General poor performance of my Mac mini

I have been using my mac mini for over a year, it continues to frustrate me how slow and unresponsive it can be even though I do very little with it, i.e organise photos and browse the web - usually looking for solutions to the poor performance problem!
I came a cross this app that has given me lots of information, unfortunately with my limited IT know-how there is nothing here that gives me any clues, as to the cause of the problem. I guess the red font is not good?
I'm sorry i can't be more specific about the problem other than to say that iPhoto and Safari the two programmes i use way more often than any other, keep giving me the beach ball. My internet speed is ok 25 Mbps down - 4.5 Mbps
Is there anything here that stands out as being wrong? if so any suggestions/ instructions for what I should do?
p.s. i had to quit Safari while writing this and have a report for this if it helps?
Any help much appreciated.
Problem description:
My mac is just generally very slow. I only use it to look at the internet and manage photos.

Hi Linc Davis
Thank you for taking the time to respond.
I got this information from a time when I was opening up iPhoto, and then going to the iCloud folder. To be honest it wasn't the most disastrous of events, I did get a few beachballs and when I opened up a shared folder the photos weren't loaded as normal. As I get more lengthy delays in carrying out any activities I will post back the console results.
Just as a bit more info, I don't consider my problem an update to Yosemite problem, if anything since updating performance has been improved from Mavericks.
Do you have any comments about upgrading RAM from the 4GB I have?
Should I act on any of the messages in red from the EtreCheck report?
Many Thanks
Duncan

  • Poor WiFi performance on new Mac Mini ?

My new mac mini purchased a few days ago (late 2009) was exhibiting abysmal WiFi performance on 802.11n 5Ghz. I was barely getting 1Mbyte/sec through it, despite good signal strength (-50db), and my iMac which is feet away on -58db is giving almost 18Mbyte/sec...
Anyway - after much gnashing of teeth, and even placing the mini next to my extreme basestation I gave up, then tried, out of desperation, resetting the PRAM... Fixed!
Why on earth a brand new machine should need this doing, I'm not sure, but the old Alt-Cmd-P-R at boot up, waiting for the second BONG, and then letting it continue, fixed everything, and it now zooms along as fast as my other Macs.
Just for info - hope it helps someone!

These are pings from my iMac to .02 (mbpro) and .11 macmini
the mbpro is sat right next to the mac mini... rebooting the mini sorts this out... Come on, somebody must have this problem as well?

  • Performance Issues with Mac Mini (Late 2014)

    Dear All,
We have few Mac Minis with below mentioned configuration in our organization.
    Mac Mini (Late 2014)
    Processor : 1.4GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 (Turbo Boost up to 2.7GHz) with 3MB on-chip shared L3 cache
    Storage : 500GB (5400-rpm) hard drive
    Memory : 4GB of 1600MHz LPDDR3 memory
Graphics : Intel HD Graphics 5000
Mac OS Version : 10.10.2 Yosemite
We are using these Mac Minis for iOS application development using Xcode, but now we are facing lots of performance related issues. We are sharing issue related details with you & want to get some help to improve our system performance.
    1) System is running very slow & take a lot of time to Boot.
    2) Some time it never boots & we need to press start button several time.
    3) When system goes in Sleep mode, then it takes much time to come to display screen to type Password.
    4) Sometimes the whole screen moves Downwards.
    5) Sometimes while during coding using Xcode in Simulator it shows some kind of Error “Unexpectedly quit”
    6) Xcode runs very slow & it take lots of time in switching between files.
    7) While closing any open application it take lots of time & show activity indicator for very long time.
    8) Sometimes it doesn’t support iPad when we connect it using USB cable.
Our development team is facing lots of issues using these Mac Minis, so please can anyone suggest us that how can we improve our system performance & is this configuration is ideal to run Mac OSx 10.10 Yosemite Series and to use it for iOS application development.
Please try to help us to solve these issues & try to share some valuable comments on it.
    Thanks

  • Very poor Airport reception on mac mini

I've got a 1.4Ghz Mac Mini, and it's been running very well, except for the wireless networking.
next to my 1Ghz Powerbook, it's pathetic. The Powerbook has full reception, but the Mac Mini is stuttering around 1 to 2 bars even dropping to none.
I've even tried setting up my Airport Express within 2 feet of the Mac mini and I don't get full reception. I'm using a Belkin wireless router, but I know it's fine due to the Powerbook being just fine, oh, and I have a dual 533 G4 with a wireless card in which is getting a solid 4 bars despite being stuffed under the stairs and amongst lots of boxes etc!
I'm thinking I need to take the mini back to get it checked. The reception is awful and it's driving me nuts!

    Well, I've fixed it.
I took my mini apart and found much to my dismay two things at fault.
Firstly, the antenna located at the rear of the Mini wasn't seated on it's plastic posts properly. That'll explain why the top of the mini was never flush, it had a bump and was raised up about 3mm. It also meant there was a black plastic tab that should have sat upright that was bent over, pushing the antenna upwards into the underneath of the plastic lid.
Secondly, the airport antenna wasn't connected properly, was only about half way in. Disconnected it and reconnected with a satisfying CLICK.
I put the little Mac back together and all is well, I've got a nice solid 4 bars reception. This is my first experience of a poorly constructed Apple computer.
Hope this might help someone else.
    cheers
    jake

  • Incredibly BAD airport performances on "unibody" Mac Mini

    Hi everyone,
i've been experiencing very very very BAD wi-fi performances with my "unibody" Mac Mini.
The network connection is everything but reliable, it keeps disconnecting, the signal strength keeps jumping from 1 wave to full signal and viceversa. Networking is always extremely slow even if sometimes the speed rises up to the maximum allowed; I've been downloading at 750 KB/s using transmission and suddenly the speed drops to 4-6 KB/s..watching a vid on youtube is painful and everything goes very slow and with no reliability. Often the net stops working completely and i've to disable/enable the airport card from the menu bar to make it start working again.
I've the same network configuration on my 2008 pre-unibody MBP and it works smoothly, with no issues at all, sitting right next to the Mac Mini; i've tried to turn alternatively one of the 2 computers off to check their performance separately and the Mini is the only one giving me troubles showing a completely random network speed.
I didn't test the mac mini performances in a different room, but there's just one room between the Mini and the wi-fi router.
I'm sick of it, and i want to give it back to the Apple Store Online. If the problem is the distance it means that the new antenna is much worse than the older ones.
Anyone with the same issue? Should it just be a defective airport card?
Weirdo though, considering that sometimes it goes how it should.
Oh, my iphone connects smoothly to my network, even from the parking lot, and i live at the 3rd floor.
Thanks, and sorry for my english :P

i opened the mini, and i pressed down the antenna connector through the holes of the antenna plate, from the kitchen i get top speed, now, i moved the mini back to my room, i would say 8 meters from the router, and one room in the between.
I tried the speedtest and now i get the full speed, i moved the mini to the other side of the monitor, maybe there were interferences, or some signal shields, i don't really know.
So far it looks like it's working properly.
    MAH.....that's DARK!

pages load very fast and everything seems smooth...maybe pressing it don helped!

  • Illustrator CS6 12.0.1 Winx64: Crashing regularly while scrolling, general poor performance

    Hey,
I am creating a simple reader app for Windows 8. I use very simple shapes, no appearence effects, many text styles, a few artboards and a few slices. The overall performance is very poor when scrolling around the document and dragging objects around. Changing text (typing) is also performing poorly.
Added to the poor performance, Illustrator regularly crashes when scrolling the document using the scrool bars or hand tool. It just dies with a crash report windows popping up. This happens several times a day.
I never had problems with CS5. All Mercury-run apps suffer from instability, Fireworks is dead due to out of memory... I mean, come on Adobe!

Uninstall everything again, run the cleaner tool and then reinstall. Before trying to open the applications, update all apps to their most recent version.

  • Performance of a mac mini + Cinema Display

    Hey all,
currently I use an Imac 2,0 GhZ, 2 Gig Ram , Core 1 Duo.
Actually I'm not doing much CPU intensive work, neither I plan to do so in the future. After going through some troubles with my current machine ( over the last three years, e.g. 2 x replacement of mother board ) I would like to try the mac mini.
Lately I was going into light video editing , imovie -- > i DVD --> burn --> end.
The longest thing was the DVD rendering / burning ... but this can be done, while I'm having a break, sleep whatever...
So guys and gals pls talk me into this setup and I will order by tonight
Any advice / experience made so far with similar user behaviour ?
    TQ!

CPU wise the mini is quite a bit more powerful than your imac. The integrated Nvidia GPU in the mini
is quite good too. For what you are using it for the mini is going to be just fine. Just remember to get at least 2GB of RAM.

  • Poor Flash performance on G4 mac mini

    Hi,
I've got a 1.25Ghz PPC G4 mini with 512mb running 10.4.11 that exhibits extremely poor Flash performance; jerky almost unwatchable video. I downgraded from Flash 10 to 9, and it only got slightly better, and most videos now require 10. I've heard the Flash drivers for Macs are awful; is this the problem?
Also, maybe possibly related, when I leave the computer on for awhile, the hard disk eventually, and magically, "fills up". After a restart, I have 1.55G of a 37.5G drive. When I leave it on for awhile, it'll get down to Zero KB, and become so slow that I have to restart it again, if it doesn't just crash outright? Is this a memory leak? Is the only way to cure it by wiping the HD and reinstalling the OS?

I think Boece has nailed it. Can you get more memory in your mini? I know it's a pain and the max quoted by Apple is only 1G, but I think a big part of your problem is just plain lack of memory. When the system does not have enough real memory to work with it will use virtual memory - use the hard drive as if it were memory. This really slows things down, especially when you have a hard drive that is way too full as yours is. You have very little ram to be running OS X and you've effectively blocked the system from the work around it wants to use to deal with this by having a hard drive so full. Add a resource hog like flash and the problem just gets worse. Every time I've added memory to a mac the page-outs have gone down and the system become more responsive. You have a lot of page outs. I've seen macs run all day and have zero - but that's with 4-6g ram. Still, the fewer the better. Here's a nice link to Apple's discussion of memory usage in OS X: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1342?viewlocale=en_US
Also, flash will never run great on the graphics sub-system in that unit. I have a MDD G4 1.25 with a similar graphics unit and flash isn't great on that either. But for security reasons I would never run less than the latest version of flash - it is one of the main conduits of malware these days and although I've never heard of problems on the mac it's still not good to leave gaping security holes. Hope this helps.

  • General poor performance

    Hello all,
This is a rather broad question, but one I need help with so here goes...
I'm running FCE4 w/ my MacBook Pro. I'm still in the learning process so I was trying some things like mattes, etc. When I applied a matte to a 10 second clip, I got that dropped frame message. I looked at my playback control settings and they are as follows:
    -RT Unlimited
    -Vid Quality Med
    -FrameRate Dynamic
I changed these setting around and when set to to about the lowest possible settings, I still got that dropped frame message.
Basically, I believe the performance of my machine should be able to handle this much without hiccuping this way. My hard drive has lots of room and is the 7200rpm model, 4gig ram. I'm just thinking this should behave better than this. Any ideas, anyone?
Heaven forbid I should add a second video track!
Lastly, (meaning I just remembered) I am using a WD 500gig external drive to keep footage on. I'm sure it's 5400rpm. Could this be the culprit?
    Thanks all,
    Dave

Whenever you apply any effect to a clip you'll almost always have to render it out in order to view it real-time and without dropped frames. Press Option-R to render everything out and then try viewing it again. You can also click Option-P to preview it as fast as your system will allow.
If you want to work in Unlimited RT without getting the dropped frame warning and then render at the end, you can always turn that message off.
As for the external drive, it should be a Firewire disk formatted to Mac OS Extended.

  • Optimize performance mac mini server

What is the best way to optimize performance on my Mac Mini Sever?  I recently completed mutiple video editing projects that filled both my 1tb drives (with less than 5% space remaining on each). I copy/pasted the files to an external drive after the project but my computer is now running very slow (i see the swirly lollipop thing almost every time i click a new function). Suggestions?  Is there something native to the Mac OS that I can use for cleanup?  I would rather not use 3rd party software if i can help it.
    Thanks!

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
    Reset the System Management Controller.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
Boot into Recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, and run Repair Disk.
Otherwise, take the steps below when you notice the problem.
    Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
Next, select the Disk Activity tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in and Writes out.)
    Step 2
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long.

  • Sluggish performance - Mac Mini and MBP?

I'm experiencing sluggish performance on my Mac Mini with Leopard (upgrade installation) when using the genie effect, expose, spaces, gadgets, 3d dock, etc. It's jerky, as if the animation is missing frames. Is it related to the graphics card? I also find my finder painfully slow opening folders.... Any other people experiencing this? Are there any solutions available?

Exactely the same here. I had to disable the 3D dock alltogether, admittedly not a big loss. Sluggishness seems to worsen with a 'complex' desktop picture (graphics card - texture issue?). Also, and most annoyingly, I find that text rendering seems to be much worse, e.g. look at the system menu with an all black or white desktop background. Or a SoulseeX window on top of some other (Carbon app with opacity set to 90% per default). This is a litte better if I set the display to a '2.2 Television gamma' (I have a 23" Cinema display). One thing that i will try is to boot back into 10.4 and see if it's just my imagination but I am pretty sure it's not.

  • Mac Mini almost impossible to use

Got my mac mini 1 month ago, brand new out of the box.
It runs slower than any other computer I have ever owned. We are talking many years of experience. I really want to love this computer as I do my Iphone. Went to the Apple store today and spoke with a rep. Explained some problems and the fact that it took 1 hour to download 160 photos from my camera. Asked if adding more RAM would enhance the performance. The rep explained that the mac mini was "basically the lowest end of all their products and was not user upgradable". Asked if I could return it since I needed something that functioned in a reasonable amount of time. After a few more questions, was told it "technically was user upgradable but there was a possibility that I would void my warranty." The rep then went on to explain that regardless, the mac mini should not be operating so poorly and slowly. My questions are 1. has any other persons experience similar types of issues with regards to the poor performace of their mac mini. The reason for this question is that the rep stated that he thought this was a system defect ie. I have a faulty mac.
    2. What is the honest story with regards to upgrading my "not user Upgradable" mac mini.
Why should I invest any more money if the computer is going to continue to function as poorly as it has the past month.
The rep did offer to give me a discount on "classes" to learn how to use the mac, but until it can perform more appropriately, I don't want to waste another penny.
Thanks for any advice you can offer.

+What is the honest story with regards to upgrading my "not user Upgradable" mac mini.+
Apple states that there are no user serviceable parts inside the Mini. I'm afraid there is no clear-cut answer as to what that means.
At one end, it clearly means that if you open the Mini and you break something, Apple will not honor the warranty.
On the other hand, if Apple or an authorized service provider installs new memory, the warranty will hold.
The gray area in the middle is when a competent user upgrades the memory and does a "professional" job.
Having said all that, a 1-Gig Core2Duo's speed at downloading photos should not be noticeably impacted by having only 1-Gig of RAM -- depending of course on what other activities (programs) are running during the download. More RAM is always good, but I don't think it is the direct explanation for that 1-hour download time.
I should add that this is a user-to-user support forum that is most helpful dealing with technical issues. While many of us have enough experience with Apple to provide some guidance from personal experience on Apple's policies -- the real purpose of this forum is to help with technical problems. So the more you talk about the nuts and bolts of the problems you are having in using your Mini, the more helpful we can be.

  • Installation of Yosemite 10.10.1 has severely slowed the performance of my Mac.  Takes a long time to start-up and to load any apps.  Any suggestions?

Installation of Yosemite 10.10.1 has severely slowed performance of my Mac Mini.  Tales a long time to start, and a very long time to start any apps.

Open Activity Monitor and kill this process - rapportd.
Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility and press the Continue button. After Disk Utility loads select the Macintosh HD entry from the the left side list.  Click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If Disk Utility reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit Disk Utility and return to the main menu.

    On Second thoughts...
I don't really know how well Logic Express 7 performs on the Mac Mini because I have not yet had the chance to experience the two together. Don't let that put you off the idea though! From my understanding of the system requirements printed on the Logic Express homepage, it states that a G4 or faster system is required, however Apple personally recommend a Dual G4 or G5 is recommended alongside a minimum of 512MB of Ram. This Does mean that Logic Express will run on the Mac Mini but you will most probably find it lags when moving samples in real time and rendering them onto your hard drive. If you really want to enjoy making "serious" music on the Mac then you really need to be looking at the iMac G5 or the iMac Core Duo (Intel) purely for your tempers sake. As for an Intel Mac Mini, there is no indication as to when we will be seeing one on the market and therefore you may find yourself on the fence between keeping your fixed budget and holding on a little or jumping in and getting on the right road to a digital musical life - mac style.
Maybe this will inspire your decision:

  • None mac mini user question

    Hi!!
I have an ibook and i just wanna know something about the mac mini.
On what does it go and is it a comp... i know its newb but i just can't figure out how it work. Can we plug it on an ordinary screen?
    thx for answering me

Yes, Troy is right, it is a full-fledged computer, that now with the Intel processors has become a contender in the more powerful and higher end computing market due to the increased processing speed. Performance wise, a Mac Mini Core Duo performs at/higher than the iMac G5 for Universal Application compatible with the Intel architecture.
The slogan Apple uses is BYOKDM, Bring Your On Keyboard, Display, and Mouse, which means you can use your existing keyboard, mouse and display on your Mac Mini.
It is mainly a computer used to draw in the market of iPod users with it's lower price, yet still highly customizable hardware configurations to make the Mac Mini a pretty powerful machine.
