Generate image assets from within Smart Object

Hi,
When designing for phones I create a large canvas with all screens spread out accross it. Every screen is a Smart Object. To me this has many advantages.
When editing a screen I open the Smart Object. Now I turn on Generate Image Assets. I notice that no resource folder is created.
Seems like Generating Image Assets from within a smart object is not possible.
Is that correct? If so, why isn't the menu option greyed out?
UPDATE: I found that you can use Generate Image Assets from within a Smart Object. But NOT if the Smart Object is part of a PSD. In other words, only if the Smart Object (psb) is a seperate file.
I wonder why.

Old thread, but I had the exact same problem. It turns out (on Windows at least), that you can find the generated assets folder for a smart object, but you have to know where to look.
With the smart object "opened" in Photoshop, click "Save as". This shows the location of the current smart object being edited. For me, it was: C:\Users\Jeff\AppData\Local\Temp\Layer112112121.psb
And lo and behold, right next to the layer temp file was the image asset output folder with my generated assets in it:
C:\Users\Jeff\AppData\Local\Temp\Layer112112121 - assets
You can right-click and "Open in a new window" to get a file explorer window in that folder (see image below).
(Possibly important note: Close or cancel the Save As dialog, we don't actually want to save the layer to a different location.)
This location makes sense, but it does seem to be a poor user experience design. Presumably temp files should output their asset folders to the desktop, just like unsaved PSD files.

Adding a margin feature would be awesome.
eg: logo.jpg+10px
The end result would be the image with 10px of extra white-space on each side.
More awesome would be "logo.jpg+10px5px10px5px"
So you could define the extra space for each side following the css standard, top right bottom left.
This could come in handy if you want to generate buttons for let's say an iOS app. Imagine you have a tiny help button that is 20x20px, if you import this the standard hit state will be small (the 20x20), but if you add an extra whitespace margin the hitstate will be much bigger than the icon itself, making it more user friendly to tap on the button.
Please consider this feature. Thanks!

Generate Image Assets crashes Photoshop when making half-size pngs from groups

I've been getting Photoshop CC to crash consistantly when I try to generate scaled-down pngs from a layer group. If I have generate image assets on and change a group name to "50% name.png", Photoshop instantly crashes. If generate assets is off and I change a group name to "50% name.png" Photoshop does not crash until I try turning on generate assets, and then it crashes instantly. Trying "50% name.png, name_full.png" also fails. This has occured in different files. It does not happen in every file or every time, but it happens very often.
I'm using Windows 8 and Photoshop CC 14.1.1 x64.

I’ve installed the latest photoshop update (14.2.1 x64). Unfortunately the new update makes me now impossible to use the generator routine. My project needs “decades” longer to realise that I’ve activated the generator in the File menu. I click on Generate->Image Assets and nothing happens… first. After half a minute or so the checkbox eppear finally. You must know: I have more than 100 Layers to be generated to single images. A lot of them are smart objects or groups.
When I finally save my file to start the generate routine, I needs a lot ( ! ) longer to generate the images than before.
Additionally my main problem is stil lthere: Impossible to rename any layer or activate the blending menue, while the generator runs.
So with this update I’ve to wait much much longer to activate or deactivate the generate routine. Deactivating needs a long time too… What have you done there Adobe? (Sorry for this words.)
@Adobe support: Please contact me personally via mail if possible and I will send you the project file where this problem appear. I can’t publish the file for everybody, sorry guys.
Do someone knows how to go back to the prevoius installation? Really sad about the generator. A must buy argument and actually a real time saver.

Exporting / Copying settings from ACR Smart Object

How do I export the RAW processing settings from an ACR Smart Object in Photoshop?
If I use Save Settings it only allows exporting a subset of the settings (no spot removal and local adjustments).
If I use Export Settings to XMP it doesn't seem to do anything.
The only way I've found to do it is to Save Image (from the Smart Object in ACR), save as a DNG, then use ExifTool to extract the XMP. Surely there must be an easier way?

I ABSOLUTELY agree...... That's exactly, I believe, how it's SUPPOSED to work.
Except that mine didn't.
I opened a 12.2 MP RAW file.
And made absolutely no changes to the workflow uptions at the time of opening.
But instead of "Image Sizing" saying "Default 12.2 MP", it said "3.6MP"
Resize was turned OFF
Width was 2321 px and height was 1824 px, BOTH GRAYED OUT.
Upon leaving ACR, I had a 2321x1824 file.
Eventually, after wasting another hour screwing around with it, I finally blew away all of Bridge AND the preferences and all that,
and rebooted since the %$#)(*& Adobe CC thing wouldn't figure out there was no more Bridge, and resintalled...........
Now, when I open a file in there, at LEAST it knows it's 12.2MP.
It STILL wants to change the Space to sRGB, which I NEVER use from here, and the Depth to 8-bit, which again, I never use in ACR,
but I can set those back to what they should be...
So, in this case, by using a large enough bludgeon, I appear to have gotten around the problem. Now I'm just waiting to see how soon it screws up again.

Photoshop 2014 - File Generator Image Assets not working

Win7 Pro 64bit
Photoshop 2014.2.1
Draw three layers with the brush and add extension .PNG to each layer name
Edit > Preferences > Plug-Ins : Enable Generator is checked
File > Generate > Image Assets : no check mark ever appears by "Image Assets" and no files are created
What am I doing wrong? Any help will be greatly appreciated!

I actually reported my results from my mid 2009 Macbook, so now from Windows 7 x64/Dell CC 2014.
Create new file
Check Image assets, no checkmark.
Convert background into floating layer, rename it 1.png, swipe a brushstroke.
Now I'm able to checkmark and extract 1.png.

Create fixed assets from within the transaction for creating the purchase order

I know there is a feature whereby you assign asset classes per material group and then you create assets from within the PO. I never used it though
Let me tell you one thing or rather ask you. Will you as a finance consultant be willing to let a MM guy create the assets??
Or will a MM guy be willing to create it?? If you allow them, you should be ready for surprises.
Honestly, this is a feature not worth exploring unless a FI guy is willing to create the PO. I would suggest the creation of asset masters should be with FI only

Photoshop Generate image assets

When I try to generate an asset from a Ps layer in a subfolder like in the example [subfolder]/Ellipse_4.jpg , it generate an error txt message:
So why doesn't Ps accept the "/" character ? Thanks for any help.

Because it's an illegal character in file names.
Stick to numbers, the letters of the English alphabet, hyphens and underscores.

Our current support in Extract for Smart Objects includes showing them in the file, and using them on the backend when you request your layer(s) to be scaled while exporting (i.e., when scaling up, the highest quality image is used). We also display the colors, fonts and gradients from the included Smart Objects in the Extract Styles panel.
We have considered providing a way to open Smart Objects from within Extract, and could use some feedback from you on how this user experience would work best for you. Would you prefer option a) or b) below, and why?
a) When opening a Smart Object, it opens in the current browser window, replacing your current view of the PSD.
b) When opening a Smart Object, it opens in a new browser window, which receives focus (is the frontmost browser tab/window).
Also, if you tried to open a Linked Smart Object when the linked file is not available, what would you expect to happen?
Would you describe in more detail what you mean by: "Could a smart object or linked layer be expanded on upload?" and how you'd use this feature?

Generate Image Assets + Scaling = Poor Quality

Hello
I am attempting to use the generate assets feature to create 2x retina images. The images I need to export are photos with a text overlay. The photos are all high resolution converted to smart objects. When I export the images, however, the quality of the photo is not good, like it was resized up without being a smart object.
my group of objects being exported is named:
200% bath_designsR.png, bath_designs.png
Is what I am attempting possible?

Smart Object Irregularity

Lightroom Unable to Import HDR Image File Opened as Smart Object

I just started using Nik HDR Efex Pro and created an image file in PS CS4 Extended which was opened as a smart object and saved to play around with later. The image shows up in Photoshop as "[image number]_hdr.tif" and both PS CS4 Extended and CS5 have no problem opening it. But I cannot import it into LR3. LR3 gives me a dialogue box which says in effect that the image file cannot be imported because it is corrupt or unsupported. I am guessing the latter because (perhaps) as a smart object the image file is 32bit(?) In any event, has anyone tried and had luck importing to LR3 in this circumstance? Is it "operator error" or just something LR cannot handle? Also, if you have encountered this problem, do you have a workaround? Thanks in advance.

The backend for middleware should be same as what it was in MI.
the erro comes when the corrosponding structure in a bapi doesnot exists in current backend.
Please check if the structure ZEFLMI_DOC_HDR_T51 exists in backend.

How to generate an alert from within a workflow?

Hi Experts,
Let me describe my scenario. Presently I am working in CRM 5.0. There is a need to generate an alert from my workflow . This alert should be generated in the Web Client in a particular tab only.
Now I have identified a function module called 'SALRT_CREATE_API' which can be used to generate alerts. But in that function module one of the import parameters is 'IP_Category' which accepts the category of the alert . Now the alerts in the WebClient do not have any such thing as 'Alert Category' . They only possess 'Alert Id' and 'Alert Class'. (spro => SAP Reference Img => Customer Relationship Management => Interaction Center Webclient =>Basic functions => Define Alert and Alert Profiles ).
So please suggest me some solution.

Which mentions that you will have to maintain the Alert Category. You can use transaction SALRTCATDEF to define your alert. You will have to maintain the Business Object from where you are triggering the alert.

File Generate Image Assets: no checkmark

When selecting the Image Assets as taught in the video http://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/using/generate-assets-layers.html I do not get a checkmark andtherefore this feature is not working. I am using Photoshop CC version 14.1.1 in a Windows 7 environment. Any suggestions?

Yes, I have Enable Generator checked. And yes, I have a PS document with layers open.
As I'm a developer I do have a very custom set-up on my machine.
By this I mean I have edited my PATH in command line and have a lot of things installed such as ruby, nodejs, git, etc.
Not sure if this would affect PS.

the parent object.Since you are using ambiguous terminology, it would be much better if you provided a small sample of your code to avoid confusion. I am guessing that you are actually talking about an inner class when you say child class.
If that is correct, then you can do something like this:
class Parent {
void foo() {}
void bar() {}
class Child {
    void foo() {}
    void test() {
      bar(); // No conflicts, just call the Parent method
      Parent.this.foo(); // Use explicit qualification to avoid conflicts.

Image editing from within DWCS3

Greetings~
For some reason I can not edit images from within DWCS3. Any time I try to launch the "inhouse" editing tools from the "Properties" pannel I get an error that reads:
"Unable to launch C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS3\Photoshop.exe. Please be sure that this application exsists and that there is enough memory to run it."
The strangest part about it is I have removed Photo Shop from my list of Editors through the Preferences. The only editor that I have in the "Editors" list is Fireworks which is set to Primary).
Any ideas? Thanks guys/gals!

Which operating system are you on?
Can you launch Fireworks the conventional way, via a shortcut?

Photoshop CS5- How to paste image as pixel or smart object

It happened before but now I can't get it to happen.
Just a few days ago when I could paste (cmd V) an item in Photoshop CS5, I would get a pop up -- Paste as pixel, smart object etc.
Now I don't get the option. How do I make it appear? I need to get that option window to popup after pasting.

Try resetting your Preferences:
Windows - Hold down CTRL-SHIFT-ALT then double-click the PS icon.
Macintosh - Hold down CMD-SHIFT-OPTION then double-click the PS icon.
Click "Yes" when asked to delete the settings file.
