Genius Bar Can't Replicate Problem - What Now?

Hi,
I have had an issue with my iMac where it freezes and there are consistently 3 loud beeps over and over or sometimes a very loud screeching noise. I have seen a few people saying this is a RAM issue but the problem i have is the Genius Bar couldn't replicate my problem and within 2 hours of me dropping it off they said i need to come and colelct it again.
What can i do now? When i contact Apple it always says i have to take it to the nearest Genius Bar so if they can't do anything what are my options?
Also, is there anyway perhaps static/ overheating/ interference from other devices could be the sole problem? The reason i ask is that is my iMac at home has this problem and then the other day my girlfriends brand new Macbook Pro started doing the same thing... however, in other places (e.g Genius Bar) this does not seem to happen and is very hard to replicate.
Therefore could there be an external factor influencing it?
Thanks,
Martyn

I'd try running memtest to test the RAM. The "Geniuses" may not have had the patience or interest in testing the RAM long enough. Finding RAM errors can be very tricky. The next time it freezes, see if there are any  messages in Console in Utilities from around the time of the freezes. Look in system.log and scroll through elsewhere to find anything under "Diagnostic." Copy them if they exist and and show them those.
To test the memory, get memtest and run it in single user mode, where it will test as much memory as possible, more than with the OS loaded.
You can get memtest + directions from the link below. However, ignore running it from Terminal. Instead, boot into SU Mode, Cmd-s at the startup chime. (Best to startup from a full shutdown.)
At the prompt, simply type  /usr/bin/memtest all 3 -L Observe case and spaces.(From this link It will be installed in /usr/bin/) Then hit return. This will run three loops of memtest and create a log in Console in Utilties.
If you want to run memtest longer, which may be advisable, since RAM errors can be very elusive, just remove the "all 3" which will give you /usr/bin/memtest -L  and hit return. It will keep testing until you quit it.
If you want to quit the test, just hit control-c
When finished, you can just type in "reboot" and hit return.

  • Mac book pro 10.5.7 sleep issue..... not even sydney genius bar can help me

ok hey guys, this is my first ever post on a support forum so please help me out!
I'll give any specific hardware info if needed later on but this is the basics:
i have had my mbp for over a year and 6months into it my mbp started going into sleep mode for no reason ...and no im not simple the energy settings are set to never sleep so its not that. Since then i have tried and tested everything under the sun to resolve the issue i have been to the genius bar and booked it in several times, each time they tell me they can not find any problem. I have had the logic board replaced - i have tried removing the p.list files, resetting pram thingy the battery test thing....everything...i have looked on endless forums for a resolution but nothing works!, it will go to sleep at random times generally when im doing alot of things on it it can run fine for days maybe sometime weeks but then its starts playing up again. When it does sleep the screen goes blank and the power light pulses but worst it cuts the internet connection which is terrible coz i have a time capsule and it cuts that link as well and messes that up entirely! sometimes it will just keep cutting out every 20-40 seconds untill i wake it by tapping the space bar or moving my mouse sometimes it just shuts down completely - i have done a compete erase & reinstall but ill b honest i still reinstalled some programs from my backups that cant be downloaded anymore (isquint etc) coz the genius guys said maybe a program is corrupting the hardware but if anyone has any ANY ideas or has the same problem please! tell me - im sure i could add more info n stuff but if u want 2 ask me specifics then i will answer anything to help
    thanx again guys.
i should say at this point the only relief im getting to stop it from sleeping is if i disconnect the power adapter and use the battery that seems to stop it, but it has crashed(slept) on battery power as well but as of today doing this seems to help ....hasn't crashed since writting this! LOL

Has anyone got any assumptions on suspect software that may cause my problem??
I see that louie has a possible response for you. I had forgotten about that problem.
lastfm, transmission or handbrake. Can anyone confim issues after installing these apps?
if not these softwares then im convinced im dealing with a power issue.
I would be doubtful (although not completely dismissive) of anything like these being the source of your problem.
the genius bar has said it may b an enviromental issue. this also may be the case, tho not so much recently. They said perhaps magnectic fields may cause it 2 go 2 sleep and its true moving my MBP around does seem to settle it for instance if i move it out of my room im yet to see any of my sleep issues occur
The movement sensor might be involved, as also louie's excellent suggestion of the temp sensor. It is difficult to know how to test these effectively and might need more tools than the GB can muster.
But i dont live in a electricity tower and i did move my MBP to the other side of my room where it worked for a good month - and then started again with the sparatic sleeping.
It is hard to disprove a negative. The only way to bring some sort of evidence to the table if there were some such interference would be to use the computer for an extended period away from where you are using it now. If it works without problem in (say) Starbucks or some other neutral area, and then fails within a few minutes of returning to your home, then there is something stronger to work with. Then you can start to track down some external source, I would guess.
So i will try a safe start as graham had suggetsed as this seems as a simple enough fix - but i do run a time capsule, ext 1TB HD, Wireless mouse etc ..which i presume will not work in safe mode .... and is the idea to just keep safe mode on untill it does crash again or will just starting up on safe mode then restarting solve the issue?
Time Machine ought to work in Safe Mode; and I would not suggest working that way for a lengthy period of time: just to start it up perhaps to clear something that is interfering. But what you write here is of interest: (A) The HD -- what is it (brand, etc, and how formatted) and how connected; plus the wireless mouse? What brand is that (and I presume you mean Bluetooth)?
As for A weak diode..I dunno what that is or how 2 check it
Right. I couldn't either, and most shops won't: they would just replace the board. There is a shop here . . . but that is too far for you.
i think the battery is ok ..as i said it performs better at this point when i disconnect the power...but not always... i had a terrible day yesterday when it would keep going to sleep everytime i reconnected the power, if i try 2 persist it will keep going back 2 sleep ever 30 seconds untill i eaither just leave it be for a while or untill it just turns off completely!
That suggests, as I mentioned earlier, something awry with the battery/power combination; especially if the performance is not consistent. A battery should deteriorate gradually, not come and go.
If it does turn off when i turn it back on it wont even get to the grey apple logo it just keeps turning off after 2-5 seconds (turning off not sleeping)
so im at a loss why that is!
No power. You have to wait a while until the power level is brought up to a workable level.
The power cord seems fine all the pins spring out - the middle spring is smaller than the others tho.
    Mine too. That seems OK.
Do post those logs. Someone might see the answer.

  • Snow Leopard fails to install - Tech Support and Genius Bar can't fix it

I am having an exceedingly difficult time installing Snow Leopard. I have tried everything I can think of and tech support AND the Genius Bar have failed me so far.
    The Details:
Every time I install SL it starts off well but sometime between 18 minutes remaining and 6 minutes remaining it fails. I get an error message that says there was an error that prevented installation. Looking in the installer log gives me a little more information. It usually has 15 or so errors, the last of which is always a very long line saying some package failed to install/unpack/be copied. The odd thing is that the file name is different every time.
    So far I have tried:
    Repairing the disk and installing
Installing from a different install DVD
Installing from external hard drive at the Genius Bar
Installing using RAM borrowed from the Genius Bar
Wiping the HD completely. I erased all my partitions and tried to install on a completely blank hard drive with a single HFS+ partition
I can only think of a few things that can cause the install to fail: DVD, optical drive, RAM, files on HDD, and HDD hardware. I think I've eliminated all those possibilities except HDD hardware. Changing that on a MacBook isn't trivial and I don't have one handy. Also I would think a HDD problem, or any hardware problem, would cause all sorts of errors and with the exception of this the machine has no serious problems and apps crash only occasionally. I've had no system crashes for as long as I can remember.
I have a Time Machine back up and have successfully restored my old Leopard System onto the MacBook (twice now) so at least I have the option to just give up on SL if I want to. As an aside, restoring from TM went well but not perfectly. Next time I install an OS I will be making a disk image backup. Does anyone else have any ideas? If you solve this problem I'll be eternally grateful and very impressed.
    Thanks in advance
    Jay

I'm sorry. I should have answered when you asked about RAM the first time. I have 2GB. I have tried installing with that, and I tried installing with RAM at the Genius Bar. I don't know how much the guy used at the Genius Bar.
Last night I restored from time machine so I currently have Leopard installed on the machine. After the restoration my email archive is little strange, I had to re-authorize iTunes and various other annoyances pop up but it runs without any problems.

will they replace my iphone 5s battery at the genius bar at my appointment, and if so for what cost?

You will have to ask if they are equipped for that.
If your iPod Touch, iPhone, or iPad is Broken
Apple does not fix iDevices. Instead, they exchange yours for a refurbished or new replacement depending upon the age of your device and refurbished inventories. On rare occasions when there are no longer refurbished units for your older model, they may replace it with the next newer model.
ATTN: Beginning July 2013 Apple Stores are now equipped to do screen repairs/replacements in-house on iPhone 5 and 5C. In some cases while you wait. According to Apple this is the beginning of equipping Apple Stores with the resources needed to do most repairs for iPhones, iPads, and iPod Touches that would not require major replacements. Later in the year the services may be extended as Apple Stores become equipped and staffed with the proper repair expertise. So, if you need a screen repaired or a broken screen replaced or have your stuck Home button fixed, call your local Apple Store to see if they are now doing these in-house.

  • Iphone 5 will not sync with my asus computer.  I have been to the apple store and genius bar can't solve the

I just got an iphone5.  My computer itunes recognizes the iphone when connected, but will not sync.  I have been to the Apple genius bar and they have uninstalled and reinstalled itunes several times and did everything they could think of, but still it would not sync.  I have an ipad2 that syncs with no problem.  So they told me to go get some computer help elsewhere...blamed it on Windows? You can poke around in the settings. There's a lot of stuff defaulted to on that you may not need. Such as notifications. Background app update, background app update. Try turning those off and see if that helps.

  • Aperture Script - Can't replicate problem

I wrote this script to rename and File Aperture projects by date : http://www.johneday.com/9/rename-and-file-aperture-projects-by-date .

OK, so I get the error that the EXIF tag does not have capture year. I'm on Mountain Lion, and recall that it worked on one project the very first time I ran the script after downloading and installing it... it's almost as if some flag gets set to true or false and it needs to be reset.

    EXIF Tag Name Mapping
The following table provides a mapping between EXIF tag names found in the Aperture 3 interface and EXIF tag names that appear in AppleScript.

Well, the obvious answer to your question is that Aperture in not seeing a 'CaptureYear' EXIF tag on an image. The way you have your try block set up, that amounts to a fatal error in your script.  why it's not seeing a capture year is a different question.  you might try asking the user with the problem to log the EXIF names for the images s/he's working on:
get name of every EXIF tag of image versions of theParent
you might also try breaking the complex command down into two simpler commands, in case ML has introduced a race condition:
set movables to get (image versions of theParent whose (value of EXIF tag "CaptureYear" is year of aDate) and (value of EXIF tag "CaptureMonthOfYear" is (month of aDate as integer)) and (value of EXIF tag "CaptureDayOfMonth" is day of aDate))
move movables to project isoImageDate of folder projectMonth of folder projectYear
Of course, it could just be goofy user error as well - trying to run the script on an empty album or somesuch.
Sorry I can't test this myself; my copy of aperture is an expired demo I keep around so I have access to the scripting dictionary (aperture questions are common enough to make that worthwhile), so I can't actually use it for anything.

  • Genius bar/apple support - trackpad problem

This may sound stupid butttt, my trackpad was wonky on one side of my brand new macbook, so I rang up apple and they sent me to the apple store in Eldon Square. However, I went today and the genius then said that he wouldnt be able to fix it and that I would need to ring up apple and get them to pick it up and fix it that way. The problem is is that apple support isnt open for macs now or tomorrow. Does this mean I have to wait until monday with a faulty trackpad until i can arrange a pick up? Thanks in advance.

Serial numbers starting with 5K are white box only. They could be refurbished or new, but are coming from a China plant according to the serial number checker.
I received a 5K white box replacement Friday, and its perfect. So if it was refurbished or new, this factory is doing a good job with them.

    Can anyone help.

I decided to check whether genius would work on another log on account on the same computer (in xp) and it worked like a charm (syncing w/iphone works too). So I simply rebuilt my itunes library on the other account by redirecting itunes to my old library. It still ***** that I had to do that, but at least it works now. I don't know why it didn't work in my windows account, it's exactly the same library! Oh well...

  • Eligible for Genius Bar advice?

    Hey all,
I was all ready to take my laptop to my local Genius Bar and ask for advice then thought it might be a bit cheeky - do you think this is something they can help me with? It's a bit out of the way so can't pop by to enquire.
I have a Macbook Pro. I used to use a Seagate external Hard Drive with no problems, however I dropped the HD by accident. It worked ok the first time I plugged it into my laptop, I created a new folder and everything, however after that it would shut down my laptop everytime I connected it. I tried it on another mac laptop and I got a message saying the computer couldnt recognise the drive. I also got this msg when I connect to my laptop again via a USB hub instead.
It's obviously the Drive not my apple laptop that's not working but is this still something Genius Bar can help me with? I've never tried Disk repair etc and would welcome their assistance to hopefully fix it without losing the HD's contents!
    Many thanks!

The genius bar folks are very knowledgeable and helpful, but it sounds like a problem they will not be able to treat except to say get a new external drive.
If the drive causes the MacBook Pro to shutdown there isn't much you can do in the way of working on it with Disk Utility.  You can go ahead and take the MBP and drive in and see if they are able to help you with the drive, it never hurts to ask.

I recently bought an iPod Touch from the US, when I was living there. I am now in India, and my iPod seems to be frozen -- the slider won't slide. So far, I've updated my iTunes and reset and restored the Touch. The problem with the simple solution: there's no Genius bar in India.
Any idea what I can do?

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.
