Generic icons for Office on desktop

I copied the files on the desktop of my Air running 10.6.8 to a drive, and then copied those files to the desktop on my new Air running 10.10.2. The icons of all (and only) the Office files have gone generic. When I drag a Word file with the correct icon from a folder to the desktop, its icon goes generic.
What's going on and what can I do to change this behavior?

Back up all data before continuing.
Please triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
mv Des*/.DS_Store .Trash/
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing the key combination command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear below what you entered. You can then quit Terminal.
Relaunch the Finder, then empty the Trash. Test.

  • I cannot find the icon for office:mac 08 word on my doc, where did it go?

I cannot find the icon for Office: mac 08 word on my doc. I downloaded the whole Office: mac 2008 Home & Student Edition about a year ago and just recently the word icon disappeared. The other Office icons are still visible and i am able to use them but i cannot find the word application anywhere.

Have you used spotlight search? Typed "word" and the application doesn't appear? If it doesn't then it probably isn't around anymore.... so hit command + space ... and type "word"... what happens?

  • Generic disk icon for iPod on Desktop.

    Hi,
I hope somebody can help me fix this. On desktop I have a generic disk image icon for my iPod, I would like to have the old iPod icon but it won't change on desktop. On the other hand, on save and open dialogs, the iPod icon is correct.
What do I need to have fixed on desktop so it shows the icon I want for my iPod?
Archive and Install is not a solution, already done that.
I really don't want to do an erase and install.
BTW, when creating a new user all icons are correct on desktop.
    Thanks,
    AJ

While logged into the other admin account, delete the bad account, selecting the save data option, recreate the bad account using the same username/password combo, log out and back into the new account. If the problem's are solved, open the saved data dmg file in /Users/Deleted Users/, open the /Library/Preferences/ folder from the saved data, open the current /Users/restored account/Library/Preferences/ folder, and slowly copy plist files from the saved data folder to the current one that don't exist in it. Log out and back in to ensure there's no conflict and things still work correctly. Resolving conflicts or identifying corrupt plist files is a laborious process. Good luck.

  • Bridge CS4 showing generic icon for TIF... sometimes

I recently installed CS4 and Bridge, all updated to the latest versions.
    Here's the scenario:
Desktop running Windows XP Home with all updates and patches applied running CS4.
Laptop running Nikon Scan to acquire scans using Coolscan 5000.
    Both PCs on a network.
I open CS4 on the desktop PC.
I open Bridge using the icon at the top of the CS4 Window.  I navigate to a folder where I keep newly scanned files -- these are TIFs.
On the laptop computer, I scan an image and it is saved to the laptop hard drive as a TIF.  Using Windows Explorer, I copy the TIF file from the laptop to the scan folder on the desktop that is open in Bridge.  Instead of seeing a thumbnail for the file in Bridge, I only see an icon that says "TIF."  I press F5 to refresh the view and nothing happens.  I double-click the TIF icon to open the file in CS4 and the image looks fine.  Still, only an icon in Bridge.
To replace the icon with the thumbnail, I can do one of three things:  close Bridge and reopen it, or purge the cache for the scan folder, or select the icon and right-click on the icon and "Purge Cache for the Selection."
Is this a bug?  Is there something else I can do so that when I add TIFs to the folder that is open in Bridge, I see the thumbnail and not the generic icon.
Thanks very much for any help here.

    Curt,
    Thank you for the reply.
If I click on another folder and then back to the scan folder, I still see the generic icon.  However, I did the test you suggested and copied some TIFs made by another program into the scan folder, and the thumbnails show up right away.  So, you are right that something about how the Nikon software saves TIFs is causing this problem.  The Nikon TIFs must have a thumbnail in them because I can view them after doing the other activities I mentioned.
I'm not a software expert, so I don't really understand how this stuff works, but at least you've helped me explain why it's happening.
    Thanks again.

  • Two Icons for Mail on desktop e

I have not clue how this happened but I now have two icons for mail, one in the dock, one on the desktop. I tired to move the one on the desktop to the trash but it will not do it. I get message that I can not put in trash because it is open. Even tho it is not open... any one know how I can get rid of the icon on the desktop?

you may have dragged and dropped the mail app icon to the dock inadvertently. quit mail and if you do not want mail to be displayed on the dock, then go to the dock and drag that mail icon to the desktop, it should then "poof" disappear, and you can continue using the icon on the desktop if that is what you want to do.
    hope this helps

  • Blank/Generic Icons for Word & RTF files - a rant

I can't understand why such a simple thing can be made so difficult. If you have .RTF and .DOC files all set to open with Pages, then they have the blank/generic icon. Ofcourse you can change the icon manually but this isn't exactly a solution as you would need to do it everytime you create a new file.
What also gets me is that if you did happen to have WORD on your machine, and you still wanted .doc files to open with pages, the icon for those files would still be blank even though there's an icon right there on your machine especially for those types of files. The only way to get a word icon for word files is to have them opening all the time with Word.
This is the same with RTF files, textedit has an icon for RTF files, but because you want to edit them in Pages you have to put up with a blank icon because there isn't an icon for RTF files inside the Pages package.
I know Mac users tend to scoff at Windows users and vica versa. But, in this instance it's laughable that such a simple thing is made almost impossible to the average user.
It's not much to ask, the ability to specify that all .doc and .rtf files have X icon.

I think the logic is that Pages doesn't ever "save" .doc or .rtf. Pages can "export to", but that's not good enough for some reason.
You cannot say: "This .rtf is a Pages rtf-file. I use Pages do open it and Pages to save it." The only thing you can say is "This .rtf will open with Pages, and then I will have to choose myself which format to save or export to."
One doesn't have to agree with that logic of course.

  • Fuzzy icons for office files opened with VM Ware

since upgrading to snow leopard, the finder file icons for the office files (.xls, .ppt, .doc, .xlsx, .pptx, etc.) are all fuzzy. I notice that if i change the file associations for these files to mac office they look right again but as long as they are associated with the version of office on the VM ware virtual machine, they remain fuzzy. This is annoying since it's so fuzzy it's hard to distinguish between ppt and xls without looking at the file extension.
does anyone know how to rebuild these icons?

  • Why having displayed both generic icons for the PDF and JPEG files and automatic preview of the JPEG files in an ordinary folder are mutually exclusive in Win7?

    In Win7 Pro all my:
PDF documents, with the 'Large Icons' option chosen in the View tab, display contents of their first page with a tiny thumbnail in the icon's lower right corner, instead of a generic PDF icon.
JPEG files show Icon size photos, instead of a generic Nero 9 PhotoSnap Essentials icon.
Folders containing the JPEG photos, however, automatically show preview, when opened, which is desirable feature.
I found that the Win7 option "Always show icons never thumbnails" in the View tab: Windows Explorer -> Tools -> Folder Options, (where ironically the present 'thumbnails' have nothing to do with 'Thumbnails' from the View option in WinXP), causes the unwanted effects described in points 1 & 2, when unchecked.
Checking this option solves the problem of the PDF and Nero icons. This time, however, I can only see a Nero 9 PhotoSnap Essentials icons, instead of photos preview on opening of any standard folder with the JPEG photos.
Did I make a mistake somewhere or maybe Microsoft made changes in Win7 with respect to WinXP, which make it impossible to have both the features working at the same time?

    Hi,
You can install the Win 8.1 software drivers using this link.
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&product=4323648&task=&
Once installed, it should have the same features as the Win 7 drivers for scanning.

  • File- open displays only generic icons for psd and raw

Following a hard drive crash, I had to reinstall Photoshop CS5.  I've updated to the latest version (12.0.1) and updated my NVIDA GEForce 8600 driver to the latest from Dell. This is on a Dell XPS 410, 4 GB memory and hundreds of gigs of hard drive space. When I use the File-->Open menu and dialog to look for images to use, while JPG and most TIF icons are thumbnail icons, the CR2, CRW, PSD and DNG icons are all generic. There is no problem in Bridge or in LightRoom. Opening the image in Photoshop doesn't seem to help.
While I obviously have options, when I just need to go looking quickly for an image I know is there, this makes it difficult to find. What can I do to get those previews back?
    Thanks in Advance

  • Replacing the generic icon for podcasts?

    Hi -
Usually iWeb displays the generic podcast icon in for the preview picture. Once in a while iWeb displays a nice image seemingly grabbed from a podcast I've posted. But that's rare.
How do I set which icon I would like to have displayed?
    Many thanks for your help.
      Mac OS X (10.4.9)

I'm wondering if I have not expressed this question well enough for an advanced user to answer it quickly or whether there is no answer and the preview podcast icon in iWeb is simply a random mystery.
Any and all help is much appreciated.
    Thank you.

  • Icons for images on desktop do not update when edited in Preview

I didn't know what topic to put this in but I guess I consider this a Finder issue.
Here's the problem: In both Leopard and Tiger, when I edit something in Preview and save it the little icon preview image on my desktop (you know, above the file name) does not change, even after I restart. I know the world isn't going to end because of it but it has gotten to the point where I'll edit things in Photoshop instead of Preview just to get the stupid icon to be accurate, otherwise I don't know if I've worked on a picture already or not. It would save me from a lot of time wasted booting up Photoshop just to crop an image.
I also noticed that the Spotlight comments (when I use "get info" on the file) still describe the picture in its larger format before cropping. It just doesn't seem to update itself. The image I am looking at as an example is a PNG right now but I'm sure it has happened with jpegs as well. (generally I'll just go into Photoshop in the end and save from there to update the icon out of frustration)
Can this be fixed? It would certainly make me enjoy using Preview a little more.
I thought this would go away with a Leopard upgrade but it doesn't seem to.

    chakramchucker wrote:
Is there a way to remove or replace the preview image manually, then?
select the files with custom icons and enter commandoptioni.
in the resulting info window select the little icon in the top left corner and press delete.

  • Generic icons for A - pplications

Anyone know which cache (or is it something else?) I have to delete or flush etc so that newly installed apps will display their own icons - and not the generic 'A' - in the Finder under 10.5.2, please?
Restarting always shows application-specific icons. As does Get Info on the errant app.
    What else could it be?
    TIA!

Could be that the Finder is just being a sluggard about redrawing the icon. It gets that way sometimes. Try simply relaunching the Finder--hold down the Option key, click and hold on the Finder icon in the Dock until the pop up menu appears, and select "Relaunch" at the bottom. All Finder windows will close, and, with any luck, the Finder will wake up and draw the correct icon.

  • Generic Icon for M2V File Droplet?

I've noticed that since upgrading to V2 of Compressor everything works fine...but that it is outputting an M2V file that has a blank page with a dogear Icon.
When I go to Get info it says "Open with Droplet"...this is a new one for me. When I select the Droplet Pull down menu and choose QuickTime it reverts to a QT file icon.
Thing is...it works fine either way when I port it into DVDSP. On the other hand...it's bugging me because clearly something has changed in this version (or I have some strange error going on). Anybody help me with understanding this droplet business?
    MS

I've also noticed this, and have changed the icons as you have.
I also just replicated a disc with these files without issue.
Don't know what to tell you.

  • How do I change the desktop Icon for an external hard drive?  I have gone to "Get Info" and tried dragging and dropping  several formats of pictures and the icon changes to the generic image of that file type.

how can I change the desktop icon for an external hard drive.  Using LaCies and Dimple hard drives.

One of the things I've found with OS X (at least with Snow Leopard, which is my first excursion into OS X), is that all too often the thumbnail displayed on a file, whether a file created or one downloaded, is a false thumbnail. That is, when you do a Get Info on the file the icon in the upper left is the generic icon for that file type, rather than the thumbnail displayed in Finder. Makes it a bit difficult to copy.
Apparently Finder uses Preview in the background to generate the displayed thumbnail without actually creating one.
What I've resorted to doing, particularly with graphic images, is to process them with GraphicConverter - I have its prefs set to automatially add thumbnails and previews. With an individual file this means opening it in GC and doing a Save As. However, a much easier and faster way is when there are two or more such files; I put them in a common folder and drop the folder onto GC. GC then opens them in a catalog view, in the process adding real thumbnails and previews to each automatically. Doesn't take long to do several hundred files that way.
