Generation 2 iPad (Slowly Dying?)

I have a Generation 2 iPad and for the past few weeks it has been slowing down terribly, freezing up and now I am not able to open Safari. I do not have videos downloaded, nor do I have tons of pictures; I have very few games downloaded. Occasionally a message pops up saying "the storage is almost full", which I know is not true. I have deleted some of my Apps, hoping this would help resolve the storage issue, to no avail. What is going on? I do not want to have to purchase a new one. Please tell me what the problem could be. Thank you.

Could be the charger, cable or iPad. Plug the USB cable into your computer. It may say "Not Charging", however, it is charging slowly and will verify that the cable is good.
Try this first - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.)
The quickest way (and really the only way) to charge your iPad is with the included 10W or 12W (5W on Mini) USB Power Adapter. iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter (5W). When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (2.5W, most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge very slowly (but iPad indicates not charging). Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB. If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain.
Apple recommends that once a month you let the iPad fully discharge & then recharge to 100%.

It will charge to 100% in 4 hours 2 minutes. The new iPad has a larger capacity battery (42 watt-hours), so using the 10W charger will obviously take longer. If you are using your iPad while charging, it will take even longer. It's best to turn your new iPad OFF and charge over night. I have a generation 1 IPad, having trouble coming on after charge.

I have a generation 1 IPad, everytime the kids let it die I have trouble getting it to start back up. I charge it for hours and when I come back to it the low battery image comes up. If I unplug it the needs charged image comes up. This has been going on for the passed six to ten months. I have been able to keep trying both pluged in and unpluged to get it to come on. I try just the power button, both power and home for 30 sec. plug it in to the computer and do it. everytime I have been able to get it to come on. When it does come on it is fully charged. It runs great for a Gen 1 that is 3 years old. I tell the kids to make sure they are charging it and not lettting it die, but they are kids. So again today I have a die IPad and everything I try is not working. Any ideas on how I can get this thing to work and maybe not have to go through this again.

HT201272 I had Pages and many documents associated with it on my generation 1 ipad. I just got an ipad Air. I downloaded Pages to my new ipad but all my documents are gone. How do I go about getting them back. My old ipad was backed up to my computer.

You will need to restore the backup - just downloading the app from the store won't give you its contents from a preivous device, you will need to restore the whole backup onto your new iPad (which will replace its current contents) to get the app's content.

An iPad 2 will do it...for awhile. Realize that it's seemingly on it's last legs as far as iOS updates go and performance will not be great enough for today's demanding games. Also realize that a big part of running apps smoothly is how much system RAM (the memory area that the apps actually run in) the device has. The iPad 2 has 512 MB which is adequate for most apps but not for some. The iPads above the iPad 2 all have 1 GB of system RAM and the iPad Air 2 has 2 GB.
The time will come when the iPad 2 can no longer be updated past a certain iOS version (as the iPad 1 is) so it will be more difficult to keep up with apps that you want to be using. This will eventually happen to ALL devices so you'll have to judge if you want to be at the tail-end of iOS updates or at least have a bigger buffer with a newer iPad.

Older generation of iPad and software

Do older generation iPads update to the latest operating systems and browsers availble? I can't find a list of iPad's and their most recent associated OS or browser versions which is what prompted me to ask. I am not a apple user normally so I have very limited knowledge on these products. I am trying to find supported software on each generation of iPad's and iPhones. For instance, some pc's are only able to run up to Windows XP SP3 and IE9 or later (just an example - dont rake me over the coals if this is not exactly true). Thanks in advance for helping me understand this while making some purchasing decisions.

No one is developing applications for iPad 1 devices that are stuck on IOS 5. A compatible IOS Apple iTunes App Store is no longer available. A synchronization via iTunes 12.0.1 to my iPad 1 basically refuses to load almost all applications because newer versions of these applications require IOS 7 and IOS 8 for installation.
Time to get a more recent iPad that can run IOS 8 (or later).
