Is there an advantage to opening an adjustment layer to do a levels adjustment VS just opening a background copy layer and doing a levels adjustment there?

Very much so -- by having the levels adjustment on its own layer, if you save the image as a PSD file, you can return at any time and modify the levels adjustment. Being on its own layer with the automatically generated layer mask, you can also paint on the layer mask to limit the effect to specific areas of the image. You can also create many levels adjustment layers, masking them appropriately to apply unique levels adjustments to different parts of the image.
Of course, if you're doing a one-off "quickie", then it doesn't matter which method you use.

Poor Performance when using Question Pooling

I'm wondering if anyone else out there is experiencing
Captivate running very slow when using question pooling. We have
about 195 questions with some using screenshots in jpeg format.
By viewing the Windows Task Manager, CP is using anywhere
between 130 to 160 K worth of memory. What is going on here? It's
hammering the system pretty hard. It takes a large effort just to
reposition the screenshot or even move a distractor.
I'm running this on a 3.20GHz machine with 3GB of RAM.
Any Captivate Gurus out there care to tackle this one?

I have noticed the same problem. I only have 60 slides with
43 questions and the Question Pool appears to be a big drain on
performance. Changing the buttons from Continue to Go to next slide
helped a little, but performance still drags compared to not using
a question pool. I even tried reducing the number of question
pools, but that did not affect the performance any. The search
continues.

Workflow and General Use Questions

Hello,
I'll apologize right off the bat for these novice question because I'm sure the information is probably somewhere in the forum, I just haven't been able to find it. I just purchased Aperture after completing the demo as my library is getting too large to manage using standard file folders. I'm now trying to figure out the best practices for workflow and general use before I invest some serious time into importing and keywording all my pictures.
1) Store files in the there current location, or in the Aperture Library? It seems to me that once they are moved to the Aperture library, you can only access them from within Aperture. I'm thinking I would be better off leaving them in their current location. For one, if I want to quickly grab a picture as an attachment to an email or something it seems easier to grab it from the standard folders. Second (and more important) I do not have room to keep all my pictures on my Macbook, thus most of them are stored on the Time Capsule.
So... Keeping photos in their current location appears to be the best choice for me even though it adds an additional step every time I bring in new photos from my camera. Does this sound right?
2) Is there a way to mark the photos that I have uploaded to my website (Smugmug)? Ideally, I would like to badge photos that have already been uploaded so I can quickly recognize them and ensure I'm not duplicating. I've considered using the rating, or keywords to indicate that a photo has been uploaded but both methods have disadvantages.
3) Any suggestions for general workflow and organization resources (tutorials, books, websites, etc.)? I've looked at the videos on Apple's site but they obviously didn't get that detailed.

I recommend to Manage by Reference with Master image files stored on external hard drives (note that Aperture defaults to a Managed-Library configuration rather than a Referenced-Masters Library). Especially important for iMacs and laptops with a single internal drive. The workflow as described below in an earlier post of mine uses a Referenced-Masters Library.
I feel pretty strongly that card-to-Aperture or camera-to-Aperture handling of original images puts originals at unnecessary risk. I suggest this workflow, first using the Finder (not Aperture) to copy images from CF card to computer hard drive:
• Remove the memory card from the camera and insert it into a memory card reader. Faster readers and faster cards are preferable.
• Finder-copy images from memory card to a labeled folder on the intended permanent Masters location hard drive.
• Eject memory card.
• Burn backup hard drive or DVD copies of the original images (optional strongly recommended recommended backup step).
• Eject backup hard drive(s) or DVDs.
• From within Aperture, import images from the hard drive folder into Aperture selecting "Store files in their current location." This is called "referenced images." During import is the best time to also add keywords, but that is another discussion.
• Review pix for completeness (e.g. a 500-pic shoot has 500 valid images showing in Aperture).
• Reformat memory card in camera, and archive originals off site on hard drives and/or on DVDs.
Note that the "eject" steps above are important in order to avoid mistakenly working on removable media/backups.
Also note with a Referenced-Masters Library that use of the "Vault" backup routine backs up the Library only, not the Masters. Masters should be separately backed up, IMO a good thing from a workflow and data security standpoint.
Max out RAM in your MB and keep the internal drive less than 70% full.

Quiz slide not advance when using question pools and advance answer options?

Hi,
I am using CP 5.5. I created a small test where I have just 2 question in a question pool. The questions are using the advanced answer options to show some specific feedback. When I insert the questions in to the project using a random question slide, after the user answers where you should be able to press Y or click to move on, I click, but nothing happens. You can't get off the quiz slide. The quiz slides work fine when they are inserted in the project as reqular quiz slides, but not when they are being pulled from a question pool.
Is this a known bug? Is there a workaround? Anyone else run in to this?

I was having the same problem on the last Random Question slide (total 10 RQ slides), and was able to fix it by following the next steps:
Make sure Quiz: Pass or Fail actions are set to Continue for both Passing and Failing actions in the quiz preferences.
Delete the RQ slide not advancing, then duplicate one of the RQ slides working, and assign your question pool to the new slide if different from the original duplicate. This step will make sure you are using a good working RQ slide.
For some reason, my last RQ slide was corrupted and wasn't advancing to the Score slide at the end of the quiz.
I can finally finish this project.

Assign points to quiz slides using Question Pools Manager

Is it possible to assign the points to be reported for a slide when using the Question Pools Manager?
If one slide, for example, has 10 points, and another slide has 5 points, when they are both added to a question pool, do their loose their original number of points and get assigned whatever number of points chosen when a random slide is added to the pool?

I just checked in Captivate 5 and it looks like the scoring is associated with the Question Pool slide, not the Question slide that gets randomly inserted.
If you're trying to achieve a result where the difficulty of the question matched the number of points awarded for getting it right, you might need to set up a number of question pools. E.g. one pool for easy questions, another for medium difficulty, and a third for really difficult ones. Assign 1 or 2 points as the default for the easy ones, maybe 5 for medium, and 10 points for hard ones.

Photoshop Elements 8 Commercial Use Questions

I am planning to record a youtube video of me doing a "speedpaint" video as they're called by many on the internet where I will paint something using Photoshop Elements 8 and am wondering if it's ok to show Photoshop's User Interface in the video... And also if it's ok for me to "monetize" the speedpaint video of me painting with youtube's ad revenue service, the focus is on me painting the video, so i am wondering what the official word on this is. I would also like to know if Photoshop Elements 8 can be used for commercial purposes, for instance if I create a painting or any kind of jpeg using Photoshop Elements 8, will I be able to benefit commercially off of my artwork by selling the digital artwork? I am confused now because of something I read. Any help would be much appreciated!

What you're planning probably won't incur the wrath of Adobe but you won't know that until they decide to issue you with a cease-and-desist letter. I doubt that they will.
I've seen projects such as yours done countless times without incident. Doesn't make it OK and does not mean that Adobe condones it or gives any kind of permission to do so.
What is certain though is that you are definitely permitted to use Adobe software for commercial purposes ie. make money off it. Even students can do that with the Educational version.

JMS - Use question

Hey Folks,
Just reading a book on JMS for the first time and i just have a few philosophical questions on the use of it. In the book it gives me an example of setting up a JMS queue and then using a MDB to receive a message and then does a credit check on a customer!!
So after one has gone through all the hassle of configuring your factories,setting up your queue, creating your MDB and then configuring it your are finally ready to write code to do your business requirements!!
Now my first thought were, why would i do all that work just to do a credit check on a customer asynchronously, if i was using plain old POJO�s , why wouldnt i just spin off a thread to do this for me in the backround instead of having to do all the above?? So what am i missing here??
Next point that i need some clarity on is more related to a production setup. Say i have 10 nodes, does one just create one JMS channel that all 10 nodes use or do they each have a channel for every node?? If they have a channel for every node then why would i use JMS?? Ok loose coupling, great but i can get that if i create my own observer pattern, what extra will it give me than a normal observer pattern?? I assume in the above scenario that you have no external applications listening, so everything that needs to listen for the message is in your JVM!! I understand if you have SAP or any other external applications listening
Last but not least, is it fair to make a comparison JMS to tibco messaging bus?? If so why, if not why?? ;)

We've written a custom Process Manager that receives messages and uses XPath and XSL to coordinate several JMS applications (all of our messages are XML). We typically don't use topics because we don't want multiple applications getting the same message. Each application does its work in turn, not at the same time.

I wouldn't want to design a large system with multiple teams working on multiple applications, each with its own processing needs without JMS. Tuning is pretty easy. Adding more horsepower at any point in the chain is pretty easy.
But it may be that I just reach for the tools that I am most familiar with.

Hello all -- Well, I've got my new battery for my Powerbook G4 1.67 now after going through a second one in less than 8 months. So my question is this:
- Does it make sense to remove the battery when I am able to plug in the A/C adapter to the wall? This way, I don't run up the Cycle count and reduce the battery life when not necessary?
- Does the computer slow down if the battery is removed but plugged into A/C power?

When the PB is plugged into the wall, you are not running up your cycle count, unless it's recharging, which it would need to do in any event. If you haven't already, you might read these two Apple notes, the first on what constitutes a cycle: http://www.apple.com/batteries/ and this note on Powerbook battery maintenance: http://www.apple.com/batteries/notebooks.html . Note that lithium batteries need to be used, to maximize their life.
Your system speed doesn't change with or without the battery when plugged into the wall.

Business Account University Office Use Questions

I work within a professional school which part of a large university. We are interested in puchasing a premium/business account to use for students who are enrolled in our online programs/potential students.
Question: Would it possible to purchase said account and use it for external student groups for example: student leadership meetings and other meetings with outside groups (informational meetings). Would those outsiders need premium accounts?
Scenario: We hold an informational meeting to illustrate our undergrad/grad programs. Could students (several) Skype in from home with a free account or would they need a premium account?
Is there any way I can ask this question directly to Skype? Seeking these answer has proven difficult.

LocalConnection Advanced use question

Does anybody know if it is actually possible to have two
flash movies talk to each other when one is in an iframe at a
different domain and one is in the page containing the iframe?
I spent quite a bit of time yesterday going through varoius
permutaions on naming the connections. The closest I got to
anythign was when I got my sender movie in Flash to successfully
talk to the reciever movie in the browser, that was accomplished
having an underscore in front fo the connection name in sender and
reciever. But when the reciever swf is in a page containing an
iframe with the sender swf nothing appears to happen.
Since I got flash player (and an executable version of the
sender) to commicate with the browser based reciever I figure this
should be possible. But i can't seem to figure out what I'm missing
in the browser based versions.
The intent of this exercise is to allow technology I am
helping to delop to be included in a page using an iframe while
providing feedback to listener movie in the site the iframe is
embedded in. From there we would provide an api for interacting
with the listener movie so that sites wishing to embed our
technology could handle certain events. I realize of course that
interframe communication between frames at different domains is a
violation of the same domain rule at the heart of most browser
security. So, I wouldn't be surprised if it isn't possible. And
yet, I could communicate between flash player and the listener so I
still wonder at the possibility.
Does anybody know if what I'm attempting is even possible?
And if so, any clues as to what may be the problem? If anybody
chooses to help with the problem or innovate a work around I would
be happy to share the source files I've been playing with, which
are simple bare bones swfs.

What about sending an arbitrary id as one of the parameters
with your
message? All movies listen, but when a message comes, each
movie checks to
see if the id param matches a correlating id of its own. This
could be a
variable stored in the root of each listening movie. (Am I
movie "A"? Yes?

The problem with the arbitrary id is that I have to send it
somewhere, and I need to know the name of the connection to send it
to, but each connection name must be unique. That is why if you
open a new window messaging goes to the first window, the
connection command in the second window will fail because the name
will aready be taken in window one. And the other movies won't know
that and will all send to the named connection which is still in
window one.
The connect function will fail if a connection already
exist.s So, on the one hand all I have to have is a loop that keeps
trying to connect until it finds a free connection. The problem I
am thinking about is having two movies in the same window, one in
the page displayed, and one in an iframe, as I set up on that demo
page. I'll want the one in the iframe to communicate with the one
in the outer page for validation purposes. If all there is is one
window then that's fine. But if sombody were to hit Ctrl+N in IE
they would get a new browser window with the same page. The problem
is how to make it so that the two movies in each window know to
only communicate with each other in only that window?
My thought is that I can use the incremental connection id
technique in each movie and figure that if the increment is
firstMovie_2 in one movie then it should communicate with
otherMovie_2. What I'm worried about in this scenario though is
what happens if the user is caffienated and hits Ctrl+N five times?
Will the two movies increment correctly for each browser window? Or
will there end up a couple windows with a firstMovie_3 and
secondMovie_2 because things didn't load in a controlled sort of
way?
I think the incremental technique would be fine for if a
window closed because that would free the connection id and the
loop would always start at 0, so if you had five windows opened and
closed the first one and opened a new one, the new window would use
the ids with the _0 increment.
Anyway, its helping me to write this stuff out. I'm going to
implement the incremental id thing and I'll report my findings.

J2Exe use question

Hi,
I'm trying to use this program so that I can have exe files created for a program I want to be using on multiple machines and don't want to deal with classpath variables etc.
I found this program (http://www.geocities.com/j2exe/) and am having a problem using it. I'm just not quite sure about the whole "Working Directory" field that I must specify. I was trying to put some stuff in there but the program would then crash.
What am I supposed to put in that field?...I guess I just don't understand that aspect of creating EXE files and working directories...

Netflix international use question

Hello, I am considering the WD TV Live Streaming and have a question about Netflix use internationally. I live in Trinidad and Tobago and Netflix is avaiable here. I currently use it on my PS3 with no issue. Will this also work with the Live Streaming without issue? - rmjb-

Use question pool with multi-part questions?

Is it possible to use the question pool in Captivate 5 for a quiz with multi-part questions? I'd like to have a question selected from a pool, but after the learner answers the first part, they get a second question that is based on the first part.
They get a question: "Is this heart sound dangerous or safe?" Then, after answering that, they'd get the question "What is the diagnosis?" for the same sound. The first question comes from a specified pool, but the second question is based on the first question. Then, they'd go on to a new pool question.
I''d appreciate any suggestions.

I would use the XML function from Captivate 4.
- Make yourself a test quiz with two slides, one being a multiple choice.
- Export it to XML
- Open the XML File in Excel
Good point to start with is ns1:g and ns1:Source26.
Most likely you can get all your question into captivate that way.

890FXA-GD70 slot use question..

I am considering the 890FXA-GD70 as an upgrade board. I have also considered the 890FXA-GD65... but the GD70 has a Bios available for the Revo SSD. (also a possible future upgrade want)..
In research on the 890FXA-GD70.. I have read that the one and only (PCI Express 2.0X1 slot).. is not useable if slots 1&5 are used for a Crossfire setup.
Is it true... If I install my 6870's (2ea) for Crossfire.. that I will not be able to install my Creative Soundcard? It will be blocked by the lower 6870?
Too bad I don't know that a future Bios update on the GD65 is in the future, for the Revo's. I would just buy that board. At MSI... it shows that the 890 series boards are AM3+ ready. This will allow me to upgrade now... and still be able to switch to AM3+.

sjay... all correct.. upgrades are like a new toy... doing the same job.
I upgrade ever few years... it's been three... I now have an EyeFinity setup with 3 22" Monitors. Way functional, beyond gaming having multi-monitors. For me.. I do a lot of multi-tasking and video crunching.. some gaming too..
My next board upgrade is for the upcoming AM3+.. why not.. it's the next step. I did go from a X3 720BE to a 1090T X6. I wondered if the X6 factor would be a benefit over the X4 970 @ 3.5.. But what I find is that my multi-tasking is great. I can crunch a video.. while watching another... and even browse at the same time. I saw lag with my X3 and I see no lag with my X6. Again the X4 might have given me the same results.. but, I have looked and All 6 cores are in the game... was it a waist over buying an X4? Don't know.. I went from 3 to 6. What I do know.. is that I feel it was a good choice for me.. and an improvement over my Overclocked X3.. my X6 is running stock..so far..
My SSD... no doubt fast.. and yes.. there are setup with an SSD that an HDD doesn't require... a gain... only seen so far in gaming and boot up... using my PC otherwise... not sure it is a blazing difference over my HDD performance.. for browsing... but my video... wow... between the X6 and SSD... the process of completing a video is blazingly faster... like 1/2 the previous time.. what prev took about 20min to do.. now takes about 10..
So do I need to update...no I am going to build a second PC... so a newer AM3+ board makes sense.. But still... no one has confirmed my original question... will my lower VideoCard install block my Creative card from install. Is on-board audio good, yes... but you are not taking into account that my soundcard has a front bay that I use everyday.. It's not just sound I'm after..
It's always amazes my how people can give advise based on their personal use and needs... good advise is based on the other persons wants and needs... even if it differs from yours.. but I appreciate you taking the time to express your feeling.. My SSD give me over 200MB/s... My HDD gives me just over 100MB/s.. not noticeable difference you say... it's in the math.. Does Crossfire work.. is it a rip off... not based on my average FPS in a game I play.. I have a more consistant higher FPS since going crossfire... but the games will play with just one... I don't think Crossfire/SLI is a rip off suggestion for us to spend a couple of hundred dollars... but it is a toy..
Well before I buy the board I will contact MSI themselves and ask tech support... I want my soundcard and it's features.. I am no master of all... but I know what I like... and a soundcard does release resources fromthe MB.. a tiny gain.. Who likes blue.... who like green... sure glad life has differences..

ToString and StreamTokenizer - general use questions

Hello everyone.
I am currently taking a class in Java at a NYC school, and got into an argument with the teacher regarding the proper use of the toString method and the SteamTokenizer class. He claims the following:
1. toString() methods are primarily for debugging - i.e., I defined this method in a class I created in order to better represent the class' state visually - and he marked that as wrong - since I was not using the method 'properly'.
2. I was using the StreamTokenizer class in order to read in user input from the terminal - and only perform something if values entered were numbers. He claims that my use of the class is inappropriate - since it "doesn't do what I think it does" - whatever that means.
I just wanted to see what people's feelings were on the proper use of the toString method and the StreamTokenizer class (in regards to reading user input). Thanks!

Actually, I don't really understand your problem with this statement. Don't you agree that a method getAccountNumber should be created and that this should not only be returned by the toString-method. If you want your toString to return this value you can allways do this, for debugging purposes.
Another important argument; in these cases you do not excpect the toString to return important information that is called from other methods. What if another developer needs to debug and changes the debug-information? I know that where I work it's the first developer who would get blamed for this.
