"Genius" told me I fried both Xeon Processors in my Mac Pro

So I've been having a couple problems with my Mac Pro. Sometimes when turning on the MP or when coming out of sleep mode the display won't come on. Tested the display and cables on other machines and it works fine. I'm able to turn off the computer blind (control+eject, return) so I assumed it was the graphics card (ATI Radeon HD 2600) but before I replaced it I decided to take it to the Genius Bar to have it looked at.
The Genius told me the fans were running high when he powered it up and said that wasn't good then after a brief reboot (while holding optioncommand+UP, whatever that does) he said I fried both processors, and yes he figured it out that fast.
I take good care of this machine cleaning it out with canned air once every other week and I don't use my MP for anything heavy duty that would fry the state of the art processor, I have the Adobe CS4 master collection but really only use Photoshop, Dreamweaver and Flash. I also have Logic Express and Office but that's about it for major software.
First question (that I didn't ask because I was floored by him telling me this) is that I have the 2.8Ghz Quad-Core Intel Xeon, doesn't that only have one processor? How did I fry BOTH of them when I thought there was only one?
I did ask how this is possible and he just said "there are a lot of ways it could have happened", then suggests I sell my MP on Ebay and buy a new one because its going to cost me $2000 to fix it. Now why would I buy a brand new one if the high-end processors can just fry for no reason?
So anyway, I get the MP home trying to figure out what to do. I take it half apart and give it a good cleaning, plug it in and BAM working fine. So obviously not the processor like the "genius" told me in his 5 minute examination.
So my main question is any idea's on what this could be AND what apps/software can I use to help pinpoint problems like this?

Fans always run high when you first power it on. It's normal, just the system testing itself out.
There is Hardware that turns the fans on maximum at startup, and keeps turning them back to maximum. If the system is working, the processor reads the temperatures (in the processors and various parts of the cabinet) and takes action to turn down any fans that are running too high for current conditions. It has to keep coming back and telling them to slow down -- if the processor halts, the fans go back to maximum within a few seconds.
I think the "genius" concluded that if the fans did not turn down right away, "your processors were fried." That is way too simple an explanation. There are lots of problems that could cause the fans to keep running on high. Also, I am not sure how many Mac Pros these guys actually see.

  • What upgrades for video and processor on a mac pro 1.1?

    Quick question.....
Was looking on the forum and i have not yet clear what could be done to upgrade the graphic card and the processor of my mac pro 1.1; so hope that someone has good solutions
    1) i have a x1900xt, works decently for software and games on windows, but would like to get something that support DX10 on windows, and that works good also for pro apps...is the geforce 8800 or ati 3870 the only options? and are teh apple store selling them for $279 even today? i would love to go to a best buy or frys and get one and save money and time, instead of ordering it online at that price....any suggestions?
    2) i have 2 dual core 2.66 (no idea what is the codename of the xeon processor); do i have any option to upgrade to a 4 core or to something faster?
Thanks a lot! when i got my macpro i was not thinking that i would need upgrades like for my pc, but i realized that it still needs some work on it, even after spending 2500 dollars ia lil bit more than a year ago

I tried to look for clovertown processors, and they are still around 250 each plus there are different models....could you give some models of processors that will work for sure on my 1st gen mac?
    Regarding the video card:
I tried to use the diamond 1Gb, and on the 8X slot it works basically at half the speed of the x1900 (3dmark 06 gave me 4200 for the x1900 and 2250 for the 4650); so the gain is close to 0
Under macOs does not work at all; and when i tried to swap the 2 cards to boot the pc and use the 16x rail on the 4650, basically Vista decided to not recognize either card, leaving me with 1 monitor off and one on, without being able to recognize the video card.
I wonder why the PCI utility on mac does not allow to set which slot will get the 16X....the only place where the x1900 fits is slot 4, so even if the card would work fine , i would have to swap cards and connectors everytime that i wanna play in bootcamp, and this is not the best choice
Last attempt: tried with a 4870 and looks like the flashing does not always work (read trough 26 pages of a post on another site); so since i don't want to pay 350 for the apple version, i've got a 3rd party 3870 for less than 200 dollars (shame that the 4870 for pc cost the same price), that form the links that you guys gave me, seems the best choice for pro apps and games, compared to the 8800 (and the plus that under bootcamp i can get a second card and use crossfire is a huge plus, especially when the price of this card will go further down!).
Thanks everyone for giving your suggestions, and hope that this post will help other people that, like me, were trying to update their machine to a better video card

  • TS3622 It even happens when you connect BOTH power cables on a Mac Pro 3,1

I  have a Mac 3,1 and have recently fitted the ATI Radon HD 5870 replacing the old graphics card. (It is one week old)
One monitor is the NEC Spectraview 2690 which is connected to the mini-Display port and the other monitor is the Apple 23" connected to the DVI port.
After I have shut down the Mac Pro at night and restart it the following morning,  two (BOTH) blank screens appears on booting up.
I then have to press and hold the power button to shut down the system and then reboot the sytem and then the screens come up properly for me to log in.
I can then use the computer as normal.
    Why does this happen ?

There is no BIOS in OS X. There is only the EFI stored in ROM that is not user modifiable. OS X is probably checking Bay 0 for the boot drive since that is where it should be. It won't check the Tempo drive since it is treated like an external drive. I suggest you open Startup Disk preferences to see if the Tempo device is selected as the boot device. If it isn't, then select it. That will probably shave off a few seconds in the startup time.

  • Do I need a 64 bit processor on my Mac Pro to run CS6 and Lightroom 4?

I would like to install Adobe CS6 and Lightroom 4 on my 2008 Mac Pro but may not have the right processor to run it.  I know I will have to upgrade my OS X 10.5.8 to at least OS X 10.6.8.  The system requirements specify a Multicore Intel processor with 64-bit support.  I have a Quad-Core Intel Xeon processor.  Does this mean my Mac will not run this software at all or slowly at best?  Will I only be able to use this software if I buy a new computer?
Here is what I have now:
    Hardware Overview:
      Model Name:          Mac Pro
      Model Identifier:          MacPro3,1
      Processor Name:          Quad-Core Intel Xeon

Please see the tech specs for LR 4 : http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop-lightroom/tech-specs.html
LR 4 and CS 6 applications will not run on 10.5.8, you need atleast 10.6.8 to run these applications.

  • What's the difference between the processors offered 2012 Mac Pro

I am trying to understand the difference between the Nahalem 2.8Ghz quad Core inel processor and the 2.4 Westmere Quad Core- ( 8 cores ).
What are cores? And which processor will work best with large images and Final Cut Pro editing?

GHz still rule but so does 48GB RAM for those large images.
    Hence the "sweet spot" 6-core 3.33GHz w/ 24GB RAM (minimum, 3 x 8GB, or iwth 3 x 16GB).
My feeling about the 2.4.... no, too slow.
Poor man's that is handy with processors: buy the 2.8GHz and upgrade yourself and save $1200 by buying W3680 (the 3.33 6-core) yourself from Amazon or others like Buy.com ($620).
This site really should help answer what and how to configure. Note that the 6-core is listed in Apple Store under the "4-core" so hidden from view. Or from Apple Store Specials refurbished models.

  • Should I bother yet? - G4-933 Mac Pro

    Hi All,
Given that I use mainly graphic software - Photoshop, Illustrator, Indesign, Freehand on my G4-933. And given that the mac Pro will be running these under Rosetta - should I bother upgrading yet or wait till these apps are all universal - est spring 2007?
For example the Macworld test shows that speed wise the MP2.66 model is comparable with a Dual G4-1.42 in photoshop.
Should I consider some other upgrade path in the mean time?
Grateful for any thoughts on the matter.

If you can afford to upgrade to 6GB RAM, maybe in a couple months, no I would not wait at all.
    2GB for Rosetta
    4GB for Photoshop
    2.66 or 3GHz model
Throw in some SATA drives for your work
Yes, it will be better, but take a look at today's
    http://www.macrumors.com and link to Barefeats
    http://www.barefeats.com
how much RAM did MacWorld have? not 6GB probably which seems to be essential for what you want. You could wait. You've waited this long
I have not seen a Mac I want or like this much - ever!

  • I have an old Power Mac 5.1 with an Inter Quad Core Xeon processor. (OS10.6.8) Will FCP 5.1 work with this computer?

I'm trying to recreate some edits with an old project file. The computer is older (this is all a friend's machine) and we're trying to transfer a project I've been working on to his machine. WIl it work?

I'm a bit confused, PowerMac 5.1 is the old G4 Cube, Quad Core Xeons would be a Mac Pro 1.1 to 6.1, but if you're asking about running it on the IntelMac in 10.6.8...
According to this... not very well...

I have both an iMac and a Mac Pro using Snow Leopart 15.6 as an OS. Do Ihave to buy TWO Lion OS to upgrade my OS'?

No. Open the App Store on one computer running Snow Leopard. Purchase and download Lion. On the other computer open the App Store, log on using the same Apple ID, re-download Lion at no extra charge.

  • Comparing the Power of i7 Processors in PC and Mac Pro Xeon

I am reviewing the pros and cons between purchasing the Mac Pro with 8 core (new neh. 2009) and purchasing a Dell system with the processor such as the Intel Core i7-940. The price of the Dell and Apple systems show a substantially higher total price for the Apple with similar memory and extras for both, but I am having trouble comparing the performance of the different Intel processors in each brand. I believe that the basic architecture is different, and it appears that the i7-940 processor is a quad processor but has 8 threads. Can anyone educate me on how to compare the two since I have not found any literature on point?

Both the i7 and the new Xeons have 4 physical cores and hyperthreading, which makes them able to run 8 threads.
They are both virtually the same, with the exception that the Xeon is able to be used in multiple CPU systems and has extra pathways to 'talk' to a second Xeon, The i7 does not and cannot work in a multiple CPU system.
Other than PRICE, and being marketed as a 'server/workstation' chip there is little other difference between the two, actually.

  • Which specific xeon processor do I have?

I'm curious to figure out EXACTLY which Xeon processor I have. Does anyone know how to find out, based on the serial or build number or something?

I do indeed have a 5472 Harpertown. It's a 3,1 in system profiler, with a bus speed of 1600MHz. I wonder if it's an 80TDP or 120TDP! They're both 5472s. Anyway, I have a cool story about buying it. I got one on Dec. 27 2007. I'm almost certain it was a Clovertown, because a few DAYS later, they released a new lineup, which was pretty much the same though, with my same 3.0GHz computer, just a few hundred dollars cheaper. I asked if I could get a rebate or something since it was only a few days after I purchased it -- they said no -- that I would send back the original, and they would send me a new one as soon as they shipped (about a month later.) The wait was worth it. In the process, I think I got one in the first batch of Harpertowns.

  • Mountain Lion Compatibility with Xeon processors

I have a Mac Pro with 2 * 3 GHz Intel Dual-Core Xeon Processors. When trying to download Mountain Lion I am told my computer isn't compatible, yet the require, emts suggest it should be. Any advice?

Even though this Xeon processor configuration is 64-bit, the ROM EFI on this Mac Pro is 32-bit. Mountain Lion requires it to be 64-bit. The Quad-core Mac Pro introduced in January 2008 has a 64-bit EFI, which is why the Mountain Lion hardware specs accept this machine.

  • System crashes when attempting to install 10.6.  Keeps asking to restart.  Computer is a Dual-Core Intel Xeon processor and 2 GB Memory.

I have tried to install 10.6 and when install is complete it says restart.  The computer restarts but keeps coming to a gray screen with a small black box that says to restart.  The processor is 2 x 2.66 GHz Dual Core Intel Xeon with 2 GB of memory.  This should be more than adequate.  Any ideas?  Has anyone encountered this before?  I had to restore 10.5 from Time Machine.

Your sig line says iMac, but TMK no iMacs were ever made with 2x2.66 GHz processors. Is this a Mac Pro you are installing on? Are you using a retail Snow Leopaard DVD?

i am using a server with windows 2008 server and xeon 5520 series processor. windows in 64 bit with 16 Gb of ram.
everything is working fine except the print option in crystal report..
i tried installing crystal report basic runtime but it says that it doesnt supprt xeon processor .
    kindly solve this issue .
    Thank you in advance

You'll have to supply a whole bunch more detailed info. Telling me that you have 2008 server and xeon 5520 series processor, windows in 64 bit is like telling your mechanic that you have a blue car with 4 wheels and it does not work. No info re. engine, of make or what the problem is... And with that info, you want your mechanic to fix the car...
    1) What CR / BO SDK are you using?
    2) what version of the above are you using?
    3) What updates for (1) above are you using?
    4) What development language are you using?
    5) How are you deploying the runtime for (1) above?
    6) What is the precise error message you are getting?
Think about the info I would need to accurately reproduce the issue. What info would probably be good to have?

I'm afraid your Mac cannot be upgraded to Lion, and thus is not compliant with iCloud. The only option you have there is to set Mail up manually to access your iCloud email, but the other facilities won't work.
