General weirdness

Hi all,
I've just noticed some general weirdness when booting my machine.
1. The volume controls have disappeared from my top bar. When I set it in the prefs to show, initially it does, with the slider to the top, but I have no audio. I just turned on itunes to test it, and the volume icon disappeared again.
2. The Top Sites icon in the Safari toolbar has disappeared. I reset Safari, but no icon.

We may have deeper issues, but try this first...
Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions...
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
/Users/<yourname>/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systemuiserver.plist
/Users/<yourname>/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.systemuiserver.xxx.plist
where 'xxx' is a 12 digit (hexadecimal) numeric string.
This will reset your Menu Bar to the default, you'll need to go through System Preferences to reset the ones you need. (If they are already checked, uncheck them first and then recheck them).

  • General Weirdness going on in 10.4.7 - Any ideas?

I've got all sorts of weird little problems going on right now.
Basically it all adds up to me having to log out of my machine or shutdown every few days.
I have no idea what's going on.

The biggest commonality I see in all this is the error 'couldn't fork'. All of this has been going on for about a couple of months now and continued doing so even after I did a system wipe a restore.
All I use this laptop for is WoW, e-mail, writing papers, web browsing and iTunes. Other than WoW (for which I admitedly need to buy more RAM) there's nothing super taxing going on with the system.

Never got an answer on this - problem just went away and didn't re-occur

  • Just general "weirdness"

After many, many years of Firefox being my default browser, it's now become unusable.
About 6 weeks ago, the BBC iPlayer radio stopped working correctly.
Now the browser randomly goes partially or wholly black.
Also, when I close the browser (with multiple tabs open), when reloaded, it displays a single page. Closing & reloading again brings up the "well this is embarrassing" screen with the tabs listed below.
I tried the "refresh" thing - made no difference. What have you done to it?
    PS: Typing this in IE.

What computer and Firefox are you using?
Start '''[https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-firefox-issues-using-safe-mode Firefox in Safe Mode]''' {web Link} by holding down the '''<Shift ''(Mac Options)'' >''' key, and then starting Firefox. Is the problem still there?

  • Problem with Flash in Chrome

Recently my Flash has been acting generally weird. I cannot view certain flash videos, although youtube works, and Flash is not allowing me to set websites store data, making it impossible to use many flash-dependent websites. When I attempt to fix this with the Flash global settings manager, it simply does not save my choices, and does not even let me click the "Allow third party Flash content to store data on your computer", which is what I need to fix it. Also, even if I make sure I am signed in, every time I navigate to the Global Settings Security page, it seems to log me out. Any help with allowing Flash to save my settings, or why videos aren't working in Chrome?

    Try the following
close all browser windows and open Windows Explorer
in the address bar type %appdata%\Adobe
delete the 'Flash Player' folder in there
in the address bar type %appdata%\Macromedia
delete the 'Flash Player' folder in there
Now try again to change any Flash Player settings.

  • Solaris 10 x86 cdrw trouble.  Gnome and command line problems writing.

I'm experiencing general weirdness trying to write CD's and DVD's using a new internal DVD-RW device -- It's a Sony NEC AD 7220 A CD / DVD RW drive on a Solaris 10 x86 AMD system. I have searched far and wide for other threads of similar instances but no one has posted an issue like the one I'm having.
    I have a Sony Optiarc AD 7220 A CD-RW on a x86 AMD Athalon 1.6 ghz based server with 2 GB RAM.
The DVD-RW drive gets detected by BIOS (Phoenix TrustedCore 2.3) and reads disks fine. I installed Solaris 10.08 from DVD using this DVD-RW drive.
However, trying to write to new blank media does not work properly, (effectively at all).
I've tried different brands of brands of blank CD's and CD-R and CD+R (have not tried using CD-RW disks yet). Ditto with DVD's - tried DVD-R and DVD+R's.
    1. Inside the Solaris 10 GUI (Gnome, a.k.a. Java Desktop), when I put in a blank CD-R, a dialog box "Format Media...?" pops up. If I click "Ok" it formats the blank CD and closes the session, CD has been written to and is ruined.
    2. I open a terminal window, as root, and put in a blank CD. "mkisofs –r /home/foo 2>/dev/null | cdrw –i –p 1" will write a directory tree OK, but if I go back into gnome GUI and open and close the CD tray, again, up pops the "Format Media..." dialog box instead of the CD appearing on the desktop. If I restart vold (svcadm restart volfs) then open and close the CD tray, voila, the contents appear on desktop as CD icon.
    3. When I try to write to a DVD-R: "cdrw -i /local/iso_image" It always fails with: Write Track 1....Failed. after a few minutes. It did in fact write part of the .iso but bails out with a failure.
I've tried various other write commands (specifying the device ID, speed, so on and so forth) and command line switch options (following the rules of course) and it seems to me to be more than a syntax / media issue. However if it is I would like to know. I did see a similar CDRW device on the HCL for OpenSolaris with a 'reported to work' rating. That was for a Optiarc AD-5200A, which is going away thus my company has chosen to use the AD 7220A in speciality racks we build and deliver to the U.S. Navy.
I really need to get a handle on this CD-RW device issue and decide if a different brand / model is what it's going to take to solve this and move on to producing and delivering these systems in working conditions.

Sony systems are often very particular about what CD's and DVD's they'll take. I have several Sony systems that I use for video work and they'll read almost anything but they'll only write to DVD RW.  They also don't like cheap brand CD's and DVD's.  Be sure to try both CD RW and DVD RW before doing anything else.  Because of the requirement for DVD RW, they won't take fast speed (16x) DVD's, just 4x. If all of this turns out to be the case, you may want to go with a different manufacturer for the drive, DVD +RW 4x aren't always easy to find in the store.

  • 2008 Mac Pro, Lion, and a flaky mouse?

For some reason, shortly after upgrading to Mac OS X Lion, my 2008 Mac Pro has developed intermitent problems with my Logitech Desktop Wave mouse. The problem seems primarily associated with the left mouse button and includes problems selecting files and highlighting text, problems dragging, random double-clicks, and general weirdness.
Here's what I've done so far:
    Replaced the mouse batteries
Updated to the latest version of the Logitech Control Center (3.5.1-23)
Checked the system preferences for Mouse, Universal Access, and the Logitech Control Center
    Reset the PRAM
    Restarted the MacPro
Nothing works. I even substituted my existing Logitech mouse for another one and the problem remains. This has gotten to the point where it's driving me absolutely batty. The only thing that I haven't checked is the PRAM battery inside my MacPro, which is about 4 years old, but I'm not having any problems with the date and time resetting, which is usually indicative of a failing PRAM battery. Please help me save my sanity.
    Thanks,
    Kelly

At idle, kernel_task is running at .3-.5%, but disconnecting and reconnecting the DVI connectors didn't have any effect for me.
Plus, I'm not really having issues with jumpiness, as the user's post describes. My mouse problem has more to do with not being able to click and drag windows on the first attempt, the inability to click and drag lines of text, random double clicks instead of single clicks, and stuff like that.
However, if kernel_task is suppose to idle at 1-2%, that's clealry not happening.

  • Nieoczekiwany b∏àd: Error opening resource fork of Dict -35

Anybody have any idea what the following error message during load of CS3 apps (I get it in ID, PS, and AI) might mean?
Nieoczekiwany b∏àd: Error opening resource fork of Dict -35
I was recently forced to upgrade to Leopard, and ever since then I have gotten this error, but only on this machine (first gen MacBook Pro 1.83 GHz 15"), but not on an iMac I installed it on to try to to identify the problem's source.
I did a clean system install and then Migration Assistant to bring in my apps and user accounts. But I since completely uninstalled CS3 from my machine (and even did a manual search to get rid of Adobe debris on the hard drive), but it is still there upon a reinstall. If I could figure out what this weird mix of Polish and English means and what error code -35 is, I might be able to fix the problem. There is some other general weirdness as well, like text export from InDesign failing or producing weird results like looping through three paragraphs multiple times and leaving everything else in a story out (or exporting NOTHING), and I wonder if these are related.
(For what it's worth, I tried running CS3 in a new user account and got the identical error!)
    Best,
    Arle

Thanks for the suggestion, but I'm hoping to get more specific on the error to resolve it without the many hours of work needed to rebuilt a user account from data only and reinstall every application. Chances are that a single file somewhere is corrupt or need to have something done (like a change in permissions).
Frankly, I'd rather live with a modal error box popping up when CS3 applications start because rebuilding from the ground up is an even bigger pain...
I realize that you're telling me the "right thing" to do, but it is something like telling someone with indigestion to get their stomach pumped in terms of the inconvenience it will cause relative to the actual problem.

  • Disappearing DV25 clip video

    Hi there....
Had a interesting situation develop with FCS 5 and our Quad G5 system, all footage on a external FW800 drive, latest OS and 8Gig of RAM....
Editing a DV25 project (NTSC-DV 720x480) project sequence[s] lost all video (bin and sequences), audio however was retained. I closed the project reopened, same... shut the system down, booted after 30 minutes, the same -- few hours later, video re-apppeared in ALL project sequence clips (note: ALL video in this project is DV25)
This has never happened before. Anyone else experience this?
    Thanks
    David Healy

    That is strange.
FWIW, after our similar problem we did what we usually do when confronted with general weirdness.
Trashed FCP Preferences with FCP Rescue.
Gave the drives a going over with Disk Warrior (directories were very fragmented)
    Deleted render files and re-rendered.
I still don't know exactly why it happened but it's running fine now. If I had to guess I'd say Disk Warrior was what fixed it up. I think it's an indispensable utility for FCP drives. Often helps, never hurts and has saved many a butt more than once. If you don't have it you should get it... well worth the investment.
    Good Luck

  • Directory damage and fallout -- looking for root cause

One of the G5s (2x 2.7GHz, 4.5 GB RAM, 250 GB HD) I support at work started exhibiting erratic behavior yesterday (spinning ball, slow app launch, general weirdness) and I told the user to reboot. He did, and the grey pinwheel screen came up and it sat there spinning for a while and then went wind-tunnel with black screen.
I powered it back on and went into single-user mode and did fsck -fy and got a host of errors. Not thinking it wouldn't fix things, I don't remember what the initial errors were, but there were a lot of them. Missing files maybe?
Anyhow, it couldn't repair everything. The errors I then got were:
Incorrect number of thread records (4, 228)
    and
    Invalid volume file count
I booted with TechTool 4.x and it found errors as well but could not repair. I then bought DiskWarrior and booted up another Mac and plugged the G5 in via firewire disk mode. I rebuild the directory and rebooted the G5 into single user mode and fsck gave me a clean bill of health.
I rebooted again and it passed through the grey screen and "hung" on the blue screen prior to login for about 30 mins before I lost patience and rebooted in verbose mode.
In verbose mode, everything seemed to go well until I got the following message every three seconds...
    ...waiting for IFC
At that point, I left it to do its thing and came back this morning to the login window.
I then rebooted the machine again and it "hung" on the blue screen again.
Right now I am imaging the internal drive over to another drive. I am just going to rebuild the machine now, but what I really want to know is what is this IFC service that it was waiting for?
(Unfortunately the rebuild will take a while since it has both Adobe CS2 AND Final Cut Pro -- two long installs that require multiple DVD swaps)
    --Mike

    Michael,
Disk repair utilities, when they work, will return your file system to a "consistent state," but they cannot restore data that may have been lost as a result of the disk error. In other words, even after a successful repair, you may still have damaged files.
If the damaged files happen to be critical system files, the machine "won't go." Period.
The original cause could be one or more of several things. If the user that "rebooted" the machine had to perform a forced shutdown, doing so would only have aggravated the issue, causing further errors and damage. The original cause could have been a bad block on the drive, or it could simply have been a "tired" file system.
If you want to get ahead of the game somewhat, I would recommend that you "zero" the drive (with the drive selected in Disk Utility, not the "volume" on the drive). This will map out any potential bad blocks, thereby eliminating the possible need to go through this again in the near future.
Also, be aware that any "image" of the volume in question will, itself, remain damaged. I would recommend that you attempt to recover only user data from this backup; do not attempt to "restore" it using Disk Utility.

  • High process count - is this normal? and what's up with 10.6.6?

Among other aspects of the general weirdness I've noticed occurring on my machine (which seems to have started around when I installed 10.6.6), I've noticed that the PID numbers in Activity Monitor have recently skyrocketed. I used to go for two weeks or a month before seeing PID numbers in the 30-50k range (and even that is high in comparison to a year or two ago), but now they're much higher, much sooner.
For example: it's been 2 days and an hour since my last reboot (according to uptime), and I'm now showing processes in the mid 99k range. I have several background apps installed, but still—99 thousand processes come and gone in just over two days? Seriously? Given what I remember as normal over the past couple of years, this seems insanely high.
Again, given this and the other weirdness I've had (mainly sluggishness), seemingly since around when I installed 10.6.6, it makes me wonder what is going on. I've got 4 GB of RAM and over 50 GB of free HD space; the computer uses only about 1 GB of that following a fresh boot (Safari seems to be the biggest RAM hog, partially because of extensions, so I try to quit it fairly regularly). Is 10.6.6 a buggy release or something?
Any thoughts on what might be going on (mainly for the PID thing but also the general weirdness) would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Background apps installed: Sophos AntiVirus, TechTool Pro, Dropbox, FlashFrozen, MenuPop, OpenDNS Updater, Growl, MagiCal, SIMBL. Most of these, notably Sophos and SIMBL, were installed before this sluggishness started.

Thanks. I read through the Console logs, and I only found a few things that seemed to repeat. A lot of entries similar to this one:

    And this one:

And a small handful of these:
    Mar 5 20:35:12 [computer-name] loginwindow[30]: in pamsmauthenticate(): Failed to
    determine Kerberos principal name.
Although I think the WebKit entries would seem to explain the VM churning I've had lately (I don't think I mentioned that earlier because it seems unrelated; turning off Safari extensions makes it go away)—so I'm playing with which extensions I have turned on and off to try to figure that out—those messages don't seem to suggest something which is (re)starting a ton of processes. I read through that page you referred me to and searched the logs for those terms (like "exited with code", "throttling respawn", etc.), but nothing came up.
I checked the launchagents folders, as the page suggested, and in my personal folder, I have a launch agent for gconsync (Google Contact Sync), and in the /Library folder, I have ones for GoogleSoftwareUpdateAgent, Micromat's TechtoolProAgent, and SIMBL. Other than the duplicated functionality messages related to SIMBL, none of the others show excessive messages (or many at all, for that matter).
I know what you're saying about the lack of viruses, but I must admit that I'm surprised to hear that people are having trouble with Sophos. I'm familiar with the behavior of anti-virus software on Windows (performance killer), and I remember being not so thrilled with NAV 8 and 10, which I had installed years and years ago on an old machine, so I thought I'd try out Sophos, be unimpressed, and get rid of it. On the contrary, it has been the most unobtrusive, least bothersome anti-virus app I've ever seen. I haven't felt a performance drag from it since I installed it (it's been several months), and haven't seen anything weird that I could specifically link to Sophos. I decided to search the logs for "sophos" to see if something bad was happening behind the scenes, but all that came up was a handful of installer entries for virus updates.
I have a nagging hunch that maaaaybe this has something to do with a Safari extension gone wild. I find it hard to believe that extensions would be capable of intentionally spawning processes, but what about unintentionally somehow? Hmm...
    Anyway, any thoughts? Much appreciated!

  • I think I pushed my MBP too far.

I think I may have finally pushed my newly purchased Macbook Pro to its thermal limit..
I wasn't running CoreDuoTemp, but I'm convinced the sucker hit 100 degrees C and almost imploded on itself..
So here I am, playing some World of Warcraft for a good 4-5 hours. MBP is wicked hot after this time (it usually gets hot, but not this much), all of a sudden I start hearing whirring and clicking noises from the right hand side (where the Right fan is, along with the GPU).
Finally the noises get louder and louder, so I quickly turn off the laptop in the hopes to prevent damage.
Let the MBP cool for a few minutes, turn it back on, it boots into OSX but spinning beach balls everywhere, network dropping like mad, just general weird stuff, plus the clicking noises and wwhirring noises are still there.
I shut it off for a good 2-3 hours and turned it back on. Everything "seems" to work, however, there is a whirring noise on the right side where the fan/gpu is (although not as pronounced).
I don't dare start anything intensive.. This thing was so hot that the keys on the keyboard started heating up to a point where they were uncomfortable. Pressing down on keys such as F, J, etc was like pressing the tip of your finger onto scolding pavement in the summer heat.
Besides that, guess I have to call Apple tomorrow.. I've also noticed two other things since I've had my MBP.. 1) The screen doesn't seem to close correctly. Bottom right corner of the screen assembley (where the screw is) is quite scratched from that part rubbing on the corner of the base of the MBP. 2) When I put my Serial Number in the Apple site, it tells me that my laptop has a Glossy screen (I ordered Matte). I can't confirm this as I haven't owned a laptop before and haven't used this one outside. I can't say I notice a glare on it however.
Anyway, I hope applecare is quick with it, until then it's on my Windows box I work.

Sorry to hear about yoru ahrdware problems. Hopefully apple will figur eotu what ever may be wrong - however it kind of sounds to me that it may jsut be one of teh fans bearings for the noise.. Hopefully that's all ti is and they will get it back to you quickly.
I do, obviosuly, believe it got pretty toasty to say the least, however i doubt the cpu got to above 100, as at 100 C the machien will shut down due to the thermal sensors for the cpu reaching thier limit, I beleive its 100, i may be wrong, however.
As for the serial sayign glossy - mine too says the same, and its matte. When i brought it into an apple place for getting the thermal paste redone (friend is the tech) he put the # in and all as needed jsut incase anuything wereto happen, to say ti was serviced, and it brought it up saying glossy. I guess something just got confused while the ordering took place. i'm sure it makes no diffrence at all.

  • My wife's computer won't see me as "online"

My wife has an AIM account and is using a Macbook Pro. I have a Macbook Pro and am using Mac.com. I can see my wife as being online, but she shows me being offline. I can initiate and connect to my wife via video chat, but she cannot because her computer shows me as being offline. What am I missing?

    Hi,
If you can see her as On-line can you contact her ?
With any Chat Window (with you) open she should go to the Buddies Menu.
In here is the Add Buddy item which when a live chat window is Open allows you to Add the Buddy by name.
One thing to do is to mouse over your Off-line Buddy so she can read the Screen Name (presuming she has you in the Address Book).
She can then check spelling and type of account.
I would say that in the past two weeks there does seem to be general weirdness with AIM or names that can log into AIM being a bit odd at times.

    Hi Guys,
I am trying to get the info(font, color, alignment etc.)  of text kind layer in Photoshop CC. My script is as follows,

If I set some other color value and other alignment and create the text and get its info, script works fine.
Or If I change the values and revert it back to 'Left' alignment and R-0, B-0 and G-0 then I am able to get the values with the above script.
I get this error at first time only and after that script works fine
I also run this script with CS5 version, Its working fine there. But I don't know why I am getting this error in CC version.
Am I doing something wrong here or Is it some issue with Photoshop CC.
    Any help would be appriciated.
    Thanks..

  • MacbookPro Mid 2012 13" weird crash window (sometimes during gameplay)

    Hey guys...
strange error occurs even don't really know how to describe, I'll try but the video will describe it better, of course.
    Configuration:
    Macbook Pro 13" Mid 2012
    8gb RAM (originally 4gb, self upgrade to 8gb (Corsair Vengeance SoDimm CL9 PC3-12800 8GB 1600MHz DD3-RAM Kit))
    Intel HD 4000
    Mountain Lion
    Error:
Reproducible: Yes! (Many times), by playing a game (simple games like Virtual City Playground, or some real games like Starcraft II)
    Description:
Playing a game or sometimes without running any real heavy applications/ games my MBP totally freaks out. Flickering on the screen and a weird repeating warn-signal or whatever appears so that I can't do anything than turning it completely off by using the Power-Button. After a restart Macbook Spotlight indicates again and it seems like the TimeMachine Update needs a lot more time to run, to analyse where it stopped or whatever. Please take a look on the Vid, to see the error. Applications and everything seem to be up-to-date. For me it seems like a graphic-card issue, but can't remember having this problem using Lion (but had Lion just a week or two, so not a lot of experience with it).

    11.09.12 22:16:06,148 ClamXavSentry[286]: I will quarantine infected files
This doesn't have anything to do with your problem, but it will likely cause other issues with your e-mail.
Here's my standard recommendation concerting the use of A-V software to deal with potentially infected messages:
Never use ClamXav (or any other A-V software) to move (quarantine) or delete e-mail. It will corrupt the mailbox index which could cause loss of other e-mail and other issues with functions such as searching. It may also leave the original e-mail on your ISP's e-mail server and will be re-downloaded to your hard drive the next time you check for new mail.
So, if you choose to "Scan e-mail content for malware and phishing" in the General Preferences, make sure you do not elect to either Quarantine or Delete infected files.
When possibly infected e-mail files are found:
Right-click/Control-click on either the infection or file name in the ClamXav window.
Select "Reveal In Finder" from the pop-up menu.
When the window opens, double-click on the file to open the message in your e-mail client application.
Read the message and if you agree that it is junk/spam/phishing then use the e-mail client's delete button to delete it (this is especially important when the word "Heuristics" appears in the infection name).
If you disagree and choose to retain the message, return to ClamXav and choose "Exclude From Future Scans" from the pop-up menu.
If this is a g-mail account and those messages continue to show up after you have deleted them in the above manner, you may need to log in to webmail using your browser, go to the "All Mail" folder, find the message(s) and use the delete button there to permanently delete them from the server.
To fix the corrupted mailbox index(es), highlight each one that was corrupted and choose Rebuild from the appropriate menu.

  • In-Place Element Structures, References and Pointers, Compiler Optimization, and General Stupidity

[The title of this forum is "Labview Ideas". Although this is NOT a direct suggestion for a change or addition to Labview, it seems appropriate to me to post it in this forum.]
In-Place Element Structures, References and Pointers, Compiler Optimization, and General Stupidity
I'd like to see NI actually start a round-table discussion about VI references, Data Value references, local variables, compiler optimizations, etc. I'm a C programmer; I'm used to pointers. They are simple, functional, and well defined. If you know the data type of an object and have a pointer to it, you have the object. I am used to compilers that optimize without the user having to go to weird lengths to arrange it.
The 'reference' you get when you right click and "Create Reference" on a control or indicator seems to be merely a shorthand read/write version of the Value property that can't be wired into a flow-of-control (like the error wire) and so causes synchronization issues and race conditions. I try not to use local variables.
I use references a lot like C pointers; I pass items to SubVIs using references. But the use of references (as compared to C pointers) is really limited, and the implementation is insconsistent, not factorial in capabilites, and buggy. For instance, why can you pass an array by reference and NOT be able to determine the size of the array EXCEPT by dereferencing it and using the "Size Array" VI? I can even get references for all array elements; but I don't know how many there are...! Since arrays are represented internally in Labview as handles, and consist of basically a C-style pointer to the data, and array sizing information, why is the array handle opaque? Why doesn't the reference include operators to look at the referenced handle without instantiating a copy of the array? Why isn't there a "Size Array From Reference" VI in the library that doesn't instantiate a copy of the array locally, but just looks at the array handle?
Data Value references seem to have been invented solely for the "In-Place Element Structure". Having to write the code to obtain the Data Value Reference before using the In-Place Element Structure simply points out how different a Labview reference is from a C pointer. The Labview help page for Data Value References simply says "Creates a reference to data that you can use to transfer and access the data in a serialized way.".  I've had programmers ask me if this means that the data must be accessed sequentially (serially)...!!!  What exactly does that mean? For those of use who can read between the lines, it means that Labview obtains a semaphore protecting the data references so that only one thread can modify it at a time. Is that the only reason for Data Value References? To provide something that implements the semaphore???
The In-Place Element Structure talks about minimizing copying of data and compiler optimization. Those kind of optimizations are built in to the compiler in virtually every other language... with no special 'construct' needing to be placed around the code to identify that it can be performed without a local copy. Are you telling me that the Labview compiler is so stupid that it can't identify certain code threads as needing to be single-threaded when optimizing? That the USER has to wrap the code in semaphores before the compiler can figure out it should optimize??? That the compiler cannot implement single threading of parts of the user's code to improve execution efficiency?
Instead of depending on the user base to send in suggestions one-at-a-time it would be nice if NI would actually host discussions aimed at coming up with a coherent and comprehensive way to handle pointers/references/optimization etc. One of the reasons Labview is so scattered is because individual ideas are evaluated and included without any group discussion about the total environment. How about a MODERATED group, available by invitation only (based on NI interactions with users in person, via support, and on the web) to try and get discussions about Labview evolution going?
Based solely on the number of Labview bugs I've encountered and reported, I'd guess this has never been done, with the user community, or within NI itself.....

Here are some articles that can help provide some insights into LabVIEW programming and the LabVIEW compiler. They are both interesting and recommended reading for all intermediate-to-advanced LabVIEW programmers.

    VI Memory Usage
The second article is a little out-of-date, as it doesn't discuss some of the newer technologies available such as the In-Place Element Structure you were referring to. However, many of the general concepts still apply. Some general notes from your post:
    1. I think part of your confusion is that you are trying to use control references and local variables like you would use variables in a C program. This is not a good analogy. Control references are references to user interface controls, and should almost always be used to control the behavior and appearance of those controls, not to store or transmit data like a pointer. LabVIEW is a dataflow language. Data is intended to be stored or transmitted through wires in most cases, not in references. It is admittedly difficult to make this transition for some text-based programmers. Programming efficiently in LabVIEW sometimes requires a different mindset.
    2. The LabVIEW compiler, while by no means perfect, is a complicated, feature-rich set of machinery that includes a large and growing set of optimizations. Many of these are described in the first link I posted. This includes optimizations you'd find in many programming environments, such as dead code elimination, inlining, and constant folding. One optimization in particular is called inplaceness, which is where LabVIEW determines when buffers can be reused. Contrary to your statement, the In-Place Element Structure is not always required for this optimization to take place. There are many circumstances (dating back years before the IPE structure) where LabVIEW can determine inplaceness and reuse buffers. The IPE structure simply helps users enforce inplaceness in some situations where it's not clear enough on the diagram for the LabVIEW compiler to make that determination.
The more you learn about programming in LabVIEW, the more you realize that inplaceness itself is the closest analogy to pointers in C, not control references or data references or other such things. Those features have their place, but core, fundamental LabVIEW programming does not require them.
