Generating Thumbnails...

Each time I apply an adjustment, Aperture 3 starts processing and there is a fairly significant lag until I am able to apply the next adjustment (sometimes up to a minute). If I open the activity window, it says "Generating Thumbnails... 2." It gradually finishes one and then the other, and once they are both processed I can continue with the next adjustment. I did not have to deal with this lag in Aperture 2, so I'm wondering if this is a problem on my system or a new "feature" in Aperture 3? Are others having the same problem with processing after every adjustment?
As background, I am using 18MP Canon 7D RAW files with Aperture 3.0.1 in a brand new library which only contains the 9 test files I imported for testing. I also had the same problems with 3.0 and even tried making adjustments to much smaller with JPG master images as well, but that did not change anything.

Thanks for the suggestions. I have de-selected "Enable faces" and the "New projects automatically generate previews" check boxes in Preferences. The "Processing..." lag still occurs, however now it only shows 1 thumbnail being generated between each adjustment being applied instead of 2. Am I missing something else in order to stop the thumbnails from being re-generated each time?
I have the same issue, though it doesn't put AP3 on its knees.
It has nothing to do with previews (as they are generated when importing images), only with thumbnails generation. As far as I can see, there is no option regarding to the generation of thumbnails. I, for one, would appreciate an option like "generate updated thumbnails when quitting Aperture" or something. Did a report to Apple.

  • Imovie 9.09 unable to generate thumbnails on my iMac running 10.6.8

I'm trying to digitise camcorder footage currently saved on vhs tape.  Although I'm now using a 27"iMac running Yosemite, I don't have the usb lead with the std usb connector on the computer end to connect the digitiser to it, so I'm using my old iMac running 10.6.8 and iMovie 9 as I have the correct lead for that iMac.
I did a test one minute file transfer and this digitised, opening it in iMovie 10, ok so I saved it onto a USB stick and transferred it to the 27" iMac though without any content displayed in the clip. Even so, it plays ok so I'd be content if the remaining tapes got digitised with this problem.  But.....
When I tried to import 2 hours as one file the conversion appeared to be going ok until I stopped it.  I then got a message saying that it was generating thumbnails and would take a minute.  this changed to 2, then 9, then 2 hours, then 4 hours.  After it had been running for  12 hours with no change in the 4 hours estimated for generating the thumbnails i did a force quite, then tried to get back into iMovie.
When it opened, it went straight into generating thumbnails, estimating the time needed as 9 minutes.  It's now been stuck on "less than a minute" for about 30 mins so I'm about to do another force quit.
All suggestions welcomed, ideally to generate thumbails in the shortest time possible - though I'd be content just to get the file transferred with no thumbnails.
    Advice please.

Save the photos to the camera roll on the iPad, then connect it to your computer with a USB cable. You can import the photos using iPhoto if you have it or image capture if you don't.

iMovie 11 is not working. I try to open it and it says it is generating thumbnails for one of my previous projects. All the commands are gray. I have to force it to quit. I just want to capture clips to start a new project. I googled the problem and there were discussions about deleting files in various folders and renaming clip extensions. I don't like the solutions I saw there and I am not sure they will work.

Nobody replied so I called Apple. They seemed to think they could fix the problem but I had to agree to pay about $20 first. I told them to put it down as a complaint. I only want to use the software I bought. I can't see that it is my fault it is malfunctioning. I guess I will have to pay. It doesn't seem right.

  • PSE 6 generating thumbnails on 128 pics for 2 days

I'm running Win 7 and PSE 6 and have 37,000+ pics and videos in my catalog...been using PSE since v2.
I came home from vacation the other day, imported 128 pics from an SD card, and PSE 6 has been generating thumbnails for those pics for almost 2 days...the pics themselves are there as I can see them fine if I double-click on them.  I was able to attach a tag to the new pics.
The thumbnails from my other 37,000 photos are still there/visible.
    Any ideas?

  • Automatic Import and "Generating Thumbnails"

    I just installed imovie 08, and I have a couple of problems/questions.
    1) When I start the Import Process, the Toggle that selects for Automatic or Manual import, goes to Manual and I can't change it..???
    2) After some video is imported the computer takes a long time "generating Thumbnails". This never happened with iMovie HD.
    Any comments, advice?
    Thanks.. Gil

    2) After some video is imported the computer takes a long time "generating Thumbnails". This never happened with iMovie HD.
After importing the video, iMovie '08 creates a tiny movie showing the same frames as the imported video, but in a much smaller frame. Those are the "thumbnails". This movie is used for skimming.
iMovie HD didn't offer the skimming feature so it didn't need to build these thumbnails.

  • FDK: Generating Thumbnails of FrameMaker File pages

    Hi There
I'm wondering is it possible to generate thumbnails of individual pages of a FrameMaker document programmatically, using the FDK?
I've had a look through the FDK reference document but couldn't find anything relevant.
    Thanks
    Eric

FM doesn't have any thumbnails created or stored internally, so you would have to create a plug-in that rasterizes the page and stores it in a FrameImage format in an allowable container.
For what purpose and how would you view these thumbnails?

  • Premiere Pro 5.5.2 crashes when generating thumbnails; faults ImageRenderer.dll

Hello all!  I'm a new Premiere user.  I've been working on a review show, and it's been going great for the last month.  A few days ago, however, Premiere Pro started acting wonky.  Part of my show involves putting in small clips from other sources, typically 3-4 seconds.  With this most recent show, Premiere Pro started crashing left and right without warning.  It took me a few days to narrow down the source.
ImageRenderer.dll seems to be crashing when attempting to generate thumbnail images of the sourced clips.  Everything else seems to work fine.  It seemed to start when I used the Clip Speed / Duration function to slow down a 30fps clip to about 25% speed.  I realized later that the clips were at 30fps in a 24fps timeline (the rest of my material is 24fps).  Once I changed the clip's speed, Premiere started crashing, perhaps due to how the clip interacted with the timeline.  I removed the offending clip, but it seemed that the damage was done.  I discovered that if I deleted the source file from the project inventory pane Premiere wouldn't crash.
I just recently discovered that if I collapse the video track of the source clip, Premiere won't generate thumbnails for those clips and thus remains stable.  I stress-tested my rig all day yesterday using MemTest86 and Prime95, with no errors.  I also uninstalled Premiere Pro, rebooted, and reinstalled from scratch.  I still get the ImageRenderer.dll crash when Premiere attempts to generate thumbnails for the clips.  So far I do have a workaround (collapse the video track) but I would like to figure out a better solution for it.  I even created a new project and re-sourced the clips into a different frame rate.
    Any help would be appreciated!

  • Adobe Reader XI (11.0.08) doesn't create thumbnail (bitmap) using Microsoft Interface IExtractImage -- Extract on Windows Server 2008 R2, when exe to generate thumbnail is launched from Windows service.

Adobe Reader XI (11.0.08) doesn't create thumbnail (bitmap) using Microsoft Interface IExtractImage --> Extract on Windows Server 2008 R2, when exe to generate thumbnail is launched from Windows service.
But if exe is launched as standalone, then interface IExtractImage --> Extract, gives Bitmap to generate thumbnail of PDF document.
Above problem occurs only for PDF documents, if we tried same with other software like CAD -CATIA it works without any problem.
Is there any security concerns form PDF side, which doesn't allow to generate Bitmaps, if exe to generate it is launched form Windows service.

It might be deliberate, Acrobat and Reader software is not intended to run in a service environment.

  • Problems in generating thumbnails in iMovie08

I just downloaded 6GB worth of video from my Sanyo XactiHD camera into my iPhoto. When i launch my iMovie08, it asks for permissions for generating thumbnails and then it closes down. It has imported stills and video into iPhoto perfectly, but fails to generate thumbnails in iMovie (other projects open fine, if i skip the thumbnail generation and postpone importing the new video). I have tried three or four times and it still crashes. I tried importing directly into iMovie and it still crashes with a message "iMovie application quit unexpectedly". Any suggestions on how to deal with it?
    Regards
    Sanjeev

If you have corrupted thumbnails you can try the suggestion to delete either the whole _iMovie Thumbnails_ folder or individual files in there. Then restart iMovie and let it regenerate the thumbnails.
If iMovie continually fails to generate thumbnails for some clips (as it seems to do for some clips imported from my Sony Cybershot) I figured *as a workaround* you can "manually" generate Thumbnails if you open the movie in Quicktime and can Export in Photo-JPEG at 120x90 resolution and drop the file into the iMovie Thumbnails folder for your event. Note that the movie you export has the same name as the source minus the .mov extension.

To do this for many clips this would be annoying I know, I'm thinking that you could create an Automator workflow to do this for all the files but I haven't done this yet. If I work on that I will post more info here.

  • Generating thumbnails when shuttling down timeline crashes FCP

Hi again! I'm having a multitude of problems (each in a different post for lack of confusion).
When I open a project in FCP, and try to move down the timeline with the sliderbar at the bottom, FCP crashes. It seems to be related to FCP not being able to generate thumbnails (little pictures on each clip in the timeline). If I move down the timeline very slowly and let FCP generate those pictures, it's okay. But I sit there for five minutes scrolling down through my 20 minute project.
Any ideas about a fix for this? Thank you so very much for your time and help,

  • Generating Thumbnails takes hours??

I'm importing 600MB MP4 320x240 files generated by Handbrake from local disk. It's taking about 3 hours for each one to go pass the Generating Thumbnails. Is this normal? Can't they make iMovie multithreaded somehow, so I can use it for other things while it's doing this?

I think thats normal, whenever I uploaded video into imovie it took at least a few hours to generate the thumbnails. don't quit imovie during the process though. I did that, and it ended up not rendering the thumbnails, and made imovie crash every few minutes when i was using.
If that does happen, just re-import the video, it worked for me.

  • IMovie update 7.1.2 crashes at start while generating thumbnails

Since I updated iMovie to v7.1.2 it crashes every time I open it. First shows a message saying that a camera has been detected (although there is no camera connected) Then it starts generating thumbnails and crashes.
    I re-installed version 7.1.1 and works wonderfully

After a very patient work I could make my iMovie work.
When the iMovie 7.1.4 update starts (7.1.2 had the same issue) it checks your HD (and all other storage devices you may have connected) for video files. This is different from version 7.1.1. If during the check, for any reason, cannot access a file, it crashes.
In my case I had to check permissions for every video file and/or folder containing them until I solved the problem. Fixing permissions with Disk Utility or changing permissions for a folder and all enclosed subfolders, it is not enough. You have to check each individual file. Not very difficult but time consuming.
Now iMovie is working fine. I really regret that Apple made a change in the two last updates without any warning. After all the turmoil provoked in this and in other related forums by desperate iMovie users experiencing this problem, they should have acknowledged the issue. By the way. it started last June. I would have expected that they publish some suggestions in their support website.
I spent almost 4 hours doing what finally was the answer to the problem. Not to mention the timeless trials I made during the last months.

  • Aperture 3: multiple export hangs while generating thumbnails?

Sigh. I was almost ready to write a blog post claiming that while AP3 has its share of bugs, it's not the unusable mess some have painted it to be. This morning I'm no so sure anymore. I think this is stellar update with tons of potential. When it works it screams on my machine and the new features are amazing. But guys, i need the basics to work.
Here's what I've just sent t via the feedback form:
I've been trying to export 29 pictures in web format for the past 40 minutes. I've had to force-quit AP three times and restart my machine twice. Aperture starts exporting at a normal pace but then completely hangs on a "generating thumbnails" process. At this point it becomes impossible to either cancel the task or quit Aperture normally. It also kicks my iMac's fan into overdrive - something that NEVER happens.
    This is not good.
    Other problems:
    - random crashes while using brushes.
    - second display doesn't follow "blank" command and keeps reverting to "alternate" even when the menu says Blank.
This is a great version of Aperture with a lot of potential. These bugs are killing me though.
I've just rebuilt the database. If it's still not working I'm going to remove plugins and see if it helps.
Anyone else having problems with this?

Absolutely has to be a bug. This isn't a setting or configuration problem. It might even be a Snow Leopard problem. I had the same problems with A2.1.4 on SL as I do with version A3.0.1. Export hangs seem to happen on images that came from my A2 library that was imported into A3 but originally adjusted in A2. These images were imported from scanned TIFF files. If the adjustment mechanism was flawed in prior Aperture versions then Apple needs to create and distribute a utility that converts these images into something that A3 can use.
I will have to revert to A2 running on Leopard until Apple can get this fixed. If I cannot export, there is no point in running the software. On this discussion thread, we are just trying to fly by flapping our arms.

  • IMovie11 hangs, freezes while generating thumbnails

Often after importing MiniDV tapes using iMovie11 the progress bar for generating thumbnails gets to a certain point and then stops. It will remain this way for over a day unless I Force Quit the application.
The event directory and thumbnail directory of the imported tape do not show any recently created files after a while.
A search on the internet revealed one workaround - delete any zero-byte DV files that iMovie creates and reload iMovie. This worked for a couple of tapes but now I am stuck while importing other tapes.
    I am not using Stabilization.
As of this writing, I may have narrowed the problem down to the number of DV files that iMovie creates. For some reason, with those other tapes, it creates almost 2000 such files for a simple 90-minute tape. When I delete over a 1000 of the smallest DV files iMovie will complete the generation of thumbnails.
I have not yet tested what happens if I delete over a 1000 of the largest DV files.
If I import the same tape twice, the two imports will produce a different number of DV files, the difference is in the hundreds but both data sets are still too large for iMovie11 to generate thumbnails from.
I have tried using two different camcorders for importing those other tapes without positive results.
I have a new low-end Mac Pro with the OS present as of Oct of last year (when I bought the computer), 8GB of RAM, 600MB of free disk space, and I use a Firewire adapter to convert the 400 mbps connection coming out of the camcorders to the 800 mbps connection integral to my Mac Pro.
I have tried powering down and back up to remove variables involving the OS and Firewire interface.
I have no other movie projects or events present in iMovie when I conduct my imports.
How do I get iMovie11 to stop hanging, freezing while it generates thumbnails?
    Thank you.
