General slowness, but Safari is taking FOREVER!!!

For more than a month I've been struggling with extreme internet slowness. My MacBook in general was running slow so I did the usual (verify permissions, repair permissions). That didn't help. I verified the HD, cleaned out all of my folders and defragged the HD using iDefrag. I've moved most of my media files to an external hard drive. General operating speed has increased to normal.
Safari, is whole other matter. I've replaced the router with an new Airport Extreme N, I've clocked my bandwidth at 15-20kbps, I've reset safari, emptied the cache, moved the Safari folder to my desktop and used the new Safari folder, installed all available updates, cleared and deleted History, Bookmarks, changed DNS settings. So far I've not found anything to speed up safari. For what it's worth Firefox performs worse than Safari. I've updated what plug-ins I have. I've even disabled them and still there has been no change in Safari's performance.
If anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated. I love my mac and have a hard time living without it. Especially when my wife travels out of town.
Thanks!

I followed this thread and tried everything listed below to no avail. Just for your info.

First, if yours is an Intel Mac, check that Safari is not running in Rosetta, which is enough to slow it to a crawl.)
Adding DNS codes to your Network Settings, should gives good results in terms of speed-up:
Open System Preferences/Network. Double click on your connection type, or select it in the drop-down menu. Click on TCP/IP and in the box marked 'DNS Servers' enter the following two numbers:
208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220
(An explanation of why that is both safe and a good idea can be read here: http://www.labnol.org/internet/tools/opendsn-what-is-opendns-why-required-2/2587 /
Open DNS also provides an anti-phishing feature: http://www.opendns.com/solutions/homenetwork/anti-phishing/ )
Wikipedia also has an interesting article about Open DNS:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OpenDNS
Whilst in System Preferences/Network you should also turn off 'IPv6' in your preference pane, as otherwise you may not get the full speed benefit (the DNS resolver will default to making SRV queries). If you want to know what IPv6 is:
This is Apple's guidance on iPv6:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.5/en/8708.html
Click on Apply Now and close the window.
Restart Safari, and repair permissions.
If that didn't do it, then try this as well:
Empty Safari's cache (from the Safari menu), then close Safari.
Go to Home/Library/Safari and delete the following files:
form values
download.plist
Then go to Home/Library/Preferences and delete
com.apple.Safari.plist
Repair permissions (in Disk Utility).
Start up Safari again, and things should have improved.

  • I was having problems with my iPhone 5s. Was able to get another 5s. In the process of setting it up, but it is taking forever ... and it seems to be frozen at one particular place.

I was having problems with my iPhone 5s (couldn't receive iMessages or emails). Cell company tried "fixing it" but to no avail. They ordered me a repacement 5s. Trying to set up, but it is taking forever. Seems to be stuck in one particular spot. It's at the stage with a black screen, white apple icon and a bar underneath. The bar is is just a fraction complete, and it has been stuck in this spot for almost an hour. Tried to restart it but it went to the same spot and froze again.

You do not use a WEP password but wpa/wpa2 on router and equipment.
All equipment connects to WiFi, but for your iPad.
Even with all other equipment WiFi off, you cannot connect your iPad.
Your iPad connects to other WiFi nets correctly.
All resets etc done on iPad and Router.
Still I am not sure it is your router for sure, frustrating...
I want to test 2 other things:
    1. in your iPad, set everything OFF in Settings/Cellular, turn off/then/on your WiFi, and see whether it will still not connect...
    2. If that does not do it: disconnect the router as well as the modem from the power, for 15 seconds, then reconnect the modem, let it fully start, then reconnect the routet let it fully start, turn of your WiFi in iPad, then on, and see whether it will connect.

  • Why is my 4g Internet running so slow? My download speed is 22.0 mb/s and upload speed is 18.0 mb/s. I ran a test to find that out. Idk if that's slower than what it's supposed to read out at but it's taking forever to watch videos online. Help?

My Internet on my iPhone 4S w/ 4g started running slow a month or 2 ago and has t changed since. It takes several minutes just to buffer short online vids and way longer if its over 2-3 minutes. Pages are loading slow. Downloading aps is a nightmare too. Any thing I can do to improve speed on it? I've only had the phone for 6 months or so.

One thing I've noticed is that a shared tab pops up when I open the finder under "favorites" with a random connection. It's called hp68b... None of my friends that I live with have this and we all use the same internet. Two days ago when I would click it and click get info, it said it was a pc. When I checked it today it said it is a "sharepoint" and looks like a harddrive.
I took it too the store after i spilt water on it but when I got it back it ran perfectly fine. I don't know a lot about computer so if somebody could help me. It says I'm connected to it and I can't disconnect or delete it. I don't know if the guy at the computer store put something in my computer and is sharing all my files.

  • Firefox is painfully slow, but Safari is normal/quick

Hello. My pc laptop is running so slooow with Firefox browser, but with Safari it is normal, fast. This started 2 days ago. Firefox was running very nicely, fast, normal. Now I have to wait to see the letters after I type....everything is slow... Why? What can I do to make it normal again? I prefer Firefox.

For me this problems started with version 29. In another thread it was suggested that hardware acceleration might be the problem. I turned off hardware acceleration, and that fixed the problem.
    >>Tools>Options>Advanced>General Tab>Use hardware acceleration when available <<= uncheck

  • HELP! I have to verify my Apple-ID-password, but it is taking forever!

I suddenly had to verify my Apple-ID-password in order to continue using iCloud on my mac, but after I have entered my password and hit the OK-button, it just loads forever.. Why is this? I have tried wrong passwords, resulting in my access being denied, so I figured my password is not the reason. I resently changed my appl-ID password, but ii is working fine on my iPhone with iTunes and AppStore.

  • Trying to restore 2nd gen nano...but download is taking forever / hanging..

I just moved from XP to Mac. I got my library moved from the XP to Mac via ethernet connection (very easy). I deauthorized my XP and authorized the Mac..easy again.
Now, I plugged the nano into the Mac via USB and it re-loaded my library, but it is still formated for Windows.
So, I clicked Restore and it began to download the software (whatever software that is) to get it back to factory default. For a 20MB file, this took close to 30min (that was annoying) on a cable modem..that doesn't sound right. Once it hit 20MB it kept going..I finally killed the download when it hit just over 24MB.
What the heck is going on? I just want to restore and get my nano formated to Mac.
    Any ideas??

Thanks, but you don't happen to know anything else about this, do you?
Also, I've now realised it was pointless trying to update my iPod, for I've now found-out that the 2G can't be updated past 4.2.1 (or something) anyway >_>

  • Hi, where can I manually download windows support software for boot camp windows 7 installation, I am trying through boot camp but its like taking forever to download its been 5 hours but boot camp still have't completed the download

can any one give me a link to download them manually

create a Windows support software (drivers) CD or USB storage media
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4407
Advanced Network: Proxy Settings, I uncheck "Auto Proxy detection" and make sure you have the interface you use selected and none others.
"Go into System Preferences - Network - Advanced - Proxies  Uncheck "Auto Proxy Discovery", click OK, Apply"
After Unchecking "Auto Proxy Discovery" I also had to Uncheck "Use Passive FTP Mode (PASV)" and then Restart Boot Camp Assistant.
odiggy's comment and tried restarting Boot Camp Assistant. That did the trick, even though the Auto Proxy Discovery checkbox ended up the same as it started.  Windows support software is now downloading...  if you're downloading to an external drive make sure there's a least 1 GB of free space because the WindowsSupport folder is around 700 MB and presumably will grow with time.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3223773?start=15
Also, Change Domain Name Servers to OpenDNS IP address servers - that should be at the router firewall rather than the OS but may be in both for some people. You may be using the defaults your ISP uses, save those if you want, and try these:
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
Make sure you are not using LittleSnitch or Symantec (probably other 3rd party firewall)

  • IMac hard drive extremely slow (but not on BootCamp)

My iMac 20" from late 2006 has suddenly become extremely slow, meaning it read/writes from/to the harddisk at a very slow rate, down to 1 MBps according to Disk Speed Bench X. It's impossible to use the computer now and I haven't done anything special lately to make this happen, except downloading a lot of files lately that took a lot of space (down to 3 GB left on my 250 GB drive), until I deleted them again.
Interestingly, my BootCamp partition with XP Professional is working perfectly.
What is the solution? A new drive? I'm trying to restore it from Time Machine now, but it's taking forever... Oh, and I have used Onyx and repaired all rights, and Disk Tools reports that everything is in perfect order.

Ack - sorry. Doing two things at once and I missed that. Still, having gotten down to 2GB and now at 20GB, you may well have developed some fragmentation issues. First, run Disk Utility and make sure there's nothing that needs to be repaired. This might explain the slow down. If it passes, or if you successfully repair the drive, and the disk is still slow, consider defragging the drive. Ordinarily the Mac OS doesn't need it but when your drive becomes very full the Mac's built in defragging methodology doesn't work so well.

  • Why is it taking forever for my MacBook pro to start up?

It is taking forever for my MacBook pro to start up. It's been on the screen with the grey apple and the spinning icon for about 20 minutes now. I tried holding down the shift button when powering up to reboot in safe mood but that is taking forever as well. Any suggestions?

Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    Do the following:
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install the Combo Updater for the version you prefer from support.apple.com/downloads/.
Reinstalling Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alterhatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer.

For about the past week, Facebook has been taking forever to load (or just doesn't) on my mac (OSX 10.5.8; Safari 5.0.6).  Other sites are fine.  I routinely empty the cache, clear history, cookies, etc. each time I shut down.  Suggestions?

I don't use Facebook, but I can say that clearing the cache every time you shut down is excessive - unless you're sure the cache is corrupt you should leave it alone.  It exists to speed up your browsing experience by loading frequently requested items from your drive rather than downloading them fresh from the internet each time.  So, I would say stop clearing your cache and see what happens.
As for clearing cookies: I'm not sure what method you currently use, but I would recommend you download and install CCleaner.  It's free, and allows you to build up a list of cookies that you want to clear and those you want to keep, before deleting them.
Both of these may help speed things up by reducing the amount of work Safari has to perform whilst browsing.  Regardless, I'd say that, unless there's a reason you've not mentioned for performing the "purging" that you do, making these two changes should see improvements in general web browsing if not specifically when loading Facebook.

  • Since upgrading to OS 8.0.2 my ipad2 freezes, slows down, safari takes forever to open, the celluar network goes to No Service and the only way to fix it is to reboot it and this takes longer than before.  Has Microsoft taken over Apple software?

SInce upgrading to OS 8.0.2 my ipad 2 freezes, slows down, safari takes forever to open pages, cellular network goes to No Service requiring a reboot (and this takes longer than before), in summary, I now have a fancy paperweight, i used to love my ipad.  I feel as if Microsoft has taken charge of the Apple Software Division.

Sorry if someone sees this post in a different thread; Just want to get some additional exposure.. Who knows, maybe someone from Apple will take note..
The glitchy, unresponsive, slow and outright crashes are something you would expect in a less superior product.  I paid what I consider a premium because of the perceived integrity of the company and quality of their products. I am not going to go as far to say Apple ***** and so do their products; but they have to to a better job of acknowledging problems and providing recourse.  Right now, it "feels" like they don't care about existing customers.  I am not sure of the exact #'s, but I believe products like the Ipad2 represent a significant population of their existing Ipad product base.
So what is my specific rant; If Apple is going to take a long time, or worst, NOT fix the problems introduced in IOS 8 for IPAD  2, give us the option of going back to IOS 7.  I would say most everyone was extremely happy with their product running under that OS and would migrate back in a heartbeat.  By blocking this option, it feels like Apple is saying that the only recourse is to live with crappy performance, wait forever without any real news, or throw away your Ipad 2 and buy a newer model.  Right now this is 100% completely unacceptable, and I, as will thousands of others, will watch how this unfolds when we do buy new products.  Most technology products only have short, finite lifespan and I would think it is at very least very important to Apple to retain customer base in a highly competitive marketplace.  I'm done...
