General Rule on manipulating ViewObjects inside backing bean

I've read in some articles and thread posts by that it is not advisable to manipulate ViewObjects inside a backin bean?
Are there any exceptions to this rule?
I have scenario where in my ViewObject is initially created and set to a MaxFetchSize(0) so that on the initial page load, I will just create a new blank row and BC4J will not query any data. However, there is also Search/Find buttons on the same page/viewobject that will query the database. So i will need to edit MaxFetchSize to a positive number so only then, data is queried from the DB. I put it in a backing bean method:
public String find() {
OperationBinding ob = (OperationBinding)bindings.get("Execute");
ViewObject vo = iteratorBinding.getViewObject();
vo.setMaxFetchSize(10);
ob.execute();
}So in effect, I manipulated the ViewObject inside the backing bean. Can this be considered an exception to the rule or best practice?
regards,
Anton

Anton,
you can call that method without writing a custom method in the VO. Just add an entry like this to your page def:
<methodAction IterBinding="SomeView1Iterator" id="setMaxFetchSize" MethodName="setMaxFetchSize"
                  RequiresUpdateModel="true" Action="999" IsViewObjectMethod="true" DataControl="AppModuleDataControl"
                  InstanceName="AppModuleDataControl.SomeView1">
      <NamedData NDName="val" NDValue="10" NDType="int"/>
    </methodAction>and in your backing bean:
    public String setMaxFetchSize_action() {
         FacesContext fc = FacesContext.getCurrentInstance();
         ValueBinding vb = fc.getApplication().createValueBinding("#{bindings}");
         DCBindingContainer dc = (DCBindingContainer) vb.getValue(fc);
         OperationBinding operationBinding = dc.getOperationBinding("setMaxFetchSize");
         operationBinding.execute();
         if (operationBinding.getErrors().isEmpty()){
             System.out.println("operation successful");
         else
             System.out.println("operation failed");
        return null;
    }no need to write and expose a VO client method.

  • Commit inside backing bean

    Hi,
    I have a submit button in a page. In the action, I gave the page flow that redirects to another page and in the action listerner, I gave the method that it needs to execute. In the method, I am doing some insert rows into a viewObject and I need to do a AM Commit. How to do that? If I drag the commit button into this submit button, the action gets changes to commit.execute. How to do the AM Commit in the backing bean?
    Thanks
    Saru

    Here's how I did it.
    1) Create the commit operation in your data binding. Bind to your AM.
    2) In your backing bean lookup the OperationBinding. (I used the ADFUtil.java from the StoreFrontModule example code for this.)
    OperationBinding commitOperation = ADFUtils.findOperation("Commit");
    3) Then just do:
    commitOperation.execute();

  • ADF BC + ADF Faces: How can consult a ViewObject in a backing bean.

    Hello comunity i'm new in ADF tecnology, need to consult a VO in a backing bean code, but these are not instances in page definition.
    Thanks Comunity.

    Hi Peter you can consult your aplication module and all VO including inside using these code:
    String amDef = "model.AppModuleImpl";
    String config = "AppModuleLocal";
    String retorno = "";
    ApplicationModule am = Configuration.createRootApplicationModule(amDef,config);
    ViewObject myVO = am.findViewObject("YourVO");
    Then you can filter your VO if you need
    myVO.setWhereClause("id = : 0");
    myVO.setWhereClauseParam(0, var);
    myVO.executeQuery();
    And iterate by the results
    while (myVO.hasNext()) {
    myVO.next();
    Row myRow = myVO.getCurrentRow();
    Number id= (Number)myRow .getAttribute("Id");

  • Applying viewcriteria inside the backing bean

    Hi Experts,
    Currently i am building one table based on the View object. In that view object i have an attribute which returns true or false.
    My requirement in the page i need to have a check box and if the user selects the check box then i need to show the records where the attribute is true. In case of check box deselection then i need to show all the entries (please note not the entries where the attribute value is false)
    So i have created one view criteria in the view object and handled the checked box selection inside my backing bean. However it seems the criteria is not apply to the model. Any idea? or any other way i can implement this.
    Apart from this i tried the checked box inside the column filter facet. However the issue is if check box is selected then that filters only true entries. deselected then the false entries. If i use the drop down list then i can implement my requirement without any issue.

    here the code segment
    DepartmentVOImpl securityCompVO =
    (DepartmentVOImpl )findDataControl("ManageDepartmentAMDataControl").getApplicationModule().findViewObject("DepartmentVO1");
    if (selected) {
    //Apply the criteria
    ViewCriteria criteria =
    departmentVO.getViewCriteriaManager().getViewCriteria("DepartmentVOCriteria");
    criteria.setProperty(ViewCriteriaHints.CRITERIA_AUTO_EXECUTE, Boolean.TRUE);
    departmentVO.applyViewCriteria(criteria);
    departmentVO.executeQuery();
    } else {
    //remove the criteria
    departmentVO.removeApplyViewCriteriaName("DepartmentVOCriteria");
    departmentVO.executeQuery();
    Util.refreshComponent(richTable);

    User,
    I would personally not like this code.
    You should not get access to the AM in the view layer.
    What i would advice you to do is from your backing bean call an AM service method passing the checkbox value (selected or not) . In the Service method get access to the VO and then apply the viewcritera using VO.setApplyViewCriteria() and finally reexecute the VO.

  • Build a ui component from the backing bean 2

    This is a related question to one I just posted:
    So, I'm trying to build ui components programmatically. In particular, I'm tyring to build af:selectBooleanCheckBox(es), using af:foreach loop. However, to know how many to output I need some information from the database. I query the database in the application module and build an array from the resulting query. I return this array from my method. Now in my backing bean, I want to invoke this method so I can get the array. I'll use tihs array in my jsp page to output the UI component. When I try to instantiate the function in the constructor of my backing bean, I get an error. So I'm planning to use invokeAction to run my method automatically on page load. However, if I do this, how do I get back my array? Where is it stored?
    Also, is it possible to make my array available to my jsp page without going through my backing bean?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi, it would help if you tell us the jdev version you are using. I assume you use adf rich faces?
    As a general rule, you can't put this kind of code in the constructor.
    I would use a bounded task flow and put call a bean method as default task inside it.

  • How to call backing bean method when user tabs out of af:inputListOfValues field

    Hi,
    I am using jdev 11.1.2.4.
    I want to call a backing bean method based on the value selected in the af:inputListOfValues field.
    The requirement is similar as Frank Nimphius-Oracle has demonstrated here  https://blogs.oracle.com/jdevotnharvest/entry/how_to_notify_the_server but with Input List of Values component.
    The fields I want to call method from is
    <af:inputListOfValues id="appealNameId"
                          popupTitle="Search and Select: #{bindings.AppealName.hints.label}"
                          value="#{bindings.AppealName.inputValue}"
                          label="#{bindings.AppealName.hints.label}"
                          model="#{bindings.AppealName.listOfValuesModel}"
                          required="#{bindings.AppealName.hints.mandatory}"
                          columns="#{bindings.AppealName.hints.displayWidth}"
                          shortDesc="#{bindings.AppealName.hints.tooltip}"
                          binding="#{backingBeanScope.backing_Donation.appealNameId}"
                          autoSubmit="true" clientComponent="false">
                          <f:validator binding="#{bindings.AppealName.validator}"/>
                          <af:autoSuggestBehavior suggestedItems="#{backingBeanScope.backing_Donation.onSuggestAppeal}"/>
                          <af:clientListener method="onBlurTxtField" type="blur"/>
    </af:inputListOfValues>
    <af:serverListener type="onBlurNotifyServer"
                       method="#{backingBeanScope.backing_Donation.onBlurNotify}"/>
    as you can see,  af:serverListener is outside the af:inputListOfValues which probably is the reason its not executing this method?
    public void onBlurNotify(ClientEvent clientEvent) {
       // get a hold of the input text component
       RichSelectOneChoice inputTxt =  (RichSelectOneChoice) clientEvent.getComponent();
       //do some work on it here (e.g. manipulating its readOnly state)
       //Get access to the payload
       Map  parameters = clientEvent.getParameters();
       System.out.println("SubmittedValue = "+parameters.get("submittedValue"));
       System.out.println("LocalValue =  "+parameters.get("localValue"));
    I've tried to put serverListener tag inside the <af:inputListOfValues> but getting below error
    "Server Listener is not valid child of Input List of Values"
    any ideas please?
    thanks

    As first, check to see that you are using correct type for af:serverListener (thet one you are queue in the javaScript onBlurTxtField function)
    If still does not work, go to directly to the page source code, and put af:serverListener "by hand", as a child for af:inputListOfValues.
    Because it is possible that these messages are false alarm...

  • Calling function from Backing Bean or JSP page

    We are on Jdeveloper 10.1.3.3.0, ADF Faces, JSF Faces .., Currently there is a function call from Javascript event (onmouseover) in the JSP page. I want to call this function from a backing bean or JSP page, as I have to pass some values to this function.
    For Ex., I have a function call like return submit('A','B','Test'); on the Javascript event (onmouseover) in jsp page. I want to remove this function from the javascript event and call from backing bean or jsp page to pass some values into the submit() function. I appreciate if anyone can give some example of how to call this function from backing bean or jsp page in the <SCRIPT> or <SCRIPTLET>
    Thanks,
    Ram

    A use case would be helpful so that we can get a better idea of what you want to do.
    As a general rule, there is no way to call a client side Javascript function from a backing bean, which is server side. However, there are ways to inject information from a backing bean into your Javascript call. For instance, I have an application that uses Google Maps API. It has an onload call to a Javascript function that builds the map and designates it's center point. The center point comes from a backing bean as latitude and longitude properties. So here is my body tag:
    <afh:body onload="initialize(#{backing_searchResults.latitude},#{backing_searchResults.longitude},#{searchCriteria.distance})"
              onunload="GUnload()">onload calls the Javascript function called initialize, and passes the latitude, longitude, and distance from the bean. Is the function really being called from my backing bean? No - the parameters are hard coded into the onload event code when the page is rendered. Does it do the job? Sure it does.

  • Confusion about backing beans and multiple pages

    Hello:
    I'm new to JSF and am confused by several high level and/or design issues surrounding backing beans. The
    application I am working on (not unlike many apps out there, I suspect), is comprised of several forms which
    collect various query parameters and other pages that display the query results via dataTables. Additionally, the
    displayed results have hyper-text enabled content sprinkled throughout in order to allow further "drill-down" to
    greater details about a given result.
    Obviously, the initial forms are backed by a managed bean that has the getters/setters for each of the various
    fields. From a modularization perspective, I'd prefer to have the query execution in a separate class entirely,
    which I can accomplish via delegation or actionListeners. Where I get confused is in the case that one of the
    hyper-text enabled fields needs to invoke yet another query requiring specific values from the original result.
    In this case, how should I design the beans to store the pertinent selection information AND still be able to
    have the resulting 'details' query in a separate class.
    For example, let's assume that I have a form with a simple backing bean to collect initial query params. The user
    fills out the form and clicks on submit. The action field of the <h:commandButton> tag inside the <h:form>
    delegates to a method which performs the query and returns a navigation string to the results display page. The
    results page then uses a <h:dataTable> tag to display the results. However, through the process of displaying the
    results, it will create the hyper-text links as follows:
                        <h:form>
                            <h:commandLink action="viewDetails">
                                <h:inputHidden id="P_ID" value="#{results.id}"/>
                                <h:outputText value="Click here to see details"/>
                            </h:commandLink>
                        </h:form>Notice that the value="#{results.id}" is the key field (in some case I may need more than one) that the subsequent
    details page will need to perform the query. However, this value is stored in the results attribute of the original
    query backing bean. I do NOT want to add yet another level of queries into the same backing bean as I would like
    to keep the original and details query beans separated for maintenance and style reasons. How then, can I get this
    specific value ("#{results.id}") into another backing bean that could be accessed by the subsequent details page
    and query? In general, how does one map a single display element to multiple backing beans (or accomplish the
    effect of having one 'source' bean's value end up in another 'destination' bean's attr? If this is not possible,
    then isn't the details query/page forced to use the same backing bean in order to get the data it needs? If so,
    how can it determine which id was selected in this case?
    I'd appreciate any thoughts, ideas and suggestions here! Is there a better way to design the above in order to
    maintain the separation of logic/control? What is the 'best practice' approach for this sort of stuff?
    Thanks much in advance!

    This is what I have done in the pass
    <h:commandLink action="#{AppAction.getRecord}" >
    <h:outputText value="#{bbr.id}"/>
    <f:param name = "recordid" value ="#{bbr.id}" />
    </h:commandLink>
    within the getRecord method
    String key = "";
    FacesContext facesContext = FacesContext.getCurrentInstance();
         ServletContext servletContext = ServletContext)facesContext.getExternalContext().getContext();
    key = (String)facesContext.getExternalContext().getRequestParameterMap().get("recordid");
    then call you dbmethod passing in the key of the record the user wants to edit
    and then simply return a string to what page you want the user to go to

  • Shoul I have my backing beans extend my domain objects?

    Hi,
    In our JSF application, most of our backing beans have the same properties that a corresponding domain object.
    In order to have a clear separation between layers, we have a set of view objects and a separate set of domain objects. Once we populate the backing bean, we copy the value of properties to the domain object.
    Since all the properties of my domain object are duplicated in my backing beans, we were wondering if it is a good (or bad) idea to extend (inherit) my backing beans from my domain objects, and pass the backing beans to my persistence and business layers. This will save us some work.
    Thanks a lot for the advice.
    Mauricio L.

    I think I've solved my own issue though I'm not sure if it is the correct way to accomplish the task at hand.
    When the button for login is clicked and the logginButton_action() method is called inside of my login_jsp_backing class I do the following:
    User user = new User();
    FacesContext.getCurrentInstance().getExternalContext().getSessionMap().put("User", user);
    return user.doLogin(this.getInputUsername().getValue().toString(), this.getInputPassword().getValue().toString());
    (The String return of this method in User is a navigation rule I've setup in my faces-config)
    So my new question is that "Is this best practice?" or should I be doing it differently?

  • How to validate values from selectInputDate in backing bean

    Hi user:
    Use the class oracle.jbo.domain.Date in the date component then is very easy using the compareTo Method (Returns -1 if DATE is less than date, 0 if DATE and date are equal (==), 1 if DATE is greater than date).
    Good Luck.

  • CommandButton doesn't invode the function in backing bean.

    I have a jsp page which contains three buttons, and based on a session level state, only one shown at the beginning. Once this button is clicked, the other two are shown and the first one is hidden.
    When the first button (add) is clicked, the other two are shown correctly. But when I clicked any one of them, none of their backing bean methods are called. I checked the log, no exception.
    Then I tried to show all buttons at begining, and click them. Both backing bean methods are invoked.
    Did I miss something in the life cycle of JSF?
    Here is the part of jsp page:
    <h:commandButton action="#{manageBranches.doAddBranches}" image="/images/add.gif" rendered="#{!manageBranches.isAdd}"
    styleClass="toolbaricon" title="#{messages['branches.dropdown.add.branches']}"
    onmouseover="swapImage( this, 'add.gif', 'add_down.gif' );"
    onmouseout="swapImage( this, 'add.gif', 'add_down.gif' );" />
    <h:commandButton action="#{manageBranches.doEditBranches}" image="/images/edit_icon.gif" rendered="#{manageBranches.isAdd}"
    styleClass="toolbaricon" title="#{messages['branches.dropdown.edit.branches']}"
    onmouseover="swapImage( this, 'edit_icon.gif', 'edit_icon_down.gif' );"
    onmouseout="swapImage( this, 'edit_icon.gif', 'edit_icon_down.gif' );" immediate="true" />
    <h:commandButton action="#{manageBranches.doSaveBranches}" image="/images/save.gif" rendered="#{manageBranches.isAdd}"
    styleClass="toolbaricon" title="#{messages['branches.dropdown.save.branches']}"
    onmouseover="swapImage( this, 'save.gif', 'save_down.gif' );"
    onmouseout="swapImage( this, 'save.gif', 'save_down.gif' );" />
    Here are corresponding backing bean methods:
         public String doAddBranches()
              Logger.logEnterPublic(MY_CLASS, "doAddBranches()");
              setIsAdd(true);
              return null;
         public String doSaveBranches()
              Logger.logEnterPublic(MY_CLASS, "doSaveBranches()");
              String forward = null;
              if(addedBranchIds ==null || addedBranchIds.length()==0)
    MessageFactory.addErrorMessage( null, "branches.selectAtLeastOneBranch", null );
    this.successMsg = false;
    return forward;
              else
                   String[] branchIdArray = addedBranchIds.split(":");
              this.successMsg = true;
              //TODO: add save logic
              return forward;
         public String doEditBranches()
              Logger.logEnterPublic(MY_CLASS, "doEditBranches()");
              String forward = null;
              setIsAdd(false);
              return forward;
    The add button worked fine. But when save and edit button were shown and add button was hidden. Both save and edit button can't access the backing bean methonds. I put a break point on the constructor of the backing bean, it WAS accessed!
    Very confusing!
    Thanks for any helps.
    jm.

    Ok, I'm not 100% on this, but it's something you can try. In your action methods, you often return null when you want the page to just be reloaded. I believe in JSF, returning null and returning a string that represents the same page is quite different. I think this is because the component tree will get re-initialized when you return a proper string. It's quite possible that you need to have the component tree re-initialized for everything to work properly.
    Therefore, whenever you want to reload "pageA" then return an abbreviation called "A" (or whatever you want). In your faces-config.xml set up a rule that when outcome "A" is received (while on pageA) then load pageA.jsp.
    Hope that makes some sense! Let me know if it works.

    Hi,
    to call the bean, use the EL in Java and reference #{backingBeanScope.mapBean.initMap} as a method expression. If you try and access the bean directly then chances are that the instance is not available. Using EL from Java always guarantees this

  • Is it possible to call a custom method in App Module from a backing bean?

    I would like to know if a custom method in App Module can be called from inside a backing bean.
    I am not sure if it is logically right to call, from a backing bean, a custom method in App Module. But would like to know if that makes sense or if it is possible.

    Hi..
    Yes it is possible.You have to add that method for client interface of AppModule.Now you can see that method in Data Controls(Refresh the data control). To call this method using bean it should add as method action to bindings(Click Bindings>+>methodAction>and Create action binding).
    Now you can call this method in bean class.
    Check following example use this concept to execute view criteria

  • Action method of backing bean called multiple times instead of once.

    Hi,
    My backing bean has an action method called "saveEquipmentList" that's called when a "Save" button is clicked. The problem is, this method gets executed twice every time the button is clicked so data gets peristed twice, db triggers get executed twice, etc., it's really pretty annoying. I've put the bean method's code and the JSF command button below, notice that there's a check for FacesContext.getRenderResponse() that I put in for debugging, the code doesn't get executed at all if I leave the FacesContext.getRenderResponse() in, sure, you're saying "So what's you point", no point, just thought I'd explain why the check is in there.
    Thanks,
    Alex
    public synchronized String saveEquipmentList() throws Exception {
    // Order is very important.
    if (FacesContext.getCurrentInstance().getRenderResponse()) {
    System.out.println("GOT RENDER RESPONSE... XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX");
    try {
    loadEquipmentCodesMap(); // Loads map from equip_code_ids in the DB.
    updateEquipCodesMap(); // Updates total for objcode/type to sum of equipment items for that objcode/type.
    saveEquipmentCodes(); // Saves to equipment_codes table.
    loadEquipmentCodesMap();
    updateDataList();
    savedataList();
    updateTotals();
    loadEquipmentList();
    catch (Exception e) {
    setErrMessage("Error saving equipment: " + e.getMessage());
    return "success";
    }else{
    //facesContext.getCurrentInstance().renderResponse();
    return "success";

    Here's the phase listener output before clicking the "Save" button (which calls the saveEquipmentList() action method), I pasted it all, from app started to breakpoint, couldn't get it all in due to the 30K char constraint:
