'generic' RGB setting

What is the difference between the 'generic' RGB setting in the print dialogue box when printing out of InDesign CS5?  I am having a color shift after upgrading from CS2.

Hi Jack,
The print dialog box for InDesign is pretty complex, and there might be a lot of default settings which have changed between CS2 and CS5.  You might just have to dig around to find the differences between the two, if there are any.
What is your print setup like?  Are you just printing to an RGB inkjet printer?  If it's something simple like that you could try exporting to a PDF and printing in a different application.
If you haven't already, it might be worth trying to post your question on an InDesign-specific forum.

  • MBP early 2008 display won't calibrate any profile besides generic RGB?

    I've been experiencing some issues with my early 2008 MBP when it boots so I recently reset the SMC and the PRAM. I've now noticed that my display's color is off, so I went to display settings and it was set to "generic RGB profile" and shows all of the others (Adobe RGB 1998 is what I've always used) but when I try to calibrate them it comes up with the error message "The factory profile for the display could not be found."
    Is my display going out? I don't understand this... I've already gotten the logicboard replacement through the recall a couple months ago so why would this be happening?

    Hi Fred,
    3.) I had a scenario with my MacBook about two years where the unit would not start up. It just flashed the SLI (Sleep Light Indicator) over and over again. At the time, I didn't feel comfortable with all the technician aspects of the unit and brought it into the Genius Bar for triage. After 20-30 minutes at the bar, the technician inserted a CD-R into my machine and proceeded to do "something" (couldn't see) and then turned the machine around to me as it sat at my desktop view. His response: "I restored your firmware, it was corrupted."
    No idea... what he did... but whatever it was the problem went away and never once came back even after an EFI firmware update 8-9 months after the experience.
    4.) Isolating the issue to the "Nvidia MLB" is difficult, because there are some scenarios (apparently) to how those units are screened for coverage. Again, another experience... my roommate had a 15" MacBook Pro that wouldn't start up and on power on would just boot to no video with a solid white SLI. He brought the unit into an Apple store where they run a diagnostic off an iPod. "Based on the results of the test" conducted they determined that they were going to cover the unit (even though it was out of warranty). They did indicate to him that the test was necessary to determine if the unit was eligible for repair. No idea what was performed during the testing, or if the unit had an affected Nvidia board. However the MLB was replaced and the machine has been working great for almost a year now.
    As you've probably figured out, at this point, the next best course of action is to get the unit into a service provider and have them work their magic.

    Found the problem. I forgot to parameterize the Set in the getFavouriteEvents() method.

  • Persistent "RGB setting is different" message

    I have InDesign CS2, Japanese version (much of what I write will be translations of the Japanese IU, so pardon me if it doesn't match the English wording exactly).
    A few weeks ago I followed a list of specific steps required by a printing house, and now every time I open any document, InDesign says, "This document's RGB setting is different from the application's color setting."  Strangely enough, though, what it says are the settings of the document and what it says it would change them to in order to match the application are identical.  And no matter whether I choose to update the document to match the application or not, and no matter how many times I save the document after that, the next time I open the document it still gives the same complaint.
    A screenshot of the dialog box is attached - I'll translate as best I can, but I'm hoping someone will be familiar with it in English anyway.  It's something like this:
    - What action should be taken? -
      O Don't correct the document
    Policy: Preserve
    Profile: sRGB IEC61966-2.1
      O Correct the document to match the current color setting
    Policy: Preserve
    Profile Assignment: sRGB IEC61966-2.1
    Placed Content: Preserve default assignment (other choices are "Enable all profiles" and "Disable all profiles"
    The steps I think I took at the direction of the printshop that were related to color were the following:
    Edit -> Color Setting: Set top choice to "Pre-press use - Japan2" (the instructions don't explicitly say
    Edit -> Transparency Blend Area Setting -> Use document's CMYK area
    Image -> Mode -> CMYK Color
    Make sure all my color swatches are CMYK (I already knew that)
    I suppose this problem probably has something to do with the first step, and I can't guarantee that I didn't make other changes not listed above.  Anyway, currently when I look at my Color Settings, the "Setting" is "Pre-press use - Japan2" and the "Advanced Settings Mode" checkbox is not  checked.  The "Operating Space" section lists the RGB setting as "Adobe RGB (1998)" and the CMYK setting as "Japan Color 2001 Coated".  In the "Color Management" section, RGB is "Preserve the buried profile" (I have no idea what that means - the other choices are "Off" and "Change to Operating Space"), and CMYK is "Preserve Number (Ignore Linked Profile)", and it has a lock symbol to the left of it - when I hover over the selection, the notes below say, "When the document is opened, the CMYK profile will be preserved. When CMYK contents are placed, by default the profile will be ignored, but object by object you can choose to overwrite the profile (select Object -> Image Color Setting).  By this setting, you can also make changes for proofing or document reuse by way of checking which CMYK profiles are different."  (Sorry, that last sentence lost me - Japanese is not my native language.)  All the checkboxes in the Color Management section are checked.  I'll attach a screenshot of that dialog box, too.
    I really have no idea what most of that stuff does, but although the "locked" nature of the CMYK setting sounds related to opening a document, the complaint is about RGB, not CMYK.  I do remember that a few times both a question about the RGB setting and a question about the CMYK setting came up (two dialog boxes one after the other), but in those cases the CMYK one had the same mysterious issue that the current setting and the setting it would change the document to were the same ("Japan Color 2001 Coated", if I remember right).  I haven't gotten that one lately (coincidence? solved?), but every single time I get the one about RGB.  Any idea what is going on?

    The workflow you are describing (everything is being prepared for one CMYK press condition) makes color management fairly easy.
    Unless you design for the web your RGB settings would never need to change. You would choose one RGB editing space (usually AdobeRGB), set it as your RGB Working Space in all programs and set your RGB Policy to Preserve. In that case every RGB document (or RGB object in ID) you make is assigned AdobeRGB and that RGB profile is saved with the document. If you never make or place RGB objects in ID, the RGB Working Spaces or assigned profiles never come into play.
    The only difference between a Working Space and an assigned profile is the assigned profile overrides the Working Space. If a document does not have an assign profile the application's Working Space is used instead. The mismatch dialog you are seeing indicates the assign profile of the doc you are opening doesn't match the current Working Space
    The document's CMYK profile effects how CMYK values are converted to RGB for display and how RGB values are converted to CMYK for output, so it's important that the profile you use is in fact a reasonable profile of the destination press.
    The differences can be significant. Here's how 3 different profiles display the same CMYK file. Top is Japan Standard 2, middle is US Sheetfed V2, and the bottom is a Newsprint profile:
    http://www.zenodesign.com/scripts/CMYKPreviews.png
    Some people never want conversions from one CMYK space to another. Preserve numbers prevents placed CMYK files with profiles which conflict with the ID doc's profile from being re-separated at output or export. This setting only effects placed files. When you use it as your policy new documents are still assigned the current CMYK Working Space profile, and that profile is preserved the next time you open that ID document.

  • Generic cursors and generic result sets - How to?

    Hi all,
    I'm currently developing some kind of table export util. All it should do is to take a list of table names, determine the table structure (aka fields), fetch all data from this table and store a flat textfile containing all table data as ready-to-use INSERT statements.
    Please do not tell me that I could use DataPump or imp/exp, I know this but in this specific project this is not possible. I simply need one textfile per Table, that's it.
    So far my approach is the following:
    - Developed a package which contains a hard-coded list of tables as "TABLE OF VARCHAR2".
    - One procedure inside this package determines the list of fields for every passed tablename and their corresponding fieldtypes and generates a SELECT and INSERT query.
    - Another procedure will get the created SELECT query (which is valid, I've tested this) and performs a "OPEN <generic_cursor> FOR <select_query>";
    And here is also my problem. After "OPEN" the generic cursor I need a record to fetch the data row into. However as the list of tables is dynamic, so must be the records where to fetch into. I did not find any possible way of dynamically creating a record for the "FETCH INTO" statement. So far the only solution I've found was to hardcode the results of the tables and use IF/ELSE or CASE logic inside the data retrival procedure to fetch always into the right record:
    PROCEDURE DUMP_TABLES(P_TABLENAME VARCHAR2, P_SELECT VARCHAR2)
    G_CV genericcurtyp;
    T_MC_USERS MC_USERS%ROWTYPE;
    T_CDALBUM CDALBUM%ROWTYPE;
    BEGIN
    OPEN G_CV FOR P_SELECT;
    LOOP
    IF P_TABLENAME = 'MC_USERS' THEN
    FETCH G_CV INTO T_MC_USERS;
    ELSE
    FETCH G_CV INTO T_CDALBUM;
    END IF;
    EXIT WHEN G_CV%NOTFOUND;
    END LOOP;
    END;
    What I really would like to use is something like this:
    PROCEDURE DUMP_TABLES(P_TABLENAME VARCHAR2, P_SELECT VARCHAR2)
    G_CV genericcurtyp;
    TYPNAME VARCHAR2(32):='T_'||P_TABLENAME;
    MYRES TYPNAME%ROWTYPE;
    BEGIN
    OPEN G_CV FOR P_SELECT;
    LOOP
    FETCH G_CV INTO MYRES;
    EXIT WHEN G_CV%NOTFOUND;
    -- Do something with the row data in MYRES
    END LOOP;
    CLOSE G_CV;
    END;
    Of course I could hard-code everything, however I would like to keep the possibility to extend the list of tables simply by adding another entry to my list of tablenames without having to add additional code whenever the table list changes.
    I've tried also the "FOR i IN (<SELECT>)", however this won't accept a variable for the <SELECT>.
    Maybe someone here as an idea how to solve this problem without having to hard-code the required result sets of all affected tables? Or maybe I'm simply going the wrong way and someone could show me the right one?
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Best regards,
    Sascha

    You could use DBMS_SQL instead. DBMS_SQL provides DESCRIBE procedure so you can get count and datatypes of select list elements. If you are on 11g you can convert ref cursor to DBMS_SQL cursor or vice versa. But I would use a different solution. First of all, what are you creating "export" for? If you are planning to use it to load data into another Oracle database I'd simply use external tables. If you really need CSV, I'd use DBMS_SCHEDULER and run SQL*Plus task spooling output to a file.

  • Final Cut Pro RGB Colorsync Profile ???

    What color profile should I tag RGB media for import into Final Cut Pro. I would like to start with the color that the artist or designer intended and then color treat each piece for the program. With photographs from a current project the supplier's scanner/camera color profile threw gamma and color tones and hues out-of-wack. I've read about DVDSP 2 having a color issue if your computer monitor isn't set to the Generic RGB setting. I would love to know how FCP handles color profiles. Should I convert the profile to my monitor. If I move to another room with a different monitor and render there, will I need to convert the images and other RGB media to that station's monitor profile? Does FCP use the Generic RGB profile similarly to DVDSP 2?

    Nick,
    One thing you might try is to get what the fabric people call a "swatch" from the artist and use it to match all the colors he/she gives to you.
    In this case it would be a set of colors with their numerical values representing all or most of the major colors in the art work you have been given. The artist will be providing the precise color formulas even though your monitor may not be translating them exactly as both of you are seeing them.
    Obviously with the three way color picker in FCP you will have to make some compromises on vague shadows and such, but you should be able to get close to the artist's preferred hues.
    You don't have trust or believe your eye or the monitor, just let FCP reproduce the colors as the eye dropper translates them to numbers. This way her version of purple will be be easier for you to match.

  • RGB color in inDesign changes (washed out) after exporting it to PDF

    Hi,
    I am new to InDesign and i have a hard time figuring out how could I export my InDesign file to PDF without affecting the color.
    This is what I do.
    1. I created a new document with Transparency Blend Space set to Document RGB
    2. I created a box using the rectangle tool and filled it up with RGB color, R=126 G=12 B=110
    3. The color in Indesign is just how i wanted it, however, the problem arises when i export the file now to PDF
    4. Instead of the color i wanted, the color was changed to a lighter color, or washed out.
    5. THis happens even in text have the same RGB setting.
    How could I export it to PDF with the same color, without being washed out?
    I really appreciate your help on this. Thanks.

    That sounds like the Color Picker, which works a bit differently in ID than in Illustrator or Photoshop. If the cursor is not in one of the RGB fields when you say OK you won't get RGB color. You can see this by noting the text in the Add ... Swatch button. My guess is you added the color as the CMYK conversion which is a bit lighter.
    You might want to use the panel menu in the Swatches panel instead, or the new swatch button at the bottom of the panel while holding down the Alt key to open the new swatch definition dialog. You want to create a Process color and change the type to RGB, then enter the values in the RGB fields. Or if what you want is really Pantone 249U you can define a Spot swatch and choose Pantone Solid Uncoated and then specify the 249. I'll warn you though, that CS6 uses Lab values for displaying spot colors and 249U is considerably lighter than either the RGB you specified or the 249C. In earlier versions the book value conversions were used. Even when using Lab display values through Ink Manager in CS5, the coated and uncoated swatches incorrectly look the same in ID, and in Illustrator CS5 you would need to turn on overprint preview to see a difference.
    Here are a couple of screen captures from PDFs exported from ID CS5 and CS6 using High Quality Print. The colored boxes with the lables were pasted from Illustrator CS5 to be sure I was using the same color definitions and that theywere behaving as native objects. Below are the same boxes placed:
    and here is how the screen looked in CS6 in ID (notice the difference in the placed .ai file -- the screen preview is NOT using the Lab values, although it exports with them):
    I don't know what the content is and how you present it, but it doesn't sound like a web page. That said, if you choose Web for intent in Document Setup you can still use print size paper sizes for the document and change the rulers after the doc is created to read inches or millimeters or other units of your choice instead of pixels and the file will use default RGB swatches and default to RGB when making new colors.

  • Problem "Link to a document" content type within document set - Bug?

    Hello,
    I'm having an issue with the "Link to a document" content type in one of my document libraries. The issue is when you create a link to a document inside a document set:
    The result is that the users get redirected to the wrong URL (../docsethomepage.aspx instead of ../docsethomepage.aspx?ID=.......), and instead of seeing the actual document set they started from, with the new link (or any document that is already in the
    document set) the users see a default view of a generic document set - not the one they started from:
    Any suggestions on how to fix this? One library has this faults and one does not. Our SharePoint server is up-to-date.

    Hi,
    I reproduced the issue in different versions of SharePoint, it works in SharePoint Server 2013, and the issue occured to Office 365. I then tried enabling “Launch forms in a dialog”, it worked.
    I will forward the issue to our internal feedback channel. And since the issue occurs to Office 365, please create service request with online engineer for root cause.

  • Indesign RGB color problems and JPEG export

    How do I get a bright red or bright lime green RGB jpeg to show properly on an InDesign page? I click on New Color Swatch, Color Mode: Web and select a web safe color, yet when I draw it on the page, the colors are incredibly dark and less saturated, like it's converting to CMYK colors.
    Also, when exporting to jpeg the colors are still dark and less saturated, yet if I copy and paste each page from InDesign into Photoshop, the colors are bright and saturated as intended. Doing this for each page is out of the question for my project, since I need to convert 130 similar pages into Web-bright jpegs. The export to jpeg doesn't seem to work in my favor either. So what gives?
    I tried changing color profiles, too, RGB set to sRGB and Adobe RGB 1998. CMYK set to SWOP No luck. Help!

    Please post this question under its own topic with a subject line that
    actually relates to the question. Include details, like how you're
    converting TIF to JPG, *why* you're converting TIF to JPG (TIFFs work
    just fine in Word and Powerpoint), and how any of this relates to

  • Generic Resources - Best Practice

    Hi, I have been looking at various articles recently and I have come across 4 different suggested methods for using Generic Resources and in particular the Max Units set for each generic resources. Some of these methods appear to be at odds with each other
    so I would be interested in any advice about which one is the best or if more than one method could be used what are the differing scenarios where they apply.
    Example is I have 8 real Business Analysts (BAs) and I want a Generic resource to help review demand on that type of resource...
    Method 1 -  Set BA1, BA2, BA3 up etc ie have 8 x generic resources.  Quite frankly this appears to be a ridiculous method and seems to contradict the whole point of having generic resources ie a single resource.
    Method 2 -  Single Generic Resource and set Max units at 800% - Good for reviewing demand on the generic resource but I cant see how that proposed demand can be reviewed alongside the real Business Analysts in Resource Capacity view as it will show
    a capacity of eg 1600% which clearly is misleading.
    Method 3 - As Method 2 - but set Max Units to 100% - I cant remember the rationale for this approach but it was something to do with avoiding assigning 800% effort and the overallocation it would create when replaced with a real resource who only has 100%
    Max Units.
    Method 4 - As Method 2 but set the Max Units to 0% - I definatley cant remember the rationale for this approach but it was a recommendation!
    So can someone guide me here?  Requirement:- I need to know how much of my generic resource has been demanded but also how much of the associated real world resource is left?
    Thanks in advance.
    Steve

    There are a number of system behaviors you need to consider:
    Generic Resources create both capacity and demand
    Generic Team resources create demand only
    When used in Portfolio Analysis, Generic resources create demand only
    The system uses all resources in the system when calculating FTEs based on the resource pool rather than a fixed hour amount.
    People like to set their regular Generic resources to 0% so that they do not contribute to capacity calculations in the system, so that they do not need to remember to filter them out. The consequence is that this distorts the system calculated FTE.
    If you have no need for the system calculated FTE, such as for Portfolio analysis, this approach won't harm you.
    FTE calculation distortion is the least of the consequences of using numbers above 100% for Generic resource max units. You need to be a mathematical genius to make assignments as when you assign 100% of a Generic resource set to 800% max units,
    you get 8 times what you expect for the work value. That's 100% percent of 800%.
    Conclusion: Using 0% has consequences you might be able to ignore. Modeling single Generic resources to represent multiple resources renders them unusable for demand, and valid for modeling capacity only. There are few use cases anyone can imagine for this.
    The absolute best practice, therefore, is to use 100% for your Generic resources max units.

  • Does anynody know if it is possible to merge 2 data sets ?

    hello,

    It is possible, though you currently have to write code to do

    make this much easier. In the mean time, here's an example of how
    you can do it. Hopefully this code doesn't get munged by the forum

  • Hi, I am trying to print to an HP4050n via a secure wireless network.  It prints but the default page setting sent to the printer is JIS B5.  I have to hit the "Go" to get the printer to print.  I have the correct setting in my Printer Settings (Letter).

    I am attempting to print via a wireless (secure) network to an HP4050n printer.  The document prints AFTER I choose "GO" on the printer.  It is waiting as it wants me to load the JIS B5 paper/tray.  I have the printer defined as Letter but in spite of that, it is requesting a different setting.  I am thinking that because I am using the Generic PCL setting (I also tried the HP 4/5 PCL ) it is not communicating correctly.  It does print once I get up and hit the GO button.
    Any ideas?  Thanks.

    The paper size would normally be coming from the application rather than some setting in the driver. I've never seen the Generic PCL driver send a request for B5, but then I do use A4 rather than Letter and I don't have a PCL printer at home to check this. But I do think it has more to do with the application/document being printed.
    For the application that you are using, is there are a separate Page Setup menu?
    If the page and document is correctly set to Letter, you mention a wireless secure. If you mean something more than a wireless network that requires a password to access it, such as using https to connect to a remote server, then it could be settings for the shared printer queue. Although these shared printers are usually just an access point (throughport) for the remote client. Still, if you do have some additional network server for this secure wireless network, then this could be contributing to the incorrect paper size call.
