Sorry that i can4t help you but i4am interested in database mirroring too. I tried to implement it with advanced replication, but this is bullshit and don4t work and is not to admin on a large number of tables with unknown indexes.
So my question to you is:
WHAT IS A geo-mirrored standby database?
Is it a special product?

I'm in the process of implementing a data guard standby system. To make this system simpler to admin, I want to run the standby database in NOARCHIVELOG mode. This standby is used only as a mirror of production (to be copied to a 3rd site for separate user activity) and will never be switched to active mode. Maintaining another set of archive logs seems to be redundant to me and another point of failure, so I want to disable archiving. I wanted to ask if any of the DG experts on the forums have ever had experience with this? Does anyone know if this is recommended? I've searched the Oracle Data guard documentation online... it says that the primary obviously needs to be in archive mode, but I'm not seeing anything specific about the standby. Please let me know if anyone has experience with this.

Right at the first of the year they wanted to work on our Primary server room ( Power ). What I did was switchover to the Standby but I kept log_archive_dest_state_2 on the new primary set to DEFER. Then I shutdown
all the databases at the Primary site. At the end of work two days later I started the databases at the Primary site in standby mode. Switched log_archive_dest_state_2 to ENABLE. When the databases were back in SYNC
I did another switchover and it was done. I used TAF and none of the users even noticed.

Creating a standby control file for cloning a standby database

Hi
I am in the process of trying to document the cloning of a standby database. I am trying to amalgamate three different documents - one for a normal clone, one for the creation of a SB database, and the other a formal Oracle document - the Business Continuity doc.
Among the several things that confuse me, is the issue of creating (or not) a standby control file.
I am not doing any kind of data file deletion / copying from source to target, as the SB database is updated all day with data file changes. I am doing a complete copying over of the APPL_TOP and techstacks.
My question then, is this: should I be worried about creating a standby control file? I am told by our Senior here that "you can get away with not doing it", which sounds like too much of a risk to me.
I am under a bit of pressure for this and I am not 100% sure about certain issues (see my other post for knowing how many DATA_TOPS we have on the SB, for instance).

Do you already have a Standby running ? (then it may be using a standby controlfile).
Yes. And there is already a standby control file there. It seems to me, that if the data (logs) transfers are done each minute or whatever between source and SB, and the SB is a copy of the db, then we dont need to worry about any kind of data files, since they should be identical. The only things I will need to change are the configuration files like the ifile in both dbs and tns_names, listener, tnsnames.ora, and the init.ora.
b. Are you creating a document about the process of creating standby from production ? If you plan to use DataGuard, you will need a standby controlfile. Otherwise , it depends on how you configure the standby.
No. I am creating a doc for how to clone from Production to a SB environment. A reason behind this is that the Apps side of the SB is about 9 patches behind the Production box, and we need to update it. I believe this is the main reason for doing this.
c. Just to check : You are NOT using Storage Mirroring -- ie D.R. ?
No, no DR on this environment.

Best Way to setup a disaster Recovery site for a logical standby database

I have a logical standby DB (L1DB) as a reporting db on the same machine as the primary (P1DB). We are planning on building a disaster recovery site with similar hardware and potentially have disk mirroring of atleast the redo log files.
The DR site can hold an additional physical standby (S1DB) for the primary (P1DB). I am trying to understand what would be the best way to setup the Disaster Recovery site for the L1DB logical stdby. Ideally, when the disaster happens, and I no longer have P1DB and L1DB, I should be able to switch to S1DB as the new primary. But how do I setup to have a L2DB that takes the place of L1DB and has its contents and can be setup as a logical standby of S1DB?

If you already setup one logical standby, then you know how it works, so not sure what question you are asking ?
Personally I would setup L2DB as a standby of the original primary P1DB. Having downstream standby databases complicates things, and adds additional lag between primary transaction time and L2DB apply.

The new version will be windows 2003 enterprise edition 64 bits
This difference in windows version between primary and standby servers can cause a problem in the synchronization between primary and standby databases ??
What do you recommend? Have both servers in the same windows version?

There is no issue with database synchronization as long as SQL Server is of same version.<o:p></o:p>

OS(Windows version) has no restriction for using SQL server 2005 database mirroring/log shipping. You can go with upgrade without any worries on SQL
database side.<o:p></o:p>

DR Server: Standby Database

I need to Design a DR Server for my Client.
I have decided to go for a hot Standby Database.
I am very new to DB2. Are there any Documents that can help me on designing the procedure for this. If you can let me know the steps/commands in detail that would also be helpful.
I have read the DB2 Operations guide available in SAP Marketplace which gives a high level Strategy.
1. On Source System create a Snapshot of the DB. What exactly is a Snapshot? How to create a Split Image?
2.On the Target (DR Server) create the db after mounting the split image.
Can you please help me in understanding how to aplly/execute this.

Hostname for Standby Database

Hi All,
We are setting up standby database for MSSQL2008 in windows 2008 R2 environment. For our customer scenario, their infra team insist of using log shipping to transfer log file and file replication to to replication SAP files.
Therefore, i've a question in mind.. Do we need to maintain identical hostname for primary and standby database? fyi, they have cluster their primary and DR host.
If different hostname, virtual hostname is used, basically we can just drop the primary host from the domain and change that respective hostname, virutal hostname and ip for the DR host during swing over? If that's the case, is the any other action we need to perform? Do we need to change any registry? I believe SAP profiles and etc are identical due to the file replication.
If same hostname is maintained for both primary and standby host, i believe we might need to isolate standby host from the network and change the entries in DNS or routing table during swing over?
Any feedback and good suggestion are mostly welcome and much appreciate.

Hi,
when the primary and the standby database server are on the same network, they have to have a different hostname.
Is the SAP Ci on the same Cluster as the DB (active-active Cluster) ?
Is the SAP System itself a cluster ?
You have three different scenarios here:
- only the DB cluster is failing
- only the CI Cluster/System is failing
- both systems are failing
For the first case you can
- either change the profiles of the primary SAP system to point to the new DR DB Host
- or define a AD alias in beforehand, to which you connect normally.
Then you have to change the alias only to point the SAP System to the new DR DB Host
For the second case you can
- change the profiles of the DR SAP System to point to the primary DB Host
- or define a AD alias in beforehand, to which you connect normally. When you start
the DR SAP Systen then, it will connect to the primary DB Host
For the third case you can
- change the profiles of the DR SAP System to point to the seondary DB Host
- or define a AD alias in beforehand, to which you connect normally.
In the DR case you have to change the Alias in the AD and then you can
start the DR SAP Systen. It will connect to the primary DB Host
Changing the virtual or physical hostname during DR swing over is not a good option,
as you have too many side effects. Using an Alias is much easier and faster.
Using Database Mirroring (SQL 2005 or higher) will eliminate case 1, as the SAP
system can swing over to the DR side automatically in the DR case.

Creating a new schema in a Logical Standby Database

Hi All,
I am experimenting with logical standby databases for the purpose of reporting, and have not been able to create a new schema in the logical standby database - one of the key features of logical standbys.
I have setup primary and logical standby databases, and they seem to be running just fine - changes are moved from the primary to the standby and queries on the standby seem to run ok.
However, If I try to create a new schema on the logical standby, that does not exist on the primary, I get "ORA-01031: insufficient privileges" errors when I try to create new objects.
Show below are the steps I have taken to create the new schema on the logical standby. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Great details, but what I don't see is how you connect in RMAN.

I am facing issue in creating the standby database from Active database using RMAN and getting the below issue after i executed the duplicate command.

Pl do not post duplicates - Issue in configuring Standby Database from Active database in 11g by RMAN

Logical Standby Database in NOARCHIVE Mode

Hi,
I have configured a Logical Standby Database for Reporting purposes. A Physical Standby Database is running for MAA. i.e. in case of Role Transition (switch/Failover) the Physical Stdby Db will get the role of the Primary.
The logical standby database is creating a lot of Archive Redologs files, nearly every minute. Redolog files are 50MB and there is no work done in db during the time. I'm NOT using Standby Redolog files.
Is there a need for logical standby database to be in NOARCHIVELOG mode? The Primary is definatley in ARCHIVELOG mode.

hi,
well there are two things to the above:-
1. there was an archive file nearly every minute:
this is due to a db recovery. for some reason, the db was in inconsistent state, after a sudden shutdownof the OS. I was on a test environment, on windows vista, unfortunately. unimportant ... a reboot solved it.
2. Logical standby db in NOARCHIVE MODE when setup for the purpose of Reporting.
As long as the MAA configured for the primary db, such as physical standby db, and a second, the logical standby db setup purely for the purpose of reporting, which then can run with NOARCHIVELOG mode, after converting the physical standby db to logical.
logical standby db uses Streams architecture, so this method brings cost, time and performance advantages to the customer.

Logs are not getting applied in the standby database

I tried registering and recovering the logs but it also failed..

Error while trying to open physical standby database - (DATA GUARD)

Hi Everyone,
I have problems in opening the database of the physical standby in read- write mode/ read only mode. I have a primary server which is running on 2 node RAC and the standby on a seperate single server being used as DR. I recently got this server and my aim was to isolate the standby server from primary server and perform few test. As it has never been tested even once.

ORA-16004: backup database requires recovery
ORA-01152: file 1 was not restored from a sufficiently old backup
ORA-01110: data file 1: '+DATA/dprod/datafile/system01.dbf'
Parameters :
log_archive_dest_2 string SERVICE=PROD1 LGWR ASYNC VALID

Steps tried so far:
Changed log_archive_dest_2 = DEFER on both the primary nodes
Standby :
startup nomount
alter database mount standby database;
alter database recover managed standby database disconnect;
alter database recover managed standby database cancel;
alter database open/readonly (tried both)
Same error.
On Primary:
SQL> select max(sequence#) from v$log_history;

on Standby:

There is a delay of 20 minutes before the logs get applied. which has been intentional set by team.

I tried log switch multiple times in primary database i saw that its getting highlighted in standby database.

Not able to get data of primary in standby database (configured dataguard)

Hi all, I configured dataguard in my local system, i ve a few qsns (as i am new, ve patience)
1) scn differs wrt primary in standby (i checked, 1day difference), how to make scn same?
2)i created a table in primary, its not refelecting in standby, (below i ve pasted alertlog entries)

SCN can be differ in standby and it can be behind to primary based on the backup you have restored. Of course by performing recovery you can synchronize standby with primary database. You can use incremental backups for standby using link http://www.oracle-ckpt.com/rman-incremental-backups-to-roll-forward-a-physical-standby-database-2/

ORA-27041: unable to open fileFirst check whether those files are exist in that location or not and if file names are different other than primary then rename file locations. Also check the permissions on the folder/files.
