Geotagging in new Photos app

Hi All,
I recently upgraded to the new Photos app and realised that there doesn't seem to be a way to add location to a photo's metadata (geotagging). Can any confirm if this is true?
Also any work arounds (e.g. other applications etc ) would be helpful. Thanks

It's true. The only workaround is to do your geotagging before import.

And offer feedback on missing features.

  • Editing/Adding geotags within new Photos app?

Does anybody know of a way to edit or add the geotags of photos inside the Photos App? This used to be possible with iPhoto.
I have found plenty of third party apps which can edit geotags, but they all require removing the photo from Photos App, then importing it back in once the geotag is edited.

I have found plenty of third party apps which can edit geotags, but they all require removing the photo from Photos App, then importing it back in once the geotag is edited.
Until editing location data will be added to Photos, use the third-party tools to add the Geotags before you import the photos to your Photos library. This way, the locations will be added to the original image files before you start editing in Photos.
For example, you could first import your photos to iPhoto, do the things that Photos not yet supports, like batch changing the titles or captions and adding places, and then export the tagged photos to a folder on your Desktop and import it to Photos,
If you keep the if library for "tagging" on a second disk, you would automatically have a backup of the originals, which we should have anyway.
iPhoto should still be fully functional, even with Photos installed, if you have updated to iPhoto 9.6.1.

  • How to add missing Geotags in the new Photos App?

I have explored the new Photos App extensively but have thus far been unable to find any way to edit/replace/add/remove Geotags to photos that are missing them.  With iPhoto, it was very easy to copy a Geotag from an iPhone-Shot photo to a photo taken with my Canon DSLR.  In fact, I got into the habit of always snapping at least 1 picture with my iPhone to save the location whenever i'd go out shooting with my DSLR so I could later apply the Geotag to the rest of the photos when I got home.  Did Apple remove this critical feature from the new Photos App?

  • In the new Photo app 'Projects' will not stay open

    Hi
In the new Photo app. released last week, I can not get the 'projects' to remain open.  It just crashes and closes and actually now , since this afternoon I can not open any of it without it crashing.
    i have a mid 2011 iMac running Yosemite 10.10.3.
i have a few photo books, slideshows and cards in the projects if this helps.
If anyone can help I would really appreciate it, even if its just so I can access the photos.
    Many thanks.

Many people are reporting the project->crash problem.  To the best of my knowledge, there is no fix for it.
For some folks, a temporary workaround is to select View->Sidebar and access the projects *individually*.
Hopefully this will work for you, fairymoo!
Apple's Meta-Problem: Inexplicably, "Photos" is *NOT* listed as an Application Community on the top-level web-site "https://discussions.apple.com/welcome" ... thus plenty of folks (including the poster and me too) have been unable even to find the right community for seeking/posting solutions.
Conclusion: not a smooth roll-out, Apple!   Not least, why is the Photos Community so difficult to locate?

  • How to use iphoto after yosemite 10.10.3, that have disabled it for new photo app?

My iMac did install new yosemite 10.10.3 telling me that new Photo app was "best ever" but now I can't open old iPhoto library because it was in old format of iPhoto library and the iPhoto app was now unusable because new Photo app. Can you help me!!??

and the iPhoto app was now unusable because new Photo app. Can you help me!!??
Which version of iPhoto do you have installed?  With Yosemite, MacOS X 10.10.3, you need to update iPhoto to version 9.6.1.  Only that version is fully compatible.
Apple stopped selling iPhoto, but anyone who bought iPhoto from the AppStore or updated it to a version sold at the App Store (iPhoto 9.4.5 or later) will be able to reinstall from the App Store by downloading from the Purchases tab.
If you have any version of iPhoto, that has been updated from the AppStore and is associated with your Apple ID, try to reinstall from the "Purchases" page.
Unhide iPhoto, if it is hidden on your Purchases page (See this link: Mac App Store: Hiding and unhiding purchases)
Trash the incompatible iPhoto version, but don't empty the Trash.
Reload your Purchases page at the App Store with ⌘R
    Then download from that page.
The step "Trash the incompatible iPhoto version, but don't empty the Trash."  must not be skipped. If Spotlight sees a version of iPhoto installed, the AppStore will try to update instead of reinstall, which does not work.

  • Using the new Photos app on multiple devices - confusion!

I find the recent way ios/Photos handles photos quite confusing. I am not too concerned about not having a Camera Roll, but seeing how not having this creates strange behavior when editing/deleting photos, I can see how the Camera Roll is definitely necessary or the whole thing needs revamped to handle things better.
    Here's my set up:
    iMac with iPhoto
iPhone 5s with the new Photos app
iPad Mini with the new Photos app
The one things I DO like is that whenever I take a photo (or upload in the case of my iMac), the photo is duplicated across all devices. That means I could take a photo on my iPhone and then edit it on my iPad Mini which has a bigger screen. (Well, so I thought..but read below.) Yes, you could do this with Photo Stream, but having all photos in one place is a bit easier to remember and find. I also like that when I delete the photo on the device that I took it on, all photos on the other two devices are also deleted. Easy. Thanks.
But that is where the ease of use ends.
If I delete the photo on any other two devices (i.e. the devices that I did NOT take the photo on), it only deletes on the devices which I didn't take the photo on. In other words, it leaves the photo on the device which I originally took the photo on.
To add to the confusion... if I edit the original photo, the edits do not get duplicated to the other devices! I see the original photo on the devices with which I did NOT take the photo but the edited one is on the original device I took it on.
Let's add even MORE confusion....if I want to edit the photo on a device it was not taken on, I then get a notice that it has to be Duplicated before I can edit it. Well, okay, I do that and then edit it. However, I now have the original showing up twice on the device it was originally taken on...the original photo and the now duplicated photo--it's the EXACT same photo since no edits get carried over from the other device.
I believe all of this is because of what happened when ios 9 combined the functions of the Camera Roll and Photo Stream together. It exhibits both behaviors but since you cannot be sure which photo was taken on which device, you have less understanding what will happen when you try to delete a photo or edit it.
Here's the key headache....What happens if I want to make sure a photo is deleted from ALL my devices and I don't remember which device I took the photo on? I will have to check every device just to be sure! I can't even open up iPhoto on my Mac and delete it from the Photo Stream album because it will remain on the original device. So, I have to check all devices and also iPhoto on my Mac for good measure in case I actually uploaded a photo there--which I do since I am scanning in old photos.
Key headache #2...you end up with duplicates of the photo if you edit the photo on any device on which it was not taken on. You also get different versions of the photo. You end up not knowing which photo was the original. To be sure to have all edited photos eventually on you iMac, you'll need to sync all devices physically to iPhoto.
Who has time to track all this?
What should happen is this...all of the photos, including their edits, should sync exactly on all devices. My Recently Added should look exactly the same across all devices and carry over any edits...now that is what I would call Continuity and Handoff! But as it stands, we don't have anything close to this...is more like Pandemonium and MixUp!
This is really a mess and way too confusing to keep track of. I can only hope this get resolved when Photos on the Mac is released.

Go to the App Store and check out the Purchases List. If iPhoto is there then it will be v9.6.1
If it is there, then drag your existing iPhoto app (not the library, just the app) to the trash
Install the App from the App Store.
Sometimes iPhoto is not visible on the Purchases List. it may be hidden. See this article for details on how to unhide it.

One question often asked: Will I lose my Photos if I reinstall?
iPhoto the application and the iPhoto Library are two different parts of the iPhoto programme. So, reinstalling the app should not affect the Library. BUT you should always have a back up before doing this kind of work. Always.

  • New Photos app on a mac

    Hi everyone
I have downloaded the new "Photos" app ( replacing i photo) on my Mac
How do you make Photoshop ( in my case PSE 13 ) the default editor?
I had it set up with i photo , when I clicked edit it took the photo to PSE 13 automatically
    Thanks for your help
    Larry

You can't set anything for an external editor in Photos, at least not in the current version.
(you would have to export the image out of Photos before you can edit it in pse 13)
Your sure you don't still have iPhoto in your Applications folder?
If you do, you can still use it..

  • ICloud storage for new photos app

iI've just updated Yosemite and the new photos app is asking me to upgrade my storage, now if I do this will it upload all my photos on my iMac to the cloud including external drives connected to my iMac?

    Are you certain?
From Get started with Photos for OS X - Apple Support
"If you change your System Photo Library, the contents of this new library will be merged with the contents already in iCloud."
But presumably this merge is two-way i.e. the contents already in iCloud will then be merged into the new System Photo Library? It's not clear, but that's how I understand it.
In any case, http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/comments/announcing_powerphotos may well offer library merging in a post 1.0 release.

If Preview and Mail’s media browser don’t work, Gary, can you export all the pictures from the new iPhoto package back to folders and use an earlier copy of iPhoto such as 8.1.2?
I have both versions on my system so it may be the Mail and Preview media browsers are not accessing the new iPhoto package.  I thought they were the new version but maybe not; I see a single iPhoto Library icon and when I control-click on it it offers to show the package contents...

  • With new Photos app, I can no longer drag and drop photos into other applications as I did in the past with iPhoto.

With the new Photos app, I can no longer drag and drop photos into other applications as I did with iPhoto.  For instance, I have a photo collage app that in the past, I could just drag in the photos I wanted to include.  Now, I can DRAG the photos, but they do not DROP.  So, I have to go through the export process.  It is tedious.  What am I missing?  Where can I turn on the drag and drop feature for Photos?

YOu're not looking in the right palce. That's inside the iPhoto Application.
You need to look inside the iPhoto Library
    As I sid above:
Go to your Pictures Folder and find the iPhoto Library there

  • The New Photo App Not Syncing Properly

I've been pulling my hair out over the last week or so with the new Photo's in the iCloud and how the online database won't sync properly.
This is how I went about the upgrade.
I have a Mac Mini which has been for the past several years drawing down my family's photo's and video etc from all out devices using iPhoto. This has worked very nicely. I've been adding pictures from my stream into albums etc with about 200 or so. All files are stored locally of course in organized folder which is then back up on to a external drive.
After the latest update I opened the new Photo app and it started to convert my library over and started to upload all the photos, some 15000 pictures and a few hundred videos. I started to check my iPad and iPhone which is where I started to see problems, missing albums, missing photos, duplicates etc. Before anyone asks I emptied my trash in iPhoto before I updated as I had read about the new app pulling all the photos from trash in too.
After several days of stopping and starting my iPhone and iPad looked like it should with my albums and the correct amount of files. I checked the online iCloud Photos through my browser which also match, but I had all the old iPhoto months and daily libraries still showing despite me organizing my libraries not to group the photos in these old style albums.
At this point I also looked back on my Mac Mini to find that all the libraries had totally disappeared and there seemed to be a couple of thousand files missing, ie my ipad, iphone and online coun which is at something like 15,634 files and the Mac Mini Photo app was showing about 13,450. Plus, it was now saying uploading some 24,000 files but was in fact doing nothing.
At this point I decided to turn my main iMac on and see if I could get the databases to pull down from the iCloud to see if it matched. Three days later it's stuck at some 3200 files and saying it's still adding 15,000 files. I then went back on to my Mac Mini and started a fresh version of Photo and it's now stuck in the same state as the iMac saying it's adding file but nothing is changing.
    Please help.

How did you import the photos?
Are the missing photos perhaps referenced? Then they cannot upload to iCloud.
You can check with a smart album, if you have any photos in the library, that cannot upload to iCloud.

I have tried everything I know to retrieve the iPhoto Library app.  I detest this new Photo app, which obviously wasn't designed with photographers in mind.  I desperately need help in retrieving the old app and have not been able to do it so far.  I have gone to my app folder and tried to update my iPhoto Library.  I have gone to my trash and brought it over to my desktop and still cannot use it.  Please help!

Try this fix discovered by User photosb189:
From Finder, hold down the option key on your keyboard and click on the Go menu at the top of the screen
Select Library from the drop down menu
Then navigate to Application Support > iLifeAssetManagement > assets
Right click on the 'sub' folder and choose Compress
Drag the resulting zip file to your Desktop (as a backup)
Go to your System Preferences and choose iCloud
Turn OFF the iCloud Photos option
Go back to Library > Application Support and DELETE the iLifeAssetManagement folder
Now, in System Preferences, turn the iCloud Photos option ON
iPhoto should now be able to launch. Give it enough time to re-download your Photo Stream content. if you are missing any of your My Photo Stream photos (more than 30 days old), unzip the sub folder on your desktop and drag that into iPhoto.

  • How to batch change in new Photo app

I switched over to the new Photo app. I imported my photos from my iPhone, and then went to batch change the titles (which I use to search for specific pictures and places). I can't find an option anywhere to change anything more than one photo at a time! I uploaded over 200 pictures, I can't make modifications a photo at a time.
    Someone help me please!

    I can't make modifications a photo at a time.
    Someone help me please!
Batch change the titles in another app before you import the photos  into Photos, for example in iPhoto.
Or use keywords instead of titles. You can select multiple photos and assign a keyword to all photos at the same time from the Keyword Manager.

  • Can't open existing library with new photos app on iMac 10.10.3

I have upgraded my iMac to yosemite 10.10.3, with the new Photos app. I have been using iPhoto Library Manager to create and manage my libraries, which I store on an external hard drive.
Now, with the upgrade and new Photos app, some libraries open and I can access my photos without a problem, but other libraries don't seem to open. Instead, I get the new Photos windows with the demo slideshow, etc.  I'm worried that the photos within the libraries I'm unable to open are now gone.
Has anyone else experienced this? Any advice?

    How is the EHD formatted?
If the external hard drive is not formatted OS X Extended (journaled) Photos will not be able to open them.  Actually iPhoto requires the volume to be formatted that way also but doesn't check the format before opening.  Many users have been able to operated on EHDs that were not formatted properly for a while but eventually ended up with a damage/corrupted library.
