggests a good place to start is as a Database developer.
I have recently discovered that it has been announced that the route I'm taking for my degree will have a DBA module next year which I'm pleased about!
    Many thanks
    Mike

I would suggest you start reading Oracle documents,
    http://tahiti.oracle.com/
Especially, Oracle Concept, Performance Tuning Guide. Get better understanding and grip of how things work inside Oracle.
Get out of the 'better not crash' mode as soon as possible. When you get better knowledge of the database you are managing. You will gain confident and not afraid of crashing. Because you will know what to do in the event of disaster and have a plan.
Besides just managing the database itself (backup/recovery,patch etc), try to understand the data it storing and applications it serving. That will help a lot when you do performance tuning and capacity planning.

  • Oracle career with unix scripting?

    hi
iam working in a reputed mnc with CMMi level 5 .started as fresher (BE I.T) i have around 1.6 years of experiance in unix scripting/oracle sql production support.
with learning of sql and shell scripting
i want to make my career in oracle which should be more dynamic, learning and creative not like in production support which have monotonus life.
could anyone please guide me about what career path i should choose ?
DBA , i have heard is montonous job too with same routine backups,no creativity with nightshifts and all, but it is more stable as people said. I have no experiance of it.
second devolper track in sql/pl sql having its own limitations like less demand, less financial growth etc. and people usually wants to shift in other area like BO
i don`t have any info about others areas like that i would like to explore
    1)Datawarehousing
    2)Oracle apps
    3)Business objects (BO reporting)
    4)Oracle CRM etc
5)Others (thats all i know, please add some others if they are creative )
iam really confsused now which way to chosse. and how to jump in other company on wat basis?
preparing for OCA right now but uncertain for career.
Seeking good help from forum experts.

"with learning of sql and shell scripting"
Ah, very good move, so you must pick my tool, it is all about managing Oracle DB through Korn shell http://www.smenu.org.
As of your question, the answer is in your mood and preference.
Oracle DBA: Definitely more money, less opportunity. the job is dwindling somehow due to Grid automation and budget restriction.
It is not that you don't need DBA, but manager thinks they can do without and don't (try) replace them. Pressure on DBA is a myth: more work = more money = happy DBA until wife run away.
Developer : Definitely less money, not necessary more opportunity unless you have java EE. no shift but more pressure: Projects are always in late, usually in the development area, not in the infrastructure.
One funny thing I noticed during these last 15 years, is that DBA have usually more children than others people (unix sys admin or Dev). Probably related to better earning.
DBA can be boring or passionate depending on your own knowledge, most of others DBA I know are still in the job, only one is now JAVA EE guy.

  • General oracle report development scenarios

    Hi
I need to develop oracle reports as part of my assignment .
I am looking for some report development examples or scenarios to generate reports using oracle 10g reports developer tool.
Any site or link or any info would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
    Dave

It is the tasks i am looking for that a report developer usually performsI'm not sure what you looking for. A report developer creates reports. Oracle Reports is just a tool for that task. It would be the same task as for a developer in Jasper Reports, BI Publisher, Cognos, Business Objects or any other reporting tool.
    Basically:
Based on the requirements you design a layout and see what data you need. This is just the analysis phase, no programming here yet.
For this data you create a data model (the queries). I prefer to create the queries as much as possible as database views, to keep the report itself as simple as possible.
From this data model you create the layout model.

  • A general question only regarding math and computer

Do you think the following statement that is a question?
    question 1)
A set of all strings 0's and 1's not containing 101 as a substring
it can be answered as Regular Expression, contructing a DFA or Others
I would like to find out that as a Engineer (Software/Hardward)
how he/she feels about this statement?
a question or NOT a question?

    Hi,
You can install the WWI-generation server locally on your desktop/laptop. You need the generation server if you want to have generated output for customers. For testing the layout, you don't need it.
Installing the WWI-server is well documented in the IMG-notes

  • Two suggestions regarding table columns in the Oracle database

    Oracle,
I have two suggestions to make.
First, it would be of great value to be able to add a new column at an arbitrary position in a table and not simply add it to the end of the column list. Quite frequently we have to drop and recreate tables in order to accomplish this.
Second, we often add 4 columns to the end of every table's column list (and accompanying triggers in order to keep them updated) which would seem suitable as Oracle pseudo-columns (in the same fashion as ROWID, etc.) These 4 columns would be:
    - Row created date
    - Row created by Oracle user
    - Row updated date
    - Row updated by Oracle user
    Regards,
    Dan D'Andrea
    [email protected]

    Dan,
I don't work for Oracle, but, just some thoughts/reactions to your ideas.
I don't think inserting a column in any arbitrary position is feasible, because it doesn't scale. It would require a reorganization of every block in the table. One reasonable workaround is to add the columns at the end of the table, then create a view on top of the table that has the columns in the desired order.
As to the second suggestion, yes, we do something similar, add the same 4 columns to every table. I think the reason that Oracle doesn't support these types of pseudocolummns, is the overhead this would incur. Not only in terms of the extra resources, to maintain the data, but also storage overhead.
So, just my unofficial opinion, but, I don't see how either of those suggestions would make it.
Also, FYI, if you want to officially enter an enhancement request, see Doc ID 214168.1 on MetaLink.
    Hope that helps,
    -Mark

    Raj,
can you please explain further what you want?
If you need to get the sysdate value, then use an User Defined Function with the following code,
    java.text.SimpleDateFormat dateformat =new java.text.SimpleDateFormat("yyyyMMdd");
    String sysdate =  dateformat.format(new java.util.Date());
Also, take a look at this blog,

  • Templates in oracle general ledger

In my client side they have not defined the templates but in vision i see the template defined(general ledger).can some one tell me when do we define template and what is the purpose of a template in general ledger?
    Regards
    sudharshan

    Hello.
You can create a template for entering recurring journals entries using the Desktop Integration responsibility (Web ADI product). In the template you can enter the Source, Category, Currency and the accounts to be debited and credited and upload them to GL. Next time you will just need to change the amounts and the period.
