General Question: want some suggestion or advice, I am New to OS Leopard

I am going to be switching and buying a newer computer (Mac Mini with intel on board with the new OS Leopard) I am going to be new using Leopard.
I was reading the latest issue of Macword that I had gotten in my mail. One of the short artcles' in that issue, I read that someone wasn't happy with their new os-Leopard, they had installed it on their duel-core G5. The problems they had was crashes, freezes, jumpy scrolling and slow web page loading, and sluggish application switching, and that they wanted to go back to their old OS Tiger.
This New Mac Mini with intel on board computer that I am getting will have the new OS already installed in the computer, it is a 2GHz Duo Processor with 120GB HD and a SuperDrive.
( This maybe a stupid Question, but I am a little concerned) I am new to this OS Leopard, I would like any suggestions or advice on is there a chance that I might have some of those problems on my new OS? Has anyone on this circuit had any of those problems on their new OS?
I am eager and excited to try out my new Computer and new OS but after reading that little artcle I am a little concerned that I may get that same problem.
What is your feed back or suggestion or advice?
Thanks.

Trisha, I had all those issues and more when I upgraded from 10.4.11 to Leopard, and wished badly for Tiger to be back. But since the 10.5.2 update most things have been fixed, and anyway it definitely runs better on an Intel than a G5 Mac (I have both.) Personally, I think Tiger is a more stable OS, but now the Leopard bugs are mostly minor quibbles and there is no need to hold back, Just be sure you get 10.5.2 on it or update immediately and you'll be very happy.
Enjoy!

  • I coded my very first app and wanted some opinions and advices about it and about my website

So, my first application is written in cocoa applescript. All it does is calculate the result of some formulas such as areas. I built a website to share this and more apps that will be released by me. Here's the link: http://pirapps.netii.net . For my next application I wanted to build a simple equation solver (I'm doing all this to make things easier at school) but I have no ideas on how to do it. I'm planning to do it on AppleScript or Objective-c. (Terminal-Don't want to mess with the interface right now) Could you guys give me some advices related to the logic in the program?

I suppose the easiest way for your example would be to just get the part of the string to the right of the equal sign, but depending on exactly what you are doing expression parsing can get involved.
Website design is pretty much an art form, and I'm not really an artist (my website leans a bit more to the 'industrial' side, for example).  There may be some pros here that could give a better opinion.

  • SAP CM25 which profile to use and why and some general questions

    Hi there,
I have a few general questions, if you may share your thoughts on this.
In a manufacturing environment, is CM25 more used to finite schedule the work centers or labor or both ?
Is it a good idea to even finite schedule the planned orders or just production orders ? We want to create production orders 1 week ahead of the production schedule and planned orders gets created 3-4 weeks earlier than production order gets created.
The graphical tool seems to be slow sometimes when dispatching and doing some actions on the screen, has any one have any say on this. Should we need to have better computers on the floor for this to work ?
I have been trying my solutions using CM25 and not CM21 or CM27 using the profile SAPSFCG005, is there any other profile that I need to consider and other transactions to consider like CM21 or CM27 for certain purposes?
    Thank you

    Hello
In a manufacturing environment, is CM25 more used to finite schedule the work centers or labor or both ?
It can be used for both depend upon bottle neck resource whether machine or labour.
Is it a good idea to even finite schedule the planned orders or just production orders ? We want to create production orders 1 week ahead of the production schedule and planned orders gets created 3-4 weeks earlier than production order gets created.
Better it should be finite planning for planned order also you can use MRP with lead time scheduling.
The graphical tool seems to be slow sometimes when dispatching and doing some actions on the screen, has any one have any say on this. Should we need to have better computers on the floor for this to work ?
It depends upon the data load and selection,
Restrict the number of objects to be displayed, for example, select only a small number of work-centers/orders.
Customize the time profile (transaction OPD2) such that the database read period, the planning period and the evaluation period are as small as possible. As a result, fewer objects are read and displayed.
Refer KBA  2038780 - Tips for performance improvement on Capacity Leveling
If you want to process more orders, check whether a batch planning (planning in the background on transaction CM40) is possible.
I have been trying my solutions using CM25 and not CM21 or CM27 using the profile SAPSFCG005, is there any other profile that I need to consider and other transactions to consider like CM21 or CM27 for certain purposes?
It depends upon your requirements which transaction to use and which profile. You can customize your own profile also.

Based on the information that you have supplied, you have a Early or Late 2008 MBP.  Maximum RAM that it will accept is 6 GB with the following specifications:   200-pin PC2-5300 (667MHz) DDR2 SO-DIMM.
The best sources for Mac compatible RAM are OWC and Crucial.
    Ciao.

You are sure that you have a rescue email address, and not an alternate email address ? They are different addressess and settings.

  • Would love some advice on a new purchase . . .

I want to buy a new laptop. I currently have a 2001 PowerPC G4. 500MHz with 640 RAM. I'd love some advice on a new purchase. Sorry if this gets long-winded.
    These are my desires:
    (1) A serious upgrade in speed, into the Giga world. I work for a law firm, and I do a lot of research. Lexis-nexis seems to put a serious strain on my G4. I see some of the new models are over 2 gigs. I've read that 2 gigs is not 4x faster than 500Mhz, in the linear sense. Will going from 500 to 2 gigs nevertheless be substantially noticeable.
    (2) More memory. In the near future, my employer is going to give its attorneys outside access to our email system and hard drive files. It would seem to me that I'll need to clear as much memory to make room for that. It look like most of the new models have a max space of 2 Ghz. That's more than 3 times the space i currently have. I'd like to think more memory will make my OS run more smoothly. If that's true, I wouldn't mind spending more money to get the biggest memory chip.
    (3) I do a lot of word processing. I grew up on Macs (California girl), but I gave up on AppleWorks a couple years ago. I hated it. I purchased Word:Mac and have been very happy with it. Nevertheless, Word:Mac slows me down. Again, that seems to be consistent with the whole need for more speed and memory.
    (4) I want wireless connectivity. I assume new Macs come with this capability (Airport?), but I'm not sure if I'll need an upgrade during the buying process. And I really have no idea how buying the airport hardware/software impacts my need what I have to but from my ISP (my cable company).
    (5) The 15 inch seems like a nicer upgrade; 17 would be nicer, but I don't need it.
    (6) I really don't want to spend more than $2500.00. But I'll spend a little more if it makes sense.
    (7) Protection. I've read that Tiger is substantially safer than other OS's. That said, if someone could infect/corrupt/whatever my files (or access client files), that would be a disaster. I've read that Norton slows your down and is unecessary with Tiger.
There's a lot of pretty cool things Mac offers that I DON'T use. Like making movies or the isight stuff. I'm mainly a girl who is either writing, researching, emailing, or reading stuff online.
I'd love some advice. Some of the stuff I've read online has left me with too many questions.
    Thanks!
    Lindsay

    (1) Comparing clock speeds isn't a good way to compare processors. That said, because of various architecture changes, the MBP is probably a solid 8-10 times faster than your G4 system.
    (2) Definately max out the RAM. My advice is to get the stock, single 1GB stick from Apple, and then head over to Crucial and buy yourself another stick. It's fairly easy to install, and Apple gives you a step by step guide on the MBP manual. You could have Apple pop in another stick, but it'll cost you more than double what you'll pay by going with Crucial ($300 vs. $135)
    (3) Office:Mac will work just fine on your MBP. It might be a little slow to open when you first boot up (6, 7, 8 bounces on the dock), but after that everything starts right up. It should make too much of a difference, but since Office is running through emulation the 2GB will help.
    (4) The wirless in an MBP is the same as in every other computer: 802.11B/G compatible. It'll work with any router out there; no need to go out and buy an AirPort router from Apple if you already have one. Then again, at $200, I don't know that I'd ever buy an AirPort. A plain old Linksys for $50 should work just fine...assuming you even need a router.
    (5) You said it. The 15" is nice, but the 17" is nicer. The 17" has a few other goodies (a few extra USB ports, a FireWire800 port, an extra FireWire400 port), but unless you have a ton of devices you're plugging in, or an external hard drive you're constantly reading from/writing to, they're a non-factor. If you wanna save some money, go with the 15"; if you wanna live a little, the 17".
    (6) On the laptop itself, that shouldn't be a problem. You can get yourself a nice 15" with AppleCare for right around what you're looking to spend. Of course, depending on what addons and software you get (MS Office, a bag, mouse, etc.), you're probably looking at closer to $3000.
    (7) You hit it right on the head. There's really not much you need to do. Turn on the firewall built into OS X; make sure your router is secure (MAC address filtering, strong pass code, WPA2 encryption); and make sure you change your passwords every so often (every month or two should be more than sufficient). While it's not entirely necessary, based on your line of work it, it would probably be wise to get yourself an external hard drive (HDD) onto which you can backup your files. A MyBook from Western Digital wouldn't be a bad idea. If you go with the 17", get the Pro edition for higher speeds with FireWire 800. If you go with the 15", get the Premium. And, to save some money, buy through Amazon.com
Some suggestions on what you should get to compliment your MBP:
The first is a nice bag to carry it in. I personally like Marware's black italian leather CEO Milano. But if you're not into leather or don't want to spend that kind of money (why money would be a problem when buying a $3000 computer, I don't know...), then check out Brenthaven. They have some quality bags with plenty of storage for all your gadgets and whatnot.
The second thing you needs is AppleCare. While I personally find it ridiculous that a person who just bought a $3000 computer doesn't get at least a years worth of tech support, AppleCare is well worth the money. It extends your tech over the phone tech support from 90 days to 3 years and your warranty from 1 year to 3.
Apple's tech support is second to none (and they actually speak english ), and the extended warranty is a must. The best part of all is being able to take your computer to the Genius Bar in an Apple store. There's nothing quite like being able to walk into a store and have a living, breathing person help you. No crappy music while your put on hold, no having follow directions over a phone... you just give your Mac to a genius and let them do all the work.
If for whatever reason you're unsure about getting AppleCare, you don't have to buy it right now. So long as you buy it and register your MBP within the initial warranty period (1 year), you're all set. So, feel free to try out AppleCare under your current warranty before you drop $300 or so on the extended AppleCare.
The final thing that I recommend you buy, especially if you plan on having this baby on your lap, is a cooler. That is, a laptop tray with fans to provide some extra cooling capacity. Your MBP (or any other laptop/portable, for that matter) sits on top of, or attaches to, the cooler and provides power to the fans via USB cable. I don't know that you'll be getting any burns if you use this thing on your lap without a cooler (or any kind of tray, for that matter), but it certainly isn't comfortable.
As for particular brands/models, I can't really give you one. These things are put out by a lot of smaller companies, and come in so many different variations that it's hard to keep track of. For example, the website I bought mine from no longer exists and I've yet to see anything else that quite resembles what I have. That's not to say these things aren't quality, but don't go looking for something from a name brand company. All I can say to do is search on Google or Froogle for laptop cooler. On the bright side, you'll find plenty of coolers to choose from and you'll have something totally unique.
Well, that covers the three musts. There other various things that you may or may not like...maybe a Marware protection pack or a mouse...but it's really a matter of preference from here on out. Personally, the only other thing I'm getting is a mouse. I've never been a fan of trackpads. I much prefer using a mouse, especially if I'm at a desk writing a paper or doing research. But that's just me...
Anyway, I hope this helps. Good luck, and enjoy your MBP!

  • HDD Upgrade on a Late 2006 Mini - Some Pre Op advice please!

    Hi there
I'm looking to update the HDD in my Mac Mini (Model MA608LL/A) and would like a bit of advice and to ask a few questions on whether the drives I'm looking at are suitable.
The drives i'm looking at are:
    Hitachi Travelstar 7K500 250GB 2.5" SATAII 7200rpm 16MB Cache / Hitachi Travelstar 5K500 250GB 2.5" SATAII 5400rpm 8MB Cache
    Seagate ST9250315AS 250GB 2.5" Hard Drive SATAII 5400rpm 8MB Cache / Seagate ST9250410AS 250GB 2.5" Hard Drive SATAII 7200rpm 16MB Cache
Firstly my concerns are regarding the cache on the drive would the Mac Mini benefit from the having a 16mb cache? The original drive has a 8mb cache on it? Also one of the dives is a 7200rpm drive will the SATA controller on the MIni allow it to run at full speed or will the drive just run at 5400?
Secondly are there any unexpected things I need to know regarding changing the drive? I've built literally hundreds of desktop PC's (I work as a IT Tech at my local high school) and I have successfully taken apart a couple of mini's before to install new RAM so I feel quite confident in my ability to physically do the swap however it's always good to get some advice from people who are more experienced and have actually done this job. Are there any other sensors / cabling that would not need to be considered on a normal HDD swap on a PC? Also are there any specialist tools (other than putty knives!) I would need?
Any advice / warnings will be greatly appreciated.
    Cheers
    John

More cache on the drive will always be a good idea. The 7200 rpm drives are also a better idea. Neither of these things are effected by the SATA controller in the mini. The controller only asks the drive for data, and the drive itself uses the larger cache and faster rotational speed to hand over that data faster. The only issue that would arise is heat, and many people have upgraded to 7200 rpm drives without any serious issues.
If you want some good visual guides to help you with the upgrade, there are free videos on OWC's website:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/installvideos/macmini_06-08_mem_hdopt/
And a very nicely illustrated guide on iFixit.com:
    http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Repair/Installing-Mac-mini-Model-A1176-Hard-Drive/11 08/1
There are some things to be careful of with respect to cables and drive temperature sensors which will be more obvious and easier to understand by using those visual resources.

  • Report Builder Question - OA AR Aging - and a general question

I'm sure this is the wrong forum for this question, but I thought there might be someone here who might be using Oracle Applications and Report Builder who'd be kind enough to help me out.
We've recently implemented Oracle Applications 11.5.10 and I have to use report builder to change the Accounts Receiveable Aging (7 bucket) to a 5 bucket report. I've already made some changes to the seeded "ARXAGMW.rdf" report, but I'm not a big Oracle Reports guy. I've stumbled through making some changes in various other reports. But this one is just plain nasty! :)
I was thinking that I could simply add buckets 6 & 7 to bucket 5, then just hide or delete the 6 & 7 buckets. But I'm not sure where to even start. Any help with this would GUARANTEE a Christmas or other holiday card this year! :)
I really want to keep this simple as possible, so any help would be very....helpful. :)
Oh, my general question is: Are there any resouces/books for Oracle Reports (Report Builder)? I feel so lost trying to modify existing reports, let alone creating new ones.
    Thanks again!

    Hi Steve,
I am working on the 7-bucket aging report and i want to add a new field in data model.
As the query is build dynamically, i have modified the function BUILD_CUSTOMER_SELECT to meet my requirements.

  • Communicating with modem-please give some suggestions

    Hi Every one....
We r having a real time system now and we r looking for a better idea for the same.
The real time system is developed using VB and now thinking of changing to labview.
The current system is ......Data from RTU is sent to serial device(modem) and VB application checks the modem
every 10 second and any new data found it inserts into relevant tables in the database and after insertion to the
database the data is fetched from the database for real time display. So in the real time dipay is getting delayed.
ie, a record that is newly obtained is displayed in the real time display after several minutes only.
Think the display is delayed because of the fact that its getting displayed after inserting the data into the database
and then reading the data from the database.
What is the better idea to reduce the delay in display?I thought if v check the modem every 10 second and if new data got, fetch the data ,decode it ,display the information and then insert into the database, the system will be better. But if a single check of modem can give any number of messages which contain data.If v get 10 messages v have to decode 10 messages display 10 records and then insert 10 records into the database. Is there any better way for this?
I havent worked with serial communication applications.I havent thought abt the coding side now.Just thinking of theoverall idea only.
Thanks in advance for the suggestions.

    Hi,
Thank you so much for your reply sir.
Actually my question is related to modem communication .But sorry, in the first post i asked to know
whether my idea is correct or not.
In Our real time system,RTU send message to modem at any time.
So as in the previous post ,after decoding the data  v can display the data ad then can insert into proper table.
And nw i have to also add a module to store the data in a txt file also, sfter fetching the data frm the modem.
ie,as suggested by u i want to check the modem when data arrives at the modem(instead of checking 10second or something)
and i want just to append it to a string until i get one complete message.ie,i have to check for the end delimiter(which is carriage return in our system)and when i get the end delimiter from the modem,i have to write the entire string into the text file.As RTU send the data to modem it may be sending a part of a message or more than one message ....
I want my entire code to be executed only when data arrives at the modem.ie,rather than putting all the code in a while loop i want some other method the code will be executed only when there is data in the serial port.Just like event structure in which certain code is executed only when an event happens(for example code inside a time out event will be executed only when the time out occurs.it is free from loop also). Is it possible to code like that?
I just coded using bytes at serial port and putting the code inside a loop. Now my PC is not connected to modem.so i havent checked my idea is working or not.
I want to code using VISA events.I tried to code. But i think  it is not correct..The out put of VISA wait for event's status i am not sure.
I thought if the status is true it indicates the event occured. Can u help me regarding this?
I am herewith attaching my idea.I have put both methods in the same VI.Sorry for the inconvenience because of the bugs in the code.
    Thanks once again....

  • Where to direct a general questions about foreign films subtitles?

I recently purchased a foreign film "Break Ke Badd" from the iTunes store. Although, it didn't specify that it had English subtitles, I assumed it did. After the full download, I tried to watch it and there weren't any English subs. I contacted iTunes and they more than happy to refund the money back to my account. Now after a few weeks, the iTunes store DOES list Eng subs for this film. I don't want to purchase it again and have to contact iTunes for another refund...Therefore my question is, is there a general question contact one could use to find an answer to my question. Basically, to verify that this movie, indeed has English subs before I re-purchase.
    Any info is appreciated!

Yes I know as the [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/ Questions] section is more for desktop Firefox support and the place I linked to is for "Firefox OS" support in English where some who are involved with it do post in it occasionally.
I would have moved that [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/962783 thread] to the "Firefox OS" English section, however I cannot as the [https://support.mozilla.org//questions/ Questions] and [https://support.mozilla.org/forums Contributor Forums] are not the same.

The decision of whether to use CLDC or CDC is made for you by the device you are programming for. If you want to write an application for a particular smartphone then you have to find out what configuration it is running and as far as I know all smartphones (no matter how powerful) will be running CLDC. The CDC is aimed at things like set-top boxes for televisions and other such devices that run from mains power for example.
Within CLDC there are 2 versions, 1.0 and 1.1 and again the choice of which one to use comes from the device you are aiming for. The same for MIDP, which has version 1.0 and 2.0. As an example I am developing an application for a Nokia N95 and I know from the phone documentation that it is running CLDC 1.1 and MIDP 2.0.
I've never looked at CDC to be able to tell you the differences but if you are starting development of a mobile phone application then you will want to look at CLDC/MIDP and you should never have to worry about getting it to work on a CDC emulator because you will never need to do that.

  • I have a handful of general questions about Firefox OS as a consumer..

I couldn't find a better place to post this, so I'm trying on here.
I'm in the market for a tablet (high-end), and I'm holding off on getting an Android-powered one because of Firefox OS. However, I have some general questions and concerns regarding performance, software and hardware. Here they are.
    1. Is the Firefox OS interface as responsive as a native experience on say an iPad or an Android tablet? (Is there any lag on swipes between screens, button presses, etc?) If not, will it be in the future?
    2. Will I miss the Android marketplace or the Apple app store, being restricted to only HTML5 apps? Do you think this will become an irrelevant question as the HTML5 app ecosystem grows?
    3. Do you think the quality of HTML5 apps will be inferior to those from existing app stores because they are free?
    4. Will the Firefox browser be the only one available in Firefox OS? (i.e. will there be the option to use Chrome, Opera or any other browser if the user so wishes?)
    5. Will Firefox OS include useful utility apps, such as an alarm clock, a calendar, a weather app, etc?
    6. I read a lot, both on the web (news, video game reviews), as well as ebooks. Will Firefox OS on a tablet be a pleasant experience conducive to e-reading? (Will it include a good ebook reader app?)
    7. Will there be a high-end Firefox OS tablet that is comparable in specs to the Nexus 10? (i.e. impressive screen resolution, powerful CPU/GPU, lots of inputs/outputs like USB, HDMI, microSD, etc) When do you think such a device might become available?
    8. Would it be possible to flash Firefox OS onto say a Nexus 10 or other tablet or phone if one wanted to use it as their OS instead?
    Thanks!

    1. Depends on the phone but a avererage power android phone would likely cost the same as a high end firefox os phone.
    2. HTML 5 is really the future of the web, I've heard that Firefox will let you package apps to be playable offline, but not sure if thats true.
    3. I '''think''' Firefox OS may have paid apps that will be restricted to users who buy them.
    4. I think Mozilla will be nice enough to let Google and Opera make browsers. Google let Mozilla do that with FF for android.
    5. See the simulator https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/firefox/addon/firefox-os-simulator/
    6. too early to say
    7. too early to say, but Foxconn (helps apple) makes some apple products, so yes in the future is see a high end Firefox OS tablet 2-3 years down the road.
    8. not sure
NOTE: Please note that we are only contributors, we dont develop firefox os.
You can ask more on the IRC channel as there are likely devs there.

  • Intercompany Transaction Module - General Questions

I do not have any real experience in using the Intercompany Transaction Module and have some general questions relating to the applicability of deploying this module at my site...
The underlying GL systems capture Intercompany balances - but not the ICP entity detail. Therefore for each ICP Account the Trial Balance load into HFM (via FDM) will load the ICP Account balances to the [ICP None] member. We were originally going to provide a form through which these balances could be cleared from [ICP None] to the valid ICP members.
However, a need to load multi-currency transactions has emerged putting the Intercompany Transaction Module under consideration.
Not sure how the use of this module would work alongside the balances already loaded in the GL Trial Balance? Does this module merely allocate the existing balances or would we need to write a rule to reverse out of [ICP None] the values loaded via transaction to ICP Entities?
    Any advice will be appreciated

By default, [ICP None] and [ICP Entities] will aggregate to [ICP Top],but there is one application setting: ICPEntitiesAggregationWeight
this setting Specifies the percentage of intercompany partner entity [ICP Entities] amounts that aggregate to the [ICP Top] member of the Value dimension. By default, the value is 1, you can specify it to be 0, and using validation to make sure [ICP Entities] =[ICP None], then [ICP Top] will only =[ICP None] and will not double count.
