Genius Weirdness

Genius used to show me "Top Songs You're Missing" which I thought was awesome. I've noticed in the last couple days that part of the sidebar has been absent. Anyone have any kind of ideas what's up?

(My answer was just in case you had not turned it on)
Have you repaired disk permissions with disk utility?
Sometimes that puts things right followed by a restart.
A PRAM reset also tends to sort out many niggling bits http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379 (although your one does not necessarily fall into the categories: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1895 ).
Other than that, no idea. The very best of luck

  • Genius playlist weirdness

I'm wondering why when I make a GP out of 'song A', it will put 'song B' into it; but when I try to make a GP out of 'song B' it says "not enough related music to create playlist".
How can that be possible? Wouldn't 'song B's' playlist just pretty much match 'song A's' in that case?
How can it not have enough related songs to make its own if it has enough to plant it in another playlist?
    Thoughts?

    Bump.

  • PHP, Java, and Safari weirdness (Mac Web Genius needed)

If you know a good deal about the three, visit this thread:
    http://wordpress.org/support/topic/46465
The basic question boils down to: is this a Safari issue, or a code error. If you see the error, please suggest a solution.
    Thank you.

"After reading your post at the WP support forum, it obviously looks like the code you're using works by itself. It's only after you add it into the WP "loop" that it breaks. This is definitely not an issue with Safari, but an issue with other browsers which are not as strict with standards."
Respectfully, this is a backwards conclusion. I've add this exact javascript to 2 WordPress blogs and 1 PHP board.
    1. The Javascript works fine in one blog, all browsers.
    2. Only Safari can't properly load the same script in another blog. (the one in question)
    3. The Java script works fine in my PHP board, all but for one browser: Safari
    Logical conclusions:
    A. Something about the chosen themes in that one WP and PHP don't play nice with Safari (though different themes from different developers are unlikely to make the same mistake)
    B. Safari doesn't play nice with something in PHP, since it screws up both a WP blog and PHPboard. Remember, Opera and Firefox can run these sights fine, and IE nearly so.
    Right?

  • ITunes 9 Genius not updating - iTunes Store Error

Using iTunes 9, I am trying to update my Genius so that I can have the Genius Mixes however it seems to always be stuck on "Sending information to Apple…". I've let it run for 3 hours with no success and twice have had it say the there is an error with the iTunes Store. It doesn't seem to be sending anything as there is no bandwidth use.
Anyone else having this issue or know of a fix?
    *Fixed*
Following the instructions on post #12 of this thread http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?p=8454874
I was able to fix it.
    Quote:
"**** it! That was a tough cookie to crack!
Cookies!! Quit iTunes then go to your /user/library folder and move the Cookies folder to the desktop or delete it.
    Turn on Genius. It works!
There must be some weird setting saved in cookies with an incorrect URL to send the info to Apple."

  • MacBook won't turn on 98% of the time, help! Very weird things happening!

Hi there, any advice you have for me would me much appreciated. What happened with my Macbook is all very strange.
So, the morning before last, I was on my Macbook (which I bought in 2006 so it's on the older side, but otherwise worked great) and it was running low on battery. I was late for work so didn't plug it in before leaving. I left it open. However I have no roomates, pets, etc.
When I get home that evening, I plugged in the powercord and it wouldn't turn on. After trying a million different things, like taking the battery out, reseting the PRAM, etc, there were a few times where I got it to turn on, went through the log on screen, and was able to use my computer like normal for about 5 minutes or so, and then it would just shut off.
There were also many times when I would pres the power button and the screen would flash like it was about to turn on, and then it would make the noise that the computer makes when you're typically on 0% battery and it shuts down. Later in the night, when the computer was closed but plugged into the power outlet, it was by itself (meaning I wasn't pressing anything) making the noise that it was restarting. It made that noise about every 30 seconds for a few minutes. Weird.
It was also doing inconsistent things re: the sleep light. At times it was on, including when the computer was closed, and sometimes it would go from on to off. Also, the battery/charing was doing weird things. The few times I was able to get past the log in screen it showed that it was at 0%, even though the light on the adapter was green and it had been plugged in for a long time. Another time the battery icon had an X through it. I have 2 different batteries and neither one of them seemed to make a difference.
Also, yesterday I brought my computer into the Apple store and they put in a battery that was charged and it didn't seem to make a difference either. One more weird thing: when I did get the computer on in the spotlight bar it said it was indexing??
Anyways, I'm just confused/upset, etc. because I literally did nothing to the computer. I didn't drop it/spill on it, etc. I'm also frustrated because the guy at the genius bar litteraly only spent like 5 minutes looking at before he said i was SOL. He said it was the "main board" that was the problem. One of the things like I'm just confused by is if the main board really does need to be replaced, then how was I able to get the computer on and working those few times???
Sorrry this is so long, any help would be awesome!! I just don't have the money to buy a new computer, and I'm not sure it will be worth it for me to pay $300 to have it fixed when my computer's already pretty old and other things haven't been working for awhile (like my disc drive, camera). THANK YOU!!!

    EmadJamal,
the battery won’t melt because of long connection to the AC charger, although that has the potential of reducing the battery’s life.
Do you have access to a second 60 W AC charger to test with your MacBook Pro, or access to a second 13-inch MacBook Pro against which your AC charger could be tested?

  • After Every CLEAN Wipe my APP Store in a Standard Account Downloads Weird Software Automatically, EVERY TIME!!

    Hello everyone,
I have a very weird situation that is going on that keeps happening to me and has caused many "Weird" situations on my Retina MBP and other Mac's that I own.  I did have some of this in another thread, but most people simply don't think what I am describing is really happening, etc.
To date I have spoken with many Mac Genius's at multiple Apple Stores, I have spoken with many Level 2 Apple Care Rep and now have an Apple Certified IT person that visits my house once or twice a week trying to figure out what is going on.
    Anyway....
I will give a quick example and if anyone can explain this to me or has had a similiar experience I would love to hear back!! .....
So I have about 6 macs for my current and past business.  Plus I always love grabbing the newest technology.  That said this "Problem" occurs with every Mac I own.  Even to a brand new MBP Retina that no one has had access to.  I keep Firmware PW's on, I only use Eithernet connections, I have a $600 Hardware Firewall configured to let nothing in (No VPN's, etc)... obviously have sharing off, **** I don't even use Bluetooth.
Anyway when I wipe the drive I do it like this...
1.) Take out both the MAC HD and Recovery Partion....
2.) I have 50 MBPS Download Speed so Internet Recovery is very quick.  I go through the normal process.
3.) Once I have reached the new recovery partition from the Internet Recovery I partion the SSD a couple times in different formats and then go back to the normal Journaled that I will be using for my single partioned SSD
4.) Then I install and go through all the normal steps, expect I skip everything that I can.  I don't add location services, I set time manually and I don't sign into iCloud as this will be my Admin Account.  I normally just call the account Main or Admin.
5.) I check for updates and install any that might have not been included in the most recent Internet Recovery.
6). In the Admin  Account I set a tough PW and then begin with all the security options.  Again all sharing off, Firewall on, Wifi Off and requires Admin Access to Turn on, No Peer-to-Peer Networking without Admin Access, Bluetooth Off, Java and Extensions turned off in Safari, etc.  You name it I have done it as far as the GUI goes.  I am certainly no expert in Terminal, but can make my way around for some things.
7.) I create a Standard Account "The one in which I will conduct 99% of my business in." Again I create a strong PW for this account and confirm that the security settings that I setup in Admin match those of my Standard Account.
HERE IS WHERE THINGS GO WRONG...
8.) I go into options and login to icloud.
HERE IS WHERE IT IS ABSOULETLY WRONG...
    911) I login to the apple store as I want to dowlonad some of the simple apps so I can go to work.  IMMEDIATELY, it starts downloading a program called "Mountain" ... please don't confuse this with Mountain Lion (You can see it listed second in the APP Store search "Mountain")... when I look down at my Launchpad bar without hitting anything the 2.1MB file is downoading and then dissapears from my launchpad.
** Also as this is going on "storeagent" with the linux exec box icon next to it shows up saying "storeagent is attempting to install software to your computer"  It does ask the for Admin User and PW, but no matter what I hit this "Mountain APP" downloads.
When I first noticed this I thought this was legit, well it certainly is not.  I have never purchaed that "APP" however it does show up in my APP store Purchaes.  The gateway is obviously not doing it's job and FURTHERMORE I don't have any of the options to "Automatically Download New Apps, etc."  I simply just check for updates manually everyday as it is a 2 second process and Mounain Lion doesnt check automatically until every 7 days.
    Here is a Screen Shot...
Sorry for the long post... Anyway experiencing the same thing?  I can redo my drive over and over again... I have ever purchased a new Mac Book Air a year ago to see if it would happen and the problems eventually started and fairly quickly.  The weird thing also is that I have done wipes and renistalls in all sorts of different locations.
So all this said... how could it not be in the EFI or on the machine some how?
Thanks guys... I hope someone has experienced a similiar experince!!! .... as the Mac Store and Apple Care have been of no help!! ... and with a problem like this I think it is way above a level 2 Mac specialist head

    Hey etresoft,
I need that firewall for VPN Tunnels.  These are not setup yet, but in order to work from home... outside our office, this is a requirement.  Money is not really an issue and I do always back up kids / family photos.  I have two Thunderbolt backups attached to the Monitors.  So the 4TB with Raid 0, was cut down to 2TB and then I have another more movable / durable one that piggybacks off that.
I am considering the new Apple ID, the problem is I have a ton of Apps and a TON of Moview / TV Shows that have been downloaded over the past years.
The movies are easy enough, but it just ****** me off that I won't just be able to have them in the iClould and put on my Apple TV and have it right there with my Apple ID (My 2 year old loves Tom & Jerry )
It might come to the new Apple iD with minimal security, but being a partner in a business that runs the Internet Marketing team... we have very sensitive data that is stored.  That said large email list and many other items that make us money and the ability to run a successful business is important to protect.  Apple has these security mesaures in place for a reason and really the bottom line is I want to get to the bottom of what is causing this.
If you don't believe me, etc... that is fine.  I did start a new forum as you said and I am simply looking for people to throw some feedback my way, if they have any.
When you say thing like "I suspect you aren't telling the Full Story." it is upsetting because I am trying to be as detailed as possible and why would I ever be typing on this forum unless I was just looking for some feedback.
I did start my own forum, but please don't acuse me of not telling the truth or the full story as others were in the last forum.  That was a bad thread to jump in on, as it started out way more extreme than what I am trying to explain.
    Anyway...
I have never posted on this forum until recently... and I promise you I am telling you the full story and I am simply looking for feedback.  This is not fun for me.  I would rather be running the business 100% and not have to worry about this and spend time on forums that eat into my day.
    Thanks.

Agreed; Since the FX-5800 and up GPU's Require up to 7 Amps from the +12V Rail, then Yes 16 Amps is Very Light indeed , Dont Forget your P4 CPU under Stress (Gaming) Can require up to 10-11 Amps, combine that with the 7 Amps that your GPU May Require, and you are Over your +12V Rails Power capabilities...You should have at Least 20Amps on your +12V Rail, and because you are a Gamer! You should Have one of the Better PSU's Available that have 30 Amps + available on the +12V Rails. ie Enermax 465W or Antec 480W..............Sean REILLY875

  • Strange SMS problem - stumped the Genius bar

My wife and I both have 3GS phones on a family plan. We are able to send and receive text messages freely from each other and anyone else.
I can send SMS (pics and video) to her and anyone else, and she can receive.
She can send SMS to everyone EXCEPT me. At&T said it was an Apple issue after doing some manipulating at their end with no success. The Geniuses has never heard of this problem before, and I was told to reboot and restore. No change.
I upgraded to iOS4, and lo and behold, I can receive pictures and text from my wife.
I then upgraded her phone, and we are back to where we started.
There is no failure of delivery notice; it seems to send okay, but then.. nothing.
Does this scenario sound familiar to anyone?

i have the same problem, i text in arabic to overseas, but when i receive the message it shows symbols and weird letters, i have not had this problem before the ios 4, just started after the ios 4.
i went to apple store and the genius people were confused about this problem, they couldn't address it, or solve it. they end up replacing my iphone 3gs with new one, and i still have the same problem.
i believe apple engineers are not aware of this issue, i hope i can contact them so they can fix this hidden issue. any suggestions ?
    thank you

  • Why does my ipod touch keep making weird noise when i plug in my headphone and when i put music it sound fuzy

The other day when I was on my iPod touch (8 GB) I put on music but then something when wrong. When I plug in my headphone and put music on, it sounded like I was hearing music under water, and it sounded fuzy and weird. Then I unplug the headphone from my iPod touch (8 GB) and I got my computer and plug in my headphone and put music, and it sounded fine. What should I do about this?

    - Try cleaning out/blowing out the headphone jack. Try inserting/removing the plug a dozen times or so.
Try the following to rule out a software problem
    - Reset the iPod. Nothing will be lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory settings/new iPod.
    - Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store. Seems you have a bad headphone jack.
Apple Retail Store - Genius Bar
Apple will exchange your iPod for a refurbished one for this price. They do not fix yours.
    Apple - iPod Repair price
A third-party place like the following will replace the jack for less. Google for more.
iPhone Repair, Service & Parts: iPod Touch, iPad, MacBook Pro Screens
    Replace the jack yourself

  • Bug in Genius

The new iTunes 11.0.0.163 hung when I was using the Genius feature.  When I clicked the "bullets?" icon at right of current song display, a new panel displayed a scrolling list, about 10 songs high, of songs scrolling for 2-3 minutes.  Eventually the scroll stopped, but weird segments of the iTunes window started showing in other applications including Task Manager and Firefox browser.
After forced-closing runaway iTunes, a small window appeared with a warning-twang sound, titled ""Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Libr...", with a Red-Disc X in middle and a blank button on bottom. Clicking the button closed the window. Then a Windows System box reported that CyberMedia was restarting, though I wasn't running it before.  Weird, huh?
    Using Win 7/64 system.
And the new interface is quite confusing, for settings, sync, play selections, etc.  Will I become accustomed to it before Apple fixes it?

P.S.  The song stopped playing when the song-scroll started.  And iTunes memory had soared to 500 MB, then 600 ... before I stopped the application.

  • Can i retreive my pictures from my hard drive if the genius bar says it's b

Can someone please help me with this I am really bummed. my pictures and videos of my now late dog and my past 6 years are on my Powerbook G4 and the genius bar says the hard drive is broken. The weird thing was it was working fine and then I went to turn i on and it just didn't turn on. there was no crash while I was using it. Can someone recommend a service to retrieve the information or any advice on how to do it myself.
    thanks
    Sean

    sean:
Commercial data recovery services are very expensive and unless your data is extremely valuable to you, it may not make sense economically. If you would like to pursue that avenue you can do a Google search for data recovery or something like that and you will come up with some of them. There are a number of utilities that will recover data from sometimes seemingly dead HDDs. Here are three of them:
    FileSalvage
    DataRescue II
    Virtual Lab
All three of these offer demo versions, which you can download and see if they find the files for which you are looking. If one of them seems to locate them, you can purchase it online and download it, or buy the software on CD and proceed to rescue your data. Dr. Smoke's FAQ Data Recovery offers helpful advice on how to do this.
Please do post back with further questions or comments.

  • I didn't make an appointment at the genius bar, why am i getting this email?

You are scheduled for a Genius Bar appointment.
    What: Mac
When: Friday, February 17, 2012 at 4:30 PM
    Where: Apple Store, Christiana Mall
Please be sure to check in when you arrive. Any Apple Store employee will be happy to assist you.
We look forward to seeing you.
    Your Apple Store team,
    Christiana Mall
P.S. It's now even easier to make an Apple Store reservation with the Apple Store app for iPhone and iPod touch.
Download the Apple Store app now
    Apple Store,
    Christiana Mall
    Add this to your calendar
If you are no longer able to attend this session, pleasecancel or reschedule your reservation.
    Get directions to the store
I don't live anywhere near Delaware. I didn't book any appointment (yet) at the genius bar.
this is very weird because at first I thought it was some glitch where someone typed their email wrong and sent it
to mine accidently, but it even uses my name. why is this happening? didn't someone hack into my account?
the reason i am concerned is that could someone use my applecare if they registered with my apple id?

Somebody at scheduling incorrectly typed your email address instead of the intended address. For example the email should have gone to [email protected] and they typed [email protected] The error could have been as simple as a single character mistyped.
    There is nothing to do.

  • 13" Air has required SMC reset twice due to weird behavior (fan, backlight)

Note: MacOS version is really 10.6.7 plus Supplemental Update for the 13.3" MacBook Air.
My MacBook Air 13.3" 2.13 GHz/4GB/256GB, purchased in late November 2010, has twice now started acting weirdly after I installed MacOS 10.6.7 Supplemental Update. Resetting the SMC ( http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964 ) solves the problem, but I'm getting worried because it's happened twice now in a few days.
    Symptoms:
Even though I closed the lid with MacOS running, putting the machine to sleep, it either refuses to wake from sleep, forcing me to hold the power button to force it to reset, or it automatically performs a cold start and boot when I open the lid.
When I turn the machine on, the screen backlight is turned to maximum, regardless of previous setting.
When I turn the machine on, the fan(s) start running at full speed, regardless of temperature or load.
When I turn the machine on, it lingers for a long time at the gray screen before the screen turns blue and MacOS loads.
When MacOS has booted, the menu bar displays a battery icon with an X inside it. When I enter System Profiler and click Power, it reports that there is no battery installed. It also reports that the machine is connected to an external power source, even if that's not the case. It does not identify the external power source.
When I connect the external power adapter to the machine, the light on the connector does not come on (no light at all, neither amber nor green).
When I perform a shutdown, the machine will power off. However, handling the machine (with the lid closed the entire time) will repeatedly cause the fan to come on for a few seconds at full speed, then stop.
Resetting the SMC will fix these problems and cause the machine to perform normally after the reset. However, after leaving the machine sleeping for approx. 12 hours after a few hours' use after the first reset, the problem reappeared and the machine cold booted when I opened the lid, forcing me to shut it down and perform another SMC reset.
I'm worried this problem was either caused by the Update to 10.6.7, the Supplemental Update to 10.6.7 for the 13.3" MacBook Air, by an unrelated firmware bug or of course by hardware problems.
Anyone else out there with the same problem/symptoms? Anyone care to venture a guess as to what the problem is?
    Thanks,
    Gunnar

    Hi,
I have an update so I thought I would share in case any other users are experiencing a similar problem.
I made an appointment with the Genius Bar at the Apple Store.
I went in and they ran a thorough diagnostic check on my Macbook Air and determined that the sensors were indeed faulty - several were providing no information "No reading" instead of providing a temperature. Thus, the Air was unaware of the temperature across multiple components.
Despite the laptop being outside the 12 Month Manufacturer Warranty, the Apple Store determined that it was covered under warranty through Australian Consumer Law - the laptop is now in for a complete repair under warranty at no cost to myself.
    I couldn't be happier.

  • Weird MAC Crash; anyone who can decipher the log for me?

My Macbook Pro (mid 2009) with a recently clean installed Mountain Lion experienced a weird crash. I have never had one like this: suddenly the screen turns white and informs that the computer has been restarted due to a problem. As I restart, the log below pops up.
I had several software running behind: Safari 6.0.2, VLC media player, Microsoft Mac Outlook, Soulseek Mac, and Text Edit.
I have no idea how to decipher this or where to identify the problem. Is it a virus? (I have firewall ON) Or worse: is my hard disk dying?
Any help in troubleshooting this appreciated!!
    Many thanks!!

That panic was not caused by third-party software. If it's happened only once, and is not repeated in at least a few thousand hours of use, a reasonable choice would be to ignore it. Machines don't work perfectly. They never will.
If the problem is recurrent, the possibilities are (1) a damaged OS X installation; (2) a fault in a peripheral device, if any; (3) an internal hardware fault; and (4) an obscure bug in OS X.
You can rule out the first two possibilities by reinstalling the OS and testing with non-essential peripherals disconnected and aftermarket expansion cards removed, if applicable. Sometimes a clean reinstallation (after erasing the startup volume) may solve a problem that isn't solved by reinstalling in place, without erasing.
If you've recently upgraded the memory, reinstall the original memory and see whether there's any improvement. Be careful not to touch the gold contacts on the memory modules when handling them. If necessary, clean them with a mild solvent such as rubbing alcohol.
The Apple Hardware Test, though generally unreliable, will sometimes detect a fault. A negative test can't be depended on. Run the extended version of the test.
In the category of obscure bugs, reports suggest that FileVault may trigger kernel traps under some unknown conditions. Most, though not all, of these reports seem to involve booting from an aftermarket SSD. If those conditions apply to you, try deactivating FileVault.
Otherwise, make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested. You may have to leave it there for several days. There isn't much point in doing this unless you can reproduce the panic, or if you can't, it happens often enough that it's likely to be repeated at the store. Otherwise you may be told that nothing is wrong.
Print the first page of the panic report and bring it with you.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you know how to restore, and you have at least  two independent backups.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

  • My experience with the white 3g and genius bar(apple support).

I bought my white iphone 3g 2 weeks after the release. 2 weeks later i notices a couple of hairline fractures on the case. One between the screen and headphone jacks and another between the charge/pc plug in and screen.
I did some searching and found it was a common problem and people were upset about it. I didn't mind so much since it was barely noticeable and did not affect the phone. I used my phone everyday for work, school, and personnel. I had the same experience everyone else had with it slowing down on the contacts and the typing coming to a near halt.
I was grateful when apple released a firmware update to address these issues. I'm an understanding person who understands that early adopting can have its drawbacks.
So back to the problems I had.
About 3 weeks ago my phone started doing something really weird. I was walking to class and the thing would vibrate every couple of second. I took it out of my pocket and it stopped. I thought there is no way i was hitting the toggle switch to silent. So after handling it for a few seconds, I noticed that it would go into silent and right back out when ever I put small pressure the case in the back. Having to go to class, I just put it in my book bag and ignored it for now. After class I took it out and it continue to do this. I did a hard reset and it still did it. So weird. So I carried on and came home that night. The next morning it had stopped bugging out. So I thought no more about it.
About 4 days after this my phone starting really going crazy. It would go on and off with no touch at all. I would shut off all together and come back on. Volume would go up and down for no reason. After about an hour of doing this I took it the ATT store, even though I knew they couldn't do anything for it. The ATT rep was puzzled to as it continued to do this.
I called and made an appointment at the Apple Store in Knoxville TN with the Genius guys. Since Knoxville is a 2 hour drive and I went to school and worked I made the appointment for Sunday. After leaving the ATT store and going home to bed the problem ceased that night. The next morning was Sunday so I canceled my appointment, as I did not want to drive 2 hours oneway if the phone was working fine.
This weekend I went down to GA to visit family. Today, on the way back I stopped at the Apple Store. Even though I didn't have an appointment I spoke with a rep and he said they would work me in since I don't live close by. After waiting for about 45 mins they had a slot open up.
I explained to the genius tech the problems the phone was having. As he looked over it he saw a hairline fracture on the back just beside the apple symbol about an inch long. I never noticed it. Apparently the case had been putting pressure on a circuit board causing some weird things to happen.
He promptly pulled out a brand new iphone and put my sim card it it. After a couple of minutes updating the new phone and clearing the old one of data, I was on my way.
So I guess what I'm saying is that I'm glad Apple is stepping up and doing the right thing. They continue to work on the os, apple store, and provide great in store support.
Two thumbs up for the Knoxville Apple Store
    -Jeremiah

Serial numbers starting with 5K are white box only. They could be refurbished or new, but are coming from a China plant according to the serial number checker.
I received a 5K white box replacement Friday, and its perfect. So if it was refurbished or new, this factory is doing a good job with them.
