Generate a PS in Indesign CS5 - PPD problem

I am a little publisher and I migrated to Indesign from Xpress several years ago.
I've recently installed the CS5 Premium suite and I'm very upset about the new version of Indesign. I discovered (with my surprise) that in the print window it's impossible create a PS file using a PPD different from the system installed printers.
In the previous CS4 I was able to create PS file using the Acrobat ppd.
I known that inside Indesign there is a good Acrobat engine which exports pdf files but, often, the CTP services have a lot of problems with the recent PDF release (version after 1.4). In the mean time if I create a PDF 1.4 directly from Indesign I can't  use the lossless jpeg 2000 compression. Instead, before (CS4), I was able to generate a PS file, where all effects were rasterized and after that I distilled it with Acrobat Distiller as a pdf 1.6 with the Jpeg 2000 compression. This way was perfect to avoid any kind of problem. I can't understand why Adobe decide to remove this stupid opportunity, if it's a little war against Apple I think that the only damage is reserved to their clients. Pls. Adobe modifies the print window in order to permit the use of different ppd; not necessarily the only ones relating the installed printers.
Pls. forgive my poor english.
Riccardo

I had what seems to be a similar issue when my CS4 updated. The printer
PPD for writing a poscript file dumped out. Not good!!!  I searched for a re
solution on the adobe site for about an hour. No luck as well.
I did however came up with a rather simple fix. Apparently when the update ran it cut off the PPD link for Acrobat pro 9.0. This in prefence to the update that system set up to export out as a PDF. As you know this does not work for a lot of reasons.
What I did (on 7.0 system but should work on Vista etc.) go to your Devices/Printers, add a printer, when propted you can assign one of two Adobe PDF options as a printer. Once I did this the PPD automatically reappeard in the PPD window under the postscript option. I ran some tests and it appears to work perfectly.
GOOD LUCK if you havn't already resolved the problem

  • Interactive pdf using Indesign CS5.5 problem with layering

    Hi all
    I have designed an interactive pdf - not for the web. I have a problem layering out a page. On the page there are 6 buttons. Each button when pressed will bring forward a box containing content/information. When I designed the page using indesign cs5.5 I made sure the largest box of information was at the top of the layer. I thought this would be the cleanest way to present the page. By having the largest content box (each of the six content boxes are different sizes) at the top it would cover the other boxes. When I exported the file out the smallest box was at the top, then the secondest etc. It looks pretty messy.
    Is there a way to ensure that the lagest content box is at the top when it exported to pdf????
    Regards

    Have patience!
    Have you tried putting that largest box on it's own layer at the top?  I don't know much about buttons etc though, if you wait someone will come on here that does.  A lot of contributors are in different time zones though.....

  • InDesign CS5 Packaging Problems

    Hi all,
    Ok, after a scan of the forum, I saw a few topics that were close to the same problems I am having. Hopefully one of the Adobe techs can shed some light on this for me.
    I am running InDesign CS5 7.0.3 on a Mac Pro running 10.5.8, 3ghz Quad Core Intel with 4gb of ram.
    My situation:
    I go to package a file with no errors in the pre-flight panel. It gets all the way through the fonts section, it gets all the way through the images section and then hangs at the very end of the package process. The progress bar goes no further than this and the only way out is to force-quit InDesign.
    NOW, when I re-start InDesign, the recovery takes place and it has opened the file it just packaged (not the one I was originally packaging) and all links and fonts load properly. The file needs to be saved, so I overwrite the file and all seems fine. EXCEPT, when I go to re-open the file (which is now in its packaged folder on my desktop) - it won't open and InDesign hangs.
    Fair enough. I move the file (only) outside of the folder on to my desktop - and get THIS! It opens PERFECTLY.
    So to recap, it won't open from the folder but it will open from the desktop.
    I thought it might be a permissions thing, but I tried giving all users read & write permissions and it still wont open from inside the folder.
    The craziest part of all this is that it is only happening to a select few files, while others package without a hitch.
    AND these are all files we have packaged before (granted, that was before we upgraded to CS5) but now even the older versions of these files won't package from within CS5.
    My temporary work around is to export an IDML file, open that in CS4 and then package from there - which works perfectly.
    Did Adobe completely change the packaging process in CS5? I've heard rumors CS5 was re-written from the ground up, so I am assuming something has changed causing problems with some files.
    I consider myself a pretty advanced user of Adobe products and I can usually figure out major problems on my own, but this one is really throwing me for a loop.
    Any insight and/or help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!!
    - Joe C.

    Dear Adobe,
    We are using Adobe InDesign CS5: Version: 7.0.4, running on an Intel Apple Macintosh that is using OS X, Version: 10.6.7. This problem has also been exhibited on other Apple Macintoshes here.
    We have read all the post and tried changing all the fonts, still resulting most of the time with the same problem.
    1. When Packaging the process locks up with the message: Saving the Document… Open Document “Section 04.indd”. InDesign is now non responsive and hung up.
    2. InDesign needs to be terminated with “Force Quit”.
    3. When InDesign is restarted it is in the recovery mode and (2) windows open of the same file with an asterisk in front of the name, indicating that they need to be saved.
    4. Once saved, restarting InDesign either results in a locked (hung-up) state or it will start up OK only to hang-up when packaging again.
    Note: I have screen shots of these windows and original files if needed.
    This is what I have found out…
    1. If I uncheck the box “Copy Fonts (Except CJK)” in the window “Create Package Folder” I have no problems, except I now do not have the collected fonts.
    2. If I change all the fonts to a known good font it might fix the problem sometimes.
    3. Looking at the embedded fonts in the Illustrations, if I find a missing font and then replace it in Illustrator with a known good font and then save this illustration out as a new file and then re-link to this file the problem will go away.
    The problem seems to be sporadic.
    I think what is happening is during the packaging process; the fonts that are either collected, or embedded in the illustrations become corrupted by InDesign.
    I have lost DAYS! With this problem and am trying to make a living using InDesign. I do not have the time to do all this troubleshooting on an Adobe product.
    I find it curious that this is happening on both the Mac and PC platforms and find it even more curious that it seems not to be happening using CS4 InDesign like it is with InDesign CS5 as stated in the other post.

  • InDesign CS5.5 - Problem beim Öffnen von Dokumenten

    Hallo,
    ich bekomme ein Problem in InDesign CS5.5 nicht gebacken.
    Erstmal ein paar Infos:
    MacPro (2010/2011)
    Mac OS X 10.6.7 und 10.6.8
    Creative Suite CS5.5 (aktuelle Updates)
    - SING-Plug-In gelöscht
    - CS5.5 neu installiert
    - Dem Benutzer Administrator-Rechte gegeben
    Hier mal ein Crash.log: http://pastebin.com/8rED3fXS
    Hat jemand noch einen Lösungsvorschlag?
    Vielen Dank und viele Grüße
    Dominic Schuller

  • InDesign CS5 causing problems with InCopy assignment file but not content files

    I'm having a strange InDesign/InCopy CS5 issue (Mac OSX 10.6.6; all system & Adobe updates are current).  In my InDesign doc I have one assignment file containing two content files. All of the InCopy pieces work fine in InDesign (i.e., I can check out/in, edit, etc.).  When I go to open the assignment file in InCopy, InCopy starts to open  it but then crashes. If I try to open each content file directly in  InCopy, no problem. I've tried deleting and recreating new assignments  in InDesign, but they all have the same result in InCopy.
    I think this actually is a problem with the InDesign file because if I export the InDesign file to IDML, then try to open the IDML file, InDesign crashes! I've trashed my InDesign preferences, made sure all cross-references are up to date, etc. Anybody have any ideas what else to look for in my InDesign file that might cause this problem?
    Thanks!
    Andrea

    Thanks John!
    1) Here are the first 10-ish lines from the crash report that is generated when I try to open the IDML file:

    Thanks again for your help!

    Recently my hd of my macbook pro crashed. So I installed a new hd and installed CS5.1 again on my mac.
    I can start illustrator and dreamweaver, but when i start photoshop i get these messages:

    Could not initialize Photoshop because the file is locked or you do not have the necessary access privileges. Use the ‘Get Info’ command in the Finder to unlock the file or change permissions on the file or enclosing folders.
    and when I start Indesign it crashes.
    What can be the problem?

    Did you do a proper install or did you try to salvage parts of the OS, Libraries, … from some back-up/s?

  • Can you help with InDesign CS5 index problem?

       This is my first attept at creating an Index. I've pretty much tried everything I can think of to get this index to work properly. I think I might have made some fundamental errors in creating this document. I created a document and not a book. I placed 5 text files without linking them. I thought I could simply use the index panel and enter my words from the toc and front matter and InDesign would find all the occurences in the document. But when I ran the index I got the toc pg numbers and the index pg numbers only, i.e., Illumination vi-225 (p225 being the index pg). So far I have:
    reentered all the index entries to using the "whole document" because I had originally chose "This page" for each entry - that didn't work
    then I threaded the 5 text files thinking that might work - nope!
    then I saved the file as a book and tried using that - that didn't work.
       And yes, I have searched the Adobe CS5 help books, videos, online sites, etc. I'm hoping it's something simple! I would truly appreciate any help with this. Thank you!
       Sue

    You don't have any Shape layers, so you won't have any fill or stroke options.  If you had a rectangle and line layer, you have either deleted them, or caused them to be rasterized.  That would also remove any Fill and Stroke options from the Options bar.
    The 'little camera' at the bottom of the Tool bar, is the Quick mask icon.  Clicking on it toggles between standard and Quick mask modes, like you said.  Clicking on it is exactly the same as hitting the q key.  It has absolutely nothing to do with Shape layers.
    What you need to do now, is regroup.  What exactly are you trying to achieve, and what do you expect to see in your Workspace?  You will have noticed that your workspace is context sensitive.  It automatically changes according to what tools are selected, or what function you are using at any particular time.

  • InDesign CS5.5 Problem - Crash during PDF export (Runtime Error)

    Hello,
    I'm working with Adobe CS5.5 and have a problem with the PDF-export of some of my projects.
    The problematic projects are rather big (44-124 pages) with lots of pictures.
    The error I get during export is:
    [Headline:] Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library
    Runtime Error!
    Program: C:\...
    This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way.
    Please contact the application's support team for more information
    The program is not specified in the error.
    Export works fine for these files on my collegues computer with the same settings (hardware and software are almost a match).
    Microsoft Runtime Library was completely reinstalled without solving the problem.
    Any suggestions how to solve this problem?
    Thank you very much

  • Indesign CS5.5 Problem layer with video with ipad and share video in a swf file on web

    Hi Everyone,
    I have two problems:
    I'm just working on my portfolio
    - I've a page with 3 layers (Cover, Video, base) I'd like that the "cover" layer hide part of the video when it's playing. With a preview as SWF file it's working fine but when i try the preview for ipad or upload on a device when the video start it stay on the top.
    So doesn't "respect" the layer order. Why? how is that possible?
    - I created and exported my portfolio as .SWF with also html file. In this portfolio there are 2 Video File (.mov .m4v) when i try the preview in local they work fine, but when i upload the portfolio with the resourse files and all other file created, i share it and all the aniamtion works fine exept the video. They doesn't show up. Why?
    I mean all the folder ar shared, i don't want everytime download the folder in my desktop to watch also that video.
    How can i do that?
    I just want to share a portfolio with inside video.

    That might or might not work. Let's try closing ID again, log in withthe old user, then delet the files, if they exist, inthe list you'll find at Adobe Forums: InDesign crashes at startup
    Your user library is hidden in 10.8, so if yo don't kow how to show those files, see Access hidden user library files | Mac OS 10.7 Lion
    Now restart ID using the Keyboard shortcut to remove the prefs (hold down Cmd + Control + Shift + Opt keys as soon as you launch ID and choose Yes when asked if you want to replace the prefs. If you don't see the confirmation message, you weren't fast enough, so you need to try again).

  • Cross reference or hyperlinking not working for InDesign CS5 Book to ePub

    I cannot get hyperlinks or cross reference links to work when generating an ePub from InDesign CS5. (7.0.0.355, Mac OS 10.6.2)
    Here's how to recreate a simple test demonstrating the issue.
    1. Create a new InDesign Book (File -> New -> Book)
    2. Create document one (File -> New -> Document)
    3. Create a text box and type "Table of Contents"
    4. Create document two (File -> New -> Document)
    5. Create a text box in it and type "Story One"
    6. Create a new paragraph style and assign it to the Story One text
    7. Save document 2. I just kept the name Untitled-2.xhtml
    8. Back in document 1, add a cross-reference and select document 2, the style you created, and then "Story One". "Story One" should now appear under the previously typed Table of Contents text, and when highlighed, should show it is an active cross reference in the Hyperlinks panel.
    9. Save document 1. I just kept the name Untitled-1.xhtml
    10. Add both documents to the Book and save the book.
    11. From the Book panel, select Export Book to EPUB...
    12. Save the epub file and open it in Adobe Digital Editions.
    Note that the text "Story One" appears as a hyperlink but when clicked does not switch to the document 2. It does nothing apparent when clicked.
    Looking at the XHTML source for the first document, it is immediately evident why. The filename for document 2.thml is missing.  It looks like this: <a href="#anchor-anchor">
    When it should be : <a href="Untitled-2.xhtml#anchor-anchor">
    The same thing works if you create a hyperlink instead of a cross reference.
    I note then when I use the option to go to the destinate reference in the Cross Link (hyperlink) panel, it does switch to the second InDesign docuemtn. So the cross reference is functioning (in InDesign). But the link is broken in the ePub for the above mentioned reason.
    Bug? Something I'm overlooking?
    Entire source of Untitled-1.xhtml:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
    <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.1//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml11/DTD/xhtml11.dtd">
    <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">
    <head>
    <title>Untitled-1.xhtml</title>
    <link href="template.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" />
    </head>
    <body>
    <div id="untitled-1">
    <div class="generated-style">
    <p class="basic-paragraph" xml:lang='en-us'><span class="no-style-override">Table of Contents</span></p>
    <p class="basic-paragraph" xml:lang='en-us'><span class="no-style-override"><a href="#anchor-anchor">“story one”</a></span></p>
    </div>
    </div>
    </body>
    </html>

    As far as I can tell, it has NOT yet been fixed in CS5.5.  I'm having the same problem.  I have about 90 hyperlinks to fix.
    And the explanation that Teus Dejong gives indicates it's not going to be that helpful:  "we have found that only the links in documents split by the CS5 exporter will be fixed. For books the script does only work for references to earlier documents in the book, not for forward references. This means in practice that for most books the script will not repair the links and should be seen as a means to add the year only. At the moment I see no way to repair this, because the book epub output of InDesign does not contain sufficient information to repair links referencing forward to others documents in a book."
    It's pretty discouraging.

  • AFP networking with indesign cs5 jumpy folders

    I have a snow leopard server with afp filesharing and 10.6 clients connecting to it. Ever since we upgraded to adobe cs5 we have problems that folder-name toggles(jumps) between upper and lower case. This makes it almost impossible to for example mount an image in an indesign document. The jumps can be seen in both finder and open file in indesign.
    The problem persists until i quit the for example the indesign cs5 and reconnect the network share. If i den start indesign cs5 the problems comes back. This problems only happends when using afp-fileshares, if we copy the exact same folder-structure to a local disc it works fine. We have no special characters in the filepath.

    Indesign creates a temoraryfile with / (slash) in, this is generally a very bad idea to have exactly as danegeld states.
    Hopes either apple or adobe solves this quick, i just got off the phone with the adobe support here i sweden and they say that there is no support on the cs5 products if we have the files on a network share.
    who doesnt work in a networked enviroment. to have a workflow then you have to copy every file you use for a indesign document to the local disc first and then upload the result to a fileshare when you done editing, not very efficent.

  • Problem creating a 'used sources' list based on EXIF data in InDesign CS5

    Hello everyone,
    I recently started to use InDesign CS5 to work on school projects. These projects regularly require us to have a list of sources, not only for citations and referenced work, but also for images. As I sometimes make quite long documents, keeping track of what image is where, and where I got it from, gets tedious.
    I had the idea of generating a caption based on EXIF data, which I'd move to the pasteboard, and group it with the image. The text in the caption has a seperate, numbered paragraph style. On one of the last pages, I generate a table of contents, which the numbered paragraph style selected. I chose to display it using another paragraph style, without page numbers.
    What I want to have as the end result is:
    Table of contents
    1. <Title>. <Author> (<Creation Date>). Retrieved <Date Placed> through <Description>
    The captions display correctly, as shown above in the body of the table of contents. The table of contents itself however, shows only the numbering in front of it, and not the variables.
    I already tried converting the live captions to static captions, but that doesn't work. Does anyone have an idea how to solve this?

  • Indesign CS5 crash during startup - problem with Graphics.rpln

    I work in an architectural company and already several of our computers have experienced this very rare and unusual behaviour. During start up of Indesign (not clicking on any file but just launching Indesign) it crashes with the following error:
    "Adobe Indesign CS5 has stopped working"
    We use Windows 7 64bit, so the first step I did - I went into Application Log which says, so appears to be a problem with Graphics.rpln.

    I have tried everything I could think of - removed and reinstalled Adobe CS5, manually removed Adobe folders under %Appdata%\Local and %Appdata%\Remote folders (why can't Adobe delete those things during uninstallation is always a total mystery), changed video adapter drivers, cleaned Temp folders, everything I knew...
    None of the other apps like Photoshop or Illustrator CS5 malfunction - only Indesign. What is going on?
    Can it conflict with other software we use? We have Bentley Microstation, 3D Max, Office 2010, Kaspersky Antivirus and LOGMEIN installed on this computer...Any clues, guys?

    Looks to me like you've never installed any of the patches. Last patch for CS5 was 7.0.4, so I'd start with that and see if ti helps.
