Generic Icons Everywhere, EXCEPT the trash??  Trash shows doc preview.

For some reason my new 20"iMac with 10.5.1 will not show the document preview as it's icon on the desktop, or in any normal folder. This stinks cause it's a neat feature that I would really like to use...
However, if I move the files to the trash, live icon preview works just fine?!?! The link below is a pic of the situation at hand - anyone have any ideas?
http://www.stormcell.com/desktop.png

You need to go to View Options and click on the little box next to "Show Icon Preview" then click to Use As Defaults. Then click "Always Open In * View* at the top and that folder will be fixed with those preferences.
Then keep in mind that a lot of file types will not show previews. Do a Google search for Quick Look plugins to expand your options, if it works in Quick Look it should also work in icon previews. And even then some files that are supposed to show them won't, it's a bit finicky. But just select the file and hit the space bar to see it in QL
If you try Cover Flow it will have a different set of files it will preview. A TIFF file will preview in Quick Look and in icon view, but will show up in Cover Flow as the generic app icon that saved it.

  • New tabs do not include the history icons as before. The option to show images on a page does not appear in upper right of page.

The solution in the FAQ's is clear, but the small icon that is supposed to be showing in the upper right of a new Tab page are not showing up so that I can get the images to appear. I recently installed Java 7 and after that they had disappeared. Can you help me get them back? They are very helpful.

You can reset the browser.newtab.url pref on the <b>about:config</b> page via the right-click context menu to the default value.
You can open the <b>about:config</b> page via the location bar and you can accept the warning and click "I'll be careful" to continue
You can use the SearchReset extension to reset some preferences to the default values.

Note that the SearchReset extension only runs once and then uninstalls automatically, so it won't show on the "Firefox > Add-ons" page (about:addons).

  • I would like create a folder on my desktop who's icons acts like the trashes.

Apple script and or automator help.
I have a folder on my desktop that has a trash icon. I want the icon to automatically change depending on if there is something in the folder or not.
Is it a folder action with some scripting in it? How would I do that?

This was a feature of OS 9 & earlier.
There were many tools to emulate this behaviour, this old one claims to be… Updated For Mavericks!

Try that app if you really want this feature, frankly I think now may be time to consider moving away from this behaviour.
Search for other apps if that one is bad, it has been done before.

  • Can't find the Trash Icon in email

How do I get the trash icon to show on my email on the upper right side?  Right now it only shows the "Move to another folder icon,"  the arrow for reply, forward, print and the icon for writing a new email.  My friends Ipads show these 3 icons and also the trash icon.
I can't find any settings to display this icon on my email.
    Thanks...

There most certainly is a trash can icon in the preinstalled mail app on the iPad. I mentioned gmail to the OP because I'm pretty sure that gmail uses an archiving system and no trash can icon appears in that account. Or at least I think that is how gmail on the iPad works.

  • No files show up in the trash

Using an EMac and OS 10.3.9. Mail works fine EXCEPT the trash folder does not show files when they are placed in it either by dragging or menu choice. I repair permissions, rebuild, etc. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated before I have to reinstall the system. All other aspects of Mail work correctly.

    Hello Noah
In you Mail Preferences, in Accounts: Special mailboxes, Trash, there is selected to Erase delete messages when they are a certain age, then if it is set to One day old, then they will be deleted almost immediately (one day old).
Put a message in from yesterday, and you won't see it again.
You can adjust the time to be longer before they are erased from the trash if you wish, though setting it to never is a long time

  • Why doesn't the trash can show items in it anymore?

I know there are items in the trash can, but when I open it to take items out or to see what's in there, no icons appear in the trash can.

To see what's in the trash:
Launch Terminal and copy & paste these commands:
    cd ~/.Trash
    Press Return
    Then enter ls Press return
This will list of the contents of your trash, so you can if there's anything you need. If not, follow these instructions:
Go to /Applications /Utilities/Terminal and launch it.
At the prompt, copy and paste this command
    sudo rm -rf ~/.Trash
    Press Return.
You will be asked to enter your admin password. It will be invisible.
    Enter it and press Return.
Log out and back in or restart.

  • How do I override "error code -61" when attempting to put things in the Trash? Cannot empty Trash or use Secure Empty Trash.

How do I override "error code -61" when attempting to put items in the Trash?  Cannot empty Trash or use Secure Empty Trash. I have a MacBook OS X 10.5.8

The reason why some of the files are blocking the trash from emptying is because of specific ".app" files from third party companies like Adobe products. Not the user files or the various help documents but instead the actual mother program. Here's how to fix this problem:
    1) remove from the trash all the actual software programs like Photoshop, InDesign, DreamWeaver and so on and put them on the desktop.
    2) Command "I" (info) and when the dialog box opens go to the "Name & Extension" text box and remove the ".app" from the software name. Example: Photoshop.app change to Photoshop.
    3) the program icon will change to a "folder icon".
    4) put the folder icon back into the trash and you should be able to now empty the trash.
If you continue to get the error code 8003 it's because you may still have one or more software programs in the trash that needs to go through this process. Remember - it's not the user files or help documents or supporting files that is causing this but instead the "actual product programs".

  • Photos now carry generic icons instead of a the actual picture

While taking screenshots one day, I noticed that all the pictures on my desktop had that ugly, generic picture icon (you know, the sheet of paper with the picture of Preview's icon on it?) instead of the mini copy of the actual photo they usually do. I went back through my pictures folder and half of them retained their cute little copy of themselves, and the other half are the generic blank.
    WHY?!
I didn't realize how useful this feature was until this happened, and I want it back! Other types of files that generally do this, like PDFs remain thankfully unharmed. Help, please

OK, this seems the closest thread to what's going on here. I've got a late-2008 Macbook Pro, 10.5.8. Icons on the desktop and in finder windows are showing generic icons instead of the application-specific ones. Funny thing is, if I do a relaunch of the Finder (option-click/hold Finder icon in dock to bring up the menu), the specific icons will show up, but after a second or two will switch back to the generic ones. ??

  • Permissions Armaggedon, Evernote Crashes, Back-up Disasters, and Passwords Required To Empty The Trash

I just bought a new Macbook Pro with OSX Lion 10.7.2.  I had a 2009 Macbook and I migrated all the information from that notebook to my new one.  I used a G-Drive External Hard Drive, and the migration seemed to have worked perfectly.
At first everything worked like a mac - perfectly.
The next day there were several problems.  The only thing I think happened in between the following problems and the flawless functioning was a software update.  I've attached screen shots of everything I could.
    Here are the problems:
    1. Permissions Armageddon
Every time i try to modify one of the documents that I migrated from the other macbook, it tells me another application changed the file, and if I would like to save my changes anyway.
I click "Save Anyway", but then it says I don't have permission to alter the document.  I've repaired permissions on my mac several times to no avail.
I can fix this for each doc using the following sequence:
Open Doc in Finder -> Command I (Get Info) -> Sharing & Permissions -> change all the users to "Read & Write"
The problem is this takes about a minute for each doc, and it seems like there has to be a workaround.  I've also tried selecting an entire file and applying permissions to the enclosed documents.  This never does anything.
I want to be able to open a doc and edit it without needing to change permissions every time.
I don't know how to use Terminal and I'm afraid I'll mess up my computer if i try something.
    2. Back-Up Disasters
I turned on Time Machine and every time it backs up it says its backing up the entire contents of my mac.  Shouldn't it just back up the new changes?
    3. Passwords Required To Empty The Trash & Add Items To The Trash
Every time I add a document, application, or file of any kind to the trash, I'm asked for my password.  Has anyone else experienced and/or resolved this issue?
I've heard others say this is simply an extra security feature, but I wanted to make sure.  If anyone from Apple sees this - please remove this redundant and unecessary feature that wastes so much time.
    4. Evernote Crashes Upon Launch
Evernote crashes every time i open the application.  Any idea whats causing this?  Iv'e tried moving it to the trash, deleting it, and re-installing it with no luck.
Thanks for your help Apple Community!

  • Why do I get error code -8003 when attempting to empty the trash?

I moved a number of folders from a back-up drive (using Time Machine) to the trash, and have had no success in getting them out of the trash.  Option+Empty, Option+Secure Empty Trash, after using Disk Utility to repair permissions and then try again, and the TrashIt! app.. nothing is working.  I'm not in need of the space, I just want to get rid of the items.  Any assistance would be greatly appreciated, as I can't even find 'Error Code -8003' anywhere.  tx

  • Firefox icon appears in taskbar but everytime I open a new webpage another Firefox icon appears behind the first. I've had as many as 10. How can I stop this?

Don't know what else to say except that I've tried every suggestion to stop the multiple tiled icons in the task bar as I could find. When I say tiled I mean that the second and third (etc.) icons are slightly offset to the right of the top one. If there are several there and I click on the top one every page I visited but did not close before going on to another website will appear in a small window just above the taskbar.

This looks normal to me, I tend to have several windows open at the same time. I get the same tiling for other applications, such as MS Word and Adobe Reader. There might be a Windows-wide setting for this.
If you only have one window but multiple tabs in the window, you should be able to turn off the separate display of tabs on the Taskbar in the Options dialog.
I'm sure Fred would have directed you here for that:
orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Options > Tabs
Uncheck the box for "Show tab previews in the Windows taskbar"

  • Generic icons are displayed after visiting bookmarks instead of Favicons.

    1. I have done multiple searches over the past month trying to find a resolution to this issue without any success. Somewhere during the last two Firefox updates all of my bookmarks are now displaying the generic icon instead of the specific icon for that URL (i.e. www.doctoroz.com).
    2. The few responses, to the multiple posts for this same issue, have been no help (with a couple needing to be deleted as they don't answer the question (padding posts?)).
    3. Could a Master Thread be created grouping related questions and responses?

If this is a feature, it sucks!

  • I have an alias of one of my external hard drives in my trash. When I click on "show original" all my external H D 's and my Mac hard drive show up. How do I delete this icon from the trash without loosing all my files?

I have an alias of one of my external hard drives in my trash. When I tried to delete it, it showed that I was deleting 80,000 files and counting. I stopped the delete process and when I clicked on "show original" all my external H.D.'s and my Mac hard drive show up. How do I delete this alias from the trash without loosing all my files? When I tried to drag it back to the desk top, it just made a duplicate and remained in the trash. When I turned off the external H.D., the trash was then empty. Tried rebooting the computer and then turning the external hard drive back on and the alias shows up in the trash again. Much help appreciated.
    Rich

In Finder's Menu, select Go menu>Go to Folder, and go to "/volumes". (no quotes)
Volumes is where an alias to your hard drive ("/" at boot) is placed at startup, and where all the "mount points" for auxiliary drives are created for you to access them. This folder is normally hidden from view.
Drives with an extra 1 on the end have a side-effect of mounting a drive with the same name as the system already think exists. Try trashing the duplicates with a 1 or 2 if there are no real files in them, and reboot.
    If it does contain data...
