Genius privacy question

If I'm not interested in the cloud sending me recommendations to buy ... if I only want to create new Genius-created playlists from tunes already on my hard drive ... do I need to send information about my music library to the cloud? Is there any way to get Genius-created playlists without sharing any information with Apple, no matter how anonymously?
And if not, how secure do we all think this information really is? Is there any assurance that the DRM police won't somehow get hold of this?

Call AppleCare and talk to someone in account security. Sounds like someone has managed to hijack your account.

  • 'Genius' related question for anyone with over 1.2TB of music?

Anyone out there with a iTunes library with over 1.2TB of music?
Reason I ask, is that I've not been able to solve a problem in updating Genuis - I'm getting the error - 'Genius results can't be updated right now. There is not enough memory available ~ Please try again later.' or the 'unknown 4002 error'.  The steps I've taken to try and correct sometime back can be found in https://discussions.apple.com/message/12584815#12584815 and also shown here in sequence below.
I keep thinking this will be fixed with the next version iTunes but so far with the latest, things still the same.  So looking to see if anyone with a similar size library is having similar problems and it just a limitation of the program or it's something specific on my end that I can fix.
    Appreciate...
Up to this weekend I've had not issues with Genius. Worked beautifully and updated last Sunday as I have been doing every week since Apple added Genius. Yesterday I added a few albums and went to update and now getting the error of 'Genius results can't be updated right now. There is not enough memory available ~ Please try again later.' Now my library is well over >200,000 songs and only added 6 albums this time. Music sits on a external 2TB drive ~100GB free and my MacBook Pro has over 60GB open. Running latest Mac OSX and latest iTunes. Nothing new installed or changed since last Genius update.
To the points raised in this thread.
    1. I've been updated weekly with a Library with over 200K songs till now with no problem. Majority is what I've ripped from my albums & CDs.
    2. Deleted the albums recently added since last successful update - same result.
    3. Connected directly to the network bypassing router as suggested here - same result.
    4. Reinstalled iTunes program - same result.
    5. Repaired permissions - same result.
Problem remains. Welcome any additional thoughts.
Question for anyone with a music library
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/12584815#12584815
Ok, tried all the suggestions here yet the problem remains.
In addition what I posted above -
    1) Dumped the cookies in user/library/cookies folder
    2) Deleted the apple cookies found under Safari Preferences "Show Cookies"
    3) Repaired disk permissions
    4) Deleted iTunes Library Genius.itdb file
    5) Reinstalled iTunes (with the new 10.1 version)
    6) Restarted computer
    7) Rebuilt iTunes Library folder http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1451
    8) Deleted all iTunes dead tracks
    http://dougscripts.com/itunes/scripts/ss.php?sp=removedeadsuper
    9) Increased internet access speed
    10) Removed all open "[" and '}' brackets from songs, albums & artists
    10) Rebuilt my entire library from scratch!
Is there anyone out there with over 200K songs that can update their Genius? One thing I noted is the genuis.itdb file is just over 2GB. I'm wondering if there is a maximum size on this based on the error I'm getting. Any thought or know info on this?
Ok, think I may have found something here with this. I backed out all the music added prior to this problem occurring and ran the Genius update. All worked fine. I then started adding the music back little by little (running the update each time) until the problem returned. When the problem came back I ruled out the specific music added by backing that bit out, verified all was ok and added a different batch back in.
Bottom-line it appears that when my library exceeds exactly 1.208TB the problem appears. Interestingly enough it does not appear to be related to the number of songs, the size of the genius.itdb file (in fact when it was working the file was at 2.25GB - larger than what I reported before). It specifically seems to be related to the size of the overall library - when I have it for example at 1.2079 all is ok, 1.2081 it fails with this error.
I did try moving the library and related files to the external drive but same result. abavetta, I think your suggestion of this script may be a workaround for now - although from what I read, is this not the same that you can do anyway with iTunes by holding the alt/option key open start up? In fact I do have two libraries now - one with the 2TB drive which I use at home and another for 2x500GB disks I carry with me when i travel. I just reported the same back to Apple but doubt if any immediate solution will come for this. Too bad as one of the great things about having such a large library is the mixes you can generate via Genius. Anyway, such is life and will just live with this for now. I also just found this program called Tangerine! http://www.potionfactory.com/tangerine/ which creates playlists like Genius - although through a different technique I might also take a look at.

Just to let all know that may be having a similar problem, what I found by accident to fix this problem.
Reset all my Home Folder permissions using the resetpassword method from the startup utility in Lion.  Then turned off/on to reset Genius and cleaned out the cache folder for good measure.  Finally after more than a year without, have Genius up and running again.

  • HUGE ICLOUD PRIVACY QUESTION PLEASE PLEASE ANSWER

So i am 18 years old, but my parents still get my phone bill ect with verizon. Now i have NEVER EVER setup icloud or logged in with my apple id, AND my apple id they do not know the login to or have ever had acces to. So again my question is, if i have never ever logged into icloud from my apple id or even set it up, and if they dont know my password to my apple id, do my text messages, pictures, ect still go to there iCloud and can they read them? im 18 id like to know if my conversations and pictures are private.

Well, actually you asked 2 questions, but, If you have not created an iCloud account, nothing is going anywhere. So the answer to that question is No. The answer to the second quesiton about privacy, Yes.

  • Information Privacy Question

The organization I work for is very cautious about information privacy and security. The fact that the Creative Cloud can be used to store data on servers outside the country makes the option a no-go in their minds.
My question is, if the Creative Cloud is used solely to download the program installs, is there any reason for concern?
    - James

The fact that the Creative Cloud can be used to store data on servers outside the country makes the option a no-go in their minds.
    What Nancy said.
Creative Cloud membership comes with 20GB Cloud storage (individual) or 100GB storage (teams).
While you're a Cloud member, you can use all, some or none of it. If you use none of the Cloud storage, you can still use all the features and power of the software locally and securely store your data files locally, just as you've always done.
To my mind, information privacy and security is no different with the Adobe Cloud or any other Adobe software.

  • Strange battery symptoms and genius bar questions

    Hi,
I have a white macbook that I bought used with a used battery. When the battery started showing strange symptoms I replaced it with a new one. The new battery functioned perfectly for one cycle, then the same symptoms started again. Basically the computer isn't always recognizing the battery, with an X showing in the icon. Also with the charger connected the battery will sometimes charge, sometimes not. The activity shown in the icon doesn't always match what the stats listed in "about this mac".
So my questions: Is it likely that the brand new battery could be flawed and producing the same symptoms the old one did? I bought the computer reconditioned through a third party with an extended warrantee that won't cover the battery. How do I determine if the battery is the problem, or if it's the computer itself and I should send it back to the seller?
I've read some about the "genius bar" and I'm hoping for some info on that also. Is it necessary to make a reservation, or will they take walk ins? Will they give me any grief because it's a used computer not bought from them? What do they charge? Can I expect a complete diagnosis from them?
thank-you for any info anyone can offer!
I should add that I've reset the PRAM and NVRAm with no results. resetting the SMC (did I get that right?) worked only until the next time I started the computer. The Battery updater seems to be updated.
    Thanks

Yes, it's possible to get a defective new battery. It's also possible the AC adaptor is defective, and it's possible there's a problem with the motherboard.
I would look at the following articles for possible help:
    Apple Portables- Troubleshooting MagSafe adapters
Troubleshooting Magsafe power adapters with stuck pins
Use and cleaning of power adapter with MagSafe connector
You can also run hardware diagnostics:
How to run hardware diagnostics for an Intel Mac
Boot from your original OS X Installer Disc One that came with your computer. After the chime press and hold down the "D" key until the diagnostic screen appears. Run the extended tests for a minimum of two or three hours. If any error messages appear note them down as you will need to report them to the service tech when you take the computer in for repair.
    Some "common" error indicators:
    SNS - sensor error
    MEM - memory error
HDD - hard disk drive error
    MOT - fan error

  • Privacy Question: What are Best Ways to Protect My Literary Pseudonym?

    Hey Everyone,
I am an author embarking on the long process of reinventing myself--changing from a crime writer to a "literary writer"--for reasons that are too boring and stupid to explain. The nature of publishing these days is such that I will have to create a pseudonym, and submit my work as if I'm a total unknown--even at the agent level because, trust me, if a publisher asks an agent for my real identity the agent will give it. Therefore, it's crucial to me that no tech savvy assistant can simply check my IP address and go--"Hey, it's old so-and-so!" I don't want to use a "front." I could go through a lawyer, but that would be cumbersome and expensive.
I will be getting a separate "burner" phone for this venture, and of course use a P.O. Box rather than my home address. I still have to figure out the best way of getting a separate tax ID that won't be automatically linked to me--whether by a DBA or a corporate subsid.
I'm not worried about security of my actual computer.
    My initial questions are:
Will I be able to send emails from my home network and still remain pseudonymous?
Will I have to use an entirely separate computer for Mr. Pseudonym?
Will Tor be of any use here? (I tried it out and found it slowed my MacBook to a crawl.)
Can you recommend a forum where I might get expert advice on this? (The advice available from writers' orgs assumes your agent will know who you are--not what I need.)
Thanks in advance for any guidance you can give.

The new plastics really don't have the discoloration problem, so you don't actually need palm rest protection. Any dirt can be taken care of with a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser. I use only a silicone keyboard cover by Carapace to protect my macbook. I type so much that the letters often wear off my keys, and this will prevent that, as well as dust entering through the keyboard or, God forbid, any spilled liquid. The macbook heat vents are in the back, so my macbook does not overheat with the keyboard cover in place.

  • Genius Recommendations Question

Ok, genius is awesome... I was used to last.fm being my choice for getting to know new artists, but genius does a great job. However, there is a slight problem i don't get, and even why apple chose to program iTunes this way is beyond me.
When listening to your music in shuffle mode, your genius recommendations don't update. It will always just show the recommendations for the song that is selected in the list, being the song you clicked to start the music playing.
Choosing spacebar or "play" button on my mac keyboard does nothing at all, then a message saying "Select a song in your library to see related music" is showing.
Not only is this a bit annoying, as i wanna see related artists, and become aware of some other cool music. And also, wouldn't it have been better for apple to make it so the genius recommendations was updating for the playing song, and not the song that was selected? There would be more recommendations, and potentially more sales in iTunes.
Anyhow, does anyone know of a setting to change this?

  • Genius Bar question - Internal Dust clearing - Intermitted Shutdown

I believe my macbook needs to be dedusted. It is over heating which causes it to power down instantly at odd times.
Does anyone know if the DeDust service would fall under AppleCare? I don't want to start taking it apart myself until the Applecare plan ends.
If it isn't covered any clue what the cost will be in a CT Apple Store?

If it's making odd noises, you definitely should have a Genius take a look at it. They'll be able to pin-point the issue--whether it's simply a clog caused by dirt or a more serious problem--and let you know what needs to be done for fixing.
Before you head to an Apple Store, I encourage you to make an appointment using this link: http://www.apple.com/retail/geniusbar/
So long as you show up on-time, you shouldn't have to wait too long to talk to someone.

  • Genius playlist question(just curious)...

I was curious how exactly the Genius playlist function works, specifically what criteria it uses in selecting songs. I ask, because I've made several Genius playlists, and I notice some of the same songs keep popping up again and again? Also, it seems to favor songs I've purchased from the iTunes store. I thought that it only selected such songs, but I noticed it had also selected a handful of songs from other sources(imported CDs, songs downloaded from websites, etc.).
Also, is there a way to get it to use songs that aren't checked? I have two iPods, a 4GB nano(2nd gen) and an 80 GB classic. I use the "only sync checked" function for the nano, and I sync everything for the classic. I have more than 7,000 songs, and I don't want to have to go through them one by one, checking and unchecking, just to get Genius to consider every song. (and no, I don't want to use a different method to synch my iPods, the way I do it works great for me)

    It only uses checked songs.
As for how it works, I'm sure that's Apple's secret and they intend to keep it that way...
Since you're not open to leaving all songs checked and just syncing selected playlists to the nano, you might try a 2nd library ITL file to build Genius playlists. You can then export them to XML format, and import them into your current ITL file.

  • Genius playlists question

Sorry if this has been asked before but I was wondering if there is a way to create playlists from the genius mixes. Like instead of just choosing a genius mix in itunes can you make it a playlist to use on your ipod?

Like instead of just choosing a genius mix in itunes can you make it a playlist to use on your ipod?
    Yes.
Use this script -> Dumb Down Genius Mix Playlist v1.2
"This script will copy the tracks of a playing Genius Mix playlist to a new "dumb" (regular) playlist, which, for example, can be copied/sync'd to older iPods that do not accommodate Genius Mixes. You can subsequently copy the contents of additional Genius Mix playlists to the new playlist, refill it, or create more. (Each Genius Mix playlist only contains about 70 tracks maximum, which is why you may have several, say, "Rock Mix" playlists.)"

  • Genius Mixes Question

Does anyone know if you can sync a Genius Mix on iTunes with an iTouch?
    Thanks

Yes, as long as the iPod is running OS 3.1 or later.
