General Use Issues

I've been using my Playbook for a few months now and am having a really great experience with it... until my most recent trip that is. I travel for work a lot and have been using my PB quite a bit, in short, i like it... a LOT, but there's an awful lot that i'm still really displeased about and it all kinda boiled over for me today. After spending more than a few hours on the support forums and coming up empty I've decided to make a list of the things that I'm having issues with. Specifically, I'd like to point out all of the things that don't work that make me say to myself "Are people at RIM even using this?" because some of these are pretty obvious. Before this gets out of hand i really have to emphasize how much i enjoy the Playbook, it's not for everyone but I'm finding the people who take the time to look at it REALLY like owning it, count me in that group.... I just wish it worked
1) Audio out of sync when watching videos:
This topic has been covered in this thread ( http://supportforums.blackberry.com/t5/BlackBerry-PlayBook/Audio-in-videos-out-of-sync-randomly/td-p... ) but there is no solution. In fact somebody decided to hijack the thread to troubleshoot the same issue on their Torch. Regardless, I don't seem to be the only one having problems with audio/video being out of sync so i don't know why this hasn't been addressed. It very literally renders the "Videos" application useless for me.
2) Podcasts
I'm not sure how many Blackberry users out there actually listen to podcasts and I'm also not sure how many users subscribe to them via the actual podcast website but i'm guessing that i'm in the minority on this one. Nonetheless I have nothing but praise for podcast support on my Bold 9780, it's extremely well done and simple to set up subscriptions. On the PB however, this support is completely non-existent. the only option is to go through the Podcast "Store" which does not have the content i'm interested in (various ESPN broadcasts). Not only that but when i Bridge to my Berry to stream the podcast file over bluetooth it says that the playbook can't do it. To RIM's credit the Podcast Store application is EXTREMELY well done, i just wish i could use it.
3) Copy/Paste
Tried to copy a URL from the browser and paste it into a new Email or BBM conversation but couldn't. More specifically i tap and hold on the URL, then select "Copy All" from the selection pane, switch applications, tap and hold to bring up my "Copy Menu" and there is no "Paste" button.... this one could just be me being an **bleep** and not "doing it right" but my brain tells me i should have a Paste button beside the Copy button if i've selected/copied something.
4) BBM notifications when connected via Bridge
This has been happening to me since day one and OS version 1.0.5. I get a BBM, look at/read it on either my Berry or PB and the notification just doesn't go away. Everything looks fine on my Bold, no unread messages, i have all my checkmarks and little D's and R's but for some reason my Playbook will show that i have a bunch of BBM notifications. Every time this happens it causes me to say "Are you kidding me???" (profanities excluded). I have no idea why this isn't a massive priority to fix but i'm convinced RIM doesn't care because both the .06 and .07 updates completely ignored the problem (but Oh Boy! We can zoom in on Videos now!! Come on...)
5) Headphone Audio Boost is lacking
I was excited to get on a plane to try this out and was immediately disappointed when i did. like i say, i travel a lot, but it's often on small, very noisy, planes. I flew from Gander, NFLD to Saint John, NB on our corporate plane today, it's a small 6 seater that takes about 2 hours to do that trip. Naturally i figured the timing would be good enough that i could watch a movie on my PB so i fired it up, flicked on the audio boost and still could barely hear it. Maybe i need new headphones but my Thinkpad, Macbook, Bold, and ipod have never had issues before with them. they're Zagg Smartbuds for reference.
6) Lack of Audio/Video Codec Support
This one doesn't bother me too much because i'm used to this being the last thing that gets built into devices, it took M$ forever to finally make the 360 a viable media player. Pretty self explanatory, a lot of the movies i transfer over to my device will play the video fine but with absolutely no sound, this is different from the sync issue described in #1.
7) Browser Lock ups
I like the browser, it just hangs a lot. I'm not sure if i'm trying to move too quickly for it but when i click a link and the blue progress bar stops at about 1/3 of the way i know i've gotta close/reopen it. This happens to me usually about once per browsing session.
That's it! I expect to accomplish nothing with this post... just needed to vent about it. My first Playbook was stolen so i've spent over $1,400 hoping that this thing was the right tablet for me. After about 4 months of using it i'm convinced that i wasn't wrong, the Playbook is a fantastic device and i still love it when people ask me about it. Having said that, there are still issues with it and all i can find are people like me posting their problems, having people agree with them, and not getting a concrete resolution or ETA on a fix. How about a "We're working on it, just hang tight"?

As a part-time sound engineer I'd be very careful about using an audio boost option. Aircraft noise can already result in hearing damage. Trying to boost headphone audio over the plane noise could be very dangerous.
I'd recommend investing in some closed headphones - I like Sennheiser HD 280 pro, but go with whatever is comfortable and affordable for you, just make sure they are of the closed type. If headphones are too bulky, have a look at in-ear sealed earbuds, e.g. from Shure, Sennheiser or Ultimate Ears . The type musicians use on-stage are best. Make sure they have a 3.5mm connector. Best place to get those is a good musical instrument store.
At prop aircraft noise levels a set of noise cancelling headphones will probably not work.

Yes, the ATV2 only streams. It has an 8gb cache that stores the film as you watch it but you cannot use it as a hard-drive.
I believe you can rent HD movies on the computer, albeit a more limited selection. Even so you won't have any format issues.

Workflow and General Use Questions

I'll apologize right off the bat for these novice question because I'm sure the information is probably somewhere in the forum, I just haven't been able to find it. I just purchased Aperture after completing the demo as my library is getting too large to manage using standard file folders. I'm now trying to figure out the best practices for workflow and general use before I invest some serious time into importing and keywording all my pictures.
1) Store files in the there current location, or in the Aperture Library? It seems to me that once they are moved to the Aperture library, you can only access them from within Aperture. I'm thinking I would be better off leaving them in their current location. For one, if I want to quickly grab a picture as an attachment to an email or something it seems easier to grab it from the standard folders. Second (and more important) I do not have room to keep all my pictures on my Macbook, thus most of them are stored on the Time Capsule.
So... Keeping photos in their current location appears to be the best choice for me even though it adds an additional step every time I bring in new photos from my camera. Does this sound right?
2) Is there a way to mark the photos that I have uploaded to my website (Smugmug)? Ideally, I would like to badge photos that have already been uploaded so I can quickly recognize them and ensure I'm not duplicating. I've considered using the rating, or keywords to indicate that a photo has been uploaded but both methods have disadvantages.
3) Any suggestions for general workflow and organization resources (tutorials, books, websites, etc.)? I've looked at the videos on Apple's site but they obviously didn't get that detailed.

I recommend to Manage by Reference with Master image files stored on external hard drives (note that Aperture defaults to a Managed-Library configuration rather than a Referenced-Masters Library). Especially important for iMacs and laptops with a single internal drive. The workflow as described below in an earlier post of mine uses a Referenced-Masters Library.
I feel pretty strongly that card-to-Aperture or camera-to-Aperture handling of original images puts originals at unnecessary risk. I suggest this workflow, first using the Finder (not Aperture) to copy images from CF card to computer hard drive:
• Remove the memory card from the camera and insert it into a memory card reader. Faster readers and faster cards are preferable.
• Finder-copy images from memory card to a labeled folder on the intended permanent Masters location hard drive.
• Eject memory card.
• Burn backup hard drive or DVD copies of the original images (optional strongly recommended recommended backup step).
• Eject backup hard drive(s) or DVDs.
• From within Aperture, import images from the hard drive folder into Aperture selecting "Store files in their current location." This is called "referenced images." During import is the best time to also add keywords, but that is another discussion.
• Review pix for completeness (e.g. a 500-pic shoot has 500 valid images showing in Aperture).
• Reformat memory card in camera, and archive originals off site on hard drives and/or on DVDs.
Note that the "eject" steps above are important in order to avoid mistakenly working on removable media/backups.
Also note with a Referenced-Masters Library that use of the "Vault" backup routine backs up the Library only, not the Masters. Masters should be separately backed up, IMO a good thing from a workflow and data security standpoint.
Max out RAM in your MB and keep the internal drive less than 70% full.

Which is the best MacBook for general use

Hi, I am already use to using Apple as I have other products from them, including an IMac. However I am not sure which MacBook to get, whether the Pro or Air. I will be using it for general use at home and about, but also for school work. Which one is better (including their specific advantages I.e graphics) and which one would benefit me most according to my needs?
Any help would be appreciated.

The Air is lighter, but the Pro has the better specs. It will depend an little on if you want more portability or more power.
By definition the MacBook Air has lower general specs than the Pro. Graphics will not matter much with light school work and general usage. But as a rule of thumb, the Pro gets the better cards.
You may be o.k with an air, but if you can afford the Pro, go with the Pro.

Does a nonstandard(created by you) become available for general use?

if you don't have a standard bapi available for some transaction you require, can you create your own bapi and use it ? is it allowed ? does such a bapi become available for general use from then on like the standard ones? otherwise who else can use it?

Adobe Flash 11 General Use

Hello, I have a question regarding the Adobe Flash Player 11 license. In section 3.1 General use, in the product license, it states the following: "You may install and Use one copy of the Software on your Compatible Computer." How does this, if at all, apply to a dual boot computer. I run a Windows 7/ Ubuntu 12.04 computer and have Adobe Flash Player installed on Windows 7. Would it be contrary to the license terms if I also install Adobe Flash in Ubuntu?

Generally with Adobe licensing, a separate boot instance or virtual machine is counted as a "computer." Since you have two of those, but would run one copy on each, you you should be okay with that.

Toast probably maintains better quality if you are just doing simple conversion direct from your camera straight into Toast and then to DVD. There's a lot less transcoding steps and loss of quality in that direct to DVD disk creation in Toast. However, having said that,...There's good arguments probably for both.
What I've seen promoted most often (as most people don't have Toast or aren't motivated to buy it) is to Share to Media Browser (choose the Large size option) and then from inside iDVD click the Media Button and the Movies button to find the project under the iMovie star icon in the Media Browser window. Drag that project into your iDVD project and burn the disk.

Import "general use" certificate for use with Exchange

Usually (that's the way I've always done it), we create a certificate request on the Exchange server, submit the request to the certificate authority (preferably a 3rd party public CA) and then import and enable the certificate for the appropriate Exchange
functions: IIS, SMTP, IMAP. POP, for example.
What if the company already has a wildcard certificate obtained for others uses or general use (that's how it was described to me).
It was suggested that we might just use that certificate...
I think it would be best to "go by the book" and proceed as mentioned above (creation of cert request on the Exchange server, submission to CA, and so forth). After all, you can obtain a certificate appropriate for use with Exchange for just over
$50.
But is the other option even possible?
I know you can export an Exchange certificate obtained by what I believe to be the preferred way and import it on another Exchange server or on a ISA/TMG machine.
But could you export a certificate from an Apache web server or a firewall device or... just something else, and use it for Exchange?

But from what I know about Active Directory Certificate Services, there are all kinds of templates for various uses (disk encryption, email, code signing, etc.), presumably not interchangeable.

So you want to export the existing wildcard certificate from a non-Windows system and import it to the Exchange server, correct?
The article shows that openssl will create a PFX (PKCS#12) file - so this should work.
I would not worry about templates. If the existing certificate is a SSL certificate (Extended Key Usage = Server Authentication) it should be OK.
From "PKI Best Practices" perspective / "what a certificate actually is intended to be" it would be better to have a dedicated certificate including all the Subject Alternative Names needed by Exchange - but I know there are limitations to a certain number
of names by public CAs. But theoretically if you ever wanted to revoke this wildcard certificate you would get into troubles as the same certificate is on very different systems.

General Error Issue: FCP 7 on my Mac Book Pro 10.6.8 2.53 GHZ 4GB

I'm working on a lengthy project, multiple timelines. Out of nowhere I started getting a "General Error" message on playback in a specific area of the timeline. I trash preferences, trash render preferences (making the timeline now red), and now the "General Error" pops up everywhere on the timeline on playback and render.
After trying everything I could think of:
1. resetting scratch disks
2. trashing preferences
3. trashing render preferences
4. repairing hard drives
5. Converting to earlier saved versions of the project.
6. Re installing FCP
7. Finally, I tried creating a new project and dropping the original media in and recutting (matching timecode) and even this popped up the general error.
I'm cutting converted RED one footage and 16mm footage converted to quicktime files. I am only using about 1/2 of the harddrive space on my comp, and the scratch disks are currently set to a 2TB external G Drive with 500GB left.
This project has existed for over 9months that I've been tinkering with it and all of a sudden this issue appears. I find it strange.
I wasn't super organized in setting up the project (my first large film and first film ever on fcp), and the scratch disks have moved around a lot, etc. But, I've never moved the original clips, and it doesn't seem to be an issue of relinking the clips either. They don't seem to be offline at all.
The format of is super wide 2240 x 960 on the red footage and super square for the 16mm footage (I think 4x3)
Let me know if you have ANY thoughts/ideas/help or if you need additional info.

General Performance Issue

In the last few days I've noticed a general degradation in the on-line performance of my iMac. For example, when I select a mail message that is heavy on graphics (like a Home Depot flyer or something) the text displays and then after four or five seconds the graphics are painted. Until recently, the actions would have been simultaneous and immediate. Also, I've noticed that web sites (the first page) are taking three or four seconds to load. I have cable and I don't believe my connection is an issue on this. In the old days (prior to my born-again in the Mac world birth) I would have done some tinkering with my PC but I'm not sure where to start on my iMac. Thanks.

Sometimes the web browser cache files can get corrupted, or the hard drive gets slow reading the cache. Try emptying the cache using the function of the browser itself.
As for e-mail, it is strongly advisable you do not load HTML e-mail with e-mail programs, but instead turn off all HTML rendering in e-mail, save such messages to the desktop, and reopen with your web browser. HTML e-mail is not fully supported on any e-mail client:

General Downloading issues

Is it just me, or does the Oracle download, and web site in general, not seem to want to work correctly?
I have been trying to download JDeveloper 10g for the last two days now and keep getting 404 errors. After looking through this forum for a few minutes, i see i am not the only one with these issues. I have also seen Oracle's database at work in an application my school uses with many problems, such as freaking out if you click the Back button. If Oracle can not even get its own software to work correctly on its own site, why will anyone else want to use it? Call me crazy, but that does not seem like good advertising.
On a more constructive note, i would suggest finding out why links do not work for so many downloads and get them fixed.

General authentication issues

I have a general issue with authenticating usernames and passwords. starting with remote desktop connection to my win 8 laptop 6 days a go i was able to connect to it from the internet with no problems, now for some reason i can't connect to it i can see the window asking for a log in info so it can see the computer but it doesn't accept my log in info, i also have win 2008 server computer on the same LAN and i can connect to it from the outside.
same thing with my FTP service i can connect to my FTP from the internet using IE but when it asks for username and password it doesn't accept them.
SAME PROBLEM WITH VPN i used to e able to connect to my LAN from the outside internet and now while it's verifying username and password for VPN it doesn't accept them.
Iam basically looking at an authentication issue not a connection because i see that i can connect to these services until authentication level then authentication doesn't work.
Any Ideas?

Normally I would use FLAC for quality but since Itunes doesn't support it I use mp3. Good albums I do both. Is there a plugin so I don't need 2 copies of my music?
You can try the Xiph plugins to play your FLAC files. Some people have reported success while others have had problems, but it would be worth trying.
When I drag the music in to the play list Itunes takes between 5-10 minutes to add the songs and do its gap less playback check, etc.. Itunes is hung the entire time and does not respond. Is this normal?
How many tracks do you have in your library? If it's really large (many thousands of tracks), the delay may be normal.
it says it's getting the artwork but it only gets the art work may be 1 out 20 albums I import. Is there a way to select the art work manually?
If you search the web for "iTunes album art" you'll find a lot of methods for getting album artwork into iTunes.
