Genius and large library seems like a no go.

I have a large library, slightly under 100k tracks,(yes in the music business and with thousands of cd's digitized over the last 8 years)and it seems that my genius, under Itunes 9, goes through the process and then as soon as it starts to send to Apple it tells me there is not enough memory - the apple store has an error. It was fine under version 8.x. Has anyone with a library that size or greater been successful in getting genius to function. BTW, aside from uninstalling, checking all settings, etc., I made a small library of about 1000 tracks and it was fine.

I had a similar problem because the external monitor was not properly identified. Some fooling around in the display properties finally allowed the monitor to be seen and then I could set the resolution differently then the internal monitor and clamshell worked fine, for hour and hours, even if the MBP went to sleep. Waking it with lid closed brought everything up on the external monitor.
Sorry but I can't remember exactly what I did. But it is my nature that if something isn't working the way I want it to I hit every button and or option in whatever screen I'm in until it starts work the way I want.
I do remember that originally there was only one windows open for display properties until I did something (???) and then there was 2 windows. One for the internal screen and one for the external. From there it was a piece of cake. Set different res and refresh rates (external is a older CRT).

  • How to print a selection of pages from a 3000   page PDF without having to scroll two wheels! Also is there a way to set printer options for just black and white? Seems like there is a lot missing here?

I have been using this for school work as much as possible and have come across a problem. With my lack of knowledge for apple it seems as though I can't navigate myself to a easy answer. The problem hits when I am printing pages off of a large document, and I don't want to print the entire document in color but I have no way "that I can find" for a black and white print option...
----- also a larger issue, when printing I need to select 1 page or even 20 pages... The time it takes to use a scroll wheel and the fact if you try and scroll fast sometimes you click off the screen then you have to start scrolling all over again... It seems like you would beagle to input from say page 1224 to 1236.... Instead I have a scroll a wheel? Just doesn't make sense...?
Can someone please help solve this for me!

Yes, that fixed it, thanks! I had no idea they clashed like that. I ruthlessly purged all other tables of contents, and then used Layout > Table of Contents to create a new one, and it worked.
It made more sense after seeing in this thread that table of contents styles are more like presets or entities than styles.

I have found this picture and have my own version of a piggy bank. I put my green piggy bank into this background and it covers this one and doesn't look too bad because it is the same texture. But I still feel like it needs to be tweaked a little to look more real. How do I achieve this. And can somebody maybe help me do it please?

  • Downgraded from Maverick and now It seems like SL is unstable.

    Hi,
    White MacBook (late 2009)
    8Gb RAM
I upgraded to Maverick and started to regret that decision since it felt like the laptop got slower. So I used my installation disk to downgrade again to Snow Leopard. I performed many software updates after installing Snow Leopard.
The OS X (I'm trying to use the correct terminology here) feels unstable and is acting slow and unreliable. Examples:
When I open Appstore the images won't load. This does not only occur with Appstore, but also with websites and documents.
Apps are crashing more often now. It just says that it crashed and asks if I would like to send an error report. This did not happen before I went from Snow Leopard --> Maverick --> Snow Leopard. Can it have something to do with my upgrade of RAM?
I can't install purchased apps from appstore. I get various error messages, here is the latest error message:
I have used the Disk Utility to repair disk permissions and with the 8Gb RAM one would think that this MacBook would be lightning fast.
Please give any hints, tips and tricks. I just want to have a normal, stable system that can do anything and not be slow and sometimes crashing and not loading stuff. Tell me if you need more info about my MacBook.
    Thank you,

Do I have too many photos? Apple TV is taking an extra long time loading my Aperture Photo Library (49,000 pix) to be used for Screen Saver duties. How long should this process take? If I back out of selecting which libraray to use, device reverts back to default of Animals pix. What's up?  Anybody?

I have a PC desktop and an iPad.  I have a large library of PDF documents on my desktop that I would like to sync with my iPad.  I would like to be able to download new PDF's and make edits on existing PDF's on either device and have those edits and new PDFs synced to the other device.  I would also like to have my library available on the iPad even if there isn't a wifi connection (i.e., not on the cloud).  Is that possible.  I don't mind if I have to purchase a separate product or a product upgrade ect.

You can't use an external hard drive like you would with a computer.
You can use a USB flash drive & the camera connection kit.
Plug the USB flash drive into your computer & create a new folder titled DCIM. Then put your movie/photo files into the folder. The files must have a filename with exactly 8 characters long (no spaces) plus the file extension (i.e., my-movie.mov; DSCN0164.jpg).
Now plug the flash drive into the iPad using the camera connection kit. Open the Photos app, the movie/photo files should appear & you can import. (You can not export using the camera connection kit.)
When you first connect the USB flash drive, you will only see thumbnails of the pics on the iPad; you have to import the pic file to see the full size. With your large library of pics, you will have to do this repeateably and then delete pics so you don't exceed your memory capacity.

Hi, my name is Gerard and my iphoto library is getting very large I would like to know if I can store all or most of my photos in a external hard drive and access them from Aperture?

Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive

when i import from my video camera into imovie the clips look tall and thin. tried different imports like full size or large have imported both sd and hd but seem to make no difference everything seems to run ok including sound. whats going on?

    Hi Brad,
when you use Streamclip to convert media, use the same name for the exported file (only with different extension). Then make a shell script calling
    touch -r origFileName.mp2 newFileName.mov
This will copy the exact time and date from origFileName.mp2 to newFileName.mov
The script may look like this (save the file, give an exec permission to it and call it in the right directory):
    #!/bin/bash
    for i in `ls *.mp2`; do
    NEWNAME=$(ls "$i" | sed -e 's/mp2/mov/')
    touch -r $i $NEWNAME
    done
You may need to adapt the extension names used (in the example above .mp2 is input file to get the date/time stamp from and .mov is the output file to stamp.
    Have fun and cheers

  • Managing a large library: replacing a single media-filled hard drive; Drobo and iTunes?

Hi! To begin with, thank you for your time in reading my query... I am finding out that I am unique in having an iTunes library as large as mine: it is presently approximately 11Tb, spanning over 4x2TB and 1x3TB drives (5 drives total).  I have over the course of the last 8-9 years been digitalizing and converting an extensive cd/dvd collection (with the intent of packing them all away into storage).  The library is organized via iTunes Media Folder organization, and new items are copied into the media files: when one hard drive becomes full, I simply change the location to a new drive.  This has worked well and have only had one challenge to date: when I moved from a PC to Mac, but I (or more accurately the library) survived the ordeal...!
How do I replace one hard drive and have iTunes still find the media?  I am beginning to feel a bit queasy about one of the earlier hard drives, and feel it is about time to replace it with a new one.  I have NO idea, however, on the easiest way to do this... consolidating library won't work as it would want to move the entire 11TB of media... moving via Finder the media to a new source and then dragging to the library simply doubles the entries in iTunes... deleting the files in iTunes and adding again from new source would lose all play counts, metadata... years of careful tagging and album art additions lost (not even remotely optional!).  I think I could call myself somewhat an "advanced user" in iTunes, playing around with scripts, etc, and I feel like the solution is staring me straight in the face... but for the life of me I can't figure this one out!!!
Moving media to a Drobo? An aside (oh, call it question part II...!), I'm considering moving to a Drobo 4-bay ( http://www.drobo.com/products/drobo.php ) for the media library: presently I have each media hard drive backed up to another hard drive, but it is anything but frequent... or a simple task... and I like the level of security and ease of use the Drobo claims.  I of course would still need to split the media library over 2 Drobo's...  feedback on any experience with using Drobo's with iTunes?
    All suggestions welcomed!

...if I highlight just one album within iTunes and then "consolidate library", it will move ONLY that one album to the new location (as determined by the location listed within my advanced settings)?  Seriously?!!!
    yes.
for such a small task, you could also use this script:
    Re-Locate Selected v1.1
This script will re-locate the files of the selected iTunes tracks from their current location to a new user-chosen folder. iTunes will be updated with each track's new location and all of each track's meta-data will be preserved. Option to remove the files from their original location. (I don't advise using this on more than an album's worth of tracks or so at a time; re-locating dozens of tracks' files to a single folder doesn't seem to make much sense to me.)
NOTE: If your "Keep iTunes Media folder organized" preference set, you will not be able to create new folders in or re-locate files within the iTunes Media folder; outside is OK.
why did you choose to use a RAID 5 config vs. any other config?
because RAID 5 allows for one failed drive in the four drive configuration.
    read more about it here.
You decided to continue to use your original firewire externals as back-up: does the RAID configuration not adequately do this?
i'm paranoid when it comes to my precious iTunes library
Speed with the NAS, especially performing simultaneous read-write operations: adequate?
more than adequate. however, all my gear is hardwired to my time capsule (except the iDevices, naturally) so i'm getting gigabit speed and a lot of bandwidth.
one thing, though: i have set my NAS to spin down the hard drives after 20 minutes of inactivity. so, if you watch a 1 ½ hour movie, and select the next, you will experience a short delay until the drives spin up again.
never had that with my directly attached firewire drives but it's a small price to pay for the amount of space and features you get from a NAS.
so, if you opt for a NAS, i would recommend this particluar item (what i use). a fella called Stephen Inoue blogs about Macs and Synology. you might like to pop by and have a look:

  • Optimize performance of large library and masters, and hardware?

I followed some very useful advice here during the transition from Aperture 2 to 3, about a year ago.  It dealt with keeping things running efficiently, when managing 100,000+ photos in your Aperture library.  Defragmentation, eSata drives, referenced files, etc.
The best information came from a "Kevin J. Doyle".  I'd be delighted to hear from him how he currently has things set up, including hardware.  (Like me, he is a registered user, but I don't see any way to contact him directly via e-mail, and don't see any web page for him elsewhere.  So this is a message in a bottle. . . .)
I'm currently wrestling with inadequate hardware (iMac 7,1, with 6GB Ram, and multiple hard drives via fw800), and suffering long hours doing basic housekeeping just to keep things barely adequate.  For example, after I've done a lot of overnight copying and repairing of things, I still have to wait more than ten seconds for an individual image to load on screen before I can edit it.  And if I use brushes, the resulting "processing" can sometimes take up to a minute before I see the particular effect of my brushing.  I waste a lot of time.  (I spend a lot of time keeping customers updated on my slow progress with their pictures too, hoping they don't get too frustrated.)
I know it's a common observation, that computer hardware and software must be routinely maintained (usually via other sofware, eg. Cocktail, Disk Warrior, etc.).  I think I'm beyond the point I can eek out better performance from this generation of iMac.  I'm thinking about the Mac Pro next.  I'm not too concerned for now about the rumored end of Apple development of the Mac Pro.  I probably should be, but I'm sure that anything I get hold of in the Mac Pro line from the last two or three generations would be faster and easier to use (organizing multiple hard drives, in particular).
I'm also keen to know how to organize my library better.  I have 250,000 and counting photos, referenced.  2TB and more of masters.  I work with thumbnails, but without previews (because they made the library too large to copy in a reasonable time, i.e. overnight via fw800, and did not seem to speed up the editing in any way I could measure).  Currently everything is in one library.  I've tried making a small "work-in-progress" separate library, thinking that might speed things up.  It made no difference.  Tried the same with managed versus referenced.  No difference.  Anything else I could try?
My masters are located on a very fast (raid-5) and large (6TB) disc, accessed by the library via fw800, because that's all I can get from the iMac.  FWIW, the location of the masters does not seem to have anything to do with the editing performance slowness.  I and others here ran those tests a while ago, when I switched from a managed to a referenced library.

It is time to move to more modern Sandy Bridge hardware. New Mac Pros with the latest graphics support will almost assuredly be available soon. I suggest waiting to see the choices/prices and then moving to more adequate Thunderbolt-based hardware, very much preferably Mac Pro rather than iMac if the new MP pricing is at all civilized.
Top iMacs obviously have cpu speed (for those who can tolerate the glossy display) but for heavy images work a true tower with a top graphics card has the appropriate beef to best perform the tasks you are presenting.
Sandy Bridge Xeon cpus are available Q1 but there is however some chance that Apple might delay the MP upgrade until the Ivy Bridge Xeon cpus in the April/May time frame.

  • Why does the new operating system not delete the moved files from their original location - it seems like an enormous waste of space, time and effort to clean up every file once you've moved it

Why does the new operating system not delete the moved files from their original locations - it seems like an enormous waste of space, time and effort to clean up every file once you've moved it - also, when transferring large amounts of files it becomes a very large problem remembering which files were transferred and which not.

You're going to need to be more specific, as I'm not quite sure I understand what you're talking about.
If you're referring to copying from an external hard drive or flash drive, and you want to actually move files rather than copy them, you can hold down the option key to force it to do a "move" rather than a "copy." This is not new behavior, though... the Mac OS has worked this way as long as I can recall (and I've been using it since 1984).
If you're having a problem with trying to move files from one place to another on a single drive causing them to be copied instead, that is likely because of some permissions issue preventing you from actually being able to move them.

  • Why is my Macbook Pro suddenly and constantly shutting down/crashing on me and giving me a blacked out or blued out screen with lines?  Seems like a total system failure is happening?

Macbook Pro- shortly after upgrading to free software upgrade to Mavericks- 10.9.5-
has suddenly been freezing up, but went more directly to 'shutting down,'  CRASHING on its own.  Most of the time, if I'm even able to successfully get the laptop turned back on, it only stays up/on for a few moments before repeating the failure.   The failure is often accompanied with the monitor going 'blank,' or most typically either 'blacking out,' or going blue/green or grey screen with lines or grids all over the monitor.  All Desktop visibility, functions or applications in process disappears.  This has caused repetetive 'forced shut downs,' which I never usually do, unless prompted to because I have no choice like this.... Or as I said, the computer itself will just shut down and turn off by itself.... Can anyone tell me what this issue is, and I'm pretty sure other Mac users have seen this exact thing I'm describing happening on their laptops, with their systems or on their monitors.  Someone please explain or point me in the right direction... as naturally my laptop just went out of warranty as well.... And I don't know if this means the entire system is basically corrupted, dying/dead... and or if it is a monitor issue, a hardware issue, software issue or if there is anything that can be done to restore, repair it, etc.?   Also another thing I have noticed ever since getting this laptop- (few years old now...) is that it runs VERY HOT... has in fact burned my lap /skin many times... and seems like the fan or internal operating systems/functions are also perhaps not functioning properly.  Can this also be causing the problem?  Or is it a corruption or virus of some kind? etc.   Thank you.

What you describe sounds like a hardware issue. Unfortunately, you'll need to get that checked out by Apple. If you have an Apple Store near you, make an appointment with the Genius Bar and take the machine in for evaluation.

Album artwork can be added/changed on songs via the iTunes Get Info menu item from the File menu. Note that music that you loaded from CDs will not have any artwork. If you want to aquire artwork you can try the File menu item Library > Get Artwork or you can download artwork from the internet, etc. Note that just changing artwork on your computer won't affect the iPod until you sync.
If the artwork is correct on your computer iTunes then delete all the music on your iPod by syncing with iTunes with no music selected. Then reload the music onto your iPod by again syncing with iTunes with all the music you want selected.

I then synced my iphone and iPhoto it seems has rebuilt the library from the old copy of the library (2011. I have Time Machine but I can't restore the last 3y photos as I guess Time machine does not back up the other HDD.
Any chance of finding my treasured photos somebody?

Sounds like you have another iPhoto library someplace - under no conditions would iPhoto revert a library to an older one - you just need to find and open the correct one
Depress and hold the option key, launch iPhoto and use the resulting select library to look st the libraries you have
