Genre list in Itunes

Hi Guys,
I've always hated i-tunes, but now i have to use it as it reorganised my music folder (forgot to untick that box, doowww)after i used it to reformat my IPOD.
Anyways, I am a DJ aswell and sorting by Genre helps me acess tunes quickly.
My porblem is whenever i sort my music and type a new genre it is then auto added to the list of available genres later on to help me categorize my music. This is usually a help, but apple added and some genres i added (some that i don't want to use anymore) remain in the list.
This list of available genres has now become too long, and hinders my speed when having to wade through the list.
I really want to just delete some of these genres out of the available list to choose from to make it shorter, does anybody know how to do this?

The default genres cannot be deleted but any you added can be easily removed from the list. Look through your library, sort by genre is easiest, to find the genre you don't want in list. Now change the genre tag for those files to something else. The genre list will not have that genre anymore.

  • How do you edit the genre list in iTunes

My genre list has become very random and I want to reduce it to the general Blues Jazz Rock Pop Classical, can anyone help?

iTunes has a set list of genres programmed into it.  Other genres are added and deleted as you edit the genre fields of files.

This is an older set of directions for editing the genres included in iTunes. I don't know if it still works with newer versions, and make sure you back up your computer before doing editing of this kind because unpredictable things can happen.

  • Anyone figure out how to edit the genre list in itunes yet?

I've searched the topic list to answer my question and have found some threads on this subject but all were from some time back.
I was just wondering if there is anything new on this. I understand there are factory preset genres. I understand how to add and remove my own. But I want to nuke apple's factory preset genres so my list is more concise and pertinent to my own tastes.
Another reason I want to edit it could just be because they say I cant!

I am not sure if this is what you want, if you click on the genre field of an individual track, you can edit it. If you make it a new genre, it will appear in the genre list.

  • How do I edit the Genre list?

I want to edit the list of Genre choices. Is there any way to do it besides editing every file individually?

The genre list is generated from what is in your library.
You can add genres to the list by editing a song and making up a genre for it. I have done this for my Irish music. After changing the genre in the song the list had the new entry.
If you have genres that are duplicates or look like duplicates, for example typos, you need to edit the files with those genres.
Easiest way to find files by genre is with the browser view turned on in iTunes.

  • Multiple Genres lists on ipod

I like to listen to my music by genre. In my library I have assigned each song a specific genre. However when I purchased music from itunes, it created a duplicate genre list on my ipod. For example, I have two lists for children's music. One has my old music, and another one for the new additions. How di I combine then into one.

Please help! My husband and I each have our own ipod and we are sharing the itunes software on one computer. We have the "library" with all the music and then we each have created our own playlists that automatically updates when we connect our ipods. Recently, something happened and now when I change the genre in my playlist, the exact same thing changes in my husband's playlist even though he does not want to change it. There used to be duplicate songs in the library - one for alternative (my genre) and one for pop (my husband's genre) now there is only one and neither of us can categorize our music the way we want because everytime we change one, it changes in the other. Please help we are new users.

  • Corrupt genre list

When I browse through my library I see the 16 genres listed that I use. The menu for selecting a genre shows over 50 genres, several of which look like someone's attempt to make a keyword list.
How can the genre list be cleaned out so it only reflects the music in my library?

I noticed that podcasts were the source of the 13 remaining entries that shouldn't be there
Select the podcasts, right click - get info and change the genre to what you want.
i don't think that "techno house trance dance remix" and such are any form of genra.
Why not? Sounds like one to me.
If you don't like it, change it.
No idea what you mean in your 2nd paragraph.
if you mean to say it should like text tags then i would have to complain about the missing 2000+ entries.
If you are referring to why doesn't iTunes have ALL genre possible, it has about 20 defaults. Any other items you add with a different genre will be added to the genre list.
Apple should take the time now, before it is too late, to correct issues like this that effect all users
I don't see an issue with genre.
Anyway, you can send feedback to Apple here -> http://www.apple.com/feedback/itunesapp.html
    Good luck!

  • Browsing Sub-Genres in the iTunes Store - Is it possible?

    Hello,
I find it pretty confusing and difficult to drill down to a sub-genre. Perhaps it is something that I am missing or a preference that I have neglected to unable. But some content is really hard find, unless I use the specific track name or artist name.
Ideally, I am looking to do something like this:
    - Enter the "electronic" genre in the iTunes store (which is so random and huge)
    - Get a list of sub-genres like (trance, drum n bass, house, indie, dub step) etc...
    - Drill down into one of the sub genres like "trance"
    - Then, see all the sub-genres for trance like (melodic, vocal, progressive, epic) etc...
Is this type of navigation possible in the iTunes store? If so, I would love to figure out how to use it.
    Thanks!

You may also wish to try out some specialty stores such as Juno Downloads which lets you directly browse to sub-genres of trance.

  • Delete a genre under "get info" genre list

Under "Get Info", how do I remove a genre from the list of genres? The list has become large and unwieldy...!

Your answer shows how to remove a genre that shows up on an ipod. I believe that the question being asked is how to remove a genre from the pulldown list in itunes.
At any rate, I'd love to know if there is a way to remove genres from the pulldown list on itunes, assuming that there are no songs listed under the genre that I want to delete.
It is my understanding that a couple of years ago, this was not possible. If that is still the case, does that apply to just the genre names that come in the list or also with genres that I added, but now want to delete?

  • I have orphaned voice memos on my iPhone5 and cannot delete. Listed in iTunes but not on my iPhone's Voice Memo app.

When I upgraded from my iPhone 4 to iPhone 5, a bunch of voice memos were orphaned.
What this means is that when I connect my iPhone to iTunes, I see the voice memos.
They are listed in iTunes under my iPhone directories  "Voice Memo" and in "Music".
    But I cannot delete these.
When I go to my iPhone, the Voice memo app has changed (ok) and you can see there
are no voice memos. It appears that they are orphaned from the voice memo app.
So the voice memos are in my phone somewhere.
How can I delete them or export them or something with them?
I can't play them except on iTunes. They don't show up in Music in my iPhone.
    Thanks for your Help

  • Apple TV won't connect to iTunes and does not show up in my devices list in iTunes.

My older model Apple TV won't connect to iTunes and does not show up in my devices list in iTunes.  I have two Apple TVs in my house and I can't imagine that this is part of the problem but I mention it just in case.  My other Apple TV is brand new and it connects to iTunes just fine.  I've tried most of the "fixes" and one says to Force Sync but I can't since Apple TV isn't in my device list.  Another "Fix" said to Navigate the Apple TV to Settings --> Downloads --> Check for Downloads, but when I tried that there was no option for "Downloads" under the Settings Heading.  I'm at a loss.  Please help.  Could this be an issue with too many authorized devices?  We have three iPads, two iPhones, laptop, desktop, two Apple TVs, and an iPod and most of them are syncing the same music playlists and whatnot...  have I run out of rope?

hi, just posting to everyone in general..its not you, or your apple tv, it is itunes.
ok, ive had the exact same issues for weeks now, as with everyone i had done the lastest upgrade and no longer could see/sync my gen 1 appleTV.........so, i removed the upgrade and went back to the prev version, even though it was showing in my prefs under appleTV, it still wouldnt show in the side panel under devices....i gave up.
This week i was determined to get it to work!  So i started from scratch, totally removed itunes and started back with version 9 and upgrade each version from there, i had no luck, ic clicked find appleTvs but it wouldnt....however i just d/l version 9.2.0.61 and BINGO!. No sooner has it opened and up popped the side panel devices list, showing my appleTV..all ready to be synced etc. I immediately panicked of course haha..and set it all up and its working perfectly.
...Only catch now is that this older version will not be compatiable with my iphone, which i do keep music on...seems we cant win. grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr   this will be the same for all the latest apple products.
Apple needs to allow more than one version of itunes per pc OR perhaps they could get their act together and include all of the millions of APPLETV GEN1  owners in there latest upgrading..after all, THEY made the product and THEY do sell the movies/tv shows, perhaps they could stop making all the upgrade all about the music only!......on which i might add why not incluse movies/tv shows in icloud! yet another upgrade that should be included in the APPLETV  GERNERATION 1!..yes we do  still exist!
at the very least, im happy ive managed to get all my movies etc onto the apple tv, where ill keep them and from now on d/l directly onto my apple tv. I usually d/l to my laptop and then send them to the appletv but while trying to get all this sorted i did a test, i d/l a movie  using my appletv hoping it would somehow let itunes "find" it and getting it to show up in my device list, but it didnt work,  however it did sync/send the movie to itunes..  so at least i could save a back up copy.
good luck trying, as i said this has been weeks and this is the only solution ive found so far....and going through these forums its obviouse its itunes thats the issue, NOT Our apple tvs.

  • 1st gen Apple TV not in devices list in iTunes

My 1st generation AppleTV is no longer showing in the devices list in iTunes on my Mac Pro.  I have read several pieces of advice and performed the following long list of actions but I am still stuck and unable to sync my Apple TV.  I hope someone has a new suggestion for me?
The AppleTV has had the computer removed from the connections setting.  It has been rebooted and left on the connect a new computer screen with the numerical password visible.
The AppleTV can be seen visible in the iTunes of my Macbook Air running 10.8.3 and the iTunes version is 11.0.2.  I have not 'clicked to setup' since my main library is on my Mac Pro that used to sync.  I can ping appletv.local from my macbook air succesfully which returns an IP address.
My MacPro is running OSX 10.7.5 and iTunes 11.0.2 and one day the device failed to show in the devices menu.  I cannot ping appletv.local from my Mac Pro but I can ping the IP address returned from the ping on my Macbook Air.
At first I removed the device from iTunes preferences and removed the computer from the AppleTV which allowed me to see the AppleTV on my Macbook Air but not my Mac Pro.
Secondly I used AppZapper to uninstall iTunes and reinstalled from a fresh download as r4ecommended here -> http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-10329494-263.html  I also used Pacifist to reinstall the Apple Mobile Device Service after removing the service as per the instructions here -> http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1747  My iTunes library is back as it was but my other devices were originally missing until I connected them via USB to re-enable the wifi sync.
I can see my shared libraries between my MacPro and my Macbook Air.  I can also use Airdrop between them and can connect between them as usual.  I have disabled the firewall on my Mac Pro just in case and I have no VPN or antivirus software that blocks any communication.
My network setup is a little unusual since I have my ISP router as the DHCP assigner connected to an Airport Extreme base station that acts in bridge mode to distribute a wifi network across my home.  I then have a powerline adapter connected to the airport base station to send network around my home to places where wifi is weak.  My macbook air connects to the wifi.  My MacPro connects via a switch in my office to a 2nd powerline adapter.  My AppleTV connects via a 3rd powerline adapter and can see the internet fine (it plays youtube videos for example).  None of the network devices have any ports blocked on them and since the Macbook Air connects to the AppleTV as expected but the MacPro does not then I do not think it is network related.
So I can only assume there is something wrong with my MacPro being unable to recognise my AppleTV as an AppleTV rather than just another device on my network.  Anyone else got any ideas of what to try on my MacPro to get it to recognise the AppleTV?

I am still experiencing this issue - can anyone help?
Since writing the above replies I have also tried to downgrade iTunes to 10.7 via these instructions -> http://arstechnica.com/apple/2013/03/how-to-downgrade-from-itunes-11-to-version- 10-7-on-your-mac/ but that did not work.  iTunes worked fine but the AppleTV was still not in my devices list on my Mac Pro

  • Does anyone know how to get the ATV1 to appear in device list in iTunes?

I have been trying for hours to get my Apple TV to appear in the device list in iTunes. Every time iTunes updates I lose the connection, however, this time it will not reconnect. I have read through many of the questions/responses and tried almost all of them but nothing has worked. The Apple TV is connected to the network and can access the iTunes store without issue.
I just purchased $300 in iTunes cards so that I could download my duaghters favorite shows and now I have no way of playing them on my TV. I have a PC running Windows Vista, if that matters.
I would appreciate any help/advice that can be offered.

go to the settings menu on the appletv
    unpair chain with the computer
let it do it's unparing stuff
    repair with the computer
type in the code on the computer
let it sync as it see fit

  • I have music on iPod touch that isn't listed in iTunes, can't seem to "manage" the content

Sheesh. I know it's supposed to be simple & intuitive, but I can't quite figure some things out.  Now, I may have reloaded iTunes since I had to rebuild my PC.  Fortunately, my library of music - mainly from CDs - was saved on a backup.
    1.  I have some music that isn't quite listed in iTunes
Creedence Clearwater Revival album Chronicle Volume 1 also shows up as Chronicle, Vol.1 on the iPod
but it shows up only as Chronicle, Vol. 1  in my Music Library.  How did it duplicate itself and how do I get rid of the duplicates?
note that these duplicates do not appear in iTunes, so clicking on Display Duplicates does not find them.
    2.  I cannot remove the rogue versions of songs either directly from the iPod or from iTunes
    3.  I cannot adjust the columns or sort order when viewing my iPod's Music in iTunes
    4.  Sync is not checked for any of the categories in iTunes
if I check the Sync box for music, it states it will wipe out my music and replace it with my library.  My whole library won't fit on my 8 GB iPod.  How do I pick and choose what goes to the iPod.  Do I really need to wipe out the contents of my iPod first?
    5.  Last question - Can I assign the album art that was ripped from my CDs to the albums/songs imported from My Music in Windows to iTunes?
So I'm a bit frustrated but very open to solutions.  My iPod touch is maxed out and I want to adjust what content - pictures, apps, music & playlists only - gets loaded on the iPod.
    Help!  Help! Thanks!!

    - From your description you did something to iTunes on the computer such that the iPod sees ythe iTunes library as a new library.  That is why you are getting the message about erasing when you try to sync.  Yu can, as you are doing, managing music with the computer since you can do that among different conputer.  See:
Using iPhone, iPad, or iPod with multiple computers
    - If all music, apps, sysnced photos are on the computer you  need to:
--- Make a backup of the iPod by connecting the iPod to the computer and right clicking on the iPod under Devices in iTunes and selecing Backup and then restore the iPod from that backup.
    - You can transfer iTunes purchases to the computer by:
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to a computer
    - You can transfer non-iTunes purchaed music by using one of the third-party programs discussed here. Some of those may also do synced photos.
