Generation gap - firewire/USB

Ok, so I just got my 8gig Nano - Woohoo!
Also just found out that I can't sync it using my 3gen dock via Firewire - Boo!
Here're the questions:
The dock connectors on the new Nano & 3rd gen iPod are the same, correct?
Can I just swap the cables and plug my 3rd gen dock into USB?
The big question:
Can I sync (& charge) my 3rd gen iPod via USB?
It won't bother me much if I can't use the old dock anymore, but it will bother me if I have to have 2 cables (1 FW & 1 USB) hanging out of the back of my Mac to charge the 2 different generations.
Thanks in advance!
-Dennis

Thanks Niel,
How do I determine if I have USB 2.0?
It's not specified in the system profiler or the specs listed here:
http://support.apple.com/specs/powermac/PowerMac_G4_DigitalAudio.html
Do you know whether or not my 3rd gen dock is interchangeable between generations and FW/USB?

• External HDs: Firewire + USB

I'm the owner of a 1GHz eMac with only FW + USB1 ports and have successfully daisy-chained 2 FW drives to it, occupying only 1 FW port with decent transfer rates. Recently someone gave me a USB2 drive and I've noticed it is the slowest thing on earth, plugging into a USB1 port of course. But I've also noticed a USB2 port on the back of one of my FW drives. Could I chain the USB2 drive to my FW drive instead of the USB1 port on the eMac? Would I get better transfer rates this way?

moyboy,
Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Were you to attach the USB 2.0 drive to the Firewire/USB drive, the USB 2.0 drive will remain invisible to the computer. The USB port on the back of the external drive with both USB and Firewire is for connecting the drive to a USB port on a computer (not at the same time the drive is connected via Firewire!). The Firewire and USB ports don't communicate with each other. If you daisy-chained the USB drive to the external drive's USB port with the second drive being attached to the Mac via Firewire, there'd be no communication between the first drive and the computer.
If it were possible to daisy-chain a USB 2.0 device to the USB port on a multiple-interface external drive, every owner of a USB 1.1 Mac who wanted to be able to use a 5th Generation iPod or iPod Nano would be snapping up those external drives. Put it this way, if you can attach the USB 2.0 drive to the dual interface drive and actually have it work at USB 2.0 speeds, let me know what model drive you have and I'll rush out and grab one myself!
USB 2.0 nominally allows transfers up to 480 kbps while USB 1.1 is only rated at 12 kbps, which accounts for the abysamal performance hit. Firewire 400 is rated at 400 kbps but is in practice faster than USB 2.0 since USB transfers are done entirely under control of the computer's CPU while control of Firewire transfers is off-loaded onto Firewire hardware.

• Booting Windows on Intel Mac from an external Firewire/USB hard disk?

Is it possible to boot an Intel iMac from an external hard disk - in target disk mode etc., without having to install Boot Camp?
I have a spare drive with installed XP on it and I need to find out what is on the drive before re-formatting. However, I only have my mac in which to do so. The extra disk will be used in an external firewire/USB 2.0 caddy. I have researched some methods, but they are all very long winded and require a PC or the creation of a Windows partition on my start-up disk using Boot Camp.

"Is it possible to boot an Intel iMac from an external hard disk - in target disk mode etc., without having to install Boot Camp?"
No.

I am buying an audio interface with Firewire output, would I feed this into Firewire,USB or Thunderbolt for Garageband?

I don't have a H4 but do have a H2. Did you set the H4 as a audio interface, after you plug it in choose interface in the H4 screen?
Did you choose the H4 input channel in the track info?

• Startup problem with Adaptec FireWire/USB drive enclosure?

I recently acquired a Core Duo 1.66GHz mini. Soon after buying it I noticed that on startup, I get to the gray screen with Apple logo, and it freezes there for about 3-4 minutes before the spinning wheel appears briefly and then OS X starts normally.
I eventually figured out that it only does this when my Adaptec 3.5" FireWire/USB drive enclosure is connected via FireWire. If the drive is not connected the mini starts up lightning fast.
It seems to be an issue specific to the mini and this model of enclosure. I put another drive in the enclosure; same issue. I tried another enclosure I had; issue doesn't happen. I tried the Adaptec enclosure with a MacBook; issue doesn't happen. I exchanged the Adaptec enclosure for another of the same model; the issue still occurs. I even exchanged the mini for another; the issue still occurs.
Any ideas as to why this is happening and what I might do to fix it? I don't restart very often so this isn't too annoying, nonetheless I'd really love to fix it if I can.

Afraid it is all downhill from here: from what I have learnt, that drive uses a Prolific Revision A chipset. This means it cannot be used as the boot drive for your mac. http://www.ultraproducts.com/ seems to be the manufacturer and on their website forums about their enclosures detail similar issues and worse - write failures over firewire.
I cannot say much about the chipsets. Some folk swear by Oxford, which has to the best of my knowledge always supported Firewire startup. Personally, my ext hd is a Prolific Rev C and I have had no problems at all.
That all said and done, I trust that only the firewire connection is made and not the FW and USB? Also, if it is connected only via USB, are the mount problems experienced?
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

• Camera connexion - Firewire / USB

I have a Canon HV30 which has firewire out for getting stuff to a PC or Mac.
I need a new laptop, but it seems difficult to find one with Firewire, they all seem to be USB connected.
I can get a Firewire to USB converter easily, but will Premiere be able to download from the camera over this Firewire->USB connection? Or does it only look at a genuine Firewire input?
Additionally:
Is it really about time I junked my beloved HV30 and just got something tapeless instead to get around all these issues?
Black Magic to get HDMI into the PC and work that way?
Thanks inanticipation for any help I vcan get here.

You can try it, but I doubt it would work. Those 1394/USB bridges might work for hard drives (and probably not well, at that), but the AV/C protocol (that is, video control and capture over 1394) is a different animal. You'd probably have to get an ExpressCard adapter that provided 1394 ports--that's assuming the laptop has an ExpressCard slot.
Is it really about time I junked my beloved HV30 and just got something tapeless instead to get around all these issues?Black Magic to get HDMI into the PC and work that way?
Tapeless is the way going forward--no question. Lots of options based on budget, so that's probably the largest determining factor of what to get. There's no need for a BMD card with HDMI input, though--that would be only if you were going to be capturing live into the edit system. If you're recording to some form of solid-state media, like an SD card, it's just like copying photos from the SD card in your digital camera. You'd simply pop the card out of the cam and into the computer--or sometimes you can connect the camera via USB as if it were a card reader--and transfer the files to your hard drive for editing. Once the files have been created in camera, the damage has been done, so to speak. The HDMI input on a BMD is for taking a signal directly off the camera's imaging sensor and bypassing the internal compression, whatever flavor it may be. That's fine if you're using the camera in a studio setting, or if you have a really, really, really long cable (joking).
In short, with a tapeless camera, you'll be editing directly with the files created by the camera--it's just a file copying process to get them into your computer to edit.
Hope that helps.

• Poll: Firewire/USB bootability

I often start up my PowerMac G5 from a Firewire external hard drive into OS X Tiger. According to my understanding, ever since the first G4 Mac was introduced (in 1999?), Macs have been able to start up from FireWire external hard drives. I even read a post that a USB external device was able to boot a PowerBook G3 into OS 9 (www.macintouch.com/usbflash.html).
This feature of external bootability has been one of the advantages of Mac over Windows. PC's with Windows XP/Vista (as opposed to Intel-based Macs with Windows) have always been unable to start up from USB/Firewire external devices. When a Windows guru needs to start up his/her PC from a hard drive placed outside the PC, he/she has to open the PC and pull out the ribbon cable from the inside of the PC and stretch the ribbon cable to the hard drive outside the PC. Because bare ribbon cables are subject to environmental electromagnetic interference, the data transferred in such a configuration are not reliable. So, Mac people are lucky regarding the external bootability. (By the way, if a Windows guru gets tired of opening the PC every time he/she needs the ersatz "external" booting, then he/she would put a ribbon cable connector on the PCI slot door like www.startech.com/ststore/itemdetail.cfm?ProductID=SATAPLATE1)
However, Apple can drop old features from new products. I would like to know whether Intel-based Macs are still able to start up from external volumes.
Anyone who has ever tried to boot an Intel-based Mac from a Firewire/USB external device, please let me know whether it was successful.
I also would like to know whether anyone was successful in having a USB external hard drive boot a PowerMac G5 into OS X. My Maxtor OneTouch external hard drive has both a USB 2.0 port and Firewire ports. With USB connection, this Maxtor drive fails to boot my PowerMac G5. On the other hand, with Firewire connection, it is successful.
Furthermore, I would like to know whether anyone was successful in booting an Intel-based Mac into Windows XP/Vista on an external Firewire/USB hard drive with Boot Camp.
I also would like URL's of Apple's announcements that confirm or deny external bootabilities.
<edited by host. see new Terms of Use, section 2.4.>
If you are a novice user who are unsuccessful in Firewire/USB booting because you do not even know how to select the startup volume by the Startup system preference or by the Option Start, then refrain from participating in the poll although you are welcome to leave a message.
Thank you in advance.

My PowerBook G3 can boot off Firewire too. Mac bootability from an external drive goes back to the old external SCSI hard drives a couple decades ago, so my PowerBook 160 (circa 1992) can also do it. Learning that Windows can't boot from an external drive always gets an "You have got to be kidding me" reaction from Mac veterans.

• Can a raid be moved between protocols (eSata/Firewire/USB)?

If I get two multi-protocol drive enclosures (like the OWC Quad interface enclosures) and set them up as a RAID 0 under, say, eSata, does anyone know if I can move them to another computer, plug them in as, say, FireWire, and then continue to use the RAID?
This is mostly to assure myself that if my (contemplated) Mac Pro goes back for repairs for a week or two, I can continue to work on my Mac Mini.
TIA
Dual G5 + 15" MBP 2GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Yes. The type of connection is not relevant. You can move the enclosure connection to Firewire, USB, or SATA (if you have an external SATA port.)

• Need help on buying FIREWIRE/USB-compatible for Logic Pro 9.0.2 on my SL

Hi...Im in needs of help in my new OS Mac World.Had my Logic Pro 9(9.0.2) install in my Snow Leopard(10.6.3).Need help on buying FIREWIRE/USB-compatible for Logic Pro 9.0.2 on my Snow Leopard.Just a real basic audio interface that works with my Macbook pro Specification. You're help will be much more appreciated..
Best Regards:RatzyMazzy

In any case I would suggest to get an audio interface which is *Core Audio* compatible. This means that you just need to plug it in and it will work with OS X’s integrated driver. I once had an M-Audio interface which needed its own driver and it had latency problems because of them. I am currently using the EDIROL FA-66 with 10.6.3 on my MacBook Pro. It still works flawlessly and has worked without problems in the past with 10.4 and 10.5, too. Here is how it looks like: http://www.rolandus.com/products/productdetails.php?ProductId=731
I have also heard good things about the FireWire interfaces from Presonus, like the FireBox.

• FireWire, USB hub

I'm looking for some advice on a self-powered hub to connect an Epson Stylus Photo 2200 printer, an Epson 3200 photo scanner, a Nikon CoolScan IV film scanner, and a LaCie 120GB external drive. The Epson devices have both ports, while the Nikon and LaCie are Firewire only. USB connection is not critical, but it would be nice to have. The hub, of course, will be connected to the PowerBook.
I've searched this forum, but have not found any postings about a firewire or firewire/USB hub.

Braby -
My experience with hubs has been limited to ethernet and USB hubs. Most have their own power supply, but I once had a USB hub that didn't, and I found it limited what devices would work with it. Since I've never used a Firewire hub before, I did not know whether there were powered or un-powered varieties, so I was just playing it safe.
I've found a number of Firewire hubs through Google and I have checked Amazon.com. Both sources have provided some information, which have been helpful, but not definitive. I was hoping to find an Apple user or two who have tried doing what I am wishing to do, and thereby benefit from their experience.
I'll probably try a Belkin, Buslink or Macally hub from someplace like CompUSA, so that if it doesn't work well I can at least take it back.
Thanks for you input.

• Verbatim 320GB FireWire/USB Portable Hard Drive Won't Mount

Hello ... I have a Verbatim 320GB FireWire/USB Portable Hard Drive that won't mount. The drive has only been used a handful of times ... it is self powered. I accidentally disconnected the drive without dragging it to the trash first .... so I got the "improper disk removal" error. Now the drive won't mount at all. Is it dead or in some kind of frozen state? Any ideas how I can get it back up and running??
Thanks

Might try Data Rescue II...

• IOGear GUH 420  Firewire/USB Hub

I purchased this IOGear GUH420 Firewire/USB hub to use on my new MacPro 2.66 Intel desktop. Ever since I installed it, my firewire devices have been acting up and I couldn't ever figure it out. I was having lockups, spinning beachballs, monkeys flying out the floppy drive slot (oh yea, no floppy drive). Suffice it to say my new macpro wasn't acting right.
I did some research today and found out that some Firewire hubs do not like the voltage that comes from the new G5's and macPro desktops.
When I did the system profile, all my Firewire showed was Firewire 800/400 or the like. No devices, no hubs!
When I disconnect the IOGear hub and reboot... viola! Firewire in system profile shows all connected devices and everything runs much faster and I have zero errors!
So far, I would have to conclude that the IOGear hub is not compatable with the macpro, or mine has just been defective all this time.
Anyone else have issues with this hub?
Thanks,
matt caswell
http://www.thesabrehood.org

UPON FURTHER REVIEW
and extensive swaptronics....
The problem is not the HUB, it's the ADS Firewire 800 external drive case. It has 2 FW800 ports on the back and 1 FW400 port. I guess I assumed too much when I thought that I could chain a 400 device off the fW800 case.
When I connect ONLY the FW800 case to the MacPro, and do not connect any FW400 devices off the case, the firewire profile in system profiler shows everything as it should be.
I CAUSED THE PROBLEM AND NOT THE IOGear hub. I have posted my stupidity in case anyone was influenced by my previously incorrect assumption about the problem.

• ADS Tech Dual Link Firewire/USB 2 PC card

Hi all
I purchased a ADS Tech Dual Link Firewire/USB 2 (DLX-181) PC card a couple of years ago and it worked fine under early versions of Panther. Lately when I've tried to use it, I get a kernal Panic the instant I plug it in. I'm using Tiger's drivers for it, not the driver that came with it (it was USB 2 drivers for Jaguar).
is the card no good? is there a way to reset the card bus? or to run any kind of diagonistic?
ADS tech support has been no help whatsoever.

tried the card in another powerbook and it kernal panicked immediately. the card is toast.

• Firewire/USB cable

The combination firewire/usb cable you can get on the Apple store, can you plug the firewire into your mac and the USB into the AC Adapter to charge your iPod, I am planning on getting one later this year and I want to use firewire.
P.S. Is it worth my while getting an iPod now, or wil a new one be out soon?

No one hear knows that answer and it is against the rules of this discussion area to speculate on future Apple products.

• Does a firewire/usb converter exist ?

iMac has no firewire port ?  Need to migrate files from my LaCie-mini external which has no usb port. Does a firewire/usb converter exist ?

No it doesn't unfortunately.
Firewire reset, usb reset…
Shut down the computer.
Disconnect all FireWire devices and all other cables, except the keyboard and mouse cable(s).
Disconnect the computer from the power outlet and wait for 3 to 5 minutes.
Plug the computer back in and turn it on.
Reconnect the FireWire device(s) (one at a time if there is more than one) and test. Test with each FireWire port if you have more than one.
