General stability of 10.6 vs 10.5

I have been running a 10.5 server for some time now and I have to say that it was nothing but trouble setting up and continues to be quirky. Can anyone chime in on the general stability for 10.6 vs 10.5?
thanks!

I will go back to the basics. What are the servers doing and will upgrading to Snow make them do it any better? Or, will upgrading to Snow provide new functionality currently missing from the Tiger and Leopard systems?
If you answer to both above are no, then you have an expensive, time consuming, and operationally disruptive project on your hands. If the answer is yes, then planning, planning, planning, is the name of the game. This then comes back to which services are you running and how do those services interact with the workstations in the environment?
For example, if you are hanging on to Tiger because of POSIX inheritance and older versions of Adobe CS, then upgrading will be bad. If you are hanging onto Tiger or Leopard because you have web archives that you search with Spotlight, then upgrading will be bad. I could write these all night. But we would both get bored.
If you are in an OD environment then I will suggest you follow my game plan. Strive to start the process with new hardware and then do a trickle down. This ensures the least amount of downtime, infuses new hardware into the environment that will be protected for three years. Make this the center of the environment and build a clean, fresh ODM with all the nice touches. Then when you are ready, make it take over the environment and services of the previous ODM, retiring the previous server and allowing you to rebuild it while not under the gun. Rinse and repeat. In any case, I strongly urge clean installs. Upgrades are poison.
Hope this helps. Good luck. Check the rumor sites about future updates when planning your move to Snow.

  • General Stability Issues

    The last few days I've noticed an increasing number of stability issues. The phone will lock-up, jump out of applications back to the home screen, restart, etc. I have the lastest firmware and I did a restore on my phone last night and have had the same issues today. This phone has not experience any trauma...it has been babied the entire time since I've bought it. Do I need to take it in for service? Has anyone else had these issues?

    I'm beginning to get a little discourage with the iPhone. I bought mine back around the first part of August. The external speaker would not work, i.e. no ringtone. They replaced it. Bought my wife an iPhone after the rebates and price reduction. Her first one melted down when we tried to activate it. They replaced it at the store....works fine to date. The replacement they gave me back in August has worked fine until the last few days. If this one has to be replaced or sent in for service, that would make three phones in a couple of months. Like I said earlier, I'm pretty anal about protecting my phone and not subjecting it to any drops or temp. extremes.

  • "Broken" NICs and General Stability Issues with Neo 4 Platinum

    I have a XP Pro SP2 system with a Neo4 Platinum that is behaving very strangely.
    I've been getting increasingly frequent bluescreens (mostly low level kernel errors and such) while under moderate to heavy load for the past few weeks. I gave up and reinstalled XP Pro this weekend to try to fix the problem. The errors have continued, and during the install process I noticed several more hardware problems that seem to have slowly been getting worse.
    The second (non-nVidia) gigiabit NIC is completely missing, i.e. it does not show up in Windows nor on the integrated peripherals screen in the BIOS. In addition, I do not get a link light when I plug it into a switch. According to the manual and my memory, there should be similar options for the second NIC as I'm currently seeing for the nVidia one in the BIOS.
    In addition, the nVidia-based NIC does not function close to properly. Whenever I download a file or do any sort of network activity, the data that I get is corrupted. Zip files and installers that verify downloads report CRC errors and SSH connections/file transfers just plain die, complaining about bad packets.
    It doesn't seem to be a heat problem, because, watching the temps in the BIOS after a bluescreen, the CPU is at most 45, and usually less. I don't have any of the overclocking options enabled, just the "optimized defaults" except for disabling the boot splash screen. I've tried BIOS 1.6, 1.8, and 1.9, all of which have the same issues. I have the latest motherboard and graphics drivers.
    Anybody here have any idea about what's going on? Thanks in advance.

    You haven't installed the Nvidia Firewall have you? That cause my system to be unstable and blue screen a lot. Removed the Nvidia firewall problem sorted. I don't know about the marvell nic not working, does it show in device manager?

  • Neo2 platinum Encountering Stability Problems /w dual channel memory

    Hello,
    Recently I built my first computer ever, see bottom.  After getting windows installed I then had problems with installing other programs and general stability issues.  I tried reinstalling windows and after the reinstall I got the same problems.
    Something to do with the instability is when I start it up, and go into BIOS, it states my Athlon 64 3500+ as running at 2211, a half percent overclock.  Also, even though I have the FSB set as 200mhz, when I go into CoreCenter on windows it states the FSB as being set 201mhz.  In the nVidia system utility, it states my memory as running at 402mhz, and I had to crank that down to 400mhz to get stability, it allowed my to install programs without error, but there were still stability problems like crashes(blue screen, the computer just plain restarting without notice).  I took out one of my memory cards, both of them work alone though, I've ran memory test utilities.  That had a good effect and the computer runs fairly stable, but I still have problems, and I want to be able to take advantage of dual channel.  I'm running my memory on auto and it's using the times of 2-3-3-6-2T.
    Another problem I'm experiencing is the AC97 audio not being detected and loaded by windows, it will say I have no audio device, and the speaker will not show up in the notification area in the bottom right-hand corner.  This happens inconsistantly.

    hi bknoll,
    welcome to the forum.
    1) i wouldn't worry overmuch at the 201 issue.
    2) Quote
    I've ran memory test utilities. That had a good effect and the computer runs fairly stable, but I still have problems
    which test utilities did you use, Don't quiet understand  Quote
    had a good effect and the computer runs fairly stable
    3) It may be worth checking the Mushkin site or any documentation you have to verify that the auto settings agree with the quoted settings for the modules. It's not unkown for errors to occur when the memory controller on the CPU to misinterpret the SPD chip setting on your sticks - this is where the auto settings come from. Some memory like certain corsair modules need to run at different settings on AMD64, thus auto timings must be overidden,
    4) Have you installed the Realtek drivers from the CD, & enabled onboard sound in Bios. When these are done normally there's the MSI Sound Effect manager in control panel. you just need to set your speaker config in the Windows Sounds & Audio Devices.
    5) Usual question What power supply are you using as been underpowered on the 12v rail in particular can be the cause of crashes,

  • K7T266 PRO2-RU stability problems

    In the last few months I've been experiencing general stability issues with my K7T266 PRO2-RU.  In attempts to try and resolve these issues I've flashed the BIOS, updated drivers, reinstalled Windows numerous times, checked for leaking capacitors and reduced the machine to nothing more than the essential hardware (video card, memory, processor).
    In troubleshooting I've discovered very little, except that none of these things have been very successful and some odd things that are outlined below.
    1. The machine still randomly reboots, and programs crash inexplicably without error.
    2. WindowsXP invariably hangs during installation to the RAID controller (RAID 0).  I've tried various driver versions but all reproduce a similar result.  I suspected there may be a problem with the drives, but that doesn't appear to be the case as it does this regardless of the drives used - 2 Maxtor DiamondMax Plus D740X'(s).  It also does this when using 2 Western Digital WD300BB'(s) and new cables, so I know it is NOT my drives.  Windows will install to one drive but is as previously stated - unstable.
    3.  I've tested the machine using another video card, in addition to running the video card and the memory in my other box, of which both cards are good and run rock solid under stress testing.
    Any ideas or suggestions are welcome.
    Here's the config:

    Thanks for the suggestion,
    While I was waiting to see if anyone would quickly reply I read through previous posts to the forum and found a link to memtest86.  I've already tested one module to isolate bank 0 as known good and it passed.  2nd attempt I put both modules in, 1 in bank 0 and the other in bank 2.  I began receiving errors only after 5 min.  I never suspected this would be the problem as I tested the memory in another machine and previously with an obviously inferior memory test app and it passed.  No big deal though, at least now I've discovered the problem.
    I'm now doing additional testing to the suspect module.
    (Errors in Bank 2 - Next trying it in Bank 0 which I know worked, just to rule out a possibly defective bank)
    Update:
    Errors all over the place in Bank 0,1, and 2 - Looks like the module took the dirt nap.  Time to use that lifetime warranty.
    Thanks again.

  • I'm struggling to install Logic Pro 9 upgrade on Mountain Lion

    Way back we bought one of the last pre-Intel G5 in order to do music processing. We also bought Logic Studio v6 or 7. Then we upgraded to Logic Studio 8 and later decided to use a macbook pro instead of the G5. So far so good. We then upgraded to Logic Pro 9 and can run this on Lion on the Macbook Pro.
    My partner is now working away and takes his Macbook with him, so we want to set-up Logic 9 on my macbook pro which is running Mountain Lion 10.8.4. Once this is done we will take it off his machine, so not pirating in any way.
    I have managed (at great length) to install Logic Studio 8 on my machine using Pacifist, and I can open it and create projects etc... I now want to install Logic Pro 9 on this machine but I get a message saying that a qualifying copy of Logic or MainStage was not found on the disk. To complicate matters, we can't find either the logic pro 9 disk or an image copy, so I downloaded from the following link:
    http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2972851/logic-downloads-fixed.html
    which I found in this thread:  https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4948612
    I have already spent many many hours fiddling with this, does anyone know how I can get around this problem?

    Im using LPX and have found it to work well.... and no less stable than LP9 in terms of general stability. There are some bugs but given we are still in the early stages of development, that is not surprising and is no different to how it was with LP8 and 9 in their early days. I should add I haven't come across any "showstopper" bugs that affect my own personalo workflow and method of using Logic... just a few niggles and minor annoyances... that for the most part can be worked around if they haven't already been fixed in the 3 updates that have come out since initial release.
    I have had no real issues with importing LP9 projects into LPX other than of course, the lack of 32bit Plugin support in LPX which means LP9 projects that contain 32bit plugins.. will not fully import into LPX. The midi/audio data imports ok.. the 32bit plugins will be missing however... if you don't have equivilant 64bit versions installed. For me, this issue has been very minimal simply because almsot all the plugins i use, have already been updated to 64bit versions over the last few years.
    There has also been an issue with certain parameters in the track/region Inspector after import into LPX, containing weird values.. I have only had this issue once out of maybe 40+ LP9 Projects and in this one case i simply reset the values and all was well. Other users have reported different levels of how often this occurs.
    Note: Once a project has been opened and then resaved in LPX the LPX version cannot be opened in LP9 as project compatibility is only backwards and not forwards.
    If you cannot find your disk and serial..(which you will also need)  Contact Apple as they may be able to provide you with replacements disks if they have any left. Bear in mind if, as it appears, your LP9 is an upgrade from LP8 you will also need your previous LP8 serial as well as your upgrade LP9 serial to properly install Logic on a new Mac. Once installed you can and in fact must... then update LP9 to 9.1.8 via software updates in LIon or Mountain LIon... for Logic to under those OS versions.

  • Logic Pro X - Disk is too slow or System Overload. (-10010)

    Hi there, I'm a professional music user and recently switched from Pro-Tools to Logic due to PT11's lack of third party plug-in support at the moment. I was looking forward to leaving behind the error messages of Pro-Tools for the supposed plain sailing of Logic. However, after installing Logic X and starting a new session with one track of audio and 4 tracks of software instruments, I'm receiving the following error message when attemping to record a part on one of the software instruments. 'Disk is too slow or System Overload. (-10010)'
    I have an 8 core Mac Pro with the latest version of Mountain Lion, 16GB of Ram and a 250GB SSD boot drive (which Logic is installed on). My sessions are ran from a secondary 120GB SSD which has 110GB of free space on it and my sample libraries are streamed from another internal 250GB SSD and a 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive. My interface is a Focusrite Scarlett 6i6 USB 2.0 and my I/O buffer is set to 512.
    It is completely unacceptable to me that I should be experiencing error messages with this set up and a 64 bit DAW, particularly when the session in question only has one track of audio and one instance of East West's Play engine, spread across 4 software instrument tracks.
    Has anyone else experienced similar problems or have any ideas as to what the solution could be? I'd really appreciate any advice.
    Cheers,
    David

    Just as a quick followup....
    After doing a little research online it seems the Scarlett is one of those USB2 devices that has issues with how Apple changed their implementation of USB when they released Macs with USB3 interfaces and put this updated implementation into Lion and later Mountain Lion... and that this is probably why some people have major issues like the OP is reporting and why other's do not. It depends on the hardware/OS X version combination as to if this issue rears it's ugly head.
    Oddly enough some Win 8 users are also reporting similar issues with the Scarlett for much the same reason.
    The March 2013 Scarlett OS X drivers are intended to 'alleviate' this issue but Focusrite have stated it is only to 'alleviate' in some instances and not completely fix the problem for everyone who has it,.,..
    However, the good news is that Focusrite have released some beta drivers (v1.7b2 and later b3) which seem to work better for some people than the last official release...
    Mac Only.
    General stability/logging improvements:
    - Improved audio stream syncing
    - Fixed bug which results in occasional inaccurate timestamps
    - Improves sample rate switching
    - 18i20 stream formats now switch automatically
    - Fixes Forte streaming at 176.4/192kHz
    You can find them here..
    http://beta.focusrite.com
    Note: These beta drivers again seem to only alleviate the issues for some people and not all but it has got to be worth giving them a try I would think...

  • Advice for new Razr owners

    My dog got hold of my Droid X, so I replaced it with a Razr, which won out over the iPhone 4s becase of 4G and screen size. First day, I found that my connection, whether 4G, 3G, roaming, whatever, would spontaneously drop out.  No rhyme or reason behind it. Verizon tech support tried to be helpful, but the tech sounded like she was grabbing at straws. She's sending me a SIM card.
    However, yesterday evening I went to Motorola's website and downloaded the latest software update, 6.11.748.XT912.  This update is supposed to provide:
    Phone
    Improved 4G data connectivity
    Eliminated false SIM error messages
    Improved performance for transition between 3G and 4G connections
    Improved maintenance of network connection upon completion of a voice call
    Enhanced Wi-Fi performance
    Camera
    Enhanced camera performance
    Phone Stability
    Resolved general stability issues in menu access. Browser, Phone Dialer, video playback and music player reducing Force Close errors and lockups.
    Other
    Improved readability for Lapdock™ email, SMS and social networking user interface menu items
    Updated group message notifications
    IF YOU HAVE NOT INSTALLED THIS UPDATE, DO IT NOW!  My Razr is now working flawlessly, and (aside from battery life) I can say I love it.  The Razr now has the highest sensitivity of any phone I've owned, and that's a lot. I've been with Verizon a LONG time, beginning when it was Metro Mobile CTS.  I live in the country, 60 miles south of any major city, and I can now travel between the two without losing a signal!
    The RAZR ROCKS!  (except for the battery life, like I said, but that's what car chargers are for )

    try turning off 4g and just leave the 3g on.there an app for that.and of course make sure data is enabled.you area may not have a good 4g connection.

    Chris,
    I've been running the Beta 265 version in FF 13.0.1 in Windows 7 Pro 64-bit for awhile now. (Note: I really had no issues with 262, just testing this one out). The loss of browser focus is still there. I've had a couple crashes:

    They've all happened while watching NASCAR RaceBuddy at nascar.com during races. But, that was after using it for more than an hour and I think 1 race it never crashed. I had other tabs going at the same time and I'm sure some of them also had videos or other flash content. Other than those hiccups, no problems with playing videos or any audio issues. Doing any testing here where something has to run for an hour or more and may or may not occur would be a pain to test/verify if any settings actually fixed anything. I wonder if I should even report it but they did happen.
    Oh, was testing out myspace as someone reported a problem there: http://www.myspace.com/tomhouse and it doesn't work when trying to play music there but I think that's due to a coding issue on their end not recognizing the version number as valid or something.

  • Crash (SIGSEGV, SIGILL) of 32bit Hotspot under Linux x86_64 in VMware

    Hello!
    A reproducible crash of these 1.6 32 bit Java VMs is hinderung my application from starting when I want to start it under a x86_64 Linux kernel in VMware (Workstation and ESX):
    - java version "1.6.0_06"
    Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_06-b02)
    Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 10.0-b22, mixed mode, sharing)
    - java version "1.6.0_06"
    Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_06-b02)
    Java HotSpot(TM) Server VM (build 10.0-b22, mixed mode)
    - java version "1.6.0_10-beta"
    Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_10-beta-b23)
    Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 11.0-b11, mixed mode, sharing)
    Tested using there kernels:
    - Linux debian 2.6.18-6-amd64 #1 SMP Sun Feb 10 17:50:19 UTC 2008 x86_64 GNU/Linux
    - Linux openSUSE 2.6.22.5-31-default #1 SMP 2007/09/21 22:29:00 UTC x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

    Sproradic but reproducible JVM (Hotspot) crashes while running a simple garbage collector stress application several times in parallel. hs_err files are generated each time. However, the "Problematic frame" address and library changes every time!
    Examples:
    # Java VM: Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (10.0-b22 mixed mode, sharing linux-x86)
    # Problematic frame:
    # C [libc.so.6+0xe4c9d] xdr_u_long+0xd
    VM state:not at safepoint (normal execution)
    # Java VM: Java HotSpot(TM) Server VM (10.0-b22 mixed mode linux-x86)
    # Problematic frame:
    # C 0xf7f56acb
    VM state:at safepoint (normal execution)
    # Java VM: Java HotSpot(TM) Server VM (10.0-b22 mixed mode linux-x86)
    # Problematic frame:
    # C [libnss_compat.so.2+0x2e16] nsscompat_getpwnam_r+0x46
    VM state:synchronizing (normal execution)
    The problem only appears using JDK or JRE 1.6 32 bit edition on a Linux 2.6 x86_64 kernel in VMware. Tests using real hardware, using a i686 kernel and using JDK / JRE 1.6 64 bit edition or JDK / JRE 1.5 (32 bit and 64 bit) could not reproduce the crashes.
    Questions:
    - Is there a general stability problem when starting the 32 bit Java VM under Linux 64?
    - Does anybody have similar problems with
    - Java VM 32bit under Linux 64?
    - Java VM in VMware (both ESX and Workstation)?
    Simple stress test application:
    public class GCStress {
    private static Thread[] threads;
    private static java.util.Random random = new java.util.Random();
    private static int maxBytes;
    private static int numThreads;
    public static void main(String[] args) {
    numThreads = Integer.parseInt(args[0]);
    maxBytes = Integer.parseInt(args[1]);
    threads = new Thread[numThreads];
    for (int x = 0; x < numThreads; x++) {
    threads[x] = new Thread(new Allocator(), "Thread_" + x);

    while (true) {
    for (int x = 0; x < numThreads; x++) {
    if (!threads[x].isAlive()) {
    threads[x] = new Thread(new Allocator(), "Thread_r" + x);
    threads[x].start();
    try {
    Thread.sleep(500);
    } catch (InterruptedException e) {
    // ignore
    private static class Allocator implements Runnable {
    public void run() {
    while (true) {
    int tSize = random.nextInt(maxBytes);
    // System.out.println(Thread.currentThread().getName()
    // + " allocating " + tSize / 1024 + "kb");
    byte[] tMemFiller = new byte[tSize];
    try {
    Thread.sleep(random.nextInt(200));
    } catch (InterruptedException e) {
    ; // ignore
    }

    The program is started like this:
    ./jdk1.6.0_06/bin/java -server -Xms32m -Xmx256m GCStress 500 10485760
    And I run it usually 5 times in parallel. 1 time seems not to be enough (I should test that tonight).
    However, I've tested using several -XX: flags, but nothing really helped! (-XX:+UseParallelGC, -XX:-UseTLAB, -XX:+UseSpinning -XX-UseThreadPriorities, -XX:-UseBiasedLocking, -XX:-UseLargePages)
    About the lib: Every time, the content of hs_err is very different. I've also got

  • Still no live Scopes?

    As one of my requested features I was hoping that vector scopes would be (or could be) live while you were playing the video in the main monitor.
    Is there STILL no way to see composite video AND vectorscopes updating at the same time in CS6?
    Did I miss something here?

    Any update on this? Premiere CC still doesn't play back reference monitor video scopes when the program monitor is displaying the timeline material.
    I've tried the workaround method using the second monitor to display the program material full screen but personally don't like that workspace - perhaps from force of habit I like to see the program feed directly above the timeline and keep the second montor for secondary bins (filters, effect controls, project bins, etc).
    I've submitted a feature request for CC but was just wondering if a solution was in the works? I'd rather not go down the Blackmagic Ultrascopes path if necessary from a cost and spare PCI port consideration!
    Top work to the dev team on Premiere CC by the way! I'm well impressed with the release as it seems to has addressed many of the annoyances with CS6 (media relinking, sticky/jumpy keyframes, general stability issues, playback performance).

    Dude, prime doesn't use the videocard.
    So there is no reason to take prime as a general stability test.
    COD is a good example that uses the entire memory, CPU and videocard.
    The reason your screens shows blue says nothing, it simply gets a signal a videocard is connected.
    All of it still doesn't prove the memory or CPU is good, a game puts way more stress on the entire system then prime ever will, prime uses cache a lot, gaming doesn't.
    For me gaming is the best stress-test ever, so you need to replace parts until it games fine, my prime suspects: Memory or CPU.
    I just tell you about prime cause you ask for cpu.I make tests with FurMark for 20 minutes on vgae and i don't see error or restart.By the way.I open one of minidump files.Can you understand something from this?

  • Can I use my Mac book pro while downloading a tv series from iTunes?

    Can I use my Mac book pro while downloading a long tv series from iTunes?  Or will I lose my connection ? And my money?

    I use my MacBook Pro all the time when downloading something from the iTunes store without losing my connection. If you would probably depends on the general stability of your WiFi or LAN connection, but you should not.
    Also, if a download should get interrupted you can always start it again by going to "Downloads" in iTunes.

  • Smart View Options Window

    Hi,
    On some of our computers it takes up to ten seconds if we open the Smart View Options Window. On other maschines it opens immediatly. Do you have any idea?
    It occurs on Version 11.1.2.1 and 11.1.2.2
    thanks and best regards
    Oliver

    We have had some compatibility issues with certain Excel add-ins and the Smart View add-in on various machines and now advise users to disable any other add-ins when using SV....so this could be the case with you (although ours are generally stability issues rather than performance issues as you have reported.)
    I guess the only way of knowing for sure is to disable all other add-ins and check performance. You can then re-introduce each add-in and see if you can identify the problem one.
    Thanks
    JB
