Generic Hosting Oracle XE 11 g

Hello community,
In my opinion XE is the counterpart to other free Databases which can be hosted.
We want to host data from a customer in our XE-Database and develop applications from it.
Oracle says that is it not the sense of XE to host Data from external customers. But i dont mind to the SENSE of this. There should be an agreement, a law etc. saying this is not allowed.
But I cannot find anything to it. Oracle itself wont give any more information about this.
So I am asking you. Does anyone use the XE for Hosting of external Data? Is this allowed? Surely we could switch to something like PostGre...but I dont think this is the SENSE....
Surely this is just a test and we will purchase SE after this. But its just a pilot scheme...so XE will do it.
Thanks in advance
Thorsten

So my Idea was to offer a XE Database with Hosting (which is surely 0€) because the Hosting needed just to be logged by the service vendor.Well, you can't offer XE hosting.
We are currently a company of 3 employees. So we just dont have the money to buy a SE. SE One list prices start at 900 $ for the license plus something around 200 $ for support if you use the minimum license (5 Name User Plus). Of course, this doesn't include hosting yet, but in my opinion this is a reasonable price considering the fact that you don't have XE restrictions concerning memory, CPU and disk usage, and you get access to patches, etc.
And our service vendor is just forwardung mails in which they quote oracle with terms even to the SE.
The SE is limited too. And in the same way. Its vor internal purposes. You also mentioned that your vendor indicated you may need a hosting license. This would extend the SE license to allow third-party processing on your instance(s). Probably this won't be economic if you have just one customer to offer the hosting to...
Perhaps you have to adapt your development and deployment scenario to meet the license agreements to avoid hosting. For instance, you can develop your application(s) using an OTN-licensed database (all editions for free) as long as you don't use your customers data for it (there are some other restrictions, but you know these terms, so...). You can deploy these applications at your customer's site. Your customer needs a proper licensed database as target. I guess this could even be an XE instance, as long as your customer doesn't need more. This is, by the way, one of the intentions to offer XE - start small and then grow to some paid license.
Of course, you could also develop your applications remotely at your customer's site.
So if oracle wants to compete against open source Database it just makes sense to offer the XE for free even for external usage.I'm not sure that Oracle aims for the Open Source database market with Oracle Database. But do you know who own MySQL these days? ;)
And they just cant say that I am not allowed to this because of a point which is even to the SE while saying it can be done with the SE. That's no point to be discussed here...
Anyway, I don't think that's exactly what your vendor meant to say. Once more, I remind you of the hosting license mentioned earlier. But perhaps the description of your usage scenario you provided here wasn't precise enough, and what you are up to could actually be achieved without a hosting license. Perhaps it's also a matter of how you deploy your application...

    Which OS? Which sound card?
    Something went wrong when you updated your drivers.
    Were there any error messages when you updated your sound drivers?
    Can you adjust volume on Windows 'mixer' (Control Panel-->Sounds and Multimedia --> Audio tab:Sound Playback:Volume)? If not then somehow you have maybe 'lost (control over)' windows kmixer.
    If you got XP then try if reinstalling SP2 helps anything. Check also first, if "Audio Service" is running (on services manager).

  • Generic Host process for WIN32 encountered an error and needed to close

    Hi,
      I hv installed SAP ECC6.0 SR3 on WIndows 2003 R2 Enterprise Edition. Many times i get an popup message on Windows Server "Generic Host process for WIN32 encountered an error and needed to close"
    I hv checked the Event Viewer, in Event Viewer it shows the application error.
    Consequences of this error is that my Transport path //hostname/sapmnt/trans becomes inaccesible, and I have to take the restart of Windows server to solve the problem. ONce Windows server is restarted for some time transports work, Again when receiving the same error popup on Windows, Transport path goes down.
    Can anyone give input on this???

    Hello,
    You have posted a question that is related to system transports. Unfortunately this category is not related to these kind of questions. SAP TM deals with logistics in the real world - moving pallets, containers, loading trucks, etc.
    To learn more about SAP TM please visit http://service.sap.com/scm-tm
    Therefore I will now move this thread to the category Software Logistics. Thank you for your understanding.

  • Memory used to host Oracle VM server, whats left for the guests?

    I've built my first test Oracle VM server on a small celeron powered machine with 1.5GB RAM. I created a PV OEL5 guest and initially gave it 512MB RAM. Now if I increase this to 1024MB and try to start the system I get the error...
    failed:<OVSException: no server selected to run vm('/OVS/running_pool/50_OELr5r3') memory=1024> StackTrace: File "/opt/ovs-agent-2.2/OVSSiteVM.py", line 77, in start_vm raise e
    A little research implies this error is because not enough memory is available to run the OS. So how much from the 1.5GB of RAM is actually available for guests? I would be surprised to learn that 512MB is used JUST for the host environment. Doing a cat /proc/meminfo gives me the following;
    *[root@ovm ~]# cat /proc/meminfo*
    MemTotal:       545968 kB
    MemFree:        335464 kB
    Buffers:         75120 kB
    Cached:          58392 kB
    SwapCached:          0 kB
    Active:         143920 kB
    Inactive:        22356 kB
    So 533MB available to the host OS... This leaves just under a gig For the guests, but I can't find where the max is detailed. I can't find anything in the docs which detail how much resources the base Oracle VM server uses and if it's possible to tune this.

You can lower this, but don't go too low. I usually recommend about 10% of total memory be dedicated to Dom0 up to a max of 3.5GB, so on a 1.5GB box, you could probably drop to 150MB or so. Keep in mind that Dom0 is a 32-bit kernel, so you don't want to go over 3.5GB without good reason.

  • Do we need Oracle HTTP server to host Oracle Apex ?

    We are completely new to this Oracle Apex.
    Wanted to know the licensing part of it , before we get into it.
    I guess Oracle Apex is free as it comes with the Oracle database license.
    1) Do we need some kind of HTTP server to host the Apex on the browser ?
    2) Does any HTTP server will work with Oracle Apex ?

  • 64-bit database and 32-bit companion on same host oracle home problem

    Hi.
    We have following situation in production.
    Installed database version is 10.02.04. 64-bit,host Windows 2008 x64, now we are trying to install 32-bit companion cd and this time we are trying not to loose/kill our 64-bit oracle home inventory.
    Last time 32-bit version was installed our 64-bit home vanished and attachHome script always returned error, it seems to me that 32-bit and 64-bit versions overwrite installation info to each other, only last install is visible.
    When I run setup for 32-bit companion I don't see anything in installed products(it's not listing 64-bit oracle homes). We had a lot of problems with this,patch failing, no way to install anything anymore for 64-bit version...
    So is it possible to install 32 and 64 bit homes on same host, can they coexist, and keep both homes(OUI homes info), are there any special steps or something?

    Well I looked at Inventory.xml file, after 32-bit version was installed entry for 64-bit install was gone.
    Although I can not confirm that 100 percent because 32-bit installation was not done by me, maybe other guy who did it manually delete it as I did with 32-bit version to return my 64-bit inventory.
    So my options are to backup 64-bit inventory, install 32-bit companion my 64-bit inventory will be overwritten, backup 32-bit, delete 32-bit, restore 64-bit inventory and I'll have active 64-bit inventory. Now I have inventory for 64-bit and I can restore 32-bit or 64-bit inventory when I need it.
    This woks by is there another way...somebody...

  • Generic Connectivity -Oracle(10gR2) to MS SQL server - Creating DSN

    Hi,
    I am trying to connect Oracle 10gR2(10.2.0.4.0) on linux x86 to MS Sql Server on Windows XP
    I am referring the Metalink Note 264567.1 and using DataDirect ODBC drivers for the same
    I have a question here
    Do I need to create the System DSN on windows XP or on Oracle (linux server)?
    If it is on linux server, how to I create the System DSN on the Linux?
    Thanks in Advance
    Regards,
    Pk

    Hi,
    You need to create a DSN on the box where the HSODBC (the oracle db) is running, so in this case the Linux box.
    I'd assume there's documentation that comes with the 3rd party odbc driver on how to create a DSN with it. It probably depends on which version of driver manager you're using (pardon my ignorance, I do strictly Windows) so you'd probably want to check the docs for the driver manager. For example, if using unixODBC, the docs are on [their web site|http://www.unixodbc.org/].
    Hope it helps,

  • R/3 and BW installation one host/oracle.

    If somebody had tried BW installation on the existing system which has already R/3 system?
    46 C SP2 R/3 and BW 3.0 B on windows 2000 server and orcale 8.1 DB.
    How MCOD works?
    First I installed R/3 on oracle then
    installed BW with option into existing DB instead of new DB. But it is not working, please help?
    Is there any additional settings/parameters needs to be changed?

    MCOD should allow this as long as your sap sids are different.....
    I would look at RAM on the machine, as you install multiple SAP instances, each instance will be allocated RAM and will "reserve" it. As you start up each instance your pool of resource go down....
    check in the work directory specifically the dev_xxxx files, dev_disp dev_wxxx files to see why instances will not start up...
    If you have enoough memory and use MCOD it should start up fine...

    Affected Oracle Vsn : Generic
    Summary:
    NEW: MICROSOFT CHANGED OLE INTERFACE FOR OFFICE97
    +=+
    Solution Description:
    =====================
    WORD:
    Microsoft made some changes in the upgraded version of Word
    which cause it
    to
    come up as a hidden application. Customer had to add "AppShow"
    to his code,
    and ole automation works fine now.
    EXCEL:
    The issue here is that Microsoft changed the object "Workbooks",
    which is
    now
    a property of object "Excel.Application". So, replace the call:
    workbooks := ole2.invoke_obj(application, 'workbooks');
    with
    workbooks := ole2.get_obj_property(application, 'workbooks');
    For example:
    PACKAGE BODY olewrap IS
    -- Declare the OLE objects
    application OLE2.OBJ_TYPE;
    workbooks OLE2.OBJ_TYPE;
    workbook OLE2.OBJ_TYPE;
    worksheets OLE2.OBJ_TYPE;
    worksheet OLE2.OBJ_TYPE;
    cell OLE2.OBJ_TYPE;
    args OLE2.LIST_TYPE;
    procedure init is
    begin
    -- Start Excel and make it visible
    application := OLE2.CREATE_OBJ('Excel.Application');
    ole2.set_property(application,'Visible', 'True');
    workbooks := OLE2.GET_OBJ_PROPERTY(application, 'Workbooks');
    args:=OLE2.CREATE_ARGLIST;
    OLE2.ADD_ARG(args, 'c:\test\ms\excel\test.xls');
    workbook := OLE2.GET_OBJ_PROPERTY(workbooks, 'Open', args);
    OLE2.DESTROY_ARGLIST(args);
    worksheets := OLE2.GET_OBJ_PROPERTY(workbook, 'Worksheets');
    worksheet := OLE2.GET_OBJ_PROPERTY(worksheets,'Add');
    -- Return object handle to cell A1 on the new Worksheet
    args:=OLE2.CREATE_ARGLIST;
    OLE2.ADD_ARG(args, 1);
    OLE2.ADD_ARG(args, 1);
    cell:=OLE2.GET_OBJ_PROPERTY(worksheet, 'Cells', args);
    OLE2.DESTROY_ARGLIST(args);
    -- Set the contents of the cell to 'Hello Excel!'
    OLE2.SET_PROPERTY(cell, 'Value', 'Hello Excel!');
    END;
    procedure addstuff is
    BEGIN
    -- Return object handle to cell A1 on the new Worksheet
    args := OLE2.CREATE_ARGLIST;
    OLE2.ADD_ARG(args, 2);
    OLE2.ADD_ARG(args, 2);
    cell:=OLE2.INVOKE_OBJ(worksheet, 'Cells', args);
    OLE2.DESTROY_ARGLIST(args);
    -- Set the contents of the cell to 'This is the added stuff'
    OLE2.SET_PROPERTY(cell, 'Value', 'This is the added stuff');
    END;
    procedure stop is
    begin
    -- Release the OLE objects
    args:=OLE2.CREATE_ARGLIST;
    OLE2.ADD_ARG(args, 'C:\OLETEST2.XLS');
    OLE2.INVOKE(worksheet, 'SaveAs', args);
    OLE2.DESTROY_ARGLIST(args);
    OLE2.RELEASE_OBJ(cell);
    OLE2.RELEASE_OBJ(worksheet);
    OLE2.RELEASE_OBJ(worksheets);
    OLE2.RELEASE_OBJ(workbook);
    OLE2.RELEASE_OBJ(workbooks);
    OLE2.RELEASE_OBJ(application);
    END;
    Solution Explanation:
    =====================
    Microsoft changed some of the OLE calling interfaces for the
    Office97
    products. Thus, some of your existing OLE calls may need to be
    changed to
    comply with the Office97 interface.
    Consult with Microsoft and your Office97 documentation or more
    information
    on
    what the OLE interface is for the Office97 suite of products.

    NEW: OLE AUTOMATION NO LONGER WORKS AFTER UPGRADE TO OFFICE97
    +=+
    Problem Description:
    ====================
    You have upgraded to Microsoft Office97 and OLE calls in your
    Developer/2000
    applications no longer work.
    Problem Explanation:
    ====================
    Examples:
    You are using Forms to send data to a Microsoft Word document
    and print
    letters, using ole automation. This worked fine with Word 6.0,
    but when
    they
    upgraded to Word 8.0 (Office97), the letters do not get printed.
    When you try to get an object handle to the Excel97 Workbooks
    collection
    using
    the OLE2 Package, you get the following error:
    FRM-40735: WHEN-BUTTON-PRESSED trigger raised unhandled exception
    ORA-305500
    The Same code works fine against Excel 7.0.
