Generic USB hub doesn't allow iMac to recognize external harddrive and iPhone.

I have an iMac (few years old) and placed a generic USB hub on one of the ports. My iMac doesn't recognize my external harddrive or iPhone cradle, unless I connect them directly to the back of the iMac. Are there hubs that work better?

Any of these hubs should work.

  • Need help on USB hub for mac air 13 inch (2 external hardisk and Iphone)

Hello everyone, I am a new macbook air user, and currently using 2 external hardisk of 1TB and 2TB. I am looking for usb hub that support both of my external hardisk, ethernet and iphone too. The problem is, limited usb hub for mac air and bad review on balkin product, any advice for me?
One more thing, I just moved from window to mac for the first time, and bought Western Digital 2TB external hardisk, the problem is, I can't save any video/audio file that I downloaded from internet in macbook to be transfer/move to this WD 2TB external hardisk, except for back up and time machine. It refuse to except any file that I try to move in to the external hardisk Can anyone help me? compactibility problem?

First, I have not found any of my hubs to have an issue with my MBA. Just make sure that if any peripherals you attached to the hub are adequately powered. Either by having the hub independently powered, or the devices having their own power supply.
The drive problem you have may be due to the file formatting. If this drive is formatted NTFS, then in many cases you can write to it using a network protocol, but OS X can't write to it if attached directly to the computer, e.g. USB, SATA, FireWire. You will neeed to either format the drive as a HFS+ drive, or use software that enables OS X to write directly to t a NTFS formatted drive, such as NTFS-3G. DISCLAIMER: As the information you provide for your circumstances is limited, this is but one suggestion amongst many, that explain your situation.

  • Looking for a good usb hub that will allow my mouse and external hard to work together

I'm looking for some ideas for a good usb hub that will allow me to use a wireless mouse and an external hard drive at the same time, without shorting out the mouse.  The one i currently have, when I plug in just the mouse, it's fine, but as soon as i put the external hard drive into the hub port, the mouse no longer works and i have to reinstall the drivers for the mouse.

Hubs and computers vary in their power needs, but it seems that your setup is lacking in the power department. This isn't a big deal with desktop computers, but since you use a MBP, you're going to do best with a powered USB hub.
If you're looking for a USB hub with power supply, Belkin is generally reliable (and above average in price). But the D-Link is compact, reliable, and has a good price. Aim for a USB 3.0 hub if possible, though 2.0 will work fine with just about anything. Insist on a refund if the hub doesn't work in your system. Make sure it's compact, since you'll be carrrying it around.

  • Generic USB hub missing which causes Moble broadband, bluetooth, camera... not working

I've found myself in a bit of a problem.
My W510 no longer have any devices for the fingerprint reader, bluetooth, mobile broadband, integrated camera (and possibly some more).
When comparing the devices in "Device Manager" to another W510, I notice that many of the missing devices are USB devices, but also that the other machine have two "Generic USB hub" and I have two "Unknown device".
When I compare the two hubs and the two unknown devices, they have the same "Location" (i.e. Port_#0001.Hub_#0001 and Port_#0001.Hub_#0002) and I guess that the missing devices (bluetooth...) are "connected" to thoose Generic USB hubs.
If I delete (uninstall) the "Unknown device" from Device Manager and reboot, I can see that Windows detects my mobile broadband device, but during the driver installation they get "device unplugged" when the driver installation for the "Unknown devices" finish.
I've tried to update the driver, but I can't find any driver for "Generic USB hub"
Anyone have a solution to this problem? I really don't want to reinstall Windows, but I might have to do it unless I find a solution to this problem...

Found the cause of the "Generic USB hub" problem in C:\Windows\INF\setupapi.dev.log.
In that file it's clear that the problem stems from the fact that usb.inf is missing...
Now I've got to figure out how to get a working usb.inf without reinstalling the whole OS

  • 2504 Mini-Dock shows Generic USB Hub on T400 with XP. Drivers required.

    Hi all,
When  you hook this Mini-Dock up to a T400, you see a Generic USB Hub pop-up in the USB section of Device Manager on XP SP2 and the Factory Preload.
There should be drivers for this somewhere but I dont see them even on the factory preload which was done sitting on one of these docks.
    The PCI string is: USB\VID_04B3&PID_4485\5&36CF88F1&0&5
There are some compaints about USB devices being hooked up to these docks and not working properly and I am pretty sure that installing the proper drivers would probably fix this issue.
    Thanks in advance.

    Excellent, thank you!

  • Twin unpowered USB hub for connecting external HDD and iphone

I have a MBA and a powered Kensington 7 port USB hub which works great when I am either at home/in the office.
Is there an unpowered twin port USB hub that would allow me to connect both my WD myv passport 320gb external HDD and 3g iphone to my MBA when i am truly on the move?
    thanks in advance

Because those are both drawing power from the macbook air, it might be questionable, but any should do, but I haven't seen any 2 port hubs, only four port ones, and I tend to like Logiix, as their support is good and their products are good also, and they are fairly low profile.

When I've had a similar problem, it was because I was accessing the iTunes store from a device I hadn't used before, such as when I upgraded from an iPad 1 to the iPad 2.  It was a little confusing to me until I figured it out.
All I had to do was use the ID of my existing account and play along with the iTunes store.  As I recall, it asked for my password twice, and the security code from the back of my credit card.  After that, downloads proceeded as before.

  • ITunes doesn't allow me to put music in my iPhone 5

Hi. I have realized, that my iTunes doesn't introduce the music I select into my iPhone5. Kind of weird. If I choose just a few songs (5,10) they go in. But if I select a vast amount of them (400+) they just stay with this sign and sometimes with grey color or sometimes and unselectable, or also sometimes just with this sing but selectable. (With selectable I mean I can use it and play it)
I have tried everything. First I thought it was a mess with the enough space, but it isn't. I restart counters but doesn't work. I've updated iTunes, and iPhone (7.1.1) but neither is.
    Help me please

Hi. I wonder what do you mean when you say "home button"?
What I understood is that you think i have a Mac computer? I have Windows 7
Or correct me if i'm wrong of course!
    And anyway thank you!

  • My MacBook Air keeps asking me for my yahoo password; which when correctly entered will not allow me into the account. iPad and iPhone both working on the same password/account.

my MacBook Air keeps asking me for my YAHOO password; which when correctly entered will not allow me into the account. iPad and iPhone both working on the same password.

I've got automatic downloads turned off and I tried signing out and in via the settings and still keeps asking me for an apple id.
It doesn't do it continuously, it'll just pop up randomly ... if the phone is just sitting there it may ask for my apple id and regardless of whether I press cancel or enter my password nothing happens .. it may be another 2mins, 5mins, 15mins but eventually it'll just randomly pop up and ask me again. It does accept my password though because I tried entering an incorrect password to see what happens and it gives me the error saying it's incorrect, so when I enter the correct one in the box disappears and it accepts it as I say, but only for so long before it pops up again.

  • How do I get my photos on my iMac sent to my iPad and iPhone? Nothing seems to work.

How do I get my photos on my iMac sent to my iPad and iPhone? Nothing seems to work. hurtalert

Is your iMac the computer you normally sync your iPad to?
If so put your photos into albums in iphoto on your imac. Then start iTunes on your iMac and connect your iPad to your iMac. In iTunes on your iMac select your iPad in the left column and selectPhotos in the right column. Scroll down and select the photo albums you want on your iPad. Then select Apply in the lower right corner of iTunes. This will load the sleuthed photo albums onto your iPad. Do the same for iPhone.

  • Connecting USB Hub doesn't connect some devices (randomly)

I have quite a few USB devices (normally 5: external Apple Modem, mouse, ext. Apple keyboard, 2 printers), which I plug into a USB 2 hub (externally powered D-Link DUB-H7). When I bring my MBP back to my desk, I plug the hub into one of the ports on my MBP.
In theory, this should connect all of my devices. In practice, it connects only some of them, and which ones it connects seems to be completely random. Sometimes just two, sometimes all of them. Sometimes the keyboard and not the mouse, sometimes vice-versa, and sometimes neither (both plug directly into the hub - I'm not using the keyboard hub).
If I unplug and re-plug the main cable - I get another set of devices. If I unplug the cable to an unrecognized device and re-plug, it is then recognized.
As you might imagine, this is a PITA.
    I have tried:
    - running USB Prober, including logging. This confirms that the non-working devices aren't recognized by the system at all, until I re-plug. The logging doesn't tell me anything that I can make use of.
    - installed the debugging USB kext (http://developer.apple.com/hardwaredrivers/download/usbdebug.html). This makes the USB Prober log give more information, but still doesn't tell me anything that helps. If this causes writing to some other log, I can't find it.
    - replaced the hub with an identical, brand new hub. No difference.
    - replaced the main USB cable with another USB 2 certified cable. No difference.
Looked at the console and system logs. There are some USB-related errors, but nothing unusual happens at the point of connecting the hub. There are msgs from USB Prober, but I get these even when (successfully) unplugging and re-plugging a single device. E.g.

So, any ideas on what this problem is, or how to track it down? The behavior is as if there are two many device-connection events happening in too short a time, and some of them are getting dropped. If so, could be an OS problem. But, that seems pretty basic.
I'd be glad to provide more detailed logs, if someone can specify what to log.

Hi all (esp. Carolyn). I bought a new hub (BelkinUSB 2.0 7-Port Economy Hub http://www.buy.com/prod/belkin-usb-2-0-7-port-economy-hub/q/loc/101/202378584.ht ml ), and my problems are gone.
I did more searching (I had done a lot already), and found a single comment on newegg by someone having similar and worse problems - same D-Link hub, and also on a Mac, though the 2 other Mac users had no complaints.
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductReview.aspx?Item=N82E16817111402&SortField= 0&SummaryType=0&Pagesize=100&SelectedRating=-1&=0&=100&Page=
Some other users of this hub had problems also, on PC's as well, though most had none.
Unfortunately, now I'm stuck w/2 junk hubs (warranty has expired). At least my problems are gone!

  • USB hub weirdness both after upgrade to 10.5.2 and again after iTunes crash

I have a powered 7-port combined hi and low speed USB 2.0 hub from Trust, with all kinds of things attached. I plug it into to my MacBook (late 2007) whenever it's on my desk.
Attached are a copyright protection device from Steinberg, a mouse, a printer, a harddrive, and iPod nano and an audio interface.
To my own surprise, all this has worked very nicely for months. Even recording audio went pretty well, although sometimes I had to plug in the audio interface directly to avoid latency. Timemachine worked flawlessly, doing it's job every time as soon as I plugged in the USB cable.
But not after I updated Leopard from 10.5.1 to 10.5.2.
The first thing that happened was my harddrive not being visible anymore, unless I plugged it in directly. I thought this was done on Apple's purpose, in order to create no false sense of reliability, and paid no extra attention to it.
But two days ago, after giving a second sync command in iTunes while the iPod was already syncing, iTunes got stuck.
Since then, I get the message that the iPod works better if I plug it into a Hi-Speed USB interface. Which it indeed does if I plug it directly into my MacBook.
Now, however I configure everything, start things up, power and unpower things, a look on my system profile reveals that Mac OS thinks that the hub is low-speed only.
Strangely, this is also true for my wife's MacBook, which runs Tiger, while my PC at work, which runs Windows XP, still sees it as a high speed device.
Another maybe even stranger thing is that now, my external harddrive is being recognized again by Leopard 10.5.2.
    So these are the implications:
Looking at it's behavior with Windows XP, it appears that the hub can still be recognized as a high speed device. This suggests that it's not broken.
Then, looking at it's current behavior with my wife's Tiger MacBook, it must never have worked in high speed under Tiger, either
Also, both it's high speed and device recognition capabilities have changed between Mac OS X 10.5.1 and 10.5.2
Also, a bug in iTunes or iPod has change that again.
Can anyone confirm any of these implications, or tell what's going on and what I should do?

    Hi Drgeert-
The hub may not be broken per se, but Apple has made adjustments to the limits on current that can be drawn from ports.
You probably need a new hub.
