Generic document icons for applications in Simple Finder

I have an account setup with Parental Controls and using the Simple Finder. In the My Applications folder of the simple finder, all of the apps show up with the default blank document icon instead of the correct application icon. How do I fix this?

Hi Warren -
I imagine you already tried this, but just to be sure, did you change the default .tiff app in Finder? Does that change the icon? If so, what happens when you then change the default back to your app?
If the above doesn't help, what happens when you change the Bundle Name and Executable File name of your app, then set the default .tiff app to the "new" app? Not saying this is practical if you've already distributed your app, but it might help to know the result.
Here's some misc info that may give you more ideas: [http://ask.metafilter.com/67832/Changing-filetypes-icons-in-OS-X].
Btw, we have at least two or three experts around here who will probably know exactly what to do. I'm only filling in until one of them shows up. So if none of the above is useful, stay tuned.

  • Generic document Icons without Application Signature

    I have a mix of document icons on the desktop. All are saved in Word or Excell but some are seen as .doc icons (Grey) while other have the Word Signature (Blue with a W).
    Have no idea why that has happened or what to do.
    In the good old days this was fixed by rebuilding the desktop.

    Answered - I did not know that the folder/finder view has the option to see an icon or as a generic.

  • When I create a New Folder (on the desktop or in Finder), the system uses the Generic Document Icon instead of the Generic Folder Icon. How can I change this back?

    When I create a New Folder (on the desktop or in Finder), the system uses the Generic Document Icon instead of the Generic Folder Icon. How can I change this back?
    All of a sudden I noticed that most of the folders on my computer were no longer using the folder icon, but the generic document icon. I had to manually change back the icon being used by opening Get Info for each folder and copying and pasting the generic folder icon from some folders that remained unchanged. Now whenever I create a New Folder (right click -> "New Folder"), the icon that shows up is the generic document icon (white page with top right corner turned down). And I have to manually change it so it shows up as a folder in Finder or on my desktop. I don't know why or how this switch happened. All of the folders now on my computer look ok, but I need to change the default so when I create a New Folder it uses the correct icon.
    I have also Forced Relaunch of my Finder and rebooted the system. I downloaded Candybar but am not sure what will fix anything, so I haven't proceeded.
    Anyone know how I can do this? Thanks.

    Anyone?

  • [SOLVED] Set icons for applications in XFCE

    Hi,
    I was wondering if I can specify the icons for applications. Currently my gVim is using a "general" icon when in the panel but has the right icon when I create a launcher. This is how it looks like. Any suggestions?

    Hi,
    Yep, I have a gvim.desktop in /usr/share/applications. What it contains is:
    Type=Application
    TryExec=gvim
    Exec=gvim
    Icon=gvim
    Terminal=false
    Type=Application
    TryExec=gvim
    Exec=gvim
    Icon=gvim
    Terminal=false
    There is also gvim.png in /usr/share/pixmaps.

    Thank you for your reply. After a lot of fruitless searches, I hit on a page that offered the same wisdom you did. I feel like rather a fool for not knowing that. Grr. I really appreciate your answer, and that you didn't end it with "dummy." Cheers to you. Hope someone does something kind for you today.

  • Custom Icon for application file

    I can make director allow me to have a custom icon for appliacation file.
    In director I have attempted this several times where I have tried to have my appliaction file have an icon.  I have purchased two icon program Candy Bar and Fastincs trying to remedy this problem.
    As you see here I am using an ins file created in Fastincs.  Now here is an image to the path and the icon itself Applipcations/ Adobe Director 11/3 HorseLogo.mac.ins
    So there is the setup now when I complile for my program file I get this.
    See the grey Director icon I don't want that I want the three horse logo.
    I also tried to assign the logo after publishing the file.
    then I drag my icon file in
    The program created in director still wont see the icon file.
    If I use Candy bar (icon application)  I get a  different result. The icon works
    in both finder and on the task bar
    This is exactly what I want.
    I works until I try to move the entire package into an installer program  I am using BitRock.  When I compile the installation program then try to run the application I get the following message
    If I choose ignore the install continues.  But I have no icon.
    I am desperate , weeping , screaming , and almost a lost cause, any help any help at all I could really use.
    Thanks

    Hi Robin,
    I'm more of a PC person rather than Mac. I would recommend you look at the Resource and Icon Editor page at:
    http://collab.directorforum.com/Resource_and_Icon_Editor
    It may fix your icon issue from Director.

  • Missing Applications in Simple Finder

    I created a user account and "limited" what applications they can use. However, after logging into that account, I found that the shortcuts/aliases of some of these applications are missing from the "My Applications" folder in Simple Finder. (For example, Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint shortcuts/aliases should be there but are not.) Any ideas?

  • Icon for quick view in finder

    I can't see the icon for quick view in the finder-bar in the Leopard? How do I turn it on?

    If you go to View > Customize toolbar you can drag the quick view icon (looks like an eye) to the toolbar in the finder window.

  • Generic disk icon for iPod on Desktop.

    Hi,
    I hope somebody can help me fix this. On desktop I have a generic disk image icon for my iPod, I would like to have the old iPod icon but it won't change on desktop. On the other hand, on save and open dialogs, the iPod icon is correct.
    What do I need to have fixed on desktop so it shows the icon I want for my iPod?
    Archive and Install is not a solution, already done that.
    I really don't want to do an erase and install.
    BTW, when creating a new user all icons are correct on desktop.
    Thanks,
    AJ

    While logged into the other admin account, delete the bad account, selecting the save data option, recreate the bad account using the same username/password combo, log out and back into the new account. If the problem's are solved, open the saved data dmg file in /Users/Deleted Users/, open the /Library/Preferences/ folder from the saved data, open the current /Users/restored account/Library/Preferences/ folder, and slowly copy plist files from the saved data folder to the current one that don't exist in it. Log out and back in to ensure there's no conflict and things still work correctly. Resolving conflicts or identifying corrupt plist files is a laborious process. Good luck.

  • Getting icons for application

    Hi all,
    I'm adding new features to the application I'm working on, and am looking for Icons for the new features. I can't design icons, never had any experience, but they are very common icons (a phone and an email icon). Just wondering is there any free repository of icons that I could use on the web? I persume it wouldn't be legal to screen grab from MS word/outlook or thunderbird or something like that?
    thanks,
    Justin

    thanks for that. But is there an extended set of java icons? The icons I need wern't there unfortunately.
    thanks,

  • Does Lion OS come with new icons for applications?

    I accidentally deleted the default icons for System Preferences and some other apps on my Macbook Pro and was going to reinstall Leopard to get the default icons back. After they announced Lion OS, I wonder, would installing Lion come with new default icons?

    You must be running Snow Leopard in order to install Lion regardless of the icon issue.

    Apple - OS X Lion - Get Lion in July. Only from the Mac App Store.
    You can reinstall Leopard without erasing the startup disk but as with any installation, backup all important files first.

  • Getting Document Icons to appear in the Finder

    I wanted to change the icons that would appear on the .tiff files that my Cocoa multiple document application creates. I did the following: I deleted the reference to the old .icns file from my XCode project. I trashed the old.icns file and emptied the trash. I created a new .icns file using two tiffs: one for the icons and one for the masks using Icon Composer. I put the new .icns file in the project directory. I added it to the project in the resources folder. When I click on it the project shows it in the editor correctly. I edited the project target properties so the UTI is public.tiff, the Icon File is the correct name of the .icns file including the .icns extension. I checked the package box to make sure the .icns file is included in the project bundle. I clicked on the .icns file in the project and hit command I to look at the file info for the .icns file. Under the Targets tab the Target Membership is shown as checked as a member of the application. I cleaned the targets. I moved the applications from the Build and Debug folders to the trash and emptied the trash. I restarted the computer. I logged out and back on. I restarted the finder. I rebuilt the project debug target. When I run my application and save my document as a tiff on the desk top it has the generic icon but if I get info for the file it still has the now extremely non-existent old icon as its preview. If I move the file into a folder it has the old icon. It looks to me like the finder is the culprit here. It seems to be retaining the old icon somewhere.
    Any more things I can try?

  • Classic showing generic document icons

    Recently had trouble whilst running Quark 4.1 under Classic in OS 10.2.8, kernal panic's meaning needed to shut computer down. since running disk and permissions repair through my start up cd things seem to be better, however now when i look for image documents, whether tif, jpg or pdf, Classic only shows generic icons. any idea what's causing this and how i can fix it? Tried rebuilding desktop but no joy.

    I would try to re-set both Open With… and Use this application to open all documents like this…
    If that made no difference I would first Trash the Photoshop Preferences, then perhaps reinstall Photoshop.
    It's unlikely to be affected by QuarkXPress kernel panics - which you shouldn't have.
    Is your XPress at least 4.11 (175) and any third-party Xtensions rated for your versions fo Classic and X?
    If they're still happening, I'd start another thread looking first at how often you get kernal panics from XPress, whether they happen with random documents or there's a pattern, whether they happen with new documents or only with old one, whether they still happen with no Xtensions active and even before that, how much memory is allocated to XPress?

  • Icons for applications now showing up in itunes

    For some reason when I add a new application to my iTunes applications for my iphone the display icon does not show up in iTunes. It just gives a generic icon. Is there any way to fix this? I have tried several things with no positive results.
    Any one else have this issue or had it and resolved it?

    Again, I have fixed the problem myself with NO SUPPORT from ANYONE HERE! AGAIN THANKS FOR NOTHING!!
    But I will share my solution. I had moved my iTunes folder with all my artwork to another drive but that drive is no longer connected and left in the shortcut to that folder. However for some reason my iTunes was able to see artwork for my songs but not for the apps. I repointed it to another folder and the icons started returning to the apps I had downloaded.
    Once again I am my own best tech support! Hands DOWN!
