Geotagging photos on Symbian S60 3 FP1 - E51

Like to take snaps when I'm out riding mey bike. Getting interested in geotaginng these photos. Will be using a Nokia E51, S60 Series 3 Fp 1 without inbuilt GPS. (No interest in getting bigger phone with inbuilt battery hungry GPS)
Looking for ideas about which Blutooth GPS to buy and the most eficient/smartest way to geotag these snaps with the intention of using them on some kind of Google map online mashup. Really like this one http://www.gpsvisualizer.com/examples/google_photo_map.html
Want to spend as little time as possbile editing/adjusting data to fit.
thanks

Well...I have my E51 for 3 years now indeed But it came out quite a tough toy, so I persistently refuse to upgrade. Looking for a major leap - can't wait for the N8 ))))
By that time - if you still need this - http://www.locr.com/ is the solution for symbian phones without geotagging possibilities. It works perfectly on the E51.

  • Can't get Opera mini to connect - symbian S60 3rd ...

I have installed Opera Mini v7.1.32448 on my Nokia 6700 slide which runs symbian S60 3rd edition. I keep getting the error that it can't connect. (The phone does not have WiFi and I connect using Vodafone). The phones built in web browser connects to the internet just fine, but I'd like to use 'opera' instead. On trying 'network test' in the advance Opera settings, it acknowledges that 'I have a working network connection'.  Any suggestions why it won't connect for me?
    Attached, 2 x screen grabs, 1) I have network -2) I can't connect!

Thanks for the suggestion, but unfortunately it was of no help at all. Using Nokia Suite, the version of Opera Mini, is the only one available for download to my phone. It's irritating that I can connect using the standard Nokia built in browser, but as I have a very low data contract on my SIM, would love to be able to use Opera Mini to compress web surfing.
I have tried the different 'connection' options offered by Opear Mini, which are (1) use system default, (2) internet (3) WAP services. None of which connect for me. I'm sure it's a simple 'setting' somewhere, but my limited knowledge is now more than exhausted!
Just can't understand why the standard browser connects straight away, yet Opera can't make that same leap!

  • Aperture 3: Geotagged Photos show up in wrong part of world

I imported a set of geotagged photos. When I look at places in Aperture 3 several of the photos are appearing in the wrong part of the world ( Kazakhstan instead of Nova Scotia). The photos were taken / geotagged by my Blackberry Storm. When I travel I'll take a picture with the Storm to get the geotag info and then later copy those coordinates into the photos I take with my camera. The photos with the copied coordinates ( I used PhotoMechanic to set the location info) are showing up in the correct location by the way.
The Storm photos show up in the right location when viewed in iPhoto, Flckr, Photo Mechanic, Google Earth.
Any ideas why this would be happening
    Gary

Just stepped in the same problem on my Mac Pro, Aperture 3.2.1, iTunes 10.5.1 and iPad updated to 5.0.1.
Once selected Aperture as reference library for photo syncing I selected specific projects and faces. As a photographer I have volumes of material I just can't copy completely on devices.
I noticed the number on the right side of projects in iTunes were way below the actual content. Syncing just let me verify on my iPad a lot of picture were missing.
Deselecting Aperture and photo sync, erasing pictures from the device and restarting from the top didn't help.
Also repairing photo database gave no effect.
I solved by updating ALL photos previews in Aperture. It took the whole day, 16 hours, but in the end, quitting both AP and iTunes then enabling photo sync showed the correct amount for each project, same on iPad.

  • Inconsistent results using the "places" view on the iPad with geotagged photos

I am getting inconsistent results with geotagged photos on the iPad (both 1 and 2) OS 5.01.  It seems that sometime photos will show up in the correct location on the places view others will not ( they will not show up at all).  In fact I can have a geotagged photo in one folder, synch with iTunes and it will not show up in the places view and then move that same picture to a different folder (which becomes an album on the iPad) re-synch and it will now show up at the correct location in the places view.  All photos show up in the album view.  Everything is the latest version iTunes, iPad etc.  I can also have many photos geotagged exactly to the same location (exact same coordinates) some will show up, others will not.
I have used different methods to geotag my photos.  At first I was using Photoshop Elements 8 until they stopped supporting geotagging photos.  Now I am using a third party application GeoSetter (excellent free application).  The GPS data is clearly in the Exif data but the results are not consistent.
    Any ideas?

I believe I have solved this problem myself and thought others might benefit from what I found.  It turns out to be what I believe as a glitch in iTunes.  iTunes creates a cache of all the photos that you synch with your iPad, iPhone etc.  Apparently it does not update that cache when you change the photo.  At least not the Geotagging data.  The file modify date was changing but that wasn't enough to cause iTunes to update the cache of the photos.  I deleted the cache of all the photos and re-synched and presto now all my photos where showing up at the correct location in the iPad "places" view.
I might add that I called Apple tech support and was routed to a higher tier support person and was very disappointed with his response.  He basically told me that the "place" view in the iPad and iPhone was designed to be only used with an Apple computer and Apple software and was surprised the places view was working at all with pictures synched with a Windows based machine.  He also said he was unable to help me since he couldn't provide support for non-Apple products.  Although I understand this to a point I think he was too quick to make this decision.  The solution after all was a simple one and one I think he should have known.  I would think this cache problem would happen whether I was using Apple products as well.  I view this as a bug in iTunes.  Apple needs to compare the modified date of the file and update the cache if it has changed.

  • Share Geotagged Photos: Flickr, Picasa or Panoramio?  Which do you use?

I've gotten started geotagging photos. I'm using HoudahGeo and pulling tracks from my Garmin etrex. Then importing into iPhoto. Really cool.
My photos are mostly from hiking. I'd like to start sharing some of these, but don't know which service is best. Flickr, Picasa, or Panoramio? I've started an account on all three to compare them, but I haven't installed any plug-ins yet.
I'm wondering which service makes it easiest for others to find my photos. Not just people I know, but someone who might want to hike the same trail, camp at the same site and check it out ahead of time. Picasa doesn't have a map, but I've noticed that photos show up in search almost right away. In Flickr, my photos haven't showed up after a day (it is a holiday weekend). I understand that with Panoramio, they are reviewed first, so that could take weeks.
So, which service do you use and why?

CHoice is up to you - I use Panoramio and google earth because I like the way they work and integrate and I use Google earth to plan trips and see where I went
You also might take a look at the ATP Photo FInder - http://photofinder.atpinc.com/ - it is a neat, small stand alone GPS receiver that will add the GeoCodeing to your photos without the computer - CostCo.com recently had them on sale for $80 with free shipping

  • Hostsfile (hosts file) on Symbian S60 5th edition ...

Does anyone know if a hostsfile (or similar function as a hosts file) can be installed and how it can be used on Symbian S60 5th edition (for the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic)?
I've found on Wikipedia: ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hosts_file ) that it should be possible, it specifies folders where the file should be:
    Symbian OS 6.1-9.0
    C:\system\data\hosts
    Symbian OS 9.1+
    C:\private\10000882\hosts (AllFiles capable only)
but there is no more details about the needed file format, and I couldn't find any application dealing with a hostsfile on Symbian. Apparently, there used to be the Appgate Mobile Client, but I can't find it anymore.
I would appreciate any help/clue about this. Thank you.

    Hi
Yah  INT/5.00.50 and TW/5.00.60 on the N5230 work just fine. 5.00.50 is the last International version but it has a bug when navagating in landscape view, (the map looks out of sync, streets don't line up on the left and right side of the screen). That happens on the N97, N97 mini, N5230, and the Samsung HD, others say it happens on other Nokia phones, but I can't say that because I only have the phones I listed. Anyhow in the Tawain version 5.00.60 this was fixed. As a sidenote it has been rumored that Garmin has discontiued develpoment of there mobile XT product for Symbian because Nokia is offering their own product for free. But map updates will always work no matter what and in my opinion Garmin even without any more updates is and always will be a better mapping program than they very buggy Nokia/OVI Maps 3*..Lastly I am using Garmin on all my phones because Nokia/OVI maps 3.* turn by turn doesn't work properly on any of the phones I have, it is off by 250yards, (in back of) the actually position, (it tells you turn 250 yards after you already turned, crazy!) Whereas Nokia.OVI Maps V2.* never had that problem. I really wish Nokia would fix there current bugs before adding more buggy features...

  • Geotagging photos in LR4

Is it really so that you only can load one gpx-file at a time and geotag photos that are on that track? This starts to feel very stupid after a 2 week trip with a GPS that splits the track into daily gpx-files (my device can create longer tracks too but not nearly long enough to cover a week or two). In the tool I used previously I could select multiple files and geotag the whole batch in one sweep. Hope that quite small addition will appear in some update verison. Or did I miss some feature that makes it possible in 4.0?

Yes, merging before importing to LR is of course an option. I have already tried GPX Editor, which however produce output that LR refuse to read. Babel next...
But then we can conclude that Adobe has missed this small but quite significant detail when planning the GPX import use cases. Letting the user select multiple files and merging them on the fly when importing should be trivial to implement.

  • Symbian s60 v5 T9 word suggesting

I have always had a nokia phone but have recently moved to a win mobile touchscreen phone I really want to move back to a Nokia touchscreen phone but the only & Massive problem I have with Symbian is there is no word suggesting when typing in T9, in win mobile you have the option to “Suggest words when entering text” which is a god send for writing long words or if you cannot spell the word, because it has all ready suggested the words.  Will Symbian s60 v5 have this option? If not WHY not.

It’s nice to see that nokia is ignoring users!, will some one from nokia please answer my question as this a fundamental problem with nokia’s, or should i spend my money on Win mobile (which a dont want to but the messaging is much better)  Nokia labs is releasing excellent programs lately will they add the word suggestion to at least s60 v5??  Please.

  • FlickIt: unable to access GeoTag photos to post on Flickr?

Please fix the iPhone SDK so that 3rd party apps like FlickIt can send the geotagged photos to Flickr. Why strip the GPS data off if it's already there? Sounds like a bug to me? Now I've just wasted my time with my vacation photos. I thought I had so carefully geotagged and uploaded from the road. See diagnosis of the bug & workaround below. I'm really impressed with the high quality of support and quick response I got from a free app on a Sunday!
I just want to see my photos on a map. Is a mashup that hard to do? Maybe iPhone Maps / Google Earth apps should learn this trick then I would only need Flickr maps website to share with others?
Unfortunately, missing GPS data is due to a limitation in the iPhone OS itself. By the time my app gets the photo, the OS has stripped off all EXIF metadata. This is a problem for all 3rd-party developers using the camera or library choosers from Apple.
If you transfer your images using iPhoto or sync them using iTunes, then they should retain their original GPS metadata.

  • Email geotagged photos with map link.

I use Nokia Location Tagger in my Nokia N95-1.
Nokia Location Tagger geotag my photos and I can se in Nokia Maps that the coordinates are right.
I want to email my geotagged photos from my phone to my friends and also a map link with the coordinates.
If my friends click on the coordinates (or on the photo) I want Google Maps (or similar) to open.
Is it possible to send a map link like this?

    Hi there,
Okay, I understand what you're trying to do a little better now. How about Share on Ovi in conjunction with the Share Online client for the mobile phone? It works very well, I just pushed a photo with a GeoTag this morning, which gives you a Google Map View tab when you visit the link. The application on the phone and online both let you send links to your friends. Check out my post:
    http://share.ovi.com/channel/travla.MyStuff
You just need to sign up at http://share.ovi.com.
I also noticed that if you don't want to download the Share Online client (or if you handset was not supported), each channel you create (think of channels like folders) has an e-mail address associated with it. All you need to do to post without the Share Online client (say from your desktop PC or Mobile E-mail client) is to mail your GeoTagged media to these customised channel e-mail addresses and you media is posted on the web with a Map View. Very cool.....

  • GeoTag photos already taken?

Is it possible to geotag photos taken while location services were disabled (or to photos added from the computer) and these to be incorporated to the "Places" map inside "Photos"?

I'll still be able to connect to wifi, right?
    Yes.
you can still receive/send SMS, does that sound right?
Ever hear the term "Sticker Shock"? To do that would require activating International Provisioning on your account with AT&T before you go. You would then pick a carrier/plan for every country you intend to visit. Did I mention this would be expensive, as in "Sticker Shock"?

  • Symbian S60: Make some applications memory residen...

Now I know this is a simple question but I figure most people are pretty switched on in this forum so should be able to help me quite easily.
I have a Nokia 5500 sport with symbian S60 I believe running on it. Now the OS is horribly slow at loading the alarm clock and contacts, takes 6 seconds for the alarm and maybe 2-3 for the contacts.
If I open the alarms, then the main menu and click alarms again, it loads instantly. I imagine this is because I never pressed exit and it was still resident in memory. Now I do not run many apps, basically just the essential stuff like SMS, contacts, alarms and contacts, I imagine all of these apps would fit in memory at once quite easily, is there an option to force apps to stay resident? Or perhaps instead of having 'exit' change the button to be 'home' so that they stay running in the background?
I'm sure what I want to do is possible, I am just not sure how to do.
    Thanks in advance.

    There is no red button?
Also RAM is there to be used, I don't really see how it would slow the phone down providing there is enough RAM available to load all future apps.
When I manually add up contacts, sms etc it is well under the total available ram.
What does the red button normally do? Perhaps I can do it manually another way?
