Genius is unavaible for this song

The genius feature stopped creating playlists. I've done the genius update multiple times, I've tried lots of different songs (from CDs and from Itunes), I've even tried songs that I had previously used for a playlist and it now says genius is unavailable for the song. Does anyone know a fix for this?

One thing that has helped in some cases when the Genius playlist feature has stopped picking up tracks is to deselect and the reselect all your tracks in your library. Control-click on any checkbox to unselect them all, then repeat the process to reselect them.
Hope this helps.

  • I'm getting a "genius is unavailable for this song" message on recent albums, after genius is updated, feels wrong!?

When I try to create a genius playlist from some of my most recently bought music I get the message "Genius is not available for this song" (righ click > Start Genius to cerate the playlist).
I'm guessing that for music that has only just been released or is obscure genius might not be able to start a playlist, but I'm still getting this message on some popular albums that have been out for some months now.
These are the albums I've bought over the last six months that I can't make Genius playlists from. I don't really follow the charts but I'm pretty sure the Adele, Cut Copy and Mark Ronson albums have sold enough copies by now that I'd expect them to show up in Genius results.
    Miami Horror - Illumination
Daft Punk - Tron: Legacy Soundtrack
    Cut Copy - Zonoscope
Ou Est Le Swimming Pool - The Golden Year
    Adele - 21
Adele - Rolling in The Deep (EP)
    The Black Keys - Brothers
    Röyksopp - Senior
Mark Ronson & The Business Intl. - Record Collection
John Lennon - Power to the Peope - The Hits
    Underworld - Barking
I've tried updating genius, disabling genius and the reenabling it. Disabling genius, deleting the file "iTunes Libary Genius.itdb" then reenabling it. All my other results come back but these albums still don't have Genius working.
All but one album were bought from the iTunes store, most in the New Zealand store, some from the UK store (I recently moved), the other album was bought from another MP3 store but is available on iTunes.
My music libary in iTunes is currently 108GB / 10,300 tracks, a mixture of songs bought from iTunes and MP3s ripped from my CD collection. I'm using the latest version of iTunes (10.2.1) on the latest verison of Snow Leopard on a 2010 iMac. I sync the Mac with my iPhone, iPad and Apple TV (old generation).
If anybody can help explain why these songs don't allow me to create a genius playlist from them I'd really appreciate it.
    Thanks / Russ

Oops, so you did. I must have been on auto-pilot
I don't have any of those tracks in my library so I can't tell you that any of them work for me. If Genius works overall then it's probably a matter of sampling a critical mass of playlists that already contain those songs, for it then to be able to suggest suitable "mixes". I've not tried to get to grips with the mechanism behind Genius but I'd guess it works something along these lines. Your library gets inspected and some kind of summary gets uploaded to a server which integrates data from lots of users, and then gives you some back. Perhaps the process just does take time.

  • Genius unavailable for this song

I have clicked on several songs in my music library, but every time I click on Genius, it says Genius is not available for this song. I have updated Genius and iTunes, but I still get this message every time.
Any help is appreciated, thank you.

When you highlight all the songs all the boxes will be checked. After you do the UNCHECK the boxes will be empty. Be sure to wait until this happens. Then do the CHECK and all the boxes will be checked. Wait until this happens. Then try genius. If it doesn't work then close itunes - open itunes and repeat. Close itunes then open it and it should work.
Good luck. Depending on the number of songs you have it can take up to 10 sec to change.
If that doesn't work then I suppose you have a different problem than I did.

  • In genius, it says: Genius is unavailable for the song...  No matter what song it is, it keeps on saying that

In genius, it says: Genius is unavailable for the song...
Then, underneath, it says "Choosing Update Genius from the Store menu will update your genius results. If after updating, iTunes is still unable to create a genius playlist from this song or artist, please choose another one.
The point is, that no matter what song or what artist I choose, even after updating, this message still pops up!

Thanks to the tip from squane about repopulating the library, GENIUS IS WORKING AGAIN!
It does seem to be related to having started iTunes Match. My guess would be the songs that did not make it to the cloud may be the culprit, but I'm not sure.
The steps are a little involved, but here's what I did:
    1) Go through the iTunes Match process
    2) Click the cloud icon in the sort bar at the top of itunes
    3) Select all the songs that were matched (if you're like me, you'll have about 50 songs/booklets that did not make it to the cloud for various reason -- so it's important not to select these at this point).
    4) Delete, and, of course, do not select "also delete this song from the cloud" (I'm doing this because I have a MacBook Air with an SSD drive, so I can't afford the space to have my 94 GB of songs on my drive).
If you haven't tried this before (only keeping the cloud version), you might try it with one song just to test. After the local version is gone, you still see the song but you need to be connected to the net to listen to it.
Now, all your songs, except the ones that did not make it to the cloud, are off your local drive.
    5) For all the things you want to keep, but did not make it to the cloud, I right clicked on each item, selected "Show in Finder", and dragged it to a folder on my desktop so that I'm sure not to lose it in subsequent steps.
    6) Quit itunes
    7) Go to your Music/iTunes folder
    8) Delete all files that begin with iTunes (so iTunes Library.itl, iTunes Music Library.xml, * Extras.itdb, * Genius.itdb)
I'd recommend backing up these files somewhere before deletion just in case...
    9) Restart iTunes
    10) Turn on Match
    11) Turn on/update Genius
At least for me, this process fixed Genius being unavailable for any song I tried, even those songs that were the basis of previous Genius song lists that I have saved. It still shows as unavailable for certain songs like before, but all the songs it previously worked for work again.

  • Genius is unavailable for the song ...

SInce late in 2010 my iTunes does not seem to be able to use any new music that I have imported to create a Genius. Older, previously imported, songs work fine (if they are recognized by the store, etc) but the new ones do not. Have have tried: reset Genius several times, deleted the XML files, deleted cookies from Safari (I did not move the entire folder out however) and still I get the following message:
"Geniue is unavailable for the song "Song Name Here".
Choosing Update Genius from the store menu will update your Genius results. If, after updating, iTunes is still unable to create a Genius playlist from this song or artist, please choose another one. "
    Anyone have any ideas?

Genius is not making playlists out of songs released after April 2010.  Maybe try calling Apple Support?  I haven't had any luck so far but maybe if enough people call they will understand it's such a big problem.

  • Genius is unavailable for the song - Current Music

Somewhere over the last few months the Genius feature has stopped working for me. This is for current music (Adele, Foo Fighters) as well as older music. It is VERY hit and miss, sometimes works, sometimes doesn't. I have looked throuhg the net for ANY answers and have not found any solutions. I have rebuilt my db, updated my genius, etc to now avail. My system and iTunes are up to date. Does anyone have ideas? Could it be something with the ID Tags?

Have a look at these threads:

Genius just doesn't work with songs released after April 2010.  I made a playlist of purchased music, arranged it by release date, and checked this.  Try this to see yourself.  The only exception was a John Lennon song I bought that was released on a compilation in October 2010, but was of course a re-release.  Many other people (I'd say all other people based on the unscientific survey of Apple Support threads!) are having the same problem.  I'm trying to work it out through calls to Apple Support.  There's someone very helpful there trying to help me out, but it doesn't seem to be getting through to the engineers.  Maybe if enough of us call they'll do something.

  • Genius doesn't work for any songs

When I want to start genius of any song, there always shows either "this song does not have enough related sons to create a Genuis playlist" or "Genius is unavailable for the song" even for the "most famous songs". Now I am so frustrated that I never know what this product really does. Does anybody has the same problem?
    Thx a lot.

I've found a lot of threads in this forum with the exact same issue.  Can ANYONE create genius playlists from songs from the following albums?
    Ben Folds - Lonely Ave
The Decemberists - The King Is Dead
Sufjan Stevens - The Age of Adz

  • Genius missing for common song

I just purchased Benny Mardones's "Into the Night" (http://itunes.apple.com/us/album/into-the-night/id146735442?i=146737318). Once I downloaded it, I clicked the Genius button and was told that there were no matching songs. I refreshed the Genius feature twice, and got the alert saying the update had succeeded. Still no Genius list.
Now this was the recommended (or at least most-popular) download for this song; it was a hit when it was released; and I have plenty of '70s and '80s bubblegum that should have matched it. Not getting a single Genius hit is extremely odd.
    1. Is there a way I can force recommendations (I'm guessing not)?
    2. Is there a way to report the anomaly to Apple so they can fix what appears to be an obvious bug in their database?

  • Why does genius never work for me?

I have recently purchased a new iMac.  I love my new computer.  It took me some time to transfer all my songs etc, but icloud really helped.  my itunes library now has all my music in it, plus some new albums I have treated myself too.  For some reason I cannot seem to create a genius playlist, every time i try it tells me "genius is unavaliable for the song".  but seriously, i have tried it now for about 25 different songs, it cant be unavaliable for everything? Am I doing something wrong? is their a glitch?  I have updated genius several times, so thats deffinately not the porblem.  Rather confused, and a bit dissapointed in genius.
Anybody else having the same problems?

just as equally, what does your comment have to do with answering my question?  I was simply just explaining my situation, Iam new to using the iMac and wondered if I was doing anything wrong.  But hey, Im new to using these forums, I guess I will remember in future not to share the full situation and just ask the question.  leasson learned...moving on.

  • Looking for single song and not an album

I purchased a song that later I realized was Karoake and it would not play the vocal on my car radio. I don't mind buying another copy of the song in the version that is not Karoake, but can't find another copy except having to buy an entire album. How can I find out if there is a copy of the song in a single and not an entire album? What I'm looking for is "There You'll Be" by Faith Hill. Thanks so much
    HP   Windows XP

I've done that and the only thing that turns up for this song says you have to buy the entire album soundtrack. I would have thought that you could buy just the single song - but certainly can't find it. In the meantime I have bought a song that says "karaoke" and when I play on my computer I can hear the vocal. When I play it in my car, I can only hear the background music. I can't make any sense out of this. When a song says "karaoke" does it mean that it is only the background music? That is what is confusing.

  • Has anyone purchased this song?

    Hello. I would like to know if anyone has purchased the following song;
    http://itunes.apple.com/au/album/finally-2008-kam-denny-paul/id296552084
I am asking this because I would like to know if anyone could send me a copy of the album cover. NOT the song. I am not a cheater. I pay for all of my music. I was able to get an MP3 of this track off of another website. I had to do so due to the fact that this song is not available in the USA iTunes Store. Because of that, the song has no album artwork. If anyone has purchased it, I would like to know if it is possible that you can send me a copy.
Thanks for any support and if anyone has any other ideas as to how I could get HQ iTunes artwork for this song, please let me know!

EDIT: I clicked onto the website, and I was told that due to copyright restrictions, I could not download the track in my country. I would've had to pay for it anyway, so it's okay. Thanks anyway.
    Thank you for your reply!
The reason why I choose not to download any random copy of the art online is because there are so many low-res copies and I want something of iTunes quality. I will see what the Juno Download has to offer. It seems interesting.

  • Will it charge me twice for one song which is available on two albums when buy both of them?

For example, Adele's Rolling in the deep is in the album Rolling In The Deep-EP and the album 21 as well.
I am going to buy these two albums. Will it charge me twice for this song?
    Thanks.

They are two different albums/EPs, so yes you would be purchasing (and therefore be charged) for both.

  • Genius on iPhone only displays "This song doesn't have enough related songs to create a Genius Playlist"?

I have 30 days worth of music on my (128 GB) iPhone and it displays the message "This song doesn't have enough related songs to create a Genius Playlist" for even the most popular Beatles tracks. My iTunes library will create Genius playlists with no problem at all, but my phone will not. The only thing I can think of is that I updated Genius after actually putting the music on the phone, but I have turned Genius off/on again on the phone itself to encourage results to be reestablished and yet still nothing. I have also synched the iPhone multiple times since.
I really do not want to remove and re-add 12,000 (75 GB worth) songs from my iPhone just to get some valid Genius results. Does anyone have a solution?

It is like the message says. You do not have enough similar songs for Genius to work.

  • I was trying to sync my itouch with my new mac, and some songs won't download because they are not authorized for this computer. But even after my computer was authorized they still won't sync. How do I fix this?

I was trying to sync my itouch with my new mac, and some songs won't download because they are not authorized for this computer. But even after my computer was authorized they still won't sync. How do I fix this?

I have the same problem. It is only with tv shows and only with programs I have downloaded after the software update.
Apple support sent me the above link too....but it doesn't solve the problem...my computer is authorized and the content is in my library and will play on my Mac air, but it will not sync the tv shows, it keeps saying my computer isn't authorized for it.
No answers here, but you are definitely not alone with this issue.

sure pretty simple.  make a backup of your current settings
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1766?viewlocale=en_US
then restore device from old backup you need pics off of
    then import pics to computer
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083
you may need to save pics to camera roll first
then restore the new backup and sync pics back to phone via itunes
